    sometimes i get pseudo-nostalgia for when subcultures were more divided, just to get that in-crowd feeling and the power to shape history together with your friends. nowadays self-expression feels much more fluid, and it's harder to find a crowd to really belong to. but maybe having multiple dynamic interests being able to bond with different groups isn't that bad.

    My definition of goth: a post punk, music-borne subculture that focuses heavily on the colour black, pale makeup, black clothing, heavy black boots, chains, piercings, tattoos, etc (although one does not need to have or wear these all the time, or even at all, to be goth) and on the dark and macabre, such as death and death-related imagery and activities, horror movies and programmes, vampires, Halloween, graveyards, the movies of Tim Burton, spookiness in general, the Addams family, the deceased, ghosts, skeletons and skulls, as well as other supernaturals and even animals like bats, wolves, spiders, ravens, crows, etc.

    As a teen in the 90’s there were always «goth-kids» at school and movies like «the craft» were definately worshipped 😅 I had many goth friends but since I always prefer many colours the look was never for me, though I liked the music. For me goth opened the door later to Harajuku fashion and Lolita from Japan. Nowadays I barely see any goth groups of teens on the street 🤔 I feel like in general teens all look alike fashionwise nowadays with very few unique looks 🤷‍♀️ I like how goth is quite diverse, age and looks. You can looks as simple or as elaburate as you want which appeals to many different people.

  • @kdaniels9750

    Went to my first goth club in 94 and for over nearly 20 years. Never
    really considered myself much of a goth just darker than other people. I think goth is a blanket term and always was. If you think about an obsession with death or undead beauty it's aligned more with vampirism and the macabre. Though more in a romantic sense. The video is a nice researched point of view. Most people I feel turned to goth for the alternative lifestyle and acceptance of homosexuality(alternative lifestyles) or found it ultimately rebellious and cool. It's all just for the fun of it ultimately. You're depressed, young and enjoy somewhere you fit and you don't fit in with Miss Betty the cheerleader or Joel the Jock you will definitely have found it over the years to be a warmer place to find acceptance. I was quite a writer and learned a lot of skills that got me a lot of girls a lot friends and some fun times........today it's not that way it's hard to express yourself purely on the Web. Though ironically goths embraced that before anyway as a subculture I was there and saw that. Though IRL is a bit lacking today.

    Nothing happened, and it didn't go anywhere... Goth is alive and very well, and I for one would rather hang with the likes of "vampires and ghouls" - as opposed to some of these "self-righteous, cleaner than thou" types that are always pointing their fingers at people like me and calling us "Freaks"...
    OK...All fine well, and good --- But when you self-righteous types want to let loose, party, and play around, who are you always calling upon to provide it for you? ----- (:X THE FREAK! X:) 'Nuff said!

    I wouldn't call this a great video, but it contained mostly accurate information, so I'd say it's good. Particularly the line you drew between tribe -> architecture -> literature -> subculture was quite accurate. I don't believe gatekeeping is as much of an issue as it's commonly made out to be… how does one gatekeep on the internet? Simply ignore what the cretins say and listen to the music you want, and do your research-it's all right there in front of you.

    May i reccomend, what ever happened to Big Wolf on Campus or the short lived in america at least House of Anubis (i think there was also another highschool based mystery with the main cast each having a super power and they lived at school in a dome or something. I cant remeber it as well as House of Anubis. But it gave Strange Days at Black Holsey High vibes.

    Culture has to be flexible to survive, man. It's not confusing to me. I've been a goth since... um.... well. I'm old. I do have to say it's a little frustrating when people label random things as goth that totally aren't. You don't have to live All Things Goth All The Time to qualify. I listen to trance also, fite me lol.

    Im in my 30s and active in the scene (check out my channel 🦇) and all I can say from traveling around to different scenes within the US and outside is that goth is more alive than ever! The clubs are always packed, there are countless new bands and concerts on the weekly, and so many functions that cater to the subculture. My favorite place to experience the scene is Mexico City which already has a vibrant alternative culture, but their goth scene is unlike anywhere I’ve ever seen! Their clubs like El Real Under are the closest I’ve seen to being in an actual Batcave style club and the bands that come from that city are making some of the most refreshing music in the post-punk, industrial, darkwave and deathrock sub genres of the movement. Stay spooky my darklings 🖤 great video!!

    How does someone make a video essay about goth culture without mentioning Marilyn Manson? Whether people love him or hate him, he brought goths popularity to new heights.

    • @exitsexamined
      @exitsexamined  7 місяців тому +3

      Fair point! I thought about mentioning him but the consensus seems to be that he's not goth in most reddit threads I researched on it: www.reddit.com/r/marilyn_manson/comments/d7mf9n/marilyn_manson_goth_or_industrial/
      I generally try to keep the narratives focused and with something as huge as goth there's only so many people / bands I can realistically mention as much as I'd love to!
