What a strange world we live in were a mega corporation like Apple would develop an adaptation of a novel against mega corporations.

Neuromancer is my favorite book of all time. Shout out to one of my high school teachers for picking it out and handing it to me one day after class. I didn't read it till years later and it's been in my waking thoughts ever since.

Gibson literally typed the book on an old school typewriter... He predicted cyberpunk and so far his predictions are coming true

There is also a card game called In Android: Netrunner. One of the best card games ever created, in my opinion. In it one person takes the role of a hacker intent on revealing the corruption within big business (called the Runner), and the other person plays the mega-corporation itself, which is trying to protect its assets and stop the hacker from breaking in. The gameworld is based heavily on Cyberpunk, in particular William Gibson's Neuromancer, and borrows it's themes and terminology directly from the book (jack in/out, run, ICE, ice breaker). The game has been discontinued but is currently being kept alive through dedication of avid fans.

What a coincidence, I just finished reading Neuromancer (for the first time) a few days ago and am now reading Count Zero. Gibson’s writing style reminds me of Raymond Chandler; it’s like an old noir thriller from the 1940’s but set in a not too distant future.

One mistake everyone makes. Even this video makes. Night city is only the small port city in Chiba. The big high tech city everyone thinks about when they think of cyberpunk is the Sprawl in the former United States that the later part of the book takes place in. Night city is only in the beginning of the novel and not to be confused with Night city from the cyberpunk table top game and video game

    • @exitsexamined

oh did I say that night city was the sprawl in the video? If so wasn't intentional!

Nice video. I love your series and how you explore these forgotten corridors and passages like a cultural warehouse for storing paradigm shifts. Taking apart the fundamental aspects of why something is nostalgic in the first place or comparing the medium with other similar artworks. @@exitsexamined No problem, brother. I literally had an idea for a channel like this a long time ago, but you've taken it to another level! I bet it will grow fast because people love vaporwave aesthetic (maybe you could do a video on that?) and retro stuff like dead shopping malls because it allows us to put on those rose tinted glasses, if only temporarily. Hey thank you so much for the kind words and watching the video. It is crazy just the sheer amount of science fiction has been written and out of all it Gibson was probably one of the most accurate in predicting things. Let's just hope he's not right about AI lol

    • @coolnegative
      @coolnegative 7 місяців тому

@@exitsexamined for sure! Seriously though, I actually worry just a pinch about all the AI engines coming out that are by so many developers, that one of 'em will eventually become self aware. Seriously, sci-fi literature has been uncannily accurate about so much. Maybe it's a time loop, like the AI sends itself back in time to direct things to bring itself into being. So if there was no AI, then it can't go back in time to create itself, so it gets stuck going around and around!🤯😨 Skynet is real, yo!!!

It was hard for me to read neuromancer because how O.G. it was, like driving an classic car. I never finished Neuromancer, but i did read the other two books; *Count Zero* and *Mona Lisa Overdrive*
But my go-to book by Gibson wasn't even his other books, but the short story *The Gernsback Continuum* now that man me think and her understood retrofuturism to a Tee, made me think

  • @KelsaRavenlock

Idoru fits in the sprawl without actually being a sprawl book.
That would have been a great one to adapt early as the AI in it is a virtual idol (a vocaloid) and the book came out 11 years before Hatsune Miku debuted.
At the time the book came out a virtual idol was Lynn Minmay or Kyoko Date an animated cartoon much like the Gorillaz but the Idol in this story is a semi independent entity on track for a full awakening.
It is part of the Bridge trilogy that came after the sprawl series and the Bridge trilogy's themes then lead to the Jackpot Trilogy.
The Bridge trilogy focuses on the race to corporate control of cyberspace and emerging tech and lays the groundwork for the world of the sprawl.
The Bridge btw refers to the damaged San Fransisco to Oakland bridge and is the reason the loTek's lived on a bridge in the movie "Johnny Mnemonic" instead of on domes and why people in the videos go there to buy tech.
On a side note the Bigend trilogy is worth a look as well though it is the farthest from the sprawl world and set in 1992.

It is quite interesting if AppleTV will adapt the book into a series. Even though they made many changes, I think they did a great job with adapting Asimovs The Foundation into a series. I thought the quality and acting were quite good. So I have some expectations for this adaptation as well regarding the quality of the series they will produce 🤔

You seem to be giving too much credit to 80s movies and not enough to actual authors and publications where it started.
No mention of New Worlds magazine for example even though it is the focal point of new wave scifi and what would become know as cyberpunk.
You seem to always jump into subjects in the middle and ignore any info before the mid 80's.
Gibson is definitely the biggest name in the game and our definition of cyberpunk has been consolidated by his sprawl series but the history doesn't start with him and Ridley Scott.

I would agree with you, I don't think everything can or should be made about the franchise! I view this channel not as arguing for franchise but rather exploring the history and stories of incredible media from the past. This does involve looking at the future of these series as well and seeing if there's anything there but the main point is - remembering and celebrating them.
