  • In the outer rim , you do what you must to keep your old technology working. If you are into retro computing, it's the same story.

PERFECT analogy, absolutely beautiful ♥ ~ and the end of retrocomputing is near, just like star wars ended...

They scare easily, but they will return, and in larger numbers.

Poo - yes yes yes. Nice video and I'm glad you are calling these people out. There are also the in betweeners who sell a retro computers but change out the chips with lower spec or previous generation chips

I have also heard stories of selling a "not working / untested" machine, but after some testing it turned out that ALL the chips in the machine were bad, so it was a machine assembled entirely out of dead parts (so was never going to be fixable by the purchaser).

Yup, next month, I'll get some power flex to make my ATX PSU into an Amiga 1200 PSU and then I can start looking at fixing it.

I'm a bit torn when it comes to people who're selling machines parted out. I recently had a C64C with both CIAs completely shorted. My options were to either buy a machine and perform the scavenging myself or to buy the CIAs for a little bit less. I opted for the latter.
(There's also the 3rd option - buy the CIA recreations but that would've been twice the sum to buying a working C64C)

Yeah, it's an odd one. I don't think there is anything wrong with selling spare parts, but when I see sellers who are selling enough spare parts to make an entire working machine, I can't help but think that they have pulled that machine apart as it is worth more as spares than as a whole unit.

Oh no, I've bought a few Amiga parts from your featured seller (raffle ticket guy). Red light sabre for me, I guess.

Perhaps, I'm not saying it's wrong to do that, it just makes me weep a little when I see ALL the parts to make a working machine being sold individually. It's a double edged sword, as you can either see it that they are making parts available to the people who need them, but if it comes at the cost of pulling apart a working (or nearly working machine), then one machine is dying to fix another.

Yeah, couldn't find an old Dixons picture in the UK, but they looked a lot like that here.

so why is the tech in star wars always having to be repurposed.. did the dixons branch shut there too?
