The Great Shift from DC to AC Locomotives.
#Trains #Railroads (4/26/24)
How the turntables turn, who could have guessed that the once hated Dash 9 would one day become a prized catch for train enthusiasts? Thousands of these units used to plague the Class I railroads, appearing in every consist imaginable and taking the limelight from the "good" (lower performer yet cooler looking) locomotives. But now, in 2024, and seeing these locomotives is practically a rarity. I fortunately got hit with a stroke of luck alongside @iceclimberGD and saw a higher volume of these units than I've seen in a minute, but I was more than aware that this was not the norm. The disappearance of these units is part of a wider trend taking over North American railroads, and today I'll get to explain to you exactly what that is and why it's happening. :)

The Great Chase of the Georgia Central Railroad.

#Trains #Railroads (4/26/24) The time has finally come for me to finally get this out of my hard drive. After months of seeing clips of old NS standard cabs getting sent to this line and having "insider connections" encouraging me to visit, I at last made the trip with @iceclimberGD down to south Georgia to witness the Georgia Central Railroad in its glory. And of course, with it being a shortl...

#Trains #Railroads (4/8/24) It's not everyday where you get to go trackside and have the chance to see the sun get blocked out in live time. So, when such a day happened to cross my path, I decided to take the opportunity, conveniently while there were some already good finds to be caught out on the rails. I'll be honest in saying that the effects of this eclipse, besides some shadows that I di...

#Trains #Railroads (3/30/24) I'm sure we're all aware of the CSX railroad. Some of us love it, some of us are indifferent to it, and some of us detest their heritage units. Regardless of what your opinion of the railroad may be, there's no denying that the CSX lore is deep. Like every other Class I of today, it's history dates back hundreds of years and plenty of different railroads and mergers...

#Trains #Railroads (3/23/24) I got a special place in my heart for the Atlanta North End. It seems whenever I go there, there's always something cool or special running. Last time I visited these rails I witnessed the peak of what the North End could ever offer, seeing foreign heritage units and some really vintage leaders. However, now as I return with @ThatModelGuyGA, the action wasn't as ext...

#Trains #Railroads (3/15/24) Today has been an absolute movie. What was supposed to be a simple trip out by the rails seeking whatever was running quickly turned into an unexpected adventure of chasing the CSX Gainesville Midland Subdivision and seeing a BNSF SD70MAC lifted in the air as it got an axle replaced. And believe it or not, there was still more for us to see. Lots more. Knowing your ...

With a motor locked up on the rear axle, it would be temporarily out of service ...

#Trains #Railroads (3/15/24) How often does one go trackside on Norfolk Southern territory to see a random BNSF H2 SD70MAC sitting in a siding? Or see this locomotive get lifted in the air right next to the mainline and have an axle replaced? Alas this was no normal day, and me and the gang would find ourselves in a very unplanned setting seeing something we won't be seeing for a very long time...

Why Model Trains Are MID.

#Trains #Railroads (3/9/24) DISCLAIMER: don't take this seriously. It's not everyday I find myself filming model trains, but today was a unique exception. I decided to tag along with a few close friends of mine to visit a local model train show, seeing many friendly people, unique models, and some pretty well-done layouts. However, despite the details and diversity surrounding me, I still will ...

Hi loco!
How you doing big bro?
@ good sadly I missed my orange chicken dude CN 3023 on B705 at Depew, NY
Big bro?? What do you even mean? He’s not your actual brother.
@@RAtheGoodRailfanner_888 we know that I’m in Cleveland making me higher up in elevation than him
Some of the more recent C6Ms were rebuilt from ex-leaser AC44s, and some from old BNSF Dash 9s. They've been also buying used locomotives to rebuild into C6Ms. I'm used to seeing the C6Ms when I go out, since they're now the prime units of the NS roster.
The fact that we hate Gevos now but they will get the dash 9 treatment when they are starting to get rare😭🤣💀
the gevos mostly look the same while dash 9s came in different varieties
The fact that we hate Gevos now but they will get the dash 9 treatment when they are starting to get rare😭🤣💀
@@ThatYoungFarmerAndRailfan Literally, it’s all relative. SD40-2s used to be everywhere, I’m sure certain railfans hated seeing them, and now they’re a prized find.
Sd40s and other EMDs are common still.
What’s good hope you had a good week
I appreciate that man, hope you have a good upcoming week, Luke. :)
yap yap yap jk nice vid 😊
18:49 everytime that happens to me at a crossing and for some reason I use to think they were mean to just try to blow the horn in my ear ?
It is rare to get a horn salute from an ACE becuase. A engineer told me a few months back that everytime an ACE leads a train and takes on a steep hill, the screen monitor in front will freak out telling him that their is a wheel slip so the locomotive cuts of half of the power to the trucks so it can regain traction. And this is why ACEs are soooo slow going uphill and the engineer is rarely freindly.
Dash 9's are becoming extremely rare
Taught me something in 20 minutes that I've been searching months to understand. Thank you and great video!
Now you have to get as many ACES and DC GEVOS as possible becuase the ACES and tier 2s are being stored in the deadline at Shaffer's Crossing awaiting thier new engine batteries ! And it looks like it wont be for a fews years probably.
Trust me, I worked there over the summer, I saw it grow in live time. 😂
And this was kinda Alan Shaw and Mark George's fault. Becuase when Jim Squires was in charge he introduced the C6Ms but it really wasnt big about it for 2 - 4 years and he was going to severely decline PSR on his last day. But it was too late Alan Shaw activated PSR, PTC, and extended the C6M program. And as we all know Charles Moorman best NS president.
13:38 btw looking at the later ICCs aka later ACES. NS requested the FRA for all their SD70M-2S to be rebuilt into the newer ICCs or the later ACES !
17:33 UP is rebuilding their dash 9s too.
17:21 thats why they were boring kinda. But the yn2s are fun.
4:38 you should of never let that bother you.
4:10 for bnsf I never get bored of dash 9s and ns. I love them because Csx Gevos are actually kinda boring and worst than dash 9s honeslty) bnsf has the best Gevos.
4:03 formerly 2000.
The ac44c6ms will be rebuilt once there 30.
Love your content man. I’m lucky enough to actually operate these little things lol. The two I’ve run are the shuttle wagon commander and a railking rk330, which is another competitor in the market. The main big difference is that, at least between the rail king and the shuttle wagon, the railing lifts up on the coupler box hydraulically to gain some extra adhesion, since it weighs as much as a grape lol. The rail king is also powered primarily by its rail wheels, while the shuttle wagon uses its road wheels on the rail to gain traction. While the rail king can pull more than the shuttle wagon, the shuttle wagon is a lot more comfortable lol Keep up the awesome content🤟🤟🤟
I think you should do some history on the thourobred and horse head paint scheme
My backlog is too deep to try this anytime soon. 😂
Ayo loco :)
What’s up fam? :)
Yeah D9s are cool and all but it’s almost 2025 and we have yet to see 4014 or 2102 in their own video, how do you explain yourself???
You see…I got nothing. 😂😭
the cinematics are nice, you even taught us some physics too, great video.
You forgot to call the conductor horizontally challenged
My option on the dash 9 and im pretty sure most people can agree with me on this, I never hated the Dash 9, they were just common as hell to see on literally every train, over the time as they got rebuilt I started missing them more and more, and kinda startednto relize just how different in a way they look compared to like a C6M or GEVO, now my option of the C6M, I dont hate it either, the thing is NS is extended the lifes of such a well working and fan favorite locomotive, tye best thing is the rebuilds still have there old horns, bells, and engines, meaning we can still hear K5LAs, P5s P3s, ect and just like the dash 9s, when the AC44s eventually start disappearing where all gonna be scrambling to the tracks trying to get them, so dont hate on something that wont be there one day, took the D9s, SD70s ect for granted man :(
The Great Shift from DC to AC locomotives.
2:49 JUMPSCARE. Bout lost me with the motor explanations, really really good stuff tho
Bro wasn't expecting the cameo. 😂
I’ll say one thing. While I do hate the C6Ms, I’m glad that the Dash-9s have been rebuilt into them, rather than scrapped entirely. You can view as a new form of life for them. Fantastic Video as always Loco.
I once thought what would an AC44 look like if NS ordered them new back in the day......I now regret thinking that PS: C6M's have their own nickname according to my conductor friend known as "Sh*t 6M's"
So what I'm hearing is that you manifested this into reality and now I need to blame you.
@@LocoPro Gotta trade one evil for another ig 🤣💀

16:00 back end of 1071
Someone was paying close attention. ;)
@ lol! I got 1071 last year on BNSF H-STLTUL
I think for me the fact I have my favorite locomotives as models I’ve railfanned and been on running real trains in a display case fascinates me!
On a side note I think model railroading and railfanning go hand and hand!
Interesting Roanoke shots I must say good sir. Anyways thank u for helping me to understand how DC traction works
I was the opposite! I enjoyed the Dash 9s as a kid growing up in the early 2000s and still to this day enjoy them! I remember when they were brand new in primer color as well! The AC44C6Ms are wearing on me though! When I was a conductor for NS the new AC rebuilds were pretty noise in the cab and also vibrated really bad going up the hill!
Yeah, I've heard the early batches that were rebuilt in-house by NS were prone to very shaky cabs, but that has been fixed in the later batches.
@@LocoProanother thing to note that’s better with the rebuilds are the option to run DP lead! You couldn’t do that with NS Dash 9s! BNSF you could because they were running DPs 20 years ago before it was cool
@@drewharman1690 I was actually very surprised to learn that over this summer. I guess NS was pretty late to the DPU game and decided it wasn't worth making the Dash 9s DPU capable before they're rebuilt.
@ yep up until probably the last 10 years DP trains weren’t a thing really on the East Coast like it was out west! Sure you had your occasional ECP train and a few stack trains but that was it! Now everything is DPd! Even hopper trains lol
yo i know this video's about locomotives but that explanation of motors is the simplest and most understandable explanation i've ever heard
