Gliding videos, mostly in and above the clouds.
Tow behind Dynamic's new rocketship
Test tow behind Dynamic WT9 / Rotax 916iS (160hp). Glider was LS8-st with 510 kg weight. Wind was calm and tow was across blue area (no thermals) at 135 km/h.
Later there was also a side-by-side tow (Piper Pawnee vs. Dynamic WT9) from our parallel runways using two 600 kg 18m gliders. When WT9 was at 500 m altitude, our Pawnee was still at 420 m.
Very impressive!

Cloudsurfing 360° Video

I got a request of posting 360° video of cloudsurfing. I personally do not like to watch 360° video on screen, but since some of you use VR headsets, why not. This is raw unedited snip of recent flight. Drop a comment, like etc. if you want to see more videos like this.
Cloudsurfing glider with engine start and low save

Early tow below overcast, and with little help from engine I managed to connect to first thermal down low. After that weather improved and I managed to fly inside and around clouds for few hours. #cloudsurfing
IN-FLIGHT cleaning of glider wing with bugwipers
Переглядів 3,1 тис.4 місяці тому
Glider wings work with laminar airflow. Bugs hit the wing leading edge, and trip the laminar flow into turbulent. This decreases glider performance noticeably. Bugwipers are gadgets, that can scrape off dead bugs off leading edge during flight. Performance decrease due to bugs is most noticeable when circling in a thermal. We do this with minimal speed to keep the turn radius small, usually aro...
Cloudsurfing in a glider

Cloud flying over Southern Finland skies. FAQ 1. This looks absolutely crazy, it has to be illegal The European Aviation Authority (EASA) has regulations that set the framework for how to fly gliders in clouds. Your national authorities may prohibit this, or make it very difficult. Mine does not; they abide by the EASA regulations. You need a cloud flying rating, and the glider needs to have pr...

Cloud flying in a ASW20 glider over Räyskälä
Is that an ls8 18 ?
Pretty cool. What camera do you use? How did you manage to get this onto YT in the 360 format?
I just uploaded it, YT supports 360 format
This ice would make me so worried, but seems like you're OK with it 14:05. Amazing video - thanks for inspiration. Cloud flying been my dream since childhood, will definitely want to (slowly) progress towards "cloud flying" once I finish school
Respecting cloud separation minimums is pretty cringe anyway
You would do that if you fly VFR, but this is IFR flying.
Isn't that dangerous? (Flying in the clouds...you don't know if there are other aircrafts in IFR flights and the ice forming on the wings ?)
It isn't, ifr planes do not generally fly in uncontrolled airspace and ice melts away when descending to lower altitude
Enjoyable, viewed from a Computer. Cheers.
fantástico !!
Hey Kristian at minute 2:32 I see a goose next from your control panel holding your cell phone. Can you tell me a little more about this. I would have thought with all the shaking in a glider the goose neck would bend down. Does it hold well? Where di you get it?
It is Oudie gooseneck sold by an austrian webstore, Streckenflug.at. Their current model is for Oudie N: shop.streckenflug.at/?p=2822 Very happy with it, does not shake or move at all.
As it happened, we changed our gooseneck arm to ram mount. If you need it, it is yours!
Kristian, I should a video of your at our local glider club. It is amazing how there is 2 extremes of "Amazing" vs "No that is illegal" and now midway view of "Ehhh"... We see it in the commentson your channel too. Have you ever wondered about the philosophy between the 2 groups?
It is normal, they see something that is likely not allowed in their country, and due to lack of knowledge they think that it has to be dangerous and illegal. I try to tell what we do and how, smart people can be educated. I do not mind at all answering even less smart comments every now and then. My mission is simply to show everyone the beauty of the world above cloudbase.
Absolutely fantastic shots! WOW! If I wasn't already a pilot, I would be thinking about getting my pilot's license now... Thank you for this uniquely beautiful video and many greetings from Wuppertal, Germany, many happy landings, yours Wolfgang.
Thanks Wolfgang!
Therapeutic
Absolutely beautiful. Thank you!
Great video ! I love it !
Nice! What camera are you using?
Insta X4 with 3m stick
At 9.42 you enter cloud. Why does hitting the cloud make a different noise? Is it more dense due to the moisture and is that picked up by the microphone?
Likely just more turbulent air passing microphone
@@krasw ah yes, clouds are turbulent. Never flown in one so I've never experienced it.
wow the lift all new kinda flying for me THANKS not a pilot but right seat a lot Kin g air & Bonanza Cesni ? Cant imagine free flight but Love the assist as needed ......what about Traffic control or u so far out its No Concern
I fly mostly G-airspace, you are free to do anything there, incl. IFR.
Are gliders permitted to fly into and thru clouds? I thought you had to be IFR rated AND have a transponder
I have rating and equipment, it's legal in my country
@@kraswIn which country are you flying?
@@Aaron-fb9mk Finland, EASA rules
I love this kind of videos! Really a spectacular sight. Great flying!
Thanks mate, I really appreciate this!
@@krasw even my account name exposes me :P Seriously though, I wish I’ll be able to make a pilots license once I grow up.
@@DreamOfFlying I hope you can achieve your dream!
Wooow the best❤ video ever about gliding .
Fascinating
Nää on hyviä pätkiä.
Beautiful.
Es un sueño que todos tuvimos de niños volar entre las nubes...es hermoso
Seriously, the thrill of it all.
Where is this? I was looking at al the sailplanes in the background.
Räyskälä, Finland
Epic :D Watch out for your inputs on 1:05, counter aileron on wingdrop can lead to unintentional spins.
4:50 is my new desktop background
awesome~ what a flying
Hey Kris - you are teasing me huh? The weather is getting warmer and we have just finished washing and waxing our gliders. Here's to another season.....
Haha! Just playing with new insta X4 and MASSIVE selfie stick.
Are there any biplane sailplanes?
No
Does icing on the wings prevent you from using airbrakes (are they stuck) ?
No, the ice is mostly on the leading edges. Sometimes when exiting cloud near zero temperatures, wings are wet while inside cloud and then freeze immediately outside it. Then there might be some droplets in the aileron gaps, which can momentarily freeze aileron (or elevator). Contols free up immediately with a nudge of stick. I believe it is possible to collect ice to open airbrakes so that you cannot close them, but I have never intentionally tried that.
@@krasw ok thanks !
How cool is that 😎
I see that you dont have many places to land in case of emergency. Forests and lakes ;)
It looks worse than it actually is, there are plenty of fields. Of course not as much as in continental Europe.
I own one of these and overall it is great. I once found out, however not to rely on the horizon. I was just below a cloud thermalling. Thought Id put it to the test while flying through the wisps below a nice cloud. As I banked in a steep turn and took a good jolt, the horizon reset itself.. Luckily I had the option to leave the cloud.
First firmware was not robust enough, for example gps reception could affect horizon. But after update, I have had 10 years of 100% reliable flying. I always fly with t&b, so horizon is just additional info.
What did you do to your yaw string? For half the video it doesn’t move at all like it is being held down
It gets wet in cloud and then freezes. I need a heated yaw string!
@@krasw ha!!! I never even thought of that. It made you look like a super star. Perfectly coordinated turns all the time.
Can it remove ice also???
What's next? Lavender scent applicator?
So cool 👍
Bro I had no idea what what happening for the first few seconds 🤣
So, do they have to file for an IFR clearance to fly that-a-way?
Depends on airspace class, in uncontrolled (G-class) airspace there is no requirement/possibility for IFR clearance, whether you fly a glider or Airbus A380 inside the clouds.
Amazing IFR glidining
Very cool.
You gained .01 of a knot.
Bugs on the wing probability has little to no effect on the glider wing tho
So awesome! Only thing I'd be afraid of is some stationary object just coming out of the clouds and you're heading straight for it LOL, that's what I imagined every time I see someone flying through the clouds.
Attach a GoPro to it
Why did I think that the wiper was stationary and the wing was expanding/shrinking? 😂
I wonder if Luke Duke had this shit in Hazzard County back in the 70s and 80s
Crazy Cool
