Solid workout and review. Subscribed, keep up the good work! 👍🏻
Just came across your channel and great reviews. I'm also doing the Barcelona marathon in March (my first)
Thanks@@buntyboomboom2978 wish you the best of luck with your prep and the big day. It looks like a nice race and improved from recent years (flatter). Say hello if you see me 😃
Location?
Thanks@@catsniffer7645 it's at in harajuku, Tokyo. For the the Asics store. 🙂
I really like the Boston 12s, it gets a little softer after a while but its a bit polarizing and not for everyone.. Agree that despite the name its for a half marathon distance or less. I can't wait for the Boston 13, hopefully its coming out in March or April.
@@Kaisersozze thanks for your thoughts ! They seem to be getting better with each run, so needs breaking in a bit, or Im needing to adjust to them a bit 🙂 Glad I them though
Ive always wondered why you do your warm up several miles away then drive to the start of the session? I've never come across that before.
@@tworunningbrooms well spotted TRB 😃 It's just to make sure I "shake out" the system at home. The facilities are not open so early in the morning on the quayside 😂 always like to play it safe. Even when I'm a bit later it's become routine now. There's still a bit of warming up on the quayside too though
Matt, great job to ramp back up to 33 km! Thanks for the Boston 12 review and agree that it makes sense to be careful for longer workouts. Regarding the weather, it's good mental training to get out there when it's not ideal.
@@RunFreeandStrong yeah and it's actually really nice if it's not icy wind 🥶 but definitely a good day of running 😄
By coincidence I did similar part of this training - on Thursday 2nd Jan I did 2x3,2km @4:15/km. Strange distance as this is based on Jack Daniels - he uses miles (it's 2x2miles) :) But I'm not doing such long runs yet - 20-25km at most, closer to 20km rather. I will have 30km in mountains this weekend (a race, not a training), I wonder how it will work out as since Valencia I'm not running long distances :)
@@LeszekDeska I'm sure it work out fine, you have a great coach and alot of motivation/experience. Great we are doing similar workouts 😃
I've got a pair of these but they do hurt the inside of my right knee. I like the Hoka Mach 6 for a daily trainer and Saucony Endorpin Speed for races.
@@deansummerton2577 similar thoughts to me then 😂 That's a good rotation of shoes there too !
Nice one Matt. I got the Vaporfly 3 on a deal from Sports Direct. Worn them once so far. I might go for the adidas(pro 3s) for the marathon. A fair few options now so will see how the next few months go.
@@kennyosborne5835 yeah Kenny, so many options out there. I'm going to give these boston12s a bit more work 😃
Nice splits 💪
@@PatrickStar_24 thanks Patrick 😃 The workout went really well for the first one but more to come. How's was your run this weekend (if you did) ?
@@RunThePlanet The weather was too bad so I just took the week off to recover. I'm still early in the build up. 20 weeks out. Pick it back up tomorrow though.
Good workout Matt. You're in good shape to start the block. I have no races coming up but will hopefully get something in the books before Manchester.
@@kennyosborne5835 cheers Kenny, yes would good too see you do something before MCR, although with all those hyper park runs performances maybe that's enough 😃
Good work. You're due some good fortune in the marathon this year.
@@tworunningbrooms Yeah thanks 😃 and I'm planning some cooler marathons too
Nice video Matt. What’s your marathon PB?
Thanks Grado 😃 3hr22, how about yours ?
I wanted to follow you on the tracking for Valencia but i didn't know your surname or bib. I trained similar to you for Amsterdam and had a disappointing result. Next up for me is Newport in Wales. Once again 3.10 is my target time.
@@stevierunner thanks Steve, and sorry for that, I had put my bib out the day before I think. Li, but if you searched by Matthew you'd have got the list. Anyway, it was a bit of a disaster 😂 so you didn't miss much. Excellent choice with the Newport marathon, and good luck, I've heard its flat and fast, you'll do great 😃 and in early April a good chance it'll be a bit cooler
Awesome effort brother. Well done.
@@rundreamachieve thank you thank you 😃 Looking forward to next workout adventure
Great video, Matt! Thanks for sharing the new things you're trying out for Barcelona. Doing 16 reps is tough. And Kipchoge does 20 or 25 lol. Wow I didn't realize your 10K is coming up in 2 weeks. Excited to see you go for sub 40.
@@RunFreeandStrong thanks Reto 😃 well if Kip can do 25 so can we 😂 one day. I think I'll stop at 20. 10x800 is much easier than 20x400, strange 🤔
@@RunThePlanet Yes you can!!! July 2023, I ran 20 x 400 in mid-90's with last one in 85 and with 90 sec recovery. It's brutal physically and mentally. Will build back up again and give it a go in a few months.
Well done Matt. My next race is the Brass Monkey which is two weeks from tomorrow. Looking forward to it.
@@deansummerton2577 😲😲 Brass Monkey, all the best - good luck 🤞🤞 I'll be at the Newcastle 10k the day before
Just did the same session today at our track in Piaseczno and I had exactly the same average pace 3:05/800m :) only it was one month after marathon, not so shortly afterwards like you did. I have almost 22 weeks till next marathon - will probably do some short speed-improving training block first and then move on to marathon one. Keep posting your progress Matt (maybe I'll dig out my gopro and record something too ;) ).
@@LeszekDeska great to hear Leszek 😃 amazing same times ! Yes, Do a bit with the GoPro 😃 will be motivating to see you workouts from time to time. I'll keep updating my progress, no problem. Happy New Year !!
Loved this mate! Really appreciate the time and effort you put in throughout the year. I've really enjoyed following the channel for another year. You've achieved lots this year and learned so much to take into 2025. Your hard work and consistency will pay off! I'm hoping for a 4.15 Marathon this year and a sub 23 Parkrun. That would be brilliant for me.
@@deansummerton2577 thanks for your kind words Dean 😀 I wish you the best of luck with your goals then, hope you achieve it. My best parkrun is about 28 minutes (only ever done 1, Drudge Bay) Let's just keep pushing ourselves and see where we end up !
Ambitious goals and based on following you for several years, I think these are achievable in 2025. Excited to see this next chapter unfold and to cheer you on. Let's go, Matt!
@@RunFreeandStrong thanks Reto 😃 sometimes we need to just go for it, and aim for the sky 😁 overreaching a little maybe but I'm willing to give it a go.
My review from 2024: Made good progress and PBs in all distances except HM. 2025: Sub 2:40 Marathon Sub 75 HM Sub 33:30 10K Sub 16 5K (if I get the chance) Goals in order or priority. I really want you to get the sub 3 next year Matt. Keep going. Special year ahead!
@@kennyosborne5835 thanks Kenny, I'll give it my best. Those goals of yours are fast but definitely within your grasp from what I have seen you achieve this year gone and before (remember that first Edinburgh marathon, comfortably sub3), go get it 😃😃
You had quite good results for 10km and half, for full marathon it was worse - but I'm not sure if hydration should be blamed... In Valencia it was simply too hot to run a good race, at least for me and I saw a lot of people on our level bonking... All the best for 2025 - I will have similar goals, I think you should try to limit your expectations for full marathon time, going down from 3:22 to 3:00 requires more time I guess... For me 2024 was really good (I'm only disappointed with Valencia) but I did 19:18 for 5K, 39:39 for 10K, 1:29:55 half and 3:17:16 in Hamburg marathon this year - really good result for me. Will try to achieve similar times as you listed, maybe my accents will be placed bit differently. Most important is full marathon but I aim at 3:10 in best case scenario. For shorter distances just to improve a bit from this year. Will keep an eye on your channel just in case if we start again in the same race ;) Happy New Year!
@@LeszekDeska Good to hear from you Leszek, seems such along time we were at Valencia 😃 Agree with you maybe I'm a bit too ambitious for 3hrs but if I shoot for that maybe I'll get the 3:10 (go out at 4:15 pace for the first 32k then manage the cramp to the end 😂 ) Wish you all the best with 2025 too and yes it would be good if I see you at a race again next year. Your times in 2024 were great, happy new year too !
Great goal and looking forward to following your journey! Keep pushing.
Thanks Michael, yeah it's one big continuous year on year push isn't it 😂 why we do it to ourselves I'm not so sure 😁 good luck with your goals too if your aiming for something 😃
Sub18 5k, sub38:30 10k, sub1:26 half and finish a marathon without cramping for 2025 😂 I think 2024 went pretty well for you. Definitely sub40min in you just didn't fit into the schedule
@@timothytrewin All that sounds great Tim 😃😃 no way I could hang with you or want to hang with for the 5k and 10k 😂😂 that's fast ! Maybe I trundle in just behind you in the half. Yeah I'd like a sub40 but like the 5k and the half it's all second fiddle to the marathon for me, but I think 40 should be doable. Likewise a no cramping marathon is easily doable if your not chasing time 😂 I know how you feel
Hello am Raza and I am thumbnail expert and I think the only thing lacking in this video and that is thumbnail so if you want I can better and eye-catching thumbnails for you
@@MuneebRaza-u8m thank you Raza, maybe I'll update the thumbnail then, appreciate you dropping your opinion 😀 what application/software do you use for creating thumbnails ?
@RunThePlanet send me your WhatsApp contact I tell you details
Race in January. Brass Monkey?
@@tworunningbrooms that's a good guess but I'm trying to be a bit economical too with it. A bit closer to home for the next one 😉 Let's see if I can do a race a month in 2025
Barcelona was one of my guesses!(I thought there was an outside chance it might be Tokyo due to your regularish Japanese adventures) You'll need to get right back to it as March will be here before you know it but I'm sure you'll be fine. Have a very merry Christmas when it comes!
@@kennyosborne5835 merry Christmas Kenny🎄yes good guess, you always pretty much guess my races. I wonder if you can guess my winter marathon... (I definitely haven't picked it yet 😂 ) But lets leave that till after Barcelona.
@ Frankfurt is pretty good as you can get cheap accommodation 700m from the start line. I’m signed up for Berlin next year. You should get one that’s easy to get to etc to give yourself the best chance to perform.
@@kennyosborne5835 yeah makes sense, didn't really know about Frankfurt marathon until you mentioned. Maybe I'll give it a go one day
Hi Matt, great fitness test and validation that your repeats are 9s faster than after Manchester. You should be able to get well under 3:00 per rep in time for Barcelona (excellent choice!). Look forward to any training tweaks that you'll make. Merry Christmas!
@@RunFreeandStrong Merry Christmas to you too Reto 😃😃 Yeah I'm just running now and still thinking about the tweaks. Christmas is here already, where did that come from 😲 😲 🎁
Really enjoyed this one Matt. Was nice to see the Mrs feature more too.
@@kirstycollins945 thanks Kirsty 😃 that Barcelo breakfast was great, you two should try it. yeah she helped out alot this trip best supporter award to wife !!
Matt, thanks for sharing your week leading up to the race. Glad I was watching while eating my dinner, otherwise all the delicious food in the video would've made me hungry. Really cool tour around the city as well. The expo looked fantastic especially the NB displays.
@@RunFreeandStrong thanks Reto, the expo was good, probably the biggest one I've been too after Tokyo. Just a bit pricy for the NB stuff 😂 otherwise would have loved the VLC jacket.
Bringing the rice cooker, haha awesome!
@@TheWu yeah 😂😂 spent forever researching the right one. Want something compact, my normal ones too big. This one just £30, does the job. Considering that, still cant believe the race went wrong 😂😂
Was a decent length this one 😅 i watch it on intervals 😆 seemed like a good race week prep man. Im the same ive has the same pair of sunglasses for 9yrs 😆 need a new pair too.
@@timothytrewin thanks Tim 😃 yeah sorry they are not all this long. I'm sure some will turn off or skip bits 😂 I prefer to make 10-15 minute vids generally, but these rare ones covering a long period are rare for me, fair bit of work.
@RunThePlanet I think it's great to have a mix of length mine are generally 10-15 I think but yowana does like 50min+ every vid and I think it's good you did it this long to document and people can watch as much as they want 👍. Hope the recovery is going well
Great insight into your build up and carb load. I think I have a kitchen where I’m staying in Manchester so I can do all my own food. I might take microwaveable rice and pasta with me to keep things easy.
That's ideal 🤌 good luck with Manchester! I wanted to run that but have a wedding on that weekend 🥺
@@kennyosborne5835 thanks Kenny 😃 Always nice to be able to prepare your meals before race day isn't it. What time are you going for manchester ?
@@RunThePlanet I really want a sub 2:40. That’s the new sub 3 to me. I failed twice so far though.
@kennyosborne5835 third time lucky 🥉 🤞🤞
We learn from every race mate and come back stronger 💪. I was wondering if you think it could have been a case of over training or even peaking too early in the block? I think you also seem to touch on 5k pace and faster in your 800 reps and high volume for that session not sure how much extra id do of that each week. But eitherway you put in the work and just didnt happen on race day, but you gave it a good go 💪 nice work bro
Thanks @@timothytrewin appreciate you sticking through that long one 😃 last year after valencia 2023 I decided I only to do 2024 if I could do it with no stone unturned. In the training and prep I feel I did that, if you care to see the next vid tmrw (not pushing it) you will see my full week in Valencia, and in the moment I feel I did all that I could pactically do. But as you say we learn from every race, even 10 or 20 maras in 😂 I see some mistakes now and decision could have been made differently 😃 Through the whole block I felt good and better than any block before, energy wise, performance, mentally. But the biggest block I've done, maybe I was overtrained and peaked early.
@RunThePlanet sounds like there's a lot of positives to take from this block mate! Even to the point you know your body can handle the mileage and still recover 💪 but I think the addition of heat is still going to make it tough even if it's only 5°C warmer especially if you haven't had the chance to do many long runs in that temperature. I really notice a decrease in energy levels in the warmer weather. But I'm loving the 0°c in Scotland for training atm 🤣 I'll tune in for your next vid. Would love to have a chat about training on another app sometime 👍
@timothytrewin It's along one tmrws vid 😂 but it's also documenting it for me for next time. I'll go back to Valencia one day, once the self pressures off 😃
@RunThePlanet 😆 that's fine I'll check it out, get that watch time up for ya 😆. Yeah that's a good thing being able to document all this for our own reference later on. You consider running Edinburgh again? I probably will because it's near home but damn annoying along the coast 🤣
@@timothytrewin I'm thinking about it. it's great run I like it 😃 but when it's windy it's terrible 😂 If I go I'll probably play it safe and run the half again
Don't give up mate. I did Valencia too. It's a fab course and a great race. I also missed my goal time but I'm signed up again next year.
Thanks @@RunSensible yep there's no giving up here just yet. Well done to sign up next year. If you see my next video I did basically everything I could training and prep-wise. Just got caught out with hydration I think 🤔 Ran 2023 and 2024 and I want to remove the pressure and expense of this race so taking at least a year away from Valencia (let someone else have the place too) Im sure I'll go back one day though. Good luck for your 2025, let me know how it goes (long way away I know) 🤞
@RunThePlanet you did really well. The marathon is a hard race and a tough nut to crack. My PB is 3.08 but I did this year what you mentioned, I took all pressure away and I just trained to enjoyment. I was out of shape last year and getting back in 3hr11 shape was really uplifting even if it was slower than I had hoped. I had no pressure and I enjoyed every minuet of it. Keep going, it will happen for you.
When the pace starts drifting and people pass you it really sucks the life out of you. I had this feeling too. In March I'm wondering if it's Tokyo or Barcelona! I assume you're not in Manchester which is disappointing as I'll be there this year but I totally understand you much be bored of it by now!
@@kennyosborne5835 thanks Kenny, great to hear your thoughts and guesses of the next marathon 😃 won't be long now. Still catching up after been away and with a busy run up to Christmas. I like Manchester and it's a good course for me, holding my PB and 2 fastest times. I think you'll do something amazing, I might be there yet, who knows, but 3 years in a row already... 😉
Well done Matt. Another marathon done! Sounds like a break from Valencia is a good move. I enjoyed Amsterdam and Frankfurt, if you're looking for an alternative Autumn marathon. Both are nice and flat. You said some people have suggested focusing on shorter distance races a bit. I think this works well between marathon blocks. It makes for a nice change after all the high mileage and would likely make that 4:30/km pace feel far easier when you start training for your next marathon. That said, it's all just fun so do whatever training you enjoy the most!
Thanks @@paulvymeris425 Yeah, expect me to do a few shorter races too next year. I'm hoping to do more say maybe 1 a month, but I really like the marathon training over the others. More to come and 2025 here we go 😁😁
I snagged a massive PB 19 mins 3:19:16 My block started 16 weeks but it really started from March when I cleaned up my diet significantly and lost atleast 15kg or more. This felt running a bit "easier" with high milage for me in the block and peaking at 110km for 3 weeks. Also included gym work in there atleast once a week with leg day the main focus and 15 mins bike spin before the workout. Since then I PB in the Half in May and in Valencia, I really think that by cleaning up my diet and stregth training made the difference. I can't wait for what's next! You'll get it next time, Matt!
@@NeillyVille thanks Neilly, that's amazing, so many good points in there and great to hear your success. It won't be too long before the cats out the bag 😃 Ill do my very best for the next one !
Well done mate. Course PB in tough conditions is still a very decent result! Looking forward to seeing what's to come!
@@itsonandy yeah thanks Andy, got to be happy with it overall. Definitely happy with my effort in the race. At some point you must have flown past me 😃
