    Sorry for the random question: On the Fantom, can Chord Memory and the Arpeggiator be used at the same time, or is it one or the other?

    • @contemporarysynth
      @contemporarysynth 3 дні тому

      They sure can! If you click both buttons (and enable Arp in one or more zones) the keyboard will arpeggiate all the notes in the Chord Memory chord - even if you only have one note pressed. If you only select Arpeggio, it will only arpeggiate the notes you press down.

      Good point. Sometimes it's hard to know all the subtle differences between the FA-06, the FANTOM-06, and the FANTOM-6. It wouldn't surprise me if this something one of them (FA-06) can't do but the others can.

      Thanks, George. Your encouragement keeps me coming back! I typically use a generic webcam for myself, and two cell phone cameras for the keyboard. The phones sit on a board that goes over the keyboard and is held up by two speaker stands on either side of my table. I'll include a picture for you next time. It's pretty low budget! I record the audio with a Tascam Model 12 mixer, the webcam video with the Windows Camera app, and the computer screen with OBS Studio. I build the sheet music with Sibelius, I mix the audio with Cakewalk and I make the videos with DaVinci Resolve. I'm still experimenting with (and learning about) different aspects of at least one of those every time. Definitely a work in progress! Funny story: I normally put a paper shade over the cell phones to reduce the glare on the keyboard screen. This time I forgot to put it up, so in the video you can see the shade sitting on the desk to my left, and the glare on the FANTOM screen through the whole thing. Oh well. Maybe next time!

    Hi. Are you familiar with the sampling function. I would like to sample an acustic guitar with articulation and i found in the roland not quite realistic. Also saxophone as well. Could you do a video step by step how to sample batural instrument and turn them as a tone with multisample spread on all keyboard? I prefer Korg orchestra sounds

    • @contemporarysynth
      @contemporarysynth 2 місяці тому

      Good question, but sampling a guitar or sax would be challenging - and I don't think we'd ever get a result as good as all the professional tones that are out there, including some good ones on the Fantom. I recommend checking out some of those, and possibly editing them a little if needed, and save your sampling talents for unique sounds that only you can find or make.

      There are some great sounds on the Roland Cloud. I showed a few of them in the video I just posted last weekend on MIDI synths. Zenology Lite is one example, but there are others. Some are even free. If you don't like the Fantom sounds you might not like the online tones either, but it might be worth taking a look.

    Great tutorial from somebody who knows his stuff. Off topic,I’m thinking of taking the plunge on a Fantom. I want to sample my vinyl to the Fantom. How do I hook up my turntable amp to the Fantom. Can I do this directly with a cable (What inputs) from the amp straight into the Fantom.

    • @contemporarysynth
      @contemporarysynth 2 місяці тому

      Hi - you sure can! You can come in with the stereo 1/4" jakcs, or through the balanced mono mic jack. Just be sure to enable the Audio In option on the Fantom, via Menu/Effects Edit/Audio In (select Line In or Mic as appropriate). I would use an Aux Out from your amp or mixer, or come directly from the turntable. Good luck!

    Have you tried eqing and tone editing the piano Sounds?The piano patches sound clanky and very thin as compared to other models and brands. Also,I feel the sustain doesn't really feel natural when playing chords. (PS: I really like the the keyboard and plan on buying it but the factory piano sounds are a deal breaker for me)

    • @contemporarysynth
      @contemporarysynth 3 місяці тому

      Yeah, I used to adjust the eq every time - especially the Mid Gain - for a long time but then I kind of got used to the sounds. Now I don't even think about it. I think every electric piano sounds a little off since there are no live harmonics. This one is OK. It's really the other sounds and functionality that set it apart, IMHO. Good luck!

    Hey Paul, happy new year, this and all your videos are manna. At 14:08 you mention using headphones on the sub out rather than the headphone socket. What is the reason for this?

    • @contemporarysynth
      @contemporarysynth 3 місяці тому

      Hi, thanks! Sometimes I use the sub out as a monitor, so I can send one sound to me and a different sound to the house or, in this case, my recorder. A click track and cue notes are examples of something I might want to hear in the headphones, but wouldn't want to go anywhere else. Hence the sub out. Hope that helps!

  • @outhdare

    Thanks for doing this, I appreciate your effort greatly. For me, it is complicated, tiresome, and potentially frustrating; I would rather buy FA-06/07 which has everything integrated so I can focus on music making and not on setup, which should be automatic and by default. It's like doing the job of Roland's engineers for free.

    • @contemporarysynth
      @contemporarysynth 4 місяці тому

      I'm pretty sure you can, but I'd need a little more detail to know exactly. You can send MIDI to the fantom, then send the fantom audio back to your interface - even adding the sub out to give you two more output channels. DAW control shouldn't interfere with any that but, again, the details probably matter.

    • @contemporarysynth
      @contemporarysynth 4 місяці тому

      You sure can! It would take a little work since you'd need to get them into different tracks. Maybe try duplicating the entire drum pattern several times, then using the piano roll to delete all but one drum sound out of each track. There are a few other ways that come to mind. It might be easier to export the whole MIDI track to Logic and splitting it up there. Good luck!

    Thank you for your great tutorials! You mention at 3:30 the instruments defined in the zone will be reset when the keyboard is connected or the sample is started. This is also the case for me. Could you please explain how the instruments defined in the selected scene are retained?

    • @contemporarysynth
      @contemporarysynth 6 місяців тому

      Hi - I meant to say that the instrument selected in the *DAW* resets to whatever patch is sent to it, but in this case that doesn't matter since I'm not going to use the DAW to make any sound - I'm using the FANTOM for that. If you tell me what you're trying to do I'm happy to take another look!

      @@contemporarysynth Hi Paul, I am trying to import a midi file (Money by Pink Floyd) that I found in the Internet. Unfortunately, after connecting to the PC and playing the file on Cakewalk, the layer settings on the Fantom 0 are deleted. Is it possible to overwrite instrument settings in the midi file in order to use the midi file again at a gig? I can send you the midi-file if you need it

    • @contemporarysynth
      @contemporarysynth 6 місяців тому

      I just recreated this (I think) on my system. It seems to work best if you set the Cakewalk patch to None, so it doesn't override the keyboard tone, and set the Cakewalk channel to the Zone you're going to use on the FANTOM (e.g., channel 2 for Zone 2). Be sure to set the Cakewalk channel output to the FANTOM (with the ASIO driver selected in Preferences). You might have to try a few before it works. And be sure the channel volume is up! When you pick a FANTOM patch/voice you can save it with your scene. Once all that's set, it should work every time. Sorry if you've tried all that already! I'm happy to try out the midi file, if you think that's part of the problem: contemporarysynth@gmail.com. Good luck!

    Great video. I'm a guitar player with some keyboard basics (I have a Roland VR-09). Now, I want to buy a Fantom, but I don't know which one yet. Is this also possible with the Fantom 08 and Fantom 7?

    • @contemporarysynth
      @contemporarysynth 7 місяців тому

      Yep. The 06, 07 and 08 are identical except for number of keys. The 6, 7 and 8 (no "0") are also all the same (as each other) except for number of keys. The "0" series - 06, 07 and 08 - have fewer features than the no "0" keyboards. Roland also makes a FANTOM FA-06, FA-07 and FA-08. Same size but with even fewer features - and at a lower cost. With some basic skills you probably don't need the full capability FANTOM, but there are lots of sites that talk about the differences. Good luck!

    Thanks . So to clarify if I have a DAW and it has a midi track recorded into the DAW I can do what you did here and play that midi into one the fantoms tracks and record it in the Fantom sequencer in real time? I have ezdrummer 3 and it has a huge library of humans in midi form playing drum tracks. Very sophisticated. I also have ezbass which is the same it has midi files you can slides and mutes and ghost notes as they are real players so I was hoping to record these midi tracks into the Fantom sequencer to play back the internal Fantom drum and bass sounds. Have I got that right what your doing here? I don't want to take the computer and DAW out on the road with me if possible. Thanks so much i really love your videos they are unlike other ones and are incredibly useful. Others don't seem to do the real practical stuff , real world stuff like you do. It's awesome so thanks again

      Sorry - thought I had replied to you! Everything you said was exactly right. Hopefully you got it working by now! You can also load the midi file to your keyboard via thumbdrive, though you have to convert it to SMF (standard midi file) first. I haven't tried that myself, but there's quite a bit on it in the manual.

    Can you please help me with something that is driving me absolutely nuts...I'm trying to make an 808 kick have a long release or sustain to it, but I can not for the life of me figure out how to get the 808 kick to draw out when you hit it, something like an 808 bass or something? I don't know what I'm missing or if it's even capable on this unit, but please, any knowledge would help? Thanks...

      Hi - interestingly, if you set the Env Times to 0, in the Amp Env page of the Param section (use the Zoom view) you can make it even shorter - so it thinks it does have a long release! A more constructive answer might be to try one of the toms, since they're already longer by default. Use the Pitch Env values (i.e., sent Env Level 0 and 1 to something really low, then use Env Depth to actually change the sound). Then you can use the Amp Env to values to adjust the attack, decay, sustain, release values. Good luck!

    Your videos are awesome. Im ordering a unit but I have 1 question re daw stuff. I have EZdrummer 3 in my daw it has a ton of great midi files mapped to the ezdrummer drums you play from the DAW. You can drag these into any track on the DAW so it comes up as any track with MIDI data recorded into a daw. I was wondering is it possible to get those midi files or tracks or data OUT from inside the DAW track and get them into the Fantom Sequencer itself? The idea being that instead of recording manually the drums on the Fantom sequencer (which is where i will always start to create loops and songs), is it possible to get that midi from the Computer or Daw track and copy it or record it into the Fantom sequencer itself. Cheers Appreciate your help and time

    • @contemporarysynth
      @contemporarysynth 9 місяців тому

      Hi - you sure can! You can record them in real time (as MIDI or as audio) or load them as a file (again, as MIDI or audio). You can record multiple channels at a time, too, if you wanted to combine kits or other sounds. There are some buttons to learn on the keyboard, but it's all possible. I record a MIDI track from my DAW (Cakewalk) in Tutorial 11 as one example - ua-cam.com/video/rTu0a079zi0/v-deo.html. Good luck!
