Some of the more recent C6Ms were rebuilt from ex-leaser AC44s, and some from old BNSF Dash 9s. They've been also buying used locomotives to rebuild into C6Ms. I'm used to seeing the C6Ms when I go out, since they're now the prime units of the NS roster.
I’ll say one thing. While I do hate the C6Ms, I’m glad that the Dash-9s have been rebuilt into them, rather than scrapped entirely. You can view as a new form of life for them. Fantastic Video as always Loco.
@@ThatYoungFarmerAndRailfan Literally, it’s all relative. SD40-2s used to be everywhere, I’m sure certain railfans hated seeing them, and now they’re a prized find.
My option on the dash 9 and im pretty sure most people can agree with me on this, I never hated the Dash 9, they were just common as hell to see on literally every train, over the time as they got rebuilt I started missing them more and more, and kinda startednto relize just how different in a way they look compared to like a C6M or GEVO, now my option of the C6M, I dont hate it either, the thing is NS is extended the lifes of such a well working and fan favorite locomotive, tye best thing is the rebuilds still have there old horns, bells, and engines, meaning we can still hear K5LAs, P5s P3s, ect and just like the dash 9s, when the AC44s eventually start disappearing where all gonna be scrambling to the tracks trying to get them, so dont hate on something that wont be there one day, took the D9s, SD70s ect for granted man :(
The Dash 9s from the beginning will always be my favorite, especially the thoroughbreds. The one thing I hate about the c6m is the awful chunk taken out of the nose like a GEVO because it doesn't have a nose mounted headlight, like why couldn't you fill it in like a sd70ace.
@ditchpatcher The big square noses on the SDACU's block a bit of the view near the tracks, with the GEVO's that angle down immediately it allows you to see a little more. Same with some of those older CN units that have the "tear drop" window, it allows you to see more.
@@skorisdestiny Oh no I first meant that I don't like the GEVO cab because when you don't order one with a nose mounted headlight they have that rectangular hole in the center of the nose instead of it being flush like a dash 9 or es40dc
I was the opposite! I enjoyed the Dash 9s as a kid growing up in the early 2000s and still to this day enjoy them! I remember when they were brand new in primer color as well! The AC44C6Ms are wearing on me though! When I was a conductor for NS the new AC rebuilds were pretty noise in the cab and also vibrated really bad going up the hill!
@@LocoProanother thing to note that’s better with the rebuilds are the option to run DP lead! You couldn’t do that with NS Dash 9s! BNSF you could because they were running DPs 20 years ago before it was cool
@@drewharman1690 I was actually very surprised to learn that over this summer. I guess NS was pretty late to the DPU game and decided it wasn't worth making the Dash 9s DPU capable before they're rebuilt.
@ yep up until probably the last 10 years DP trains weren’t a thing really on the East Coast like it was out west! Sure you had your occasional ECP train and a few stack trains but that was it! Now everything is DPd! Even hopper trains lol

Now you have to get as many ACES and DC GEVOS as possible becuase the ACES and tier 2s are being stored in the deadline at Shaffer's Crossing awaiting thier new engine batteries ! And it looks like it wont be for a fews years probably.
And this was kinda Alan Shaw and Mark George's fault. Becuase when Jim Squires was in charge he introduced the C6Ms but it really wasnt big about it for 2 - 4 years and he was going to severely decline PSR on his last day. But it was too late Alan Shaw activated PSR, PTC, and extended the C6M program. And as we all know Charles Moorman best NS president.
4:10 for bnsf I never get bored of dash 9s and ns. I love them because Csx Gevos are actually kinda boring and worst than dash 9s honeslty) bnsf has the best Gevos.
I once thought what would an AC44 look like if NS ordered them new back in the day......I now regret thinking that PS: C6M's have their own nickname according to my conductor friend known as "Sh*t 6M's"
@ not the same engine number, different traction motor and electronic component inside the cab but other than that, its the same thing. I personally still call tehm dash9´s.
@ trucks all look the same and they are the same. Same interior, same brand of pneumatic components and same engines ( pretty much ) just like locomotive. My point is that there is no reason to foam on the DC version of the Dash 9 because of my second reply.

13:38 btw looking at the later ICCs aka later ACES. NS requested the FRA for all their SD70M-2S to be rebuilt into the newer ICCs or the later ACES !
Dash 9's are becoming extremely rare

Excellent stuff, my dude. Great premiere, and I love how you went into extensive detail about DC and AC. I never really given it too much thought.

Yeah, I've heard the early batches that were rebuilt in-house by NS were prone to very shaky cabs, but that has been fixed in the later batches.
