Is free running at instant/flash speed? Or is it sorcery speed? How does it work during combat when you want to drop more creatures that have triggers during combat? I can’t seem to find this answer anywhere. Can anyone help me?

I think Bolt loses numbers because there's a heck of a lot of imitators and many of them are better than Bolt in the decks you run them in. Torch the Tower I think is the closest to being overall more enticing than Bolt because a lot of small creatures do want to be exiled, though some commander decks value hitting the face for some kind of triggered effect. Galvanic Blast is often forgotten, but reaches further than bolt. Sift through the other one mana red spells before you default to bolt and you might find something that actually works better. Compared to STP, which has had functionally worse deprints, rather than sidegrades like Bolt has gotten- STP is almost always gonna be the best at what it does, especially in the format where oneshot lifegain doesn't matter so much.

What if I said both swords and bolt are bad

Lightning bolt believer here, it's literally an auto include and if you don't, I worry about your intelligence. It does SO MUCH for one mana. Even aside from what you discussed with it hitting the average creature, how often does a black player at your table play a -x/-x spell thats just small enough that it wiped the table but not their big scary creature? Well now it's probably at 3 or less health too. It's also an incredible battle trick. Imagine someone attacks an opponent with a 3/3 and they block with their 6/6 because why not? That free block just turned into killing a high value creature now. Someone just used a -2 ability of their 5 loyalty expensive Planeswalker? Now its a dead planeswalker that you don't have to worry about attacking! And never forget from which it came. The last game of edh I played came down to a 1v1 with single digit life. I wasn't playing red at the time, but if I was, a 1 mana burn 3 literally could have won me the game If you have red in your deck, you should run lightning bolt, straight up

I actually think Lightning Bolt should be played much less in casual commander. In commander, unlike in 1v1 formats, you have 3 opponents, and thus you have to play much more defensively with your removal and save it for the cards that are going to kill you. Lightning Bolt will rarely ever be able to do anything against a card that can kill you. So even though it can kill the average creature in commander, this doesn't matter because removal spells need to be saved to kill the game-ending threats, and for those, Lightning Bolt won't do anything.

Funny how clearly you can see the cEDH decks in the top decks playing Lightning Bolt. Because yes, its not flashy but its still an incredibly efficient way to do what you need to do and it will win you games, thats why people who want to win games above anything else play it.

Even if bolt can hit a lot of creatures, the things it can hit are not always the most important. I’d be less concerned about bolting a mana dork than having plow for something like consecrated sphinx. Not like there aren’t valuable targets for it, but those things also die to plow and get swept up in board wipes. Red doesn’t get too many “destroy target creature” effects besides burn spells, but there are way more decks containing colors besides only red than those containing no colors other than red. So why not play the card that will save the table every time over the one that will give you a “gotcha” moment against the one person playing cheap value creatures?

One time I was playing a normal commander game, and I t1 sol ring signet birds of paradise. the guy to the right of me screamed "this is my moment!" and bolted the bird. I was playing Kinnan btw

Little slow to getting around to watching this video (on my watchlist forever) and i have to say i really enjoyed it, my only minor gripe was i feel like you were rushing through the video, and i'd much prefer a calmer like slower more casual building series, where you're more relaxed, laid back, and you can talk through card choices, gameplans, maybe goldfish a bit, etc, videos don't have to be rushed and I'd be so down for videos like this in a more podcast-esque form factor

The majority of this video was copying across the top edhrec cards (via sorting on scryfall) - I'd have liked a lot more discussion on why you are choosing cards and a lot less on the minutea of adding them. I think the concept of the series is good though
