That is the enjoyment of books. I absolutely enjoyed Against the Day. When I finished the book, I hand wrote a note to Mr,. Pynchon, care of the publisher, to thank him for that book, and how much I enjoyed it. I have never done that, before or again, for anyone else. I have no doubt the letter was never received by the author, but I did not care, It was something I felt was needed to be done. On a side note, I accepted the challenge of reading Marcel Proust In Search of Lost Time. Actually, I have enjoyed the first book more than I thought I would.

Grade school kids can't go to NC-17 movies. Are those banned movies? Parents can take their kids to an R-rated movie, and they can get any of these books for any of their kids. The term "banned" has been broadened ridiculously for political reasons to falsely harken back to actual banned books that were available to no one. The Gender Queer book describes and has drawings of kids performing oral sex on each other. If you want your grade-school kid to read it it's perfectly legal to get it for them -- the kid can even go online themselves and get it. But there are parents who don't want their kid reading it in grade school and don't want it available in the school library. I guess you think we're on the verge of putting blacks back into slavery, too. A bit too over-dramatic since we're talking about school kids libraries.

The food writer's dilemma: how to describe something as delicious without constantly using the word "delicious." Maybe it's like writing horror--having to describe fear without using the word "afraid," or writing a zombie story without ever using the "zombie." Greg, I forgot to ask you.... on your Kindle do you have any difficulties with loading and reading large (Beefy) books? For some reason my Kindle, while by no means full to capacity, has developed an aversion to large books. As an example I acquired Delphi Complete Charles Dickens from Amazon and have found on several occasions it freezes up and I must reboot. Even then it wont show the index for the contents. I have deleated and reinstalled it many times. This also occured with other hefty Beefcakes. Dickens volumes are chunky or beefy coming in at over 3,000 pages. Amazon have offered no solution. Thanks Greg!

    • @anotherbibliophilereads

I have a few Delphi Kindle editions. Not Dickens. I don’t recall having the Kindle freeze up on those, but it does happen with other books from time to time. I guessing that the complete Dickens is HUGE so maybe that’s the difference.

Emile Zola is an author I consider obscure, because I never hear him mentioned anywhere. I love what I've read of his. I have probably the most unique discovery of Zola you possibly could have: In a documentary about Vincent Van Gogh, the actor playing him spoke directly to the viewer and said "I'm reading Emile Zola these days. Everybody should read him. Zola is good for the soul." And I dunno about all that, but Therese Raquin is still on my mind a decade later.

Hiroshima on the other hand is still fresh in my mind and I am glad I read it, it had a really strong impact on me, only comparable to that of the very different experience of watching 'Come and See'. Greg, thanks for doing this video. You have an incredible collection here. I have only recently started collecting these. What treasures. I have some of the volumes of American poetry, 19th and 20th century. I have also been buying the Ursula K. LeGuin volumes. I think they have 6 or 7 volumes of her works now. Every time I check, it seems like a new one has been added. I'm looking to get Faulkner and Steinbeck next. This is a magnificent collection, Greg. Happy Holidays, my friend. I'm so glad to have met you this year.
