This series consumed me as a kid lmao. I really loved being a part of the fandom, even though some people were really weird about gatekeeping their fan tribes :')
@exitsexamined i was never involved in the role playing side of things, but I was deep in the fanart side. A lot of people like me were really into creating tribes and original characters, but it was pretty much just so we could draw them. Making 'adoptable' designs of your tribe was really common and some people did NOT like people making their own members of their tribe without explicit permission.
Fantribes were/are smthn, they used to be pretty fun back in the beginning of the fandom, but became a big drama pit (ifykyk)... I don't really involve myself with CS communities anymore bc of them
@PythonTheOrbWing the problem wasn't copying the tribes, it was requiring permission from the tribe creator to even make an original character from that fantribe, regardless of credit. Kinda silly in my opinion
Oh man as a warriors kid who loved dragons I ate these books up. Only for a few years though, I pretty much grew out of them before the first series was through with. But as an artist I still adore the cover art. Glad to see you cover this series
Haha I think there were a ton of kids exactly like you - who loved dragons and this series was perfect for them. I can get growing out of the series, it didn't mature in the same way as other YA books but it knows what it is and does it well, thanks for watching!
@@exitsexamined The heck you mean you didn’t mature the first book had I believe 12 confirmed deaths a few of them very violent as in a humans head getting bit off a neck snapped and burned alive
For those of you interested in non-human dragon-centric perspective works, another series named Age of Fire by E.E Knight might interest you. It has more humans in it than WoF, but it's all about dragons forging their own empire and trying to legitimize themselves as to the other nations. It also has a perspective shift between the siblings that are at the center of everything between each of the first 3 books.
@@exitsexaminedAge of Fire is advertised as 13+, but I'd say they'd have to be a pretty mature 13. There's a lot of gore, and even more politics to keep track of. The same author also has another 2 books set in the same universe, but about 800 years in the future, and from the perspective of a human
AHHH I LOVED THESE BOOKS SO MUCH AS A KID I CANT BELIEVE I ALMOST FORGOT ABOUT THEM!! i memorized the second book basically cover to cover and adored Tsunami and the seawings design. i also think these books definitely were the gateway that caused teenage me to become obsessed with ASOIAF years later. super excited for this! i love seeing your videos pop up
Honestly as a huge Tsunami simp I'm glad to find other seawing fans haha. Wish we were friends as teenagers so I would finally have someone who what in the world I was talking about with this series haha Thanks so much for watching the video and checking out the channel!
17:40 I was already a dragon lover before discovering wof, fan art is actually how I discovered the series, while just browsing dragon art in general. I noticed there was a lot of similar styles and similar dergs together, so I went looking for the source and found wof.
Im so happy wings of fire is getting more attention because that means more people will get to see how amazing dragons can be if they aren't just tools for humans to use or slay!
hey! Wow I was using your videos as reference and research for my videos! I think I credited you in sources, if not I'll do it now! Love your videos and channel!
@@exitsexamined Hahaha, happy they were of some use! I've also been watching your stuff - picked it up with the History of Warriors video (those are like my favorite books of all time). I'd love to have a conversation about youtube and how you think about the creative process sometime if you're up for it!
As a WoFtuber, describing the fandom as "mildly insane" and "endearingly unhinged" is an understatement lol. I'm glad you enjoy the series as much as we do, great video btw! :] 29:00 Actually, Tui recently gave us some updates on the TV show on an interview livestream. I don't remember the exact dates and details that she mentioned, but the show is still in progress and should be releasing in a few years time! Also Darkstalker greatest WoF book of all time 🔥
I'm a huge WoF fan. At the age of 56, I'm way older than a lot of other fans, but good writing is good writing. Darkstalker is my favorite all-time villain for he is so painfully relatable. (He reminds me of my ex, citing just one example.) Next year, the graphic novel adaptation of his origin story is coming and I can't wait.
Veteran Wof fan here! I think I remember a long time ago hearing Tui wanted the fourth arc to include one new tribe themed around spiders. In the third arc a lot of the dragons have insect-themed names but Tui specifically left out Spider themed names like Widow or Tarantula because she wanted to use them for the new tribe. This was a few years ago and Tui could have changed things around since then so we might not be getting that, but it’s a good starting point.
I looked it up a bit rn but can’t find anything, except for plenty of people saying “I remember hearing about it somewhere” like me. I don’t know the original source where she said it. Everyone just accepts that she said it at some point, which is a bit frustrating. Sorry, haha, wish I could help out more. Great video btw!
@@TheEsutanthis isn’t very helpful, but I also remember that, except I’m pretty sure it was more of a “just in case” type deal than her actually wanting another tribe. But of course no one can find a source so I could definitely be wrong
The one thing i wanted as a kid was a book Just about Dragons, I was beyond estatic to see the first published book of Wings of Fire. Have kept up with the series as it's been published, as I still love dragons very very much
@@exitsexamined I really liked how much it expanded the world, and how dark the society of Pantala got. I think it needed an extra book or two to really flesh out what was there, especially since it was sharing prologues, epilogues and even whole books with the Pytheria dragons. I hope the next arc (Tui is brainstorming it atm) expands on how the Pantala dragons rebuild their society, and give a Mudwing a book! That tribe has been figuratively and literally left in the mud lol
Wings of Fire is one of my favourite series overall, with not too many books that you get bored by it, and not not enough books that you wish there were more, but just the right amount. I think the books are interesting and engaging and funny and tui should definitely make more!
@@exitsexamined Okay I will! To give you an insist on it, I had thought, "What are two things that aren't normally in the same book? Or the main focus? Dinosaurs and Dragons, that is what I thought of.
I'm surprised nobody has talked about the Ultimate Dragon Saga trilogy by Graham Edwards. It preceded WoF decades before (Kinda bothers me that most people assume that WoF started it), and was very unique with its concepts. I wish it was more well known. Same with the Duncton Wood books.
Woof! Sorry if I missed that! Looks like three books in the mid 90's? Not seeing so much online about this, doesn't seem super well known. Was it told from Dragons perspective?
OMG ty for naming the other dragon xenofiction books, i have been trying to fine the titles of other dragon books (where the dragons are the MCs) but was having no luck since all me search results are sued towards WOF, if you have the names of any other dragon books i would love to know
@@exitsexamined Yes it was :) They are pretty obscure sadly, having been out of print for decades (the fate of many obscure underrated XF from the '80s and '90s). I'd love to see you cover the Duncton Chronicles someday. It's an absolute gem and I wish it had more love. The worldbuilding is incredible in those books. Same with the characters and it is extremely emotional. Sadly they don't have much of a fanbase (We are a tiny tiny corner of the world lol), so fanart and any cultural significance is nonexistent, so I'm not sure how it would work with the format you use for these videos.
@@chaoticreyrey1779 There is the "Age of Fire" series. It has humans in it but it seems mostly told from a dragon's POV (I never finished it but I need to). There is also Dragon in Chains, which is part of a series called "The Remembered War". I was also reading "Dragonkin", which is about dragons struggling to find a new home upon the rise of Man, though never finished it (need to). Those are the only ones I can think of at the moment. I'm sure Amazon has more books like these that I just need to look through carefully :)
I'm 22 and I only just recently got around to reading these books. They are really enjoyable, even for older people. I was concerned that they would be a bit too childish, but they actually handle some some pretty mature, complex and surprisingly gorey themes.
I was like 15 when the first book came out and as a lover of all things dragon I fell hard for it. I'm 27 now and even though I kinda fell off after the second arc I still dip my toes back in every now and then. As an adult I really appreciate how well Tui does immersive dialogue and nuanced characters, though I have also noticed she has a tendency to get distracted by shinyes and start new plot threads before she's fully fleshed out the last one and leaves it dangling. If she can overcome that urge then I seriously believe she has a shot at being one of the best childen/young adult authors of the modern day.
For anyone looking for other books from the Dragon's Perspective. The Age of Fire series by E. E. Knight follows the life stories of three sibling Dragons, how their various travels effect each other as they navigate a world where Dragons are slowly dying off. . .whether because the other races are hunting them down, or the fact that Dragon's own deep rooted traditions and downfalls are slowly killing them. Note this is NOT YA, and while they are fairly straightforward reads. . these are not shallow characters. They each have their own struggles and inner demons to overcome. They each make their own mistakes and you may start off loving one and hating another, only to get a book on THAT dragon's perspective and realizing that your mindset was skewed because of the perspective you were shown first. Its very cleverly done.
@@exitsexamined I actually haven't gotten around to picking up the entire series. I found them a while ago. . .but haven't had the hobby money to finish getting the whole series.
I’m so glad I found this series in 4th grade, it sparked my love for reading along with Harry Potter, and I am still so obsessed with it. My profile picture is literally moon and darkstalker lore and I love making oc s and au
7:28 I really do love these books, but there is one thing that irked me when I read it. The fact that the tribes didn’t exist before the Scorching. The dragons were a whole mishmash of what they are presently. It was kinda annoying for me to read that. And that the Sun Silk literally did nothing after it was hyped up so much. I liked the Animus magic, and was sad that it was taken away after the second arc. I do know that enchanted items still work, but I’m still sad that there can’t be more. Yes, I know that by how it was written that Animus magic was OP as hell, and didn’t have clear boundaries for how it even worked, but come on man, cool dragon magic!
You know you made a great point, dragon magic is pretty sweet haha. No interesting point about the tribes before scorching, I didn't even think about it but that doesn't make sense now you point it out. Just wondering what was your favorite arc?
@@exitsexamined I’d say the Jade Mountain arc. It was the first true prophecy that the series ever had, and the first in a long long time canonically. Also, the description of how Moon gave the prophecy, when told from Winter’s perspective, was really really cool and well written. Darkstalker was also pretty cool, but a little 2D. Especially since he was apparently just going to be evil no matter what? Seems a bit strange, but fine. Sorry I didn’t respond sooner, I didn’t see that you had replied until now.
Bro I completely forgot about this series remember reading the first two books but could never found the third one and completely forgot it existed thank you so much
Dragoriders of Pern namedrop! This series sounds so fun and unique, I can think of like one other series other than Eragon where the dragon is a POV character. It should be a bigger thing, dragons are fascinating! I'll check this series out, I might start getting it for my godchild
I will 100% do Dragonriders of Pern on this channel! Hopefully sometime in Winter, thanks for keeping up with the channel and let me know if your godchild likes these!
I loved this series growing up!! My friends and I would pretend to be dragons on the playground from our favorite tribes and really weirded out some of our peers 😂
Hey, someone's gotta pay for my electricity so I can continue to spend my days reading YA novels haha. But seriously, thanks for keeping up with the channel and checking out the vid!
I am 20 years old but I still have all 15 of the novels on my shelves, I loved them growing up and still occasionally pick up my favourites for a quick read since I can crunch through them in about an hour. The cover art is stunning and I’m much too attached to them to get rid of them. One of my biggest regrets is donating ALL of my Warriors books; majority of the main novels, Tales of the Clans, and even some of the graphic novels, so I am holding onto these as long as I can.
@@Someperson12532 I had a sheltered childhood with no internet access and not very many friends so books became my escape from a very young age. Wings of Fire is also a series for a younger audience so they aren’t difficult to read at all and super easy to move through. It also helps if you’ve read it before.
Wings of Fire got plenty of dark stuff that people like to overlook, but can we accept that the way Darkstalker used his power on his father was REALLY fricking dark? We were lucky that the scene lasted so short. This series actually got me to finally enjoy reading (after cheating on a final assignment on a different book in freshman year when it comes to summarizing, but I read the book still). How much did it consume me? It took me weeks or months to finish Moonwalk by Michael Jackson, which was a book I wanted to read since middle school, but I managed to read Dragonslayer less than 24 hours (which was rare for me) It would be nice to see platonic ships normalized and see that not all ships are healthy and liking the ship doesn’t mean that you support it or see it as a “one-all-be all.”
I remember a few years ago, I was beyond obsessed with this series. I would spend over an hour a day on the fandom, both reading and creating fan fictions. I will also say that if you join an of the countless roleplaying threads on the fandom, its an experience. I can't really describe it, its just something that you have to experience for yourself.
@@exitsexamined not a lot maybe when talking about the racism in wof mentioning ice wings as a entirety there’s a poem in the guide from ice wings that says don’t trust anyone who looks different from you other then that maybe touching on the legends books and some of the wof UA-camrs but all in all it was fantastic and way better then I was expecting going into the video because most people touch on the series but don’t really showcase its strengths and it’s flaws. also you got yourself my sub (sorry for not having punctuation lol I’m typing this in a rush)
My daughter is a HUGE Wings of Fire fan, it has become one of her obsessions and has caused her to fall in love with dragons. With that being said I myself have loved dragons with the Age Of Fire books, Inheritance Cycle, Dragonriders of Pern and Dragonlance. Because of my daughter Ive somewhat become interlaced into the community and as a result Ive been kind of deemed as the 'Big Wings' by some (a Mudwing Reference). It brings me so much joy to see young people being brought into dragon fantasy. During I guess you could say my youth The Legend Of Spyro series with Cynder, Malefor etc. was sort of my experience with dragons to the level of Wings Of Fire.
Wings of fire is definitely one of the most oc driven fandoms I’ve ever been in, you aren’t a wings of fire fan without one! Most of the fandom at this point doesn’t even focus that much on the canon characters as much as they do on oc’s!
Ah, Wings of Fire! The only 'fandom' I'm even remotely involved in these days. I'm just gonna infodump/share real quick, lol! The Good: -ADORE a series from the perspective of dragons (as someone with a special interest in anything dragon related). The lore, dragon abilities/tribes, and worldbuilding are just enough to really snag your attention, but loose enough for you to easily add and modify as much as you'd like. -The books are very easy and simple to read, while still touching upon some darker topics -The fans get so creative with fantribes, AUs, OCs, and so much more, it's so cool to see! i regularly browse UA-cam for any cool new AMVs and whatnot -There's a TV series in the works that I'm SO EXCITED FOR!! -Not only that, there's going to be a convention called the FanWing Fest coming soon! -Personally, I have my own fantribe called ForgeWings (A split off of MudWings, they're heavily armored metallic dragons that live on a tropical island chain called Patinah and have a steampunk based society), I've reworked Animus magic (lets be real, its way too OP) and completely rewrote arc 3 (it's the worst arc imo), and have dozens of OCs. ForgeWings naming conventions are after any kind of metal/mineral and sometimes even gemstones, they vote in their queens, and have a great societal respect for innovation and creativity. They use a dormant volcano for their main Forge, where they smith metals for anything from housing constriction, tools, armor, stuff for inventions, artwork, ect. Being as heavy set and naturally armored as they are, ForgeWings cannot swim well (they have an instinctual fear of deep water) and cannot fly long distances. Their cities are built for non flight travel, as many recent generations are born with vestigial wings, or none at all. In the far future, the ForgeWings will be drakes, not dragons, as they will lose the need for their wings entirely. Current day, ForgeWings are already on their way to developing large ships and air balloons for their travel instead. They have a trade route with the SeaWings, and will very rarely get any visitors from other tribes (I have a Sky/Forge hybrid OC named Vulcana who's also a Firescales and lives in the Forge, and a Sea/Forge OC named Malachite, who established the SeaWing trade route when she was a young adult) The Bad: -Humans becoming a main thing out of nowhere really peeved me off. It would be like if Warriors suddenly had the Two-Legs start speaking Cat and participating in clan wars. The humans in WoF should've stayed as they were portrayed in arc 1. I did not start reading WoF for the humans POV, if I wanted that nonsense I'd go read literally any other dragon/dragonrider book. -Arc 3 SUCKED. Plot points felt very rushed, Wasp would've been a great villain, but they just had to try and one up the previous arc by making mind controlling hive mind ghost controlled parasitic plants to try and take over the world. Not as interesting as it sounds, and the ending was a confusing mess. Hoping arc 4 is better and leaves the humans behind. -The fandom has a MAJOR issue with zoophilia. You will find works of FERAL dragons with animal based g3nitals (like dog ones) going at it, and it's usually the characters that are canonically MINORS that are drawn in such a way. Absolutely rancid. Yes, it counts as zoophilia, as per definition, ANYTHING f3tishizing the body form (feral, on 4 legs) of an animal and/or irl animal based g3nitals is zoophilic. Regardless of the feral characters sapience. Yes, furries, an anthro with a dog thingy (based on irl dogs) is f3tishizing animals junk, and is zoophilic. -Being a fandom of mostly children in this day and age, it makes the fandom... really unpleasant at times. I've personally been in a Minecraft/Discord RP server (Wings of Fire: The New World) where people where grooming children into believing they have DID (dissociative identity disorder). I no joke, have screenshots of random discord users convincing minors that 'not feeling yourself at all times' and 'having a spotty memory' means you HAVE to have DID, and nobody else, not even a LISCENED MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL can tell you otherwise. These kids then pretend that Glory is their mother, their OCs are entire identities, that they're actually Princess Auklet, magically 'develop DID' in a week after hearing some random discord user talk about rping Loona from Helluva Boss in the general chat, HAVE to use a bot to prove you have the disorder, ect. And the mods won't do anything cuz 'there's no way to prove they actually don't have DID'. Absolutely abhorrent. Don't join that server.
Man, I love this series so much, and I really love how tui prioritizes strong world building and fan creativity, because the fan made stuff can be really good sometimes. Also, I highly doubt this would ever happen ever, but wouldn’t it be cool if Patrick page voiced darkstalker in the show (if the show even includes arc 2 idk if it does) idk I just thought that would be an awesome choice if it would be possible (also this video introduced me to ur channel and I am now subbing :)
I started reading Redwall because of your previous video and enjoy it. I'm glad you're going over a series I read in High School, after reading Warrior Cats in middle school. Edit: If anyone who hasn't read the series sees this comment, read Darkstalker if you’re interested. It's the best book in the entire series, and you don't need context for the story because it's a singular book set in a completely different time period.
Isn't Animorphs a super long series though? Is it the same type of like one friend group? I will cover it on the channel soon after I reread them but I can't for the life of me remember anything about the series haha
@@exitsexamined it's fairly long with 54 books in the main series and 10 companion books and yes, involves a single friend group throughout the entirety of the series outside of the odd book from a villain's or other character's perspective just to keep things fresh. It is also surprisingly adult with the characters regularly being disemboweled and losing limbs in fights and then dealing with the effects of PTSD...Well, war is hell as they say.
Didn't realize the similarities until you mentioned it but Age of Fire (if Wings of Fire had an older sibling) also had books dedicated to single perspectives. They were about three dragon siblings who are separated after their parents are killed by dragon slayers. Each sibling gets a book to tell their origin story and then they share the last three.
It's so rare to hear discussion of Age of Fire! Definitely a gem of a series with an unfortunately similar name to Wings of Fire that it flies under the radar for many.
I have loved this book series since i was 8 (im now 14) and still an active part of the fandom. It actually makes me mad when people say its just a kids series.😭
i adore wings of fire, and ive been reading it for several years now, it was honestly the only book series ive managed to read all the way through. I've now started reading warrior cats because of the fact tui helped to wright a few of the books and i wanted to check the series out.
I think the closest we got to a videogame or animation of WOF was Day Of Dragons, which was a kickstarter around the second series being realeased, though it was and is completely unrelated as far as i know. Spectacular game from a dragons perspective
I hate Animus magic so much. It has no rules to it, thus it can do anything and everything, and even its one downside of "going insane" is not true at all. Several books, including Darkstalker and Turtle's POV, establish that it's not using Animus magic that makes the dragon insane, it's how they're treated by society. So cool, the one weakness it is supposed to have is moot. I just can't get behind a magic system that is literally anything you imagine can be wished into reality.
The animus magic system allowed for some cool themes to be explored (the corruption of absolute power, devil's deals, etc.) But yeah I'm glad it stopped being a thing. A more specific magic system like the plant speak one with leafwings is more fun to me
Yeah, it wasn't handled the best. Darkstalker is so OP Tui wrote herself into a corner and had to pull a deus ex machina out of her pants. I'm also convinced it's the reason Turtle is such an underdeveloped protagonist, because if Tui actually let him do stuff he'd straight up break the story (just look at how quickly he solves major problems; Winter is dying -- not anymore; Chameleon escaped -- nope we found him; Darkstalker's a menace -- actually I have this stick that removes any tension of him dealing with me).
At 12:55 you say that Eragon is told from the dragon's perspective, although Saphira does get a single chapter out of the 4-book series, Eragon and Roran are the predominant POV's throughout these books.
I was just starting high school when the first book came out and I fell in love instantly. Tui does such a good job with immersive dialouge and nuanced characters! I kinda fell off after Book 10, though I still dip my toes back into the fandom every now and then. (The fans being chaotic and insane is pretty accurate lol. I still have flashbacks from the shipping wars.) The first Arc I would definitely recommend people read, as it is just hands down a good story. I do enjoy the second and third Arcs but I will warn that they get kinda convoluted at times. For all her good qualities as a writer Tui does have a habit where she'll start a new plot thread before she's fleshed out the last one and leaves it dangling till the last minute; that's really the only major gripe I have about the series. Other than that its fantastic. Oh, and Legends: Darkstalker is still one of the best books I have read in years, and coming from me that's really saying something.
Just a heads up: when you talked about the Mudwings, you showed images of Burn. She is a Sandwing. Also my favourite character is Fatespeaker. Also the music you're using at the beginning is from the Skyrim mod Legacy of the Dragonborn isn't it. And I can't wait for the show.
Thanks for mentioning the Mudwings thing, other people mentioned this TERRIBLE error I made haha. Music is from incompetech, it's copyright free music so you'll see alot of mods use it, I credited the music in my description: incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/music.html
Got to grow up with these books and got me interested in larger fantasy series (calling it game of thrones but with dragons was perfect lol). Still remember seeing Clay roaring on that book fair shelf... I hope the series gets the adaptation it deserves. In a better artstyle than the comics at least...
Tamora Pierce's Circle of Magic quartets also switch perspectives between each book of the main group of youngsters. Highly recommend, one of my favorite series I reread often.
Sounds like you really should read the "Age of Fire" series by E. E. Knight. Not only is the entire series told entirely from the view points of dragons ( the same 3 siblings across all 6 books), _its even darker_ then this series. MUCH more Game of Thrones-y.
If you were to make a vien diagram of the wof fandom, warrior cats fandom, and furries it would be a circle. I grew up on warrior cats myself and I never participated in the fandom, but wof on the other hand... I dived headfirst into the fandom and havent left. The roleplay community is BOOMING and the wof discord server's (ran by fans) promotions channel and the roblox games are a great way to find those niche roleplays. The wof fandom of course has its bad apples and moments but they are one of the most welcoming and open minded online communities Ive seen. And Ill never get tired of seeing peoples basefills and ocs! My personal favorite of dragonfox's animations is the Auklet knife one, absolute peak.
Great video! I haven't heard of Wings of Fire before but after this video I think I'll give reading the books a shot, they seem pretty interesting. So thanks to you I now have a new book series to read! Also, since you already coveres both Eragon and now Wings of Fire what chances are there that you'll also make a video on the other big dragon book series I know of, Cressida Cowell's How To Train Your Dragon? I really love that series and I think it would make a great video, especially considering all the adaptations, games and sequels the series got over the years and the relatively divisive fandom surrounding the franchise.
Hey thanks for checking out the video and the kind words! I'd say check out WoF if you're ok with not super serious writing! How is How To Train Your Dragon? Is it more YA or more geared toward older readers? I put it on the list!
@@exitsexamined How To Train Your Dragon is for general readers, so not really YA. From what I remember they are books with relatively light and easy to understand prose accompanied by various humorous illustrations. The movies and shows on the other hand I'd say they are slightly darker and kinda more mature than the books, so I think those are considered as being targeted at thw YA audience. I'm glad to hear you put it on the list for future book series to cover in videos. If you want a bit more information on the books and the series I'd be glad to give it to you because I do know quite a bit about the series.
Weirdly for how much I love dragons, I never read this series, probably because the first book came out when I was a junior in high school. I might have to check it out, although I'm currently in the grips of a case of Pokémadness for the first time in nearly 20 years. (Totally unrelated to the leaks but it is incredibly weird that the biggest leak in Pokémon history happened just a couple months after I started getting back into the series for the first time since the early 2000s. I think I might be cursed.)
Isn't Animorphs a super long series though? Is it the same type of like one friend group? I will cover it on the channel soon after I reread them but I can't for the life of me remember anything about the series haha
@@exitsexamined Yes on both counts. 54 books plus 8 companion books (4 Megamorphs, 4 Chronicles [Including Visser]) for what I'd consider the main series. It cycles through the six main characters. Come for the weird animal covers, stay for the child soldiers coming to a grips with the realities of war.
I KNOW THAT COVER I OWN THAT ONE Darkstalkers story is good oml, I’ve reread so many times I only got to see the first series w those first five + later owning Darkstalker,, I kinda moved on from it and it’s not like I had the chance for the paperback of the others, but still, it has a very special place in my heart.
I’m an older WOF fan (turning 20 this weekend) and my sona for wings of fire is a tribrid! Rather than making him op though, due to being mixed he lacks most abilities
As I kid I once wished for animus power cause that would mean that I could enchant myself to be immune to my own powers and then do anything I wanted. But then I grew older, read more fiction, and realized that for that reason, it was a shinning example of how not to create a power system for your story. What power system would you suggest to replace animus power? I would probably have used magical skyfire crystals or something that could turn ordinary items to turn them into enchanted objects. Can sometimes produce the same effect as Animus power (things like the dreamvisitor, the Eye of Onyx, and the Obsidian Mirror could still exist with this new power system), except, skyfire is a very limited resource (explains why magic is so rare in the setting), and now one can't control how the crystal's magic would affect the object in question. Also instead of Darkstalker being an animus, he would have just been a dragon who was granted super strength and near invulnerability (think toned down version of superman) by a powerful crystal he found as a dragonet.
You mention not knowing other series where the books alternate perspectives, I'd like to hold up Animorphs as an example. Also! I'd love to see a vid about them.
I have to say that changing the POV in every book is also done in "spirit animals," which is, just like warrior cats, a multi writer series. It has only 7 books tho, as far as I know. Or maybe I just dropped out the series but they kept writing (I don't think so). The second book is written by Maggie Stiefvater, who is the author9f series like Raven Boys, and my personal fav of the 7. I think this is a series people don't talk enough about and would be interesting.
Isn't Animorphs a super long series though? Is it the same type of like one friend group? I will cover it on the channel soon after I reread them but I can't for the life of me remember anything about the series haha

@PythonTheOrbWing the problem wasn't copying the tribes, it was requiring permission from the tribe creator to even make an original character from that fantribe, regardless of credit. Kinda silly in my opinion

Wings of fires fandom didn’t really die. Tui t Sutherland is still making more books a tv show and more. There’s still many things coming out
Ya
Shes still making more books?
@ yea an ark 4 I think is coming out and there’s more graphic novels. Also the possible tv show
@LilyUnknown- I am so excited for the tv show and arc 4
I thought Netflix canceled the show? Did someone else pick up the idea?
The funny thing is, Tui T. Sutherland actually wrote both series. She was one of the people who wrote under the pseudonym "Erin Hunter."
Hi im a representative of the wof fandom we will be colonizing this comment section shortly
We have arrived
now let’s begin

For those of you interested in non-human dragon-centric perspective works, another series named Age of Fire by E.E Knight might interest you. It has more humans in it than WoF, but it's all about dragons forging their own empire and trying to legitimize themselves as to the other nations.
It also has a perspective shift between the siblings that are at the center of everything between each of the first 3 books.
Oh nice sounds very similar! Is it still YA or more adult themed?
@@exitsexaminedAge of Fire is advertised as 13+, but I'd say they'd have to be a pretty mature 13. There's a lot of gore, and even more politics to keep track of. The same author also has another 2 books set in the same universe, but about 800 years in the future, and from the perspective of a human
Tried to read those once. Was pretty awful. Noted out and returned the books after a couple painful, cringe-tastic chapters.
Wish we were friends as teenagers so I would finally have someone who what in the world I was talking about with this series haha
Thanks so much for watching the video and checking out the channel!
17:40 I was already a dragon lover before discovering wof, fan art is actually how I discovered the series, while just browsing dragon art in general. I noticed there was a lot of similar styles and similar dergs together, so I went looking for the source and found wof.
Me to I loved dragons before knowing it !
This series definitely holds a special place in my heart alongside the Rangers Apprentice as my intro into fantasy books
I will 100% cover Rangers Apprentice on this channel. Which did you read first?
Goodness I NEVER see anyone mention Ranger's Apprentice.
@@exitsexaminedI would recommend started with the original series, the first book being the Ruins of Gorlan
Rangers Apprentice is my favourite series of all time!!! Never met someone else who loves them!
I can't believe youtube is adding blue comments and this is how I find out??
Man i love how genuine you are about these books, like you really feel like you like these books and are passionate.
Thanks so much for saying that! Did you read the books too? It's hard not to be passionate about them, the characters are just so good!
@@exitsexamined man I wish I did after watching these videos!! I didn’t know there were graphic novels, they look really good
Im so happy wings of fire is getting more attention because that means more people will get to see how amazing dragons can be if they aren't just tools for humans to use or slay!
Yeah! Are there other series you know of doing something similar?
What a good video. What a good series. What a great fandom.
Would love to, I sent an email with my discord!
yooo JMA!!
I like wof
As a WoFtuber, describing the fandom as "mildly insane" and "endearingly unhinged" is an understatement lol. I'm glad you enjoy the series as much as we do, great video btw! :]
29:00 Actually, Tui recently gave us some updates on the TV show on an interview livestream.
Oh cool! Was there an interview or article where she mentions that? Might drop it in the description
Have kept up with the series as it's been published, as I still love dragons very very much
Oh nice! What did you think of the last arc compared to the first two? I saw some people were a bit divided on it!
Thanks for talking about my favourite book series, my guy. Good vid
Hey my pleasure, just cool to find other people into WoF!

I absolutely love this series. It is what got me into writing and now I'm writing my own individual series, hoping to one day maybe publish it

@@hallowedtalon8106 thank you so much!
Sounds really interesting! How is the entire series, like as a whole? I put it on my list and I might cover it one day!
@@exitsexamined please do! It's excellent and underrated
@@exitsexamined I actually haven't gotten around to picking up the entire series. I found them a while ago. . .but haven't had the hobby money to finish getting the whole series.
I forgot how much of these books i read. Loved darkstalker as a kid but completely forgot about it till just as you put the cover up
Time to read it again!
There’s so much lore. It would take hours to go through it all
I’m so glad I found this series in 4th grade, it sparked my love for reading along with Harry Potter, and I am still so obsessed with it.

Animorphs and Everworld by K.A Applegate also change perspective between the different protagonists in each book
Stay tuned to the channel in the next few weeks!
How can you read a book in an HOUR? For me reading a 300-page book takes a day, minimum
@@Someperson12532 I had a sheltered childhood with no internet access and not very many friends so books became my escape from a very young age. Wings of Fire is also a series for a younger audience so they aren’t difficult to read at all and super easy to move through. It also helps if you’ve read it before.
@@Someperson12532I'm a pretty fast reader too, I can get through one in about three or four hours. (It also helps that I'm my mid 20's)

Hey thanks so much, honestly really incredible someone would take 30 minutes to watch something I made, glad you enjoyed it!!
It took me weeks or months to finish Moonwalk by Michael Jackson, which was a book I wanted to read since middle school, but I managed to read Dragonslayer less than 24 hours (which was rare for me)
It would be nice to see platonic ships normalized and see that not all ships are healthy and liking the ship doesn’t mean that you support it or see it as a “one-all-be all.”
Great video, it’s fantastic your take on the series was perfect. I think you covered almost everything major with the fandom and book series!!

Wings of fire is definitely one of the most oc driven fandoms I’ve ever been in, you aren’t a wings of fire fan without one! Most of the fandom at this point doesn’t even focus that much on the canon characters as much as they do on oc’s!
23:17 hands down, these were my favorite books in the whole franchise. And that's from someone who loved the main series
Man, this Wings of Fire thing seems awesome! I gotta read it sometime!
(Great analysis video)
Thanks so much for the kind words!
Cascade! What you’ve read the series before this
Ah, Wings of Fire! The only 'fandom' I'm even remotely involved in these days. I'm just gonna infodump/share real quick, lol!
The Good:
-ADORE a series from the perspective of dragons (as someone with a special interest in anything dragon related). The lore, dragon abilities/tribes, and worldbuilding are just enough to really snag your attention, but loose enough for you to easily add and modify as much as you'd like.
-The books are very easy and simple to read, while still touching upon some darker topics
-The fans get so creative with fantribes, AUs, OCs, and so much more, it's so cool to see! i regularly browse UA-cam for any cool new AMVs and whatnot
-There's a TV series in the works that I'm SO EXCITED FOR!!
They have a trade route with the SeaWings, and will very rarely get any visitors from other tribes (I have a Sky/Forge hybrid OC named Vulcana who's also a Firescales and lives in the Forge, and a Sea/Forge OC named Malachite, who established the SeaWing trade route when she was a young adult)
The Bad:
-Humans becoming a main thing out of nowhere really peeved me off.
WOOOOOO WINGS OF FIRE
Man, I love this series so much, and I really love how tui prioritizes strong world building and fan creativity, because the fan made stuff can be really good sometimes. Also, I highly doubt this would ever happen ever, but wouldn’t it be cool if Patrick page voiced darkstalker in the show (if the show even includes arc 2 idk if it does) idk I just thought that would be an awesome choice if it would be possible (also this video introduced me to ur channel and I am now subbing :)
My intro into books
Nice! Just curious what was your second?
I started reading Redwall because of your previous video and enjoy it. I'm glad you're going over a series I read in High School, after reading Warrior Cats in middle school.
Edit: If anyone who hasn't read the series sees this comment, read Darkstalker if you’re interested. It's the best book in the entire series, and you don't need context for the story because it's a singular book set in a completely different time period.
Hey! Cool you're reading Redwall, how do you like it? Darkstalker is great by the way!
12:10 Animorphs was switching perspectives between the main characters each book about 16 years before this series started.
@fat6776 Guess Age of Fire needed more shipping and teen drama
I just wanted to point out that at 3:50 you were talking about MudWings while showing pictures of SandWings
Thank you for that, other people have mentioned it as well, in the future I will write an apology email to the official mudwing government
This is the series that got my kids into reading for fun. I love them too.
I have loved this book series since i was 8 (im now 14) and still an active part of the fandom. It actually makes me mad when people say its just a kids series.😭
This was my fav series when I was younger
i adore wings of fire, and ive been reading it for several years now, it was honestly the only book series ive managed to read all the way through. I've now started reading warrior cats because of the fact tui helped to wright a few of the books and i wanted to check the series out.
OMG i am gonna go NUTS. I cant believe theres a video about WoF, i rarely see anyone talk about the books. I ADORE THEM
I think the closest we got to a videogame or animation of WOF was Day Of Dragons, which was a kickstarter around the second series being realeased, though it was and is completely unrelated as far as i know.
A more specific magic system like the plant speak one with leafwings is more fun to me
It's a horrible power system. It's a plot device to do whatever the author wants.
Animorphs was an arguably YA series that did one book for each main character perspective in a cycle. It was great too.
Not dude using sandwings for the mudwings part lmao. Also a shame humans are so important in the third arc and become involved right towards the end
Got to grow up with these books and got me interested in larger fantasy series (calling it game of thrones but with dragons was perfect lol). Still remember seeing Clay roaring on that book fair shelf... I hope the series gets the adaptation it deserves. In a better artstyle than the comics at least...
I think that first cover is also what got me too. I didn't mention it in the video but I'd think maybe an anime in the setting might be cool!
Tamora Pierce's Circle of Magic quartets also switch perspectives between each book of the main group of youngsters. Highly recommend, one of my favorite series I reread often.
Looks right up my alley! How do you think it compares to WOF? Did it ever get any adaptations?
13:58 Albatross said in Legends: Darkstalker that animus magic can do anything except for bring the dead back to life.
Sounds like you really should read the "Age of Fire" series by E. E. Knight. Not only is the entire series told entirely from the view points of dragons ( the same 3 siblings across all 6 books), _its even darker_ then this series. MUCH more Game of Thrones-y.
You should cover epithet erased prison of plastic😊 it’s one of my favorite books currently
I'll check it out! How does it. compare to WoF? Is it like a series or just a book?
@@exitsexamined it’s one book right now, but the author has said that the book will be five books long
18:01 most of the fandom ranges from middle school and college! And lots of people with talent! And the ages go on!
Wof and eragon being the main players of the literary fantasy future
Dragons baby!
Yeah,boy!
Yeah,boy!
Oooh. If you loved seeing dragons in a different pov, then I'd suggest Seraphina. Its a totally new take on dragons that I've never seen before!
The Age Of Fire series is told from the perspective of 3 dragon siblings trying to survive on their own as hatchlings after a tragedy.
This series was amazing- Assassin and Gloria were my OG ennemies to lovers
Weirdly for how much I love dragons, I never read this series, probably because the first book came out when I was a junior in high school. I might have to check it out, although I'm currently in the grips of a case of Pokémadness for the first time in nearly 20 years.
(Totally unrelated to the leaks but it is incredibly weird that the biggest leak in Pokémon history happened just a couple months after I started getting back into the series for the first time since the early 2000s. I think I might be cursed.)
When it comes to the protag shifting between books in a sort of rotation, Animorphs comes to mind.
I KNOW THAT COVER
I OWN THAT ONE
Darkstalkers story is good oml, I’ve reread so many times
I only got to see the first series w those first five + later owning Darkstalker,, I kinda moved on from it and it’s not like I had the chance for the paperback of the others, but still, it has a very special place in my heart.
"we have mudwings" (only shows photos of sandwings)
For perspective shifting narrator wise, Animorphs has a different narrator each book. Tottally recommend that ooooh so friendly ya book series XD
Thanks for letting me help :P
Thank you for the help!!
@@exitsexamined you're welcome! It was very fun (although slightly stressful due to us clearly being in opposite time zones lol) to help!
I’m an older WOF fan (turning 20 this weekend) and my sona for wings of fire is a tribrid! Rather than making him op though, due to being mixed he lacks most abilities
Wings of fire is literally how I learned to draw dragons bru
Everytime i see that artstyle and dragons on a book i can’t help but think…ERAGON!!!
I wonder how big the crossover is between fans haha
3:59 That's a sandwing:3
Series that has dark themes and crazy things going on, but the author is actually a really sweet person? Close enough, welcome back Animorphs.
I will 100% cover Animorphs on this channel
@@exitsexamined good luck!
I still have every book in the series just in the corner of my room as a hardback copy. I should probably re-read them at some point.
“Pi-ree-ah” is crazy
You mention not knowing other series where the books alternate perspectives, I'd like to hold up Animorphs as an example. Also! I'd love to see a vid about them.
why’d you use burn for the mudwings? she’s a sandwing!
Maybe a hot take but I preferred the Books 6-10 Arc over the Books 1-5 Arc
That IS a hot take haha. What makes them better you think?
@@exitsexamined honestly? Probably the main cast. I liked the Dragonets of Destiny, but I loved the Jade Winglet.
This video is great! love it!
Thanks so much for the kind words, glad you enjoyed! Love your profile picture
@ your welcome, and thanks! One of my fans made it for me!
Love this series
"Correct me if I'm wrong"
K you asked for it lol: Animorphs also shifted POV for each book.
Isn't Animorphs a super long series though? Is it the same type of like one friend group? I will cover it on the channel soon after I reread them but I can't for the life of me remember anything about the series haha
@@exitsexamined Yeah it is
