Have utility lands reached a TIPPING POINT?
Doomed IP? No. Being crushed under the weight of Hasbro? Yes.
Its just Commander Creep, nothing to really talk about.
All decks are or are becoming "goodstuff" decks. It's inevitable. Personally I don't mind. It's not about powercreep- it's always been about player desire to seek power ramp.
It causes this weird effect where sometimes legendary creatures actually have to be made weaker because they have to be balanced around being available in the command zone. A non-legendary creature is not available in the command zone, so it can be as powerful as you like. Commander has warped things by being the most popular format, a format where effectively every single creature is legendary due to singleton rule. Legends were originally conceived as more powerful cards which were balanced around only having access to one of them at a time. Commander has flipped this on its head. It wouldn't surprise me if sometime in the near future we get a cycle of Legendary creatures with the text "this creature can't be your commander."
Judging cards by “the 99” is such a commander player mentality
Lmao yeah the people that play the format commander think about the format commander “ thinking about common cards, such a popper player thing to do” like what are you talking about bro
1) More Legends = More commander product, which is what they care about at the moment. No, they don't care for Standard. 2) More Legends = less opportunity to 4x everything in Standard = more creativity? So actually, is it really a bad thing? 3) More Legends = higher power level, because if the Legends suck, nobody will pick them as commander, and item 1) will fail. So, is it back to being a bad thing? I think it depends on which of 2) and 3) weight more on the game. I think 3) probably weights more, but I don't think the only solution is to lower the number of Legends... I think it is to lower the overall power level and ban more stuff.
I bet that graph of # of legends spikes up right after Commander starts being a higher sales propeller than Standard.
It's weird watching magic become fully focused on commander. I think the legendary commons are cool because they are the few times that legendary creatures matter in limited.
Commanders having to be legendary is the dumbest shit in the world when it's a singleton format. Just get rid of the concept.
Or having to be creatures. I'd never use a creature if given a choice
well, you were right. they are making an animated series
Hoisted with my own petard 💀
I disagree with your decision that because nobody would run it as a commander it shouldnt be legendary. Legendary creatures are not solely designed for commander. The video is still interesting. I do agree that there should be less legendaries as well.
You made a whole video kust yo have a stupid opinion???
Some cases you could argue that some things are legendaries to reduce the chances of being copied, but wotc has been making cards to ignore that restriction.
Yeah, and except for Helm of the Host, a pretty expensive card, legendary copy effects are only printed in blue. Since EDH is eternal, the Spark Double effects will soon reach a critical mass where blue commanders will have a pretty significant advantage. It wouldn't surprise me if they print Helm of the Host into the ground like they did with Panharmonicon.
Once upon a time, WotC was willing to introduce characters to a story without giving them a card. this gave them a cache of names to quote on flavor text or characters to depict in supplemental sets. Flavor text is becoming exceedingly rare, and for a while, WotC had eliminated setting agnostic sets like core sets and the classic commander sets that were not tied to a single plane. (Modern Horizons 3 and Foundation seek to remedy this, but I don't exactly feel like these are long-term solutions to this problem.) Indeed, it feels like a legendary creature quota needs to be met these days, and so very ancillary characters get written up and shoved into sets, or shoved into an ill-fitting peg. I think... if a character is going to be legendary, you best be able to share with your players a short bio on why their story should be compelling, even if their rules text isn't. I think there should be willingness to reprint legends if you want them participating in a story rather than making new designs as new snapshots in their lives. Imagine if in Thunder Junction, We actually just got Marchesa the Black Rose or Riku of Two Reflections or such in standard rather than hokey new designs? even if the EV isn't there, I think there'd be a palpable hype about getting new context for the original versions of cards, and that being willing to introduce a few of these classic commanders into the Brawl ecosystem would be a neat way of supporting that format and giving some commanders a chance to shine. but yeah, I'm in the 1-10 camp myself. I think very fondly of the cycle of 5 legendary creatures from Aether Revolt as some of my favorite mono-colored designs save for maybe like... Kari-zev.
The word Legendary by itself isn't a problem imo, in a way it's kind of nice that the legend rule means less doubling up on the same power cards. The problem is that legendary creatures are increasingly being designed to be "value-added" commanders. Instead of doing interesting things, they say "when the designated synergy event happens, draw a card and/or make a treasure". Thunder Junction had iirc something like 35 of these commanders that in some way gave you card or resource advantage. MTG has been streamlined to the point where these two things are really the only things that matter now, and value-added commanders just make this process happen faster while leaving no memorable impact of themselves.
I just don’t get the point of this video? Legendary isn’t meant only for commander, like if creatures like satoru wasn’t legendary it would be a lot better in modern. Also since Jodah the Unifier exists and is tier 3-4 in historic, every legendary creature in standard set just helps it
legends don't exist solely for commander, skrelv is legendary because having multiple on board would be awful.
Yeah it would be awful, awfully amazing. I fucking love multiple mother of rune effects on board at the same time, can't get enough of em. Need a few more for my taxes list honestly.
Legendary as a balance tool died as soon as Commander started driving the sales. But you're right, it CAN be used as a balance tool... it just isn't anymore.
@pyrefox Exactly, with commander being the flagship format, the balancing of the legend rule is flipped on its head. Decks are singleton anyway, so legendary typing hardly matters. And legend creatures actually have to be toned down since they are potentially always available in the command zone.
The balance purpose of the legendary super type is to stop 1 player from having multiple of it at the same time (ik there are ways around it now, but that was the point). If an effect isn't so power that it would be game breaking to have multiple, the creature shouldn't be legendary. To look at it from another direction, characters getting made into creatures should do things you wouldn't want on non-legendary cards. There are 'legendary' creatures who make 0 appearances in any story with almost no relevance to the wider lore, so their design space would better fit a normal card
Even as someone who loves using legendary creatures and have made decks that use exclusively legendary permanents (excluding lands), 19 legendary creatures per set still sounds like too much.
It's hard to balance Legendaries, because while they can act as Commander, they are also playable in Standard and other sets, just as a card that only one of can be on the field.
I know that with absolute statements there's always going to be an exception, but I fuck with Beza, bounding spring hard- it's so nice to not think about trying to out-attrition your opponents and just focus on control and blinking general good stuff calamity, galloping inferno definitely is a rehash, but so is the Jolly Balloon Man. They all have somewhat different play styles and I appreciate that. For example- calamity can focus a lot more on having minimal board presence before hitting the ground running with two immediate copies of a creature with a burn ETB trigger. something like kiki jiki will lean a lot more into combo-y type decks and it's nice to not be associated with that play style
One thing to note is that the 9 isn’t counting the precon commanders or backups. There’s actually 27 legendary creatures from the set to choose from Edit: I think all the searches are just pulling up the base sets and not the commander product
Yep. I purposely searched only the base sets since every commander deck set has the same number. The Commander decks are another reason to lower the number of base set legends, because some of the coolest designs are often from there.
love the video, keep it going +1 sub
There no reason to add a Commander clause. I wish Wizards would stop printing sets for commander and stick to Commander Precon Exclusive cards, so that you have to pay into Commander precons for Commander cards. Until they make Commander an official format, they need to stop babying it.
kona is so cute omg- amazing decklist and subscribed
Magic isn't organized enough to make an animated show. They can't even keep a solid story going. Twice now, they've tried to come out with some kind of big Marvel style event, and both times, they failed horribly, rushing to the end to move on to something else. They wanted a big battle against the Phyrexians, but they wrote themselves into a corner and decided the marketing of their desparked legendary creatures was more important. They wanted a big battle against Nicol Bolas, so they hired a YA novelist with very little experience or familiarity with Magic. And those novels sold terribly and were panned, so WotC decided ALL novels were a bad idea (even though the next book about Theros looked to be far more successful, and was from an experienced novelist). There are too many cooks at Marvel. And most of the cooks are executives, not writers - executives with no idea how the industry really works, who just want to push money around.
Good video man, a few notes I would say focus on what the commander wants; to be tapped. So for vehicles, any cheap one is your best friend, because it is a guaranteed way to make her tapped, so that 3 mana one that gives mana should be an instant auto include, as it ramps you and gives you a free permanent . And I think you're right with trying to stay away from the 5-6 mana range. anything above 8 mana is equal, they are all free because of your commander, so if its 10, 11, 12 mana etc it doesn't matter because its free. I would also cut yavimaya, 2 of your 6 colorless lands want to tap for 2 mana so the added green benefit is super super niche, and will probably not help, so running yavimaya to color fix 4 lands is not great as the card costs $9 and also can help the other players mana fix their lands, so i would say it is actively bad in that deck. Also you need more removal brother!! Oh and cut those lava spur boots and maybe also the lightning greeves (The shroud prevents you from targeting your own commander to tap her).
i feel MTG is "complicated", because of how the story works, but i feel that if they give it the "Arcane" treatment, the show can work. the main issue is "the fans" the fans of MTG will never agree about "when" the show need to start, some people will try to explain how the show need to start with the old Crew, and explain the whole Dominaria plot, but i feel that is a mistake, the show need to start simple, and with something more recent. For example, avoid using too many characters, 3 main character is the ideal, 5 is the max, Focus on Jace, Chandra and Gideon, start with the Gate Watch plot, i try to keep simple, dont try to explain decades of lore or use 30 different characters in one go. dont try to cover every little details or character of the novels
I actually like that you went over 100 😅, never trust that ive added all the potentially good cards when I hit 100 exactly
Even though this is so predictable it still makes me sad. I really wanted to see some kind of film media about my favorite card game.
bruh, news to me you can drag and drop from scryfall into moxfield... gamechanger. Great vid, I am excited as hell for duskmourn, so far ive built The Mast of Keys as enchantment self mill, Marina Vendrell as doors, doors and more doors, and the one I cant wait for the most, Winter (the jund one) as a discard deck. Kona works great with the new rooms as well.
Just as an FYI, you can do the Scryfall thing entirely from Archidekt - the Card Search section has a "Syntax Search" option, which just searches Scryfall, using the exact keywords you'd use there. You can even set up multiple tabs in advance to prepare searches for Lands, Draw, Ramp, etc., so you don't need to faff with multiple windows! You can also open the Stats and click Lock, which will keep open a bunch of handy charts that show your mana curve, a pie chart of mana usage/production (not really needed in mono-Green of course), and lets you get an overview of various categories, like how many cards you have tagged "Draw", how many Creatures you have, or how many Dragons you have among your Creatures. Hope these tips come in useful!
This is a good thing. Borderlands 2.0
Everytime i hear from maro now, it depresses me lol. Mtg has gone deep into power creep and need to sell packs. Obvious by the printings, no matter how careful rosewater is pretending. We know there has been less future playtesting iirc Hasbro and unfettered shareholder greed have forced magic to overpower and sell out. Remember New World Order, Mark? Most of the commons used to be french/vanilla
The Arcane Effect? Oh, you mean the Game of Thrones Coefficient 😅
