I picked up mouse guard issue #1 at a comic shop when it first came out. I liked it, but I love mice, they are such intersting, complex and adorable little creatures.
I’ve never heard of this series. But growing up, I loved bones, along with fantasy books like the last apprentice and rangers apprentice. I’m def gonna read mouse guard to some tavern music haha
I first heard of this series as an adult last year. I bought the first three books and loved them! Any kids I'll have in the future will definitely grow up with them. I really should get the rest of the series, rpg, and maybe the game, too.
Do a series on The Mists of Avalon please. The book series is amazing and deserves so much more praise, I think it's some type of "lost to time" series due to the author's actions (crimes actually)
You know I don't think that's the first time someone's mentioned that, how would you compare the series itself to Mouse Guard? I'll check it out and i added it to the list!
Ah, perfect timing, this series crossed my mind a few days ago. You have given me much-needed hope. Oh, and the little board game is good fun, a simple yet wonderful addition to any board game collection.
Great overview. Have the TTRPG and almost all of the comics. The only one i am missing is one that came out in 2021 called "The Owlhen Caregiver & Other Tales." It looks great and need to find a way to get it in print. RPG is amazimg for world building. So much thought was put into the history and setting it definitely gave me LOTR vibes. Im converting everything into EZD6 rules but atill use all of the RPG box set stuff as an awesome reference. The game Swords & Strongholds is great. We collect board games and it is very well designed. Tons of fun. There is another card game referenced in the comic too - wondering if we will ever see that game sometime. Overall you can just tell this man loves this world. You hit it spot on that while the setting is cool, it's the characters that make it so great.
Hey super cool you got your hands on swords and strongholds! I really wanted to play it for this video but on the official site I couldn't find it listed anymore. How did you like playing it? Does it hold up after awhile?
I'm mildly curious why you'd want to convert a mechanically simple and well designed game, into another rules system that both functionally operate in very similar ways? Did you try playing it RAW?
@@exitsexamined ive only read the first two books recently actually and I quite enjoyed them. Theres many more books as well but overall theres a lot of fans of the series and from what ive heard it has an interesting history especially as you can see how it couldve been the inspiration for a lot of other stories such as superman. It also had the disney movie which i thought was really good but the online consensus of why it failed in the box office was due to disney not marketing it correctly.
So lucky I had the whole series in my school library back in the day. Read them front to back a few times. The table top game is really good for anyone into them as well.
what an amazing video, thanks for showing me this incredible serie, it's really interesting to see the contrast between such lovely creatures and this fantasy-dark world.
I have never heard of this series before, but this popped up on my recommended and the art looked familiar after seeing some of the new MTG cards. Very cool concept, definitely heavily inspired aspects of that Bloomburrow set MTG released and it's cool they brought the author on board for some gorgeous illustrations to boot!
Mouse Guard, such a great comic book, I also drifted away from it so thank you for the update all these years later. Also remember Mouse Templar (?) around the same time as Mouser Guard dropped got published.
Listening to you talk about this fantasy graphic novel reminded me of the fantasy graphic novel from years ago, Bone. I haven't thought about it in years but definitely will revisit it now haha Thanks!
Burning wheel (the engine the game uses) has some pretty bad heads, here's hoping the Mouse Guard writers didn't have their works too terribly corrupted by them.
Great video! Very cool series and the card game is good fun! For anyone that likes Mouse Guard, I would also recommend the comic series "Squarriors". It's a short run, only 9 comics but it's really well done and the art is phenomenal. Really awesome, brutal medieval style warfare between the animals after humans have disappeared. Stuff people left behind like scalpels and knives and tools become their spears and weapons. It also has a card game, but I've never tried it.
that test footage that came out a couple years ago broke was some of the coolest stuff I’ve ever seen. Still hoping someday it gets a great animated adaptation
I want a classic style cartoon/drawn animation not a cgi movie. Treasure Planet style. I cant understand why the studios dont produce cartoons in that style anymore.

@@exitsexaminedSimilar and different. You have sword fighting animals, a dedicated royal guard serving the people, and the first book also has this feeling of creeping darkness all through out it. However, the series does have a touch of magic involved and the tone can vary from book to book. It’s also kind of like Redwall where the size of the animals is not made entirely clear and it lacks the harsh survival theme of Mouse Guard.
Thank you for reminding me redwall exists, I think at least the first trilogy in the series deserves a re-read. This could be an incredible animated cartoon.
MOUSE GUARD MENTIONED!!! YEAAHH!!!!! Really though this series is a beautiful piece of art and it's kinda crazy how rarely I hear people talking about it.
I remeber my aunt got me the first of these when I was like 11 or something. I looked at the front thinking oh okay some generic adventure book for kids with some stylish art. I didn't plan on reading it at first but got bored one day while on a long road trip and just so happened to have this in the car. I picked up and finished it twice. It was so good I thought to myself there must be dozens of these maybe hundreds this must be either a really large series or going to be one. I was dissapionted to learn there was only two at the time and picked up the second one. For ten long years now I probably haven't thought of this series but now I need to go find the other books.
Yeah it is a short and sweet series, but the side books and standalone comics are well worth the reads if you can find them! Also the black ax is excellent and I think don't quote me, feels longer than the rest
For anyone looking for similar books, Mouse heart is a book series I used to read when I was younger and I honestly think it should be talked about more. I definitely recommend it
I reamber reading one of the books when I was quite young and i never new the name, I read the one with the owl in winter and love the vibe of the main charecters bieng stalk by some kind of unstoppable force where they soon choose to face it in the end.
Really loving this video. It might be the thing that makes me start collecting books again. I was wondering if you have done or could do a deep dive into "The Dragon Lance" series, my dad has a few of the old books and I never got deep into reading it.
This had me when it mentioned the series being like Attack on Titan. I checked out and binged Fall 1152, Winter 1152, and The Black Axe in 2 days. This video basically made me a Mouse Guard fan
Whoa thank you so much for giving the video and then the series a shot! Super cool you got the books, what did you think? Did you have any favorite moments?
@@exitsexamined Basically Celanawe's entire character arc was the peak for me. He was my favorite character like OMG 😭 (also I wish I could get the books)
I can't believe I never picked this up until just now. I was an avid reader of the Redwall books throughout my preteen years and early teens, but by the time this first came out I was about 17 and too cool for talking animal stories. I was such an idiot! Glad I'm mature enough to enjoy talking animals again 😅
I have the mouse scale replica of the black axe😂 my dad saw me reading an issue and asked why i was reading a baby comic, showed him the inside with the battle with the fox. 😅
I definitely want to check this series out, despite the hiatus. I do think this fantasy subgenre is called "Animal Xenofiction", which can come in two versions: Naturalistic (Duncton Wood, Watership Down) and Anthro (Redwall, Mouseguard). Xenofiction in general is very broad, as it can mean just about any non-human things (so Toy Story, for example, is Xenofiction). I personally prefer to call it "Animal Fantasy" to differentiate from the broader spectrum of XF, as I don't like to imagine WD exists in the same niche as Cars.
A long time ago I was at at thrift store and I picked up my first graphic novel called "The Autumnlands". I've been meaning to check out for about 6 years. The art looked cool. No idea what it's about.

Maybe this comment will get a pin so everyone can see and give that indie gem a shot 🫶🏻 great video!!
If I scrolled further down I found someone else brought it up too haha!
Honestly I should have just mentioned it in the video! But thank you so much!
You're consistently putting out some really HQ content covering some of my favorite franchises. Bravo!
Hey thank you so much for the kind words!
Redwall Meets Berserk: That's basically the Art-style of the Official Red-wall Graphic novel! It also felt a tad darker too. (I wish we had more of that.)
18:57 Actually there is a Video game that looks like this Series. Its called Tails of Iron, and this thing really is Red-Wall if it was styled like Berserk's tone. It's GRIM!!
I actually covered Tails of Iron in another channel I have! The devs were 100% inspired by Mouse Guard, they mentioned it a few times in interviews!
That's interesting the redwall graphic novel was dark, do you have a copy? I'd love to see some images for a video I'm doing on it!
Glad I found your channel. Its cool to see someone covering so many books and stories from my childhood.
Thanks so much for checking out my channel, honestly just so cool to find other people into the same series I loved growing up too!
I've had my eye on this series for awhile now, and I have wondered if it's a good series to pick up. So i am so glad you're covering it
One of my favorite series, great video.
Hey my pleasure, this series deserves more love!
I picked up mouse guard issue #1 at a comic shop when it first came out. I liked it, but I love mice, they are such intersting, complex and adorable little creatures.
Oh nice did you ever check out the other issues or did you stop at #1?
Another great video! If you’re interested in more series for potential videos then the Belgariad, Shannara, and John Carter of Mars/Barsoom are a few.
Belgariad is 100% going to happen probably in winter, the rest of those I'll have to check out! How is John Carter / Barsoom in your opinion?
Hey it's my pleasure! So you never heard of it before? Do you usually read graphic novels?
I have never heard of this series before, but this popped up on my recommended and the art looked familiar after seeing some of the new MTG cards. Very cool concept, definitely heavily inspired aspects of that Bloomburrow set MTG released and it's cool they brought the author on board for some gorgeous illustrations to boot!
IVE BEEN LOOKING FOR THIS FOR SO LONG!!! I read this series at my local library when I was a kid! I’m going to reread the entire thing now lol
The genre you're referring to at the beginning is called Xenofiction.
Interesting! I guess that's a broad category too encompassing basically anything not human, dragons, aliens, not medieval animals! Good to know!
"Flesh Queens of Venus" is a good series.
Oh I'll have to check it out - how does it compare to mouse guard you think?
Gah damn the art style is so good
We’re due for another mouse movie
Mouse Guard, such a great comic book, I also drifted away from it so thank you for the update all these years later. Also remember Mouse Templar (?) around the same time as Mouser Guard dropped got published.
Listening to you talk about this fantasy graphic novel reminded me of the fantasy graphic novel from years ago, Bone. I haven't thought about it in years but definitely will revisit it now haha Thanks!
Burning wheel (the engine the game uses) has some pretty bad heads, here's hoping the Mouse Guard writers didn't have their works too terribly corrupted by them.
Oh interesting! What do you mean by bad heads? Sorry if that's a TTRPG term I might not be familiar with
Great video! It also has a card game, but I've never tried it.
huh, I saw this guy promote his books in a library in michigan over 10 years ago it feels like, glad I get an update on the guy
that test footage that came out a couple years ago broke was some of the coolest stuff I’ve ever seen. Still hoping someday it gets a great animated adaptation
I used to watch animals of farthing wood after school back in the day. loved the secret of nimh and watership down. So this is right up my alley 👍
totally forgot about this series!! thank you!
what a wild series of events in a SINGLE video
I want a classic style cartoon/drawn animation not a cgi movie. Treasure Planet style. I cant understand why the studios dont produce cartoons in that style anymore.
Actually now you mention it I do think that would probably be a better match for this series compared to CGI
Great video, subscribed!
I’m so happy to have seen this. I pulled this from the library of my new school in the 3rd grade. I’m 22 now and never forgot that memory
Whoa super cool your library had this, wish mine did!
Met te artist at comic con. Nice guy, gave me some great advice.
Discovered this channel about a week ago, subscribed, binged all your videos, then forgot about it and was just reminded of you again with this video in my recommended, thank you youtube 🙏
also redwall goes so hard
Whoa thanks so much! I hope you didn't binge watch them all the way to the first ones haha. But glad UA-cam brought you back and hopefully this series seemed interesting to you? Had you heard of Mouse Guard before?
@@exitsexamined I hadnt, but I love watching your breakdowns of these series since I am pretty much always interested in them, and I love Redwall and Berserk so I was sure I'd enjoy the vid. I think the Eragon vid was the first one I had recommended to me and I just went down the line watching all of them lol
Please take a look at the Mistmantle series next!
Hey thanks so much for the suggestion! How would you compare Mistmantle to Mouse Guard? Similar vibe or totally different? I added it to the list!
MOUSE GUARD MENTIONED!!! THIS WAS PART OF MY CHILDHOOD!!!
Thank you for reminding me redwall exists, I think at least the first trilogy in the series deserves a re-read. This could be an incredible animated cartoon.
If you like Redwall stay tuned to the channel in the next few days or next week!
I really like the idea behind this channel.
Thanks for saying that! Is there anything in particular you'd want me to cover?
@@exitsexamined I watch alot of anime and read lots of manga. So I'd be interested in that.
Or the owl book series.
MOUSE GUARD MENTIONED!!! YEAAHH!!!!!
Really though this series is a beautiful piece of art and it's kinda crazy how rarely I hear people talking about it.
Honestly it's been my pleasure talking about it! Do you other graphic novels like it? I'd love to cover more under appreciated stuff on the channel!
I read this SOOOOOOO many times I love this series
Love mouse guard, I got all the books and can’t wait for the next one
I definitely recommend it
I hadn't heard of it before this! Is it a single book or a series? Maybe I'll check it out sometime!
@@exitsexamined it’s a series, about three books if I remember it right
Met Petersen last month at an event at one of my LGSs. Super cool guy to talk to and really down to earth.
I watched as many interviews as I could with him and yeah he seemed great, especially with younger fans
Cute lil mouse hope he livin his best life
Every show terrified of being depicted on this channel
I reamber reading one of the books when I was quite young and i never new the name, I read the one with the owl in winter and love the vibe of the main charecters bieng stalk by some kind of unstoppable force where they soon choose to face it in the end.
Really loving this video. It might be the thing that makes me start collecting books again.
I was wondering if you have done or could do a deep dive into "The Dragon Lance" series, my dad has a few of the old books and I never got deep into reading it.
Hey thanks so much for checking it out! I'm happy to say I have already done a video on Dragonlance, it's on the channel!
3:22 Anyone else catch the Millennium Falcon in the bones?
Omg! That's hilarious! Great catch
Not disappointed
Might become a fan just on the theme
Would highly recommend checking it out!
Small saga, Leo is literally the thumbnail!
I remember seeing the tabletop game for Mouseguard at a winery in Michigane in a stack with basic games like checkers.
Never heard of this! Just bought the Fall 1152 hardcover and I look forward to reading this during the fall, in bed, after dinner!
Let me know what you think! That sounds super cozy though!
Bro RedWall back in the day dope ass story
Great video!
David is still doing art, he is on Twitch streaming the rework one of his older books currently. He has been very slowly working on a new book.
Yeah I think I covered weasel war in the video! Cool to know about the reworks though!
Damn, you made me want to re-read the series.
I have the mouse scale replica of the black axe😂 my dad saw me reading an issue and asked why i was reading a baby comic, showed him the inside with the battle with the fox. 😅
Thank you for introducing me to this
Hey it's my pleasure! Did you get one of the books? Hope you like it!
@@exitsexamined Reading it now actually. Loving it so far. Thanks again
I used to read redwall to my little sisters and they loved it
I definitely want to check this series out, despite the hiatus.
This would be a cool video game setting. It could be like Dark Souls or Elden Ring only you fight snakes and owls. That would be really cool.
A long time ago I was at at thrift store and I picked up my first graphic novel called "The Autumnlands". I've been meaning to check out for about 6 years. The art looked cool. No idea what it's about.
