We're Michael & Becci. After four years in Portugal and numerous dreams about renovating our own property, we've taken the plunge and are about to renovate a schist stone house and its outbuildings in Figueiró dos Vinhos. We're doing most of the work ourselves (or... Michael is!) and we'll be stepping back in time to create a character property with as many original features and antiques as possible.

What doesn't Michael do this week?! From bagging up rubble ready to take to our lovely friends @hotkeysportugal next week to creating a new raised bed to protect one of the olive tree's roots, it's all going! He even finds time to help Becci prune wisteria and install the wood burner, just in time for a Christmas film!

#53 - From Dawn 'til Dusk | Working on the Stone Outbuildings, Pruning Olive Trees & More Antiques
Переглядів 11 тис.Місяць тому
This week, it feels like there aren't enough hours in the day! Michael works from dawn 'til dusk emptying the outbuilding next to the cabin and doing his usual pottering around! For those who missed the last update, we're creating this new space for extra storage (we're currently paying for storage) using some of the wonky beams from the main house. And we're hoping to create extra living space...
#52 - Winter is Coming | Replacing Broken Roof Tiles and Pruning Olive Trees & Vines
Переглядів 14 тис.Місяць тому
As winter approaches, Michael gets to work fixing some old broken roof tiles and we get busy with some much-needed pruning of the olive trees and grapevines. We've managed to harvest a few olives in the process but the crop hasn't been great this year. Hopefully, a good prune will help this in the coming years, though! Finally, Michael also begins to empty out the barn nextdoor to the cabin in ...

This week, Michael makes the most of the autumn sunshine by cracking on with the pointing on the side wall. He also cleans up some fabulous antiques we've recently bought...one of which has a new home in our cabin. #50 - AGING New Pine Beams with Vinegar & Wire Wool for a Rustic Look at Our Renovation Project
Переглядів 8 тис.Місяць тому
It's an exciting week at our Portuguese renovation project because we start to experiment with how we can age and distress the new pine beams without using any chemicals or stains. Using a vinegar and wire wool mixture we get some great results! What do you think? Our UK friends may have also noticed that we made our TV cameo on Help! We Bought a Village on Channel 4. We were featured on Monday...
#49 - Making a RUSTIC Gate to Access Our Land in Central Portugal
Переглядів 12 тис.2 місяці тому
This week, Michael puts his woodworking skills to the test by building a gate for us to access the back terraces. It's rudimentary and rustic but works and looks good...just like most things around here! In between, he's back at his beams and is over halfway by the end of the week. #48 - A TOUGH Week at Our Renovation Project in Central Portugal
Переглядів 11 тис.2 місяці тому
It's a tough week this week... but that's life! Michael continues to add character to the beams (with a little "help" from Becci and the dogs!). We also get a reminder of how vulnerable we are when it comes to surrounding fires when one starts up less than 1 km away from us. It's a close call that's made us realise how we need to do even more land clearing ahead of next summer. About Us 🏚️👫🏼🐈🐕🐕...
#47 - Making the NEW Look OLD & Fixing the Beams in Place at Our Portugal Renovation Project
Переглядів 16 тис.3 місяці тому
This week, Michael continues using the draw knife to give the new beams their quirky, aged effect. He also tries out some treatments to see which works best before fixing the beams into place. And, he has a look at some of the wood from the partition walls to see if they'll clean up as floorboards. #46 - Mastering Woodworking Skills - Using a Draw Knife on the New Joists at Our Renovation Project
Переглядів 12 тис.3 місяці тому
This week, Michael masters a new woodworking skill by using a KIRSCHEN draw knife to help age the wood joists and add some character back into the room. What do you think? Watching the video back he was mortified at his first attempt on the off-cut ("You can't show that!") but practice makes perfect and I'm sure you'll agree the beams are starting to look much more authentic for the building! T...
ONE YEAR TIMELAPSE | Our Old Stone Home Renovation Project in Central Portugal
Переглядів 155 тис.3 місяці тому
What a year...! Michael will often say he doesn’t feel like he’s done as much as he’d hoped over the last year, but I think this video proves otherwise! Since we moved here in July 2023, he’s spent hundreds of hours chipping render off walls, removing rotten wood and landscaping. And over the last month, he’s started to put things back. There’s still a LONG way to go but what a journey so far. ...

when the joist go into the wall for the final time, do you seal the ends of the joist or seal the stone around the joist to keep any moisture from rotting the wood over time?
The have one of the most beautiful places in portugal, but needs so much work...
The eukaliptus trees will help you evoid flud. They will drink the water and stop it a little bit.dont take them down
Are you sure that next year your vines will have 🍇 grapes?? You have already, really destroyed the plants.
I'm sure we will! Had grapes this year and did a prune early winter last year too 👍🏻
You had to prune the vines on January, and dig them on February.
Oh really? People prune them before the new year here 🤞🏻
On aimerait voir beaucoup plus C' est du beau travail fait proprement. Les portugais sont des gens vaillants. Evelyne de France

Great job, as usual!

How damp is the cellar getting with all the rain?
It's not too bad at all!! 🤞🏻😊
What a lovely space you are creating! The wall is looking beautiful...artistic. Wonderful that so few cars zoom by. I enjoy the peaceful time with you. The raised bed looks fabulous. It's fun to see how much the animals love Michael...❣
Ah thank you so much 😊♥️
Thanks for your vid 😇💟💟💟 Love and bless you guys 💕 good work 👍😁
Thanks so much 😊 have a lovely weekend!!! ♥️♥️♥️
Check with a local arborist. Adding soil around a tree will slowly kill it as it changes the ability of the tree to breathe. Trees can handle at most an inch per year. Those trees might be different.
Ooo thank you! Hopefully it'll be ok as we have a lot of others that don't have their roots exposed but I'll keep an eye on it 😊

Thank you so much 😊 and you!!! ♥️♥️♥️
I could watch the pointing all day long, so relaxing.

Its coming along lovely! Filming can certainly make bagging up 4 tonnes of rubble look quick and easy, but lots of work there! Love your raised bed around the tree, should look fabulous in the spring :)

Beautiful pointing work, well done 😁
Thanks so much 😊
AMAZING WORK ✅✅✅✅✅✅
Thank you ♥️♥️♥️
Go on,You have done so well ! Really want to see more ! Cheers Chris
Ah thanks so much 😌
Love the little garden you made Michael. It must have been tricky preserving the moss as you relocated the stones. And, as always, its supurrvisor approved, so it must be good. Regards from Australia.
Thank you so much 😊 haha, yes... Always keeping an eye 🐈
U should get Clivias They will survive in your climate Back in SA we had similar climate Also plant avocados My favorite
It looks peaceful and tranquil even with every task in each episode.Great man great house!!
Ah, thank you!! 😊
Think the neighborhood appreciate your upliftment of the abode Superb workmanship workmanship
The mortar you are using for the stone walls looks good. If I understand it, the product comes pre-mixed with sand, just add water. I think you said it's more expensive but saves a lot of time. Based on results, it appears worth it, though it's your decision. Keep up the mortaring sections and any year now you will be done 🙂. Good luck.
Yes that's right 😊 so we don't have to worry about matching the colour etc. too! Been quite impressed with it so will definitely stick with it. Thank you 😍
Love how you skip from one job to the other keeps the interest and stops you getting bored, your garden is certainly getting there xx
Ah thank you so much 😊 xx
