The Animorphs series might have looked like just another fun ‘90s sci-fi adventure, but beneath the surface, it was something far darker, weirder, and more intense than anyone expected. What started as a story about kids turning into animals to fight an alien invasion quickly became a brutal war epic, complete with body horror, PTSD, and impossible moral choices. From its terrifying alien villains to its shockingly graphic depictions of violence, Animorphs pulled no punches-and it left a generation permanently traumatized. Let’s dive into the wild, unhinged history of this unforgettable series.

I disliked the Arny version because it's proof that you need someone that does not just look like the character but can definitely portray the character. Momoa's version could have been good if only the writing and direction was done properly. I wish there's a remake and they cast him again.

Anybody else still lie awake at night, thinking about that one mission where the animorphs committed one of the most heinous war crimes ever put to paper? I almost stopped reading when the order was given... I felt like I couldn't bear the weight of it on my own soul, and I wasn't even there. Spec Ops: The Line has nothing on Animorphs.

  • @alitain8135

Always great when people talk about Animorphs. Also can't forget, I think it helped that in ways the series put the darker, heavier topics sometimes in weird or fun ways which probably helped kids kind of take them in without totally scarring them. Like the fact that the Animorphs tried, but also mentally battled, over the idea of driving massive numbers of Yeerks(AND their human hosts) insane as a chance to strike against the Yeerks. And how? With instant oatmeal. It's the right kind of amusingly weird idea that bellies the dark moral conundrum that the series loved to throw at the readers. Animorphs will always and forever be my fav book series. I loved it from the beginning, was always in the book store every month itching for the next volume. And I've reread it several times since and always enjoy it no matter how old I am. On the note of the TV show...while technically not great compared to the books I always maintain that they had just STELLAR casting. I mean you might argue that Brooke Nevin physically doesn't evoke Rachel's gymnast Amazon look. But really, all the actors I felt nailed the roles to the "T". Plus it introduced me to ones like Shawn Ashmore and Brooke Nevin so there's that. I agree though, I think an animated series would be the best way to allow the books to shine. I've thought plenty(like many fans no doubt), on how a movie adaptation could go. I don't think it's impossible to maybe do a trilogy of movies that cover the early plot points, but in the end it wouldn't be entirely satisfying cause they couldn't obviously do everything. You could feasible get one pretty great movie out of it by just sticking with the first book, but yeah an animated series would be able to have the morphing, battles, and crazy aliens that also are important to making Animorphs great.

I ran a pirate campaign set in a magical alternate universe where Christopher Columbus took a Spelljammer to the asteroid belt. Fast forward to the French Revolution, with the American Revolution (United American States of Saturn) having been won by Ben Franklin's Warforged army. Also Dracula was a mad scientist, the first human to discover a "practical" immortality, holed up on an ice moon (Encaeledus I think) to keep the Metroids in the basement frozen. Also also Venus was an superactive hellhole. Weeping willows would spear players, slurp out their organs, and convert them to plant zombie walking seed pods, like Flood carrier forms. Elves, firbolg, most "hybrid" races, and others races with a strong natural connection came from Venus. Sea based races came from Mercury and martial races came from, well, Mars. I kinda just threw everything I liked into a blender. I swear to God it made sense to my players, not just me.

Quick heads up about the warrior cats game!! A lot of avid and serious roleplayers tend to stay away from the public version of the game (like myself) and end up joining servers / roleplay groups which have a lot more stricter rules and guidelines for roleplay, like having their own custom clans, auditions for high ranks, needing to fill out a plot request for major plots for your character, etc. and take place on private servers so we can avoid a lot of the iffiness of the public version of the game, like with non-cats which are fairly commonplace now but used to be an entire issue when wcue was in development and sparked a LOT of debate in the games discord and even in the game itself.

I am always amused (the tamest word I can find) when someone reads fiction of a society different from that of the US and is offended by "problematic" situations and occurrences. It's fiction, but then fact can be stranger (and more problematic) than fiction. It's like "correcting" or banning writings that "offend" modern sensibilities. Orwell and Huxley would be proud (as would Goebbels and Smirnov).

Shattered Lands was one of the first d&d games I played and I’ve always loved the setting, especially with how they didn’t just copypasta Tolkien’s works. Was sad that psionics barely got a mention though, since they were so key to the setting that everyone had some power in The Way.

Great video, but you're behind on one aspect; the movie trilogy Memorial Edition added quite a bit, including importantly "Bonfire of Dreams", "Scars", and Guts and Judeau's conversation before Guts left the Hawks. The extensions, plus the scenes that were already there and missing from the 97 series (and the non-canon scenes that were added to the 97 series) honestly makes Memorial Edition the superior Golden Age adaptation 🤙

Yes they do. You have to read more of the series. No spoiler tag since these books are over 25 years old: Tobias is the product of Elfangor morphing to human and entering into a relationship with a human woman he had been on an adventure with. This is why Tobias felt an unexplainable connection with both Elfangor and Aximili. And also why Elfangor seemed so tender with him. His parents never looked for him because one was dead (Elfangor) and the other (Loren) was blinded and decided to give him up to her family because she thought it would be for the best. They are reunited towards the end of the series.

I started reading the series. And chronicles and Legends were the BEST. Summer Flame starts out well, but ends wrong...... Sort of.... I've read several of the Tales, and the Origins and the legends (Huma being a STAND OUT!),. I have the original art book, and the second art book and I've collected several prints from Larry Elmore and the others. I also was totally disappointed in the movie. What a bummer! The Mina series is good(dark disciple that is. (War of souls was meh),. And the last three were old and stale. (They need to let Tas rest in peace!),. My children are reading the series now, and I do love Krynn. I highly recommend the series to any and all.

Ah yes, 'Animorphs'... Tobias was always my guy (him and those MF'n "thermals", man 😊😅), and 'The Hork-Bajir Chronicles' was by far my favorite installment of the entire series. 'Animorphs' ruled my elementary school years in like second and third grade. I loved that sh*t so much. I was so super-amped when the live-action TV series was released. My mom took me to Blockbuster right as they opened on the day that first 'Animorphs' movie came out to rent it (it was just a release of the first few episodes of the series in more of a feature-length format with some special features like "behind-the-scenes" stuff and interviews with the cast and Applegate and such). I even had a bunch of the toys and everything, like those weird transforming figures. Good memories for sure...
