    I agree that it probably was the Toonami slot that got Outlaw Star out of obscurity, even if it wasn't able to avoid falling back in. Despite Cartoon Network airing Cowboy Bebop late at night, and despite airing Trigun years after the other two had finished (I had to watch that one on bootlegged subbed VHS)... it's Cowboy Bebop that's near-universally beloved (for good reasons) and Trigun that got a reboot anime (somehow?? hot damn). And I think I might have seen the finale episode to Outlaw Star, like, maybe once on American TV. It was that show I always wanted to go back and figure out. Maybe now that I'm out of high school they'll even let me watch the uncensored version. You think if they'd aimed the show at adults rather than censoring it for kids, it would've taken off more?

    This video was going along fine for the first 8 minutes or so until the host engaged the woke thrusters and rocketed off down the politically correct spiral. The fact that expressing his indignity was more important than getting basic pronunciation correct was quite telling.

    I checked these books out so often from my school's library that they tried to make me read other stuff like Deltora Quest, Harry Potter and this one book series I can't remember the name of but remember that the main gist was that the villains were named after days of the week and had 3 subordinates named after the dawn, noon and dusk of said weekday. The books were titled things like Mister Monday and Grim Tuesday.

    Ageless fantasy. The books are perhaps a bit juvenile/teen fantasy...but loved the books as a child...still do. Not sure why the legal woes and problems are an issue for the story. Today, i have no shock if any popular author, actor, musician are crappy people. In fact, it's expected. I never saw.the divisions of "race" as an issue. It kept groups easy to understand...and when a character breaks "norms" of their culture, it's much more interesting and creates an arc that we want to follow. Notice, i see this as CULTURAL divides..not racial ones. In fact, most people are tired of the UNENDING need to see everything in a race lens. As far as the women, they are diverse, written well, and significant to the story. Not sure what is wrong with that. 😊

    The "race/gender" criticism falls flat for me. The most important character start to finish is a woman (Pol) and some of the other female characters are thin because they're simply minor characters. The author specifically elevates female characters at a time when that was not at all the standard. And you have to lean way too hard into modern obsession with race to have an issue with these books - it's not earth, these aren't "races", these are groups of people specifically created by different gods to be different from each other. They aren't sterotypes, they're actually types, and intended to be that way.

  • @ChumblesMumbles
    @ChumblesMumbles 15 годин тому

    It was somewhat formulaic but much less an obvious copy-paste of LOTR as Terry Brooks' Shannara books. So it stands on its own pretty well. Pol is the center piece that holds it together.

    Garion didn't win by stabbing Torak, he won by refusing to submit to Torak's attempt to dominate and enslave him, as the dark god had dominated and enslaved his people: "Hear me, maimed and despised God," he grated from between clenched teeth. "You are nothing. Your people fear you, but they do not love you. You tried to deceive me into loving you; you tried to force Aunt Pol to love you; but I refuse you-even as she did. You're a God, but you are nothing. In all the universe there is not one person-not one thing-that loves you. You are alone and empty, and even if you kill me, I'll still win. Unloved and despised, you'll howl out your miserable life to the end of days." Garion's words struck the God like blows... ...This was why Garion had come to this decaying ruin-not to fight Torak, but to reject him."

  • @Hrafnskald
    @Hrafnskald 15 годин тому

    Expecting a book written in 1982 to have the same values as people 42 years later is absurd. As far as race = good/evil, this was directly addressed and disproven in the sequel, the Mallorean, which is all about our original heroes and heroines discovering the Angaraks are actually decent people. Urgit, Vella, Yarblek, Cyradis, Toth, Senji: all good people. Even in the Belgariad, Belgarath makes this clear when he says there are good people in Cthol Murgos, but that Garion should be careful around any Murgos he sees in Sendaria, as those ones were sent by their government as spies.

    5Easy is kiddy funland. I prefer my original box sets where Strahd is an eternal prisoner in his own hell and can never really be defeated. Where the land itself is the true evil. Instead of a theme park with fun jump scares this should feel more like an old school horror film. Madness and death I should definitely be on the table. To a much higher degree than any other lands you may play in. With the possible exception of the Dark Sun setting. I watch a lot of dungeons and dragons I always see the dark Powers playlist some fun little addition to your character to play around in enhance yourself with. But I think the truth fun is when those powers are played as an evil that will eventually consume you.

    Meh, keep your woke snowflake sensibilities out of our classics ( I mean this in the general sense, not personal). Was and still is one of my favourites and I have all the books on my bookshelf. Yes the authors might be horrible people but what does that have to do with their work? Cancel culture at its worst here. And the racial differences does make sense in that world. Having all the races made by different gods mean that they are each made in the image of THEIR particular god. The sensibilities of that world are therefore different from our world, and having that gender difference amplified absolutely makes it more relatable. So what if the women are focused on getting married and having children? It is entirely in keeping with the time period - women were not as educated in that world, and therefore the traditional gender roles are more ingrained. It is only in the modern world with more educated women that they are able to break out of the gender roles and make their own way. But for most of history, women’s main goal in life WAS to get married well and have children.

    IIRC there is one way out of Athas. You’d have to find the ruins of Kalidnay, which was taken to Ravenloft when the sorcerer king murdered half the people in his city. This implies that the ruins are connected to the other plane where the city still exists. In theory, you could use the mist to reach the Kalidnay in Ravenloft, then escape the city and travel to a different land, defeat the big bad there, and then return to that land’s original plane.

    It's a shame that we are in a culture that views 'once guilty, always guilty' and it does not matter how they may have changed after certain events occurred. Say the N word in 1970's and you get cancelled regardless of the fact that the word was just common use then, and that the person does not use that word today. I met the Eddings back in the mid-80's at a book signing in Renton, Washington, I was in my early-mid 20's. Maybe part of the attraction of the books was that it was a simplistic fantasy series, and one could understand how isolated people ruled by their god would have been raised with those traits. And any child that displayed traits otherwise maybe were punished or eliminated so that there was a certain cultural purity.

    Damn this is crazy. Ive been cooking up a fantasy world in a head for years, and here it is already made. City states ruled by Sorceror Kings dotted across a large wasteland, terrible conditions, no gods. I even thought of the idea of a sea of shifting sands in the middle of the map with a hidden glorious city in the middle. This is a brief comparison, the similarities go deeper, but man there is nothing new under the sun lol
