Another Bibliophile Reads
United States
Приєднався 3 тра 2021
Welcome to my channel. I’m a bibliophile who wants to talk about books. I like print, digital, and audiobooks. It’s going to be a mixed bag of books and topics because I’m a broad reader, rarely focusing on one category or genre for any length of time. There should be a healthy mix of literature, genre, and non-fiction.

Gwen in Green finally showed up at the library, too late for your readathon or the green bingo square in GarbAugust, but I want to read it anyway! Looking forward to 'Salem's Lot 😀
I have not read the Back Dalhia but aas a Guns n Roses fan, I am following your opinion and gonna read this one. Great tag Greg!!!
It is such an epic crime novel.
❤ Proust 🇫🇷
I want to read more sci-fi so I am going to take a look at quite a few of these, I already had Hyperion and Roadside Picnic on my list to get to, Hyperion especially I have heard really good things about. Thanks for sharing bud
Hyperion definitely deserves its excellent reputation.
Well played, sir! Very enjoyable video.
Yayyy, thanks for doing my tag even though you’ve been holding off on doing tags lately ❤🎉
Silly UA-cam deleted my message 🥴 Let’s do this again 🙂 You made this tag so much fun Greg . You had me laughing and your reactions. I literally smiled when I saw the book Dead Inside ! I don’t think anyone would pick that book to read lol 😂 I don’t blame them ether ! Ha!
@@badrad9226 I think that book is mine until my estate sells it off after I’m gone .😂 We did a similar thing with the Secret World of the Sex Witches. That made it to few different places. Let’s pick another and see where it goes. Maybe something not so extreme this time.
@@anotherbibliophilereads I’m down for that idea Greg . Geek Love ! No just kidding but we can definitely pick a good one for everyone to have a good time with the book. . I feel bad for anyone that ends up picking it out from your bookshelf lol and it’s signed too ! Dead Inside 😬
Can you tell us a few more details regarding the last two works especially the Chinese editions? Titles, Publisher,?
All these books are published by Foreign Language Press. They are currently available from Amazon, but I picked some some used or other online dealers for a little less . A Dream of Red Mansions by Cao Xueqin, 2553 pages in four volumes ($39.95) Journey to the West by Wu Cheng'en, 2346 pages in four volumes ($49.95) Three Kingdoms attributed to Leo Guanzhong, 3339 pages in four volumes ($44.94) Outlaws of the Marsh by Shi Nai'an and Leo Guanzhong, 2149 pages in four volumes ($34.99)
Great responses to the tag Greg! Dead Inside does sound truly revolting, think I will give that a skip. Love The Masque of the Read Death, great Poe story.
Love “The Mask of the Red Death”
I really love Jude the Obscure too. I don’t think I knew you weren’t really doing tags anymore these days. I just tagged you again on a tag that I posted today! 🙄 Sorry. No pressure…😉
@@BookChatWithPat8668 I’ll still do tags now and then. Just not every Tuesday.
@@anotherbibliophilereads Got it.
Ellroy is a dark writer. He's dealing with some demons and exorcizes them through writing. The Black Dahlia is one of his best.
@@MysteryandMayhem-gr7nn Totally agree.
The Shrinking Man blew me away when I first read it, especially the ending. I still wonder what the other world (microcosm) would be like. Matheson is one of my all-time favorites. His son, Richard Christian Matheson, has done some nice work in short fiction, too. Matheson was a giant. He broke a lot of new ground. Lem did, too. And they both wrote, by today's bloated standards, such small novels (in size only), but ones that packed such huge punches. Solaris's structure is so deceptively simple, yet the premise is staggering.
Jo Walton’s book What Makes This Book So Great? has some of the best stuff ever written about the distinct pleasures of rereading. And a lot about many sf and some fantasy books - you should check it out :) You have some great picks there. They all seem like books with something to give the re-reader. There’ll be a bunch of rereading for me in the next year, too. I turin 59 next week, and plan to really mostly work by women and non-binary authors, and more than my usual by authors of color and works in translation, while continuing to really like or love most of what I read. Off to a good start!
I have heard of Jo Walton before but haven’t read her. I think I have an ebook of Farthing somewhere. It was probably a freebie that I picked up and never got around to. Anyway, I’m turning 60 at the end of this month, and that might be part of wanting to reread so much.
Now I have that Pink Floyd song stuck in my head… 😂
@@NicolesBookishNook 😈
I read The Terror by Dan Simmons. Several people have suggested reading Hyperion, thanks for the snippet and sounds interesting 👍
Great video Greg. Shrinking Man is one of my all time favourites. Roadside Picnic is a fantastic book. Hyperion is worth a reread too, that's a deserved classic. Looking forward to your comments on rereading them.
Well, I must admit to not being a SciFi reader. I tried it about 3 times but the last one you reviewed is tempting me. Darn you Greg (shaking my fist and giggling)
@@LeeKempter Try your local library. They might have it.
Some gems on here!
I've read the _Hyperion_ series and loved it; read some PKD (but not the one you mentioned); would like to read more Sci-fi in the future. (No Clarke or Asimov?)
@@bighardbooks770 I reread some Clarke and Asimov last year so they didn’t get added to this list.
What a great list. As you know, I'm new to the genre, so I think I may take some of these as suggestions from you. Thank you! A lot of these sound really terrific!
@@BookChatWithPat8668 I think Hyperion would be a good choice for you. Its Canterbury Tales style will give you multiple different kinds of storytelling.
@@anotherbibliophilereads yes!! That definitely sounds appealing! Thanks, Greg!
Great re reading plan. I don't think I've read any of these even once. Did you ever see the movie Stalker? Supposedly based on Roadside Picnic but your description sounds like a totally different story.
@@JamesRuchala Yes, Stalker is based on the book, but I never saw it. There is a lot I left out describing the book in such a short time.
I've read a few of these, but the ones I'd most like to reread are Solaris and Hyperion. Whenever I listen to people talk about those two books, I feel like I've forgotten so much of them, or that I didn't really understand them to begin with. I've been thinking about rereading Peter Watts' Blindsight, I've really wanted to revisit the idea of philosophical zombies lately and I feel like so much of that book was lost on me when I first read it
@@MustReadMore I reread Blindsight about two years ago. Excellent book.
Good video. I'm a Goodreads addict. I'd never heard of Library Thing, but I'll give it a look. I have a little room in my life for yet another addiction.
I hope you find it useful.
My "mileage varied"; will seek out the Borges story. Great review.
It’s one of my favorite short stories.
Loved this. Am really getting cross about book banning now. Great video 😊
I must give some context for Utah, not as an excuse, but as a memory. When I was at BYU, swearing once could make you lose your on campus job. There's probably no way ACOTAR would be in the campus library. Most of the romances there were Amish romances. There were complaints about art professors showing corn when they showed classical statues.
Great video. I really liked Blankets when I Red it a couple of years ago. I was going to cover it in a video with a few other banned graphic novels.
I enjoyed the Maas book. Not sure I’d continue with the series though 😆 no way should it be banned in a public school however. I read Oryx and Crake years ago and can’t remember what would cause it to be banned. I think I’ll read it again. In enjoy Atwood books. I think I’ll read Animal Farm next, I think that one gets banned all the time 🙄
Great reviews Greg! I enjoyed ACOTAR, darker and grittier then expected. Naughty, wicked teenagers thinking about sex, just wow, so totally unacceptable! 😂
Love the video and love the fashion!!!! Read Banned Books! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Great video!
So disheartening that in the "land of the free and home of the brave" books are banned... But I see the revolutionary spirit lives on in you splendid book rebels, which restores some hope. Well done!
Greg getting feisty, must be feeling better. Love the Pink Floyd start, the other line of course is, We don't need no thought control, which is another way of saying book bans. Appreciate the heads up about Sarah J Maas - killing a wolf, I'm out - romance 🤮definitely not my kind of read, so thank you for the time saver. Do I think the book should be banned - absolutely not. - many people would enjoy that story and they should have the option to read it. Not for me does not mean, not for anybody. But Utah is not just banning the books you mentioned, according to an article I came across - June 2023 they have also removed Bibles from schools, go figure. Honestly the more I have looked into this issue over the year, the more irritated I become and truly wonder if Orwell was on to something.
I may be mistaken, but I believe the reason the Bible was banned in Utah was because it was an attempt by a man to make a point about being against banning books. Apparently the message didn’t get through because they went ahead and banned all the books, including the Bible, anyway. Now more bans. Crazy and definitely Orwellian. 🫣
Love the title of this video, Greg! And it sounds like a great group. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. I really want to read Oryx and Crake. Blankets is a beautifully illustrated graphic novel - I read it years ago when I was first exploring graphic novels. It's an older book so seems like an odd choice to ban at this point among 13 books. Same with Forever, which I read as a teen (a very long time ago!!), though it is about a first sexual relationship. It's just crazy that all this book banning is going on now (it's always been there but seems more prominent now). Great video!
@@SueJacksonDE Someday I’ll talk about the erotica book I picked up when I was 14 or 15. These book banning folk haven’t read anything even close to what I found.
@@anotherbibliophilereads ha ha ha!! I hear you - when I was abut 13, I found my mom's copy of Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Sex But Were Afriad to Ask - quite an education!!
Teenagers… thinking about sex? 😮 I wonder what I was doing then, back in my teenage years? 😳
@@davidnovakreadspoetry I played D&D and was pretty much ignored by the girls.
Terrific video, Greg!
Awesome video! 👍🏻👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I might read an Emily Bronte poem for next Poetry Thursday and Victober.
@@jimsbooksreadingandstuff Go for it!
Hi Greg. You’ve touched on a subject here that I have struggled with. I’ve tried Storygraph but find it clunky to use. Library Thing looks good but…….what I worry about most is the possibility of these online sites and apps shutting down or failing. I’m afraid I’d lose all my data. Is this something you’ve taken into consideration?
I was looking around on LibraryThing and I really really like it! I'll probably use it alongside Goodreads just because I've been using Goodreads so long it's hard to give up... but LibraryThing is sooo much easier to use than Storygraph, which is why I stopped using that one. LibraryThing definitely feels like more of a personal catalogue, which I like!
It is definitely designed for you to create and customize your own library. If I’m not mistaken, you control the data for each of your books in your library and it can be different for every one, but for Goodreads or StoryGraph all books share the exact same data for each book with everyone.
Hi Greg, new to your channel and enjoyed! I was on GoodReads but didn't get on with it at all. I really don't like the oneupmanship of 'I have read more than you' on their. Thank you so much for introducing me to LibraryThing. It does sound much more up my street. Ollie
It’s totally different from Goodreads or StoryGraph. It’s mostly a way to catalog and organize your books, ebooks, and audiobooks. I think you can do music too but I have not tried that feature. I hope you like it.
Oh bugger, I had to sleep this time. I usually catch this one, but missed the one with Dave in it!!! Argh!
Thanks again, guys! Had a blast, as usual!
@@BookBlather It was great having you on.
