#48 - A TOUGH Week at Our Renovation Project in Central Portugal
It's a tough week this week... but that's life! Michael continues to add character to the beams (with a little "help" from Becci and the dogs!). We also get a reminder of how vulnerable we are when it comes to surrounding fires when one starts up less than 1 km away from us. It's a close call that's made us realise how we need to do even more land clearing ahead of next summer.
About Us 🏚️👫🏼🐈🐕🐕
We're Michael & Becci (the humans) and Tilly (sassy English tortoiseshell cat), Alfie and Anoushka (Portuguese rescue dogs). After four years in Portugal and numerous dreams about renovating our own property, we've taken the plunge and are renovating a schist stone house and its outbuildings in Figueiró dos Vinhos. We're doing most of the work ourselves (or... Michael is!) and we'll be stepping back in time to create a character property with as many original features and antiques as possible.
Join us for the journey and don't forget to like, subscribe and comment! We love hearing from you 💛

#47 - Making the NEW Look OLD & Fixing the Beams in Place at Our Portugal Renovation Project
Переглядів 13 тис.14 днів тому
This week, Michael continues using the draw knife to give the new beams their quirky, aged effect. He also tries out some treatments to see which works best before fixing the beams into place. And, he has a look at some of the wood from the partition walls to see if they'll clean up as floorboards. About Us 🏚️👫🏼🐈🐕🐕 We're Michael & Becci (the humans) and Tilly (sassy English tortoiseshell cat), ...
#46 - Mastering Woodworking Skills - Using a Draw Knife on the New Joists at Our Renovation Project
Переглядів 9 тис.Місяць тому
This week, Michael masters a new woodworking skill by using a KIRSCHEN draw knife to help age the wood joists and add some character back into the room. What do you think? Watching the video back he was mortified at his first attempt on the off-cut ("You can't show that!") but practice makes perfect and I'm sure you'll agree the beams are starting to look much more authentic for the building! T...
ONE YEAR TIMELAPSE | Our Old Stone Home Renovation Project in Central Portugal
Переглядів 105 тис.Місяць тому
What a year...! Michael will often say he doesn’t feel like he’s done as much as he’d hoped over the last year, but I think this video proves otherwise! Since we moved here in July 2023, he’s spent hundreds of hours chipping render off walls, removing rotten wood and landscaping. And over the last month, he’s started to put things back. There’s still a LONG way to go but what a journey so far. ...

#44 - SUCCESS! The Wonky Doorway Dilemma is Finally Solved as We Restore Our Portuguese Stone Home
Переглядів 9 тис.Місяць тому
Don't you just love it when a plan comes together?! This week, all of the head-scratching, ruminating and cups of tea pay of as Michael installs the new lintel for the old wonky doorway. Using modern joists and antique wood, he creates a stunning feature for our Portuguese home. We may still have a long way to go but seeing the vision come together is a pretty wonderful thing! Переглядів 13 тис.2 місяці тому
After a weekend away in the Algarve visiting friends (hence the lack of video last week), we're back to catch you up on the latest beam-installing sagas. Michael finishes off the smaller room but hits another hurdle when it comes to replacing the door lintel. What's the best plan of attack? #42 - We Hit MORE Challenges with the Beams but Add Some Fabulous Antiques to the Outdoor Shed!
Переглядів 11 тис.2 місяці тому
Ah, renovations one step forward and two steps back! After a new delivery of beams, Michael gets to work installing them again, only to hit a few new problems and head-scratchers along the way. He finds some time to unwind with his usual love of tidying things up (!) and displaying our new antique finds. #41 - Pointing the Old Stone Walls & Adding Antiques to Our Shed
Переглядів 9 тис.2 місяці тому
The hot weather brings some cooler jobs for Michael, which include setting up the outdoor shed (Becci's office) with some of our favourite antiques and making a start on the external pointing. We've found a ready-made mix so give that a try and the results seem quite promising! What do you think of the colour? At the end of the week, we also get our new joist delivery, meaning we can get stuck ...

#35 - Salvaging as MUCH as Possible From Our Restoration Project in Portugal
Переглядів 9 тис.4 місяці тому
We're about to head off on a much-needed break with Becci's family, which means Michael's in full tidying mode! As well as working to the up-coming land-clearing deadline, he's tidying up all of the wood we've salvaged from the house so far. We're keen to use as much of this wood as possible, so we need to store it until we can re-use/re-purpose it. You'll also find him cleaning up an old stone...

You can get a wood cutting/grinding disk (metel disk with teeth on it) for your angle grinder. Works much faster than with the hand tool. The disk realy eats through wood and it gives a good finsh.

You know, a hand plane would do wonders for smoothing those timbers. It would make fairly short work of them. Of course, you would have a pile of shavings to sweep up, but the hand scraped timbers would look pretty amazing.

I am sorry for your loss. The fires are awful, I hope that you guys are safe now. You are using a draw knife, and that is nice and traditional and it looks great, but to be fair, if you would use an angle grinder with a 40 or 80 grid flapdisk you can get the same result that looks just as nice but much faster and with a lot less manual labor and physical energy. It will eat the wood like it is not even there. I have a relative cheap one, a corded medium size from a brand that is called Worx, and it has an adjustable RPM, and I used it quite a lot, and it is still working great. And I have the cheapest flapdisks from the action store, and they last a long time. And with a diamond disk you can even cut stone or concrete or metal to size with an angle grinder. I buy those diamond disks from the action store as well. Anyway, the result will be great no matter how you do it. And once it is done you will enjoy it for sure. Big 👍

So sorry for your family's loss and the worry or fear over the fires. Please both stay safe and hope Becci comes back well as is possible under the circumstances. If you are still struggling with the draw-knife, to make it a bit easier, maybe try to use it with a slicing motion from one side of the blade and slice it downward as you pull instead of just straight toward yourself. Hope that makes sense. Saying that, my draw-knife is a 200 yo one and might be different to a modern one. We love your videos and can't wait for each one to come out. We hope you see completion of at least one area soon to keep you going. 😊

Recently found your channel and catching up to all your amazing progress. You’ve done so much work for one person on the overall property look forward future videos. Have you considered using smaller longer pointing tool that will help push the line/mortar in? Also I’ve seen some videos tips from stone masonry, when lime semi try, use a kitchen scrub tool type of brush lightly pound it in the lime. That will push the lime in deeper while spread and help rid of uneven mortor. And just before it dries use a brush to go over it. That way you have to use metal brush to scrape off the lime leaving potential lines. Only issue with that is timing :) It wouldn’t matter for hidden wall, but something to consider for the exposed walls.
