The great 'homage watch' debate ...
The word 'homage watch' fires up intense debate in watch collecting circles on a daily basis. It's an interesting topic in the watch world - at what point does a homage watch become unacceptable, or are all homage watches acceptable ... even those without any original design elements?
This is my two cents on the topic of homage watches, and that's all it is - just one guys opinion, nothing more and nothing less. Before it all kicks off, let's remember... they're just watches!!

How I regulate my watches (Seiko NH Series)
Переглядів 14 тис.День тому
I have had plenty of times with brand new watches where they just do not run very well out of the box and the accuracy really spoils that 'new watch feeling' - this San Martin being a great example. This can be very frustrating, so I wanted to show my current method to regulate watches. As I have said in the video, I am not a watch maker - this method works well for me on NH series movements. My BEST watch of 2024.

This has been a great year of watch releases and I have handled a lot of watches across the last 12 months - chronographs, GMT watches, quartz watches, automatics, affordable watches, microbrands, Swiss watches.... Now it's time to pick just one that has made the most impact on my year. This is my best watch of 2024. Reviews/First Impressions: Farer Portobello: ua-cam.com/video/PnqUOCWgPO0/v-de...

Great points I too love sub 40mm generally. I love citizen but they don’t make enough smaller watches. The few that I’ve had felt cheap. The Seiko 39mm SSC8 line feels like a premium watch. I do wish it had more lume and a 12 hour counter but love the case shape and size and I really liked the bracelet on this one too.

A suggestion: You try to aim for the perfect timing with the watch facing up, but in reality that's the position that the least likely to be when you wear it daily. From my experience I try to aim for the perfect time when the watch in a different position: you start from it pointing up, turn 45 degrees to left so it's at an angle and then turn half way towards you. Try to aim for perfect timing in this position and then compare how much time you lose/gain with daily wear.

Hydroconquest it the worst watch ever made. Awful clasp, too heavy, rough crown guards that will hurt your palms, it's designed by a committee (Explorer 12-6-9, really?, Tudorish hour hand (bleh), shrivelled markers), the bezel insert is stolen from Omega just so that Swatch Group can sell this shit as Seamaster for cheap people.

I've done home regulation on a variety of cheap watches, many with the 7s26 movement which is very similar to the NH movements. They can be very touchy, a movement of the lever that you can barely see may change by 1 minute per day. If you don't have the electronic instrument then proceed very slowly with adjustments.

That bracelet is shocking and seems not to fit the watch well. It looks like the wrong bracelet for such a price level watch. I have a prospex turtle and a higher level diver and both bracelets fit very tightly and securely.

I thought you were supposed to de magnetise the movement while it was running? I've only come across one movement that ran erratically, using the sensor on my phone and CPU-Z's app to access the sensors reading, I was able to see the movement had a wildly different reading to my other watches, so I bought a cheapo demag tool and tested it on a magnetised screwdriver, sorted. I followed instructional video for performing demag with my tool on an automatic movement, it was stipulated that it should be running. Checking after got a normal parameters magnetic sensor reading and the watch still keeps good time. That was several years ago and that's how I remember it, but eye witness testimony is notoriously unreliable so I'm asking, running or not and why so? Thanks really useful video for the lover of watches, great explanation of how it all works.

I had some extra money so I bought a black and white "Seaturtle" Luminox in 2022. I have it on right now. I like the design. I like that it is lightweight but also very robust (the case is carbonox not plastic). I like lightweight watches when I am at work. The lume is great. I like the overall look and it is very comfortable. I prefer this lume at night even if it will die after 12 years or whatever. I don't understand when people say there are quality issues. My luminox watches (quartz) are extremely accurate. The bezel on the Seaturtle is a bit loose for my taste. I paid $150 for this watch and I think it was worth it.

Good comments and techniques. I too found out the hard way that it's remarkably easy to slip and permanently damage that ultra delicate hairspring. Go slowly and deliberately and you'll be OK. I use my spring bar tool to push the regulating arms around, FWIW.

That's the thing with a lot of these high-spec low-price watches. The movements are only coarsely regulated from the factory, and the watch companies don't do any additional regulating when they assemble them into watches. If they did, they would have to charge more. Throw in a bumpy airmail ride from China, and it's not surprising that these watches don't always have the best accuracy. I think anyone who collects these watches needs to invest in a timegrapher and learn how to regulate them. I have had really good luck with NH35 movements. One in particular arrived very badly out of regulation (losing over a minute a day) but after regulation, it is now one of my most accurate watches.

You said about withstanding the rigours of daily life... My boss wore his Rolex to the gym, and managed to make a right mess of it. A small fortune (for him, if it were me it would have been a large fortune) later he got it back. "Did it teach you a lesson?" I asked. "Yes," he said, "I cancelled my gym membership as I didn't expect the gym to cost me as much as it did." He still wears it daily, rain, shine, formal, casual, he enjoys the heck out of it. Me, it would be wrapped in an expensive diaper and placed lovingly in a safe somewhere. I wouldn't enjoy it. My Casios, Steeldives, Addiesdives and other Aliexpress homage/clomage are worn and enjoyed daily. If one dies, I don't cry. I just replace it and off we go again.

Your boss sounds like a moron. It isn't a big deal to just take your watch off if you're at the gym. Leave it in your locker, put it back on afterwards. I wear a nice watch (not Rolex nice, but a Tudor Pelagos - still a lot of money for me) every day and everywhere, but I still take it off if I am doing something that could mess it up. I actually wear it at the gym but it has never been an issue of it getting messed up somehow. Before someone chimes in with "OH BUT THEY WILL STEAL IT FROM YOUR LOCKER"... No. If you can afford a watch, you can afford to insure it. Also -- If you can afford a Rolex you can afford a gym that isn't at risk of someone stealing your shit in the locker room....

Enjoyed the video, thanks. I'm not an expert, but most what I've picked up with regulating some of the same movements, appears in the video. So I must have done some right 😊. If I can't get a +/-0 secs, I prefer just a few seconds gain per day. That's because when the time is adjusted, it's a case of pulling out the crown, waiting for the real time to catch up, then push crown in. No need to move hands. Simpler. Also when I put silicone on the gasket, I put a small amount on, then pretty much wipe it off. A trace/film on the gasket is enough, I think. Thanks again for the video. Very clear and well made. l

I've thought about this too. 95% people won't care.. and the 5% who care won't be impressed with your Ali-Express watch that looks like an expensive watch. In the same way i can't tell a Birkin bag from a nice JC Penney purse. However, If could tell the difference.. I wouldn't be impressed with a Ali-Birkin-look-alike. From personal experience the thrill of a Ali watch wears off FAST. So yeah guys... Taking a design and reproducing something similar happens throughout the world and across all products. Are all your jeans from Levi or are you willing to try another manufacturer? In regards to watches, Tudor takes inspiration from their big brother, is that different from a Chinese company doing the same? The high end watches have always taken inspiration from other designs, is that different when it’s a cheaper manufacturer? There’s a lot of snobbery in this and there’s also different stances on it. Personally I wouldn’t wear a fake whether it’s a pair of jeans or a watch, but I’m fine with a homage. I’m just happy to see a real watch on someone’s wrist rather than a smart watch 😂

As somebody who owns watches from a Rolex all the way to a Watchdives, shame on people who look down on others for what they wear. @@nextonthewrist Which is funny because a huge amount of the "non-Chinese" brands (ESPECIALLY microbrands) are still using Chinese parts and labor to produce the majority of their watches and parts.

Very respectful. I have the Sugess clomage of the Brietling Dues. I actually bought it more because of the ST901 movement and display case. The fact it looks nice doesn’t hurt!

Nice - the ST901 is such a fun movement to enjoy 🙂👌

Clomages are fine. I have two (quartz) Invicta Pro Divers that look similar to the Rolex Submariner and a Pagani Design 1701 that is reminiscent of the Omega Speedmaster. All good watches for the price. 99,9 percent of people who buy clomages are never going to buy 'the real thing', so there is no threat to the luxury watch brands. I very much prefer quartz over automatic movements, so when someone churns out affordable quartz versions of existing high end automatic watches i'm all for it. I would never spend $15k on a watch even if I had the money. That's just stupid. I'm totally against fake watches that use the same brand name as the watch they are replicating. That is immoral and illegal.

I'm really getting more and more into quartz these days as well, and the affordable quartz options on more expensive hardware - absolutely yes! If it's high accuracy quartz I am sold haha.... Cheers for stopping by and commenting, I enjoyed the read 😎🍻

Right, like highlighted in the video, a watch is more than a dial, case and strap. So if you can't tell the difference between a 150 and a 15k watch maybe the problem isn't the 150 dollars watch

I can totally see that not many people can afford to pay £4k for a watch. Frankly I think the price of prestige watches is ridiculous. I remember in 1980 when I started work just about to turn 18 you could buy a Rolex submariner for £360. An average weekly wage was about £110. The problem as I see it with 'clomages' as being described here is that you'll constantly be reminded you haven't got the real thing. Imagine a film prop of a bar of gold. Would you get any satisfaction from owing it? Also because of the fact that many of these 'clomages' are a tiny fraction of the cost of the real thing they tend to fall down in many areas. Screw down crowns that don't operate smoothly. Poorly fitting bracelets. I bought an Omega speedmaster homage an 'Alpha' brand. It had the Chinese ST19 chronograph movement. The winding mechanism broke after a few months! With homages and Clomages I can't see how you can ever get any satisfaction owning one.

These are really good points. I definitely have experienced different tiers of clomage watches - some are very rattly and poor but there's some really high quality options too that could last a lifetime if you wanted them to. I do agree with the feeling of never having the real thing - that is one of the trade offs for sure... and I think some people feel that more than others, at least based on the video comments here 🙂👍 cheers for the comments 🍻
