    OMG Large and in charge. That is THE COOLEST SAYING Seriously- bagels 🥯 in the oven….. are they hard to make?? I was gonna say porter Or skin… you do you 🤣🤣🤣 I always do a sew along to match the instructions…. I will show a couple of ways, but like to follow the instructions cause you won’t always be watching me. Grrrr. I hear ya with the bigness…. It has to be big enough at the waist to go over your hips, so that doesn’t help with the size thing 😳🤔 Hope the lounge suit ain’t masoove 😂 🦩🦩💕💕💖

    I recently retired and I'm sewing again, but I have not planned to sew clothes. I love this blouse though, so am I to do? I love french seams. I'm currently making Santa Sacks and drawstring backpacks for my local Christmas charity program, and I am making french seams on both of them. Thanks for the post.

    I hope you see this question. I haven’t sewed in about 15 years. I went to look at fabric for Project Dress A Girl and was in sticker shock at the prices. My questions are what is the average price you have found for the cotton material and what places do you recommend to purchase fabric for this event. Thanks.

    HI, Erin! Congratulations on reaching 2,000 subscribers! I really enjoyed getting to know you better through this video. You've had an interesting life experience. Our daughter-in-law got hired by DODEA a year and a half ago.They're teaching on a military base in Okinawa. After they got there, our son was hired also. It's a great experience for them but I, selfishly, don't like 3/4 of our grandchildren livng so far away. I do have to say, though, their adventure has expanded our life experience as well. We've been to Japan twice and are going back again in November.

      Thank you Diane! It was a fun video to do. I've been so lucky to get to have a lot of interesting experiences. That's awesome! My mom taught for DODEA. It's great that your son got hired also. The other teachers and their families were our community growing up since we were the constants. The hardest part was being away from extended family though. I'm not sure if it's still the same for your son and DIL, but we got a paid trip back to my mom's home of record every other summer as part of her contract so that helped a little. It's amazing that you've been able to go out there multiple times, though I know it must be so hard to have the grandkids so far away.

      @@ErinSews I have to admit, when he told us she'd accepted a position in Japan, I had horrible anxiety. I had all kinds of concerns, including that they wouldn't have any support system at all. Turns out, the DODEA keeps them well informed and gives lots of advice. The other teachers at their school have been amazingly supportive. Two teachers and their spouses met them at the airport and someone even brought them a few groceries. One of the thoughts I had during my anxious period was "This is how people lose track of their family members. The move to Japan and you never hear from them again," but it's going fine. Thank goodness for technology and the wonders of FaceTime!

Thanks for putting your time and effort into this video and all the others you do. I have no clue where to start but they are definitely a work of art.

      Thank you Kelly! I'm so glad you've found inspiration from me! You have no idea how happy that makes my heart. There's nothing wrong with making a good TNT over and over again if that's what makes you happy and gives you satisfaction. I think UA-cam can sometimes make it feel like we constantly have to be trying new patterns but that is certainly not what everyone wants/needs/should do. I would start with a baby size quilt or a runner with a simple pattern in order to learn the process. The standing tall quilt pattern is free and perfect for jelly rolls (precut 2.5" strips). That way you can learn the process and get a taste without having to spend a ton of time or resources on it.

    Hi Erin, I have just found your chanel and really enjoyed watching my first vlog. I too learnt to sew and knit from my mother who was a tailoress. I don't class myself as fitting into any 'box'. I just do what I love for myself and enjoy the moment. If I don't know something I do what you do and watch youtube then move on. I actually miss the sound of the sewing machine chugging along. The whole sitting at the machine and holding the material, it is hard to explain but I just love it. Anyway I am blabbing away. I am going to binge watch the rest of your videos now. Take care from the UK xx

    I used to sew in the dining room, but then the kids grew up and I sew in play room. It is still a place that needs organizing. I will hit a snag and work on organizing it. My cutting table is an old door. I sometimes put things on the ex door knob and whatever I just lost is on the floor. I quilt and do garment sewing, as well. I have enjoyed your videos. It does seem to feel like a lot of people LOVE flowiness and drape. I think I don't like how flowy things end up clinging or brushing my body too much? Maybe it's because I need airflow. It's not just you though! Give me structured, natural, woven!

    • @ErinSews
      @ErinSews 10 днів тому

      I found another mis-match that is actually pretty important. The printed instructions for the top have you understitch the back neck facing but it's only a quarter of an inch and very thick based on the fabric. I skipped it because it just wasn't going to happen, and sure enough when I went back and watched Mimi G's sew along, she skipped it too. 🙄

    Great video! It was so nice to learn more about you! You know I always look forward to you entertaining and down to earth videos! I wore one of my new blouses on Wednesday to work on the office and for some compliments on it. Then when at the pharmacy I was asked by the clerk where I got my top and then how much I would charge to make her one. I told her I didn’t commission sew, but thank you. @@ErinSews thank you so much for those kind words!💜 It was the aqua colored Lenox that I was wearing with my purple pants in the picture I sent you. I don’t think most people understand the time and effort it takes to make garments and they often think you can make them something cheaper than they can buy it at Target. Lol! But I definitely like to do some gift sewing at Christmas. I downloaded the Sam’s apron from Helen’s closet tonight to make for my SIL for Christmas.

    Great video and not boring at all!!! I watch a ton of sewing videos (when I'm sewing and when I'm not) b/c I don't know anyone else who sews and it's like a sewing circle. It's also almost 100% pleasant and positive, kind of a Hallmark channel experience (guessing, as I've never watched that).Congratulations on 2K! I also hate cutting things out and I cut out on the floor for almost everything but a counter-height table would be nice; cutting on my dining room table results in a backache. My grandmother was a seamstress and hated cutting things out so it's genetic 😁. We all have our favorite things because they work for us like the clever zippers you put in the dress, or because we like the color and fabric and the way something looks so that it gets worn more than other things. You had a cool job - our neighbor's daughter went to Annapolis, was a fighter pilot and now works in Navy intelligence after having two children - her dad was a fighter pilot so it was not a strange idea to her. I think most of us have more than one style depending on the occasion and what appeals to us. As for what makes someone an advanced sewist, I would think it's being able to make almost anything, such as tailoring a suit or making a wedding gown with all the boning, fitting, "pickups" for the train, etc., but a lot of what is advanced is more a matter of taking the time to learn the steps involved with a more complex process than an easy pattern - it's not that it can't be done by you, but it will take a lot more trial, error and study than you may want to give. I would never try to make my own jeans, for example, because I'm pretty sure I can find something readily available for a good price that I'll be satisfied with but some people enjoy the challenge or have particular needs that aren't met with ready-to-wear. Making my own bias tape for the 1st time while watching!

      Thank you! I love the sewing circle feel of this community and wish that *somehow* we could all just magically appear in a giant place and sew together. That might be too much, but I feel like this community has connected SO many wonderful people with a shared love for sewing. I went to a sewing social yesterday and it turned out just to be my friend and I. We both spent half the time cutting since we had access to a giant counter-height cutting table. We spent half of THAT time complaining about how long it takes to cut things out 😬 I found your perspective on sewing levels and being advanced really interesting, and pretty in line with how I think of being a FULL UP seamstress. I took on some uniform alterations for coworkers of my husband's after I filmed this video because I knew I was capable of doing the tasks. It took me MUCH longer than a professional would have taken since it was all new. (I definitely charged lol) Bias tape! Fun! I hope you didn't burn any of your fingers. I always feel like I'm playing chicken with the iron.

    I love the quilt top! And patching together the sashing is extra cool, you'll be able to smile every time you curl up under it because you've been so clever! 😘 Yup, those formatted instructions. [162 lines of text edited out.. 😆😆] I don't think anyone there has tried 'press under the seam allowance' on knit fabric. It looks to be a very comfy outfit! BTW, I'm wearing some linen jeans with that leg shape today! ( I AM Sunshine jeans. )I like the look of the Vogue pattern, and how from here they have a "trouser" look to them, too, like they're a little lighter weight than jeans. I think you'll like Vogue's instructions - there's usually a little more in the way of details in the pattern. 😘😘

    • @ErinSews
      @ErinSews 10 днів тому

      Yes! I really dug deep into my stash for a lot of this quilt top and it has been immensely satisfying to do so. uh, yeah. I always like to double check the suggested fabrics to make sure I'm not the silly one. They also wanted me to understitch a 1/4" seam allowance on the back facing, which would be perfectly reasonable if it weren't 3 layers of squishy jacquard toweling lol. Needless to say, I skipped it. Mimi G didn't do it in her sew along either so...yeah. I'm realllyyyy excited for those pants. I looked at the I am Sunshines a long time ago but wasn't feeling brave enough then to go for it. The Vogue pattern is definitely more trouser-y based on the suggested fabrics (crepe, wool suiting, gabardine, medium weight denim).

    Your Standing Tall quilt is going to be so beautiful. I really hope you make the deadline because I selfishly really want to see it. 😂 I love that you’re making the little quilt with Brady. Must be a true exercise in patience though… much admiration on my part here! I really like the fabric you’re using for that Simplicity outfit. Can’t wait to see that one finished as well. Have a good weekend!! Xx

      I also really want to finish it because I know that if I don't do it now, the quilt top will sit for a while. I'm doing a few uniform alterations for people Adam works with, (in exchange for money haha) and plan to baste it once I get those done this weekend. So. much. patience. We had all the pieces nicely paired and stacked up, but then Brady wanted to play with them and they got scattered everywhere. She then immediately asked to sew them 😂 Come on kid! I hope you're having a great Saturday!

    Erin, I really appreciate your comprehensive answer to my question. I’ve heard a lot of people say if I could make a Chanel coat I would know I’m advanced in my skills, or if I could make consistently good bound buttonholes, I’d feel like I was an accomplished sewist. I guess I asked the question because I was going through my own personal reflection on the subject, and I was curious about what you thought. I’ve been sewing for an extremely long time, yet I don’t consider myself advanced. There are a lot of things I haven’t even tried, like I’ve never sewn a raincoat or a swimsuit or a bra. I feel like I should have some sewing aspirations, but to be honest I don’t. I just sew what makes me happy. If it requires new skills I practice until I conquer them just like you do. Each new year when everyone discusses their goals, I almost never have any. This is the first year that I can remember that I made a sewing resolution, and that was to incorporate more decorative stitches in my projects. That requires zero sewing skills only a measure of thought and planning. Why don’t I want to be an advanced seamstress? My husband will frequently asked me if a shirt or pants I’m wearing were purchased or made. He thinks I don’t give myself enough credit for my sewing skills. I was in the thrift store and a lady asked me if I thought that the fabric she was holding was linen? I crushed up a handful to see if it wrinkled without even thinking. The woman said something along the lines of she should have thought to do that. It’s all made me wonder about the importance of sewing in my life. I loved what you said about learning so much from just being around your mother. And you did learn and excellent mindset from her. I imagine she is an amazing lady. My mother sewed her own clothes and some for us as well, but she never talked about sewing much or taught any of us girls to sew. I learned at a Christian school I attended for a couple of years. I do believe that sewing was a gift from God to me because it has brought me so much enjoyment and provided for so many practical needs. It is amazing to me that the way we think can have so much impact on our lives. Your mother gave you a “can do” mindset, and it has powerfully affected your life. It just makes me ponder all the more my relationship with sewing. Maybe the reason I don’t feel any need to be advanced is because my skill level has always expanded to meet my needs, just like yours has. What more could anyone else ask for? Just FYI, you may or may not want a Pfaff Performance Icon. I got the Performance 5.2 and it’s okay, but I find the 9mm feed assembly too big for my comfort. The feet are huge and it makes precision sewing a little bit more cumbersome for me. I do still sew on it and have no complaints about the actual machine, but I’ve been sewing mainly on my vintage machine for a few years now because I like the narrower feed assemblies.

    • @ErinSews
      @ErinSews 10 днів тому

      It was a really great question and I appreciate you asking it. Since transitioning out of the workforce and a very goal oriented environment, I've thought A LOT about why our society is so focused on doing more and being better (*cough* capitalism *cough*). I think it's TOTALLY fine to just enjoy what you make and learn things as you want to and not have a bunch of aspirations. I love that you said sewing brings you enjoyment. That's the whole point of it really, for me at least, Interestingly, I was asked to do a few basic uniform alterations recently and haven't hesitated in saying yes (in exchange for money lol) because I know I'm totally capable of doing them. Everything has to be done for the first time at some point! Interesting point about the feed assembly! I hadn't thought of that. I'm hoping to just stick with my Ambition 620 for a longggggg time, but it was kind of fun to browse a little.

    You have such an interesting life! The nursing dress hack is amazing, putting in the invisible zippers wow. My husband gives great reviews too but he is also free with his suggestions 😂which I sometimes take as criticism. I vlog on what I’m interested in mostly although I have started thinking about if something would be interesting but I also treat it like a diary of sorts. It is funny how it’s changing my thought process slowly and I consider how I’d film things. Really interesting vlog thanks for sharing!

      Thank you for watching! I got some really great questions. "Free with his suggestions" 😂 I need Adam to be slightly more honest, but not cross the threshold into criticism. It's a fine balance but I want him to find it so that I stop having to mentally track how often he wear my makes lol. The "how to film things" aspect is the hardest part for me. There's a lot more I'd like to show but then I notice the family photos in the shot, or the awful lighting, or the crowded space I'm trying to squeeze into. I get why professional content creators get studios!
