Testing new bugwipers

  • Testflight of new bugwiper system. System has Ülis Segelflugbedarf Jumbo-putzi electrical motors and BWS flexiputzer blades.
    Bug wipers are plastic blades that run to the tip of the wing and back (with associated motors and retrieve lines) while at the same time scraping the leading edge with very thin monofilament fishing line. This cuts away bugs that are squashed against the wing. The effect for performance is small but noticeable, basically same as changing a new set of tires to racing car (F1, Nascar or whatever). These are mostly installed by competition pilots that want to have 100% of the glider performance.

      Beeping is vertical speed, the frequency tells you if glider is in lift or sinking airmass.

      @@krasw I would think the added weight (not to mention complexity and cost) of a system like this would negate any performance gain of the bug material being cleaned off. But it looks innovative, just thinking out loud and not intentionally trying to be a downer.

    Why not use a super nonstick spray on? Some have -100°F to 500°F, with super slick surface. Water, ice, bug bodies, will slide off. Now question is, length of wings and plane, amount required of spray used to coat wing, will it out weigh the mechanisms to run blades and the blades themselves?
    Personally, I would just do key drag areas, places bugs, dirt and ice might accumulate, that way it minimizes weight to the plane.
    It could reduce static charge, which would reduce lighting attraction.
    It's a spray on, it's not a heavy spray, not like paint.

    • @krasw

      @@tedzbug07 No doubt they are! We have to clean and wash leading edges after every flight. This wears any sealant away very quickly. Ceramic coating might survive only few months I'm afraid.

    Now I don’t know anything about the intricacies of gliding so this is a genuine question, but if squashed bugs on the wing surface could affect aerodynamic efficiency id have to imagine 30 seconds of significantly larger wing contamination from a set of large wiper blades negate any increase in performance from removing the dead bugs?

    • @krasw
      @krasw  3 роки тому +2

      @@jimsvideos7201 Yes exactly, wipers go to wing tips using aerodynamic force and are winched back with strong dyneema line (runs under the wing, not visisible on video). Each wiper has it's own electric winch inside fuselage and small micro controller that senses the line tension (loose line means a huge mess). Pretty high tech 😉
