Merry Christmas, Kari!!🎄🎅 I've only had 1 European Christmas experience on my OE 30 years ago (yikes!) and remember seeing the Christmas window display at the Galeries Lafayette. It was very beautiful! Good haul. I'll have to put Cusk on my list, and I love Ottessa Moshfegh, so want to read more of her in 2025. Am reading Foster by Claire Keegan today, and it'll probably make me cry 😢

Have you looked at Light Novels, for your translated fiction challenge? Many manga, and anime, are based on light novel stories. Strike the Blood (urban fantasy) is a good example of this! As for my reading goals, for this year, I've gotten nowhere near, as I'm not really much of a reader. I'm hoping to change that next year, however, as I've signed up to The 52 Book Club challenge! 🙂

@@ExLibrisKari do you watch anime, at all? That's a good way to start, if you do, when it comes to seeking out light novels. 🙂

I achieved most of my goals, but I try to keep my goals pretty light. One thing that will become a goal for 2025 is to reread some of my books, so this year I've reread 12 books and I really enjoyed that. Am also focusing on reading what I own and I've c. 200 books unread on my shelves so I'd like to continue getting c. 30-40 of those off my TBR each year. The only bigger goal I failed on was to read a > 1,000 page novel. I wonder why that failed haha 😂

It's usually the same for me, especially for certain Universes where I re-read the same books rather than any of the others set in that world.

You are prepared! I have thought of ideas I'd like for my 2025 reading journal, but haven't even started XD I have horrible writing, and don't have a printer, so am trying to think of cute ways to get around not having printed cover images in my journal. My daughter suggested trying to just draw tiny images/use some stickers that are to do with things in a book which I'll probably end up doing!

Mine takes literally forever to set up so I have to start really early if I have any hopes of being able to use it at the start of 2025 😅 Getting some cute stickers that represent some themes of your books is a great idea!

Easiest way is google book names, save the image that you see there make a collage of all the ones you want to print on your phone, depending on your phone you can create collage right through your photo gallery by selecting pics and making collage or you can download apps that helps photo collage Then get it printed, idk if it's possible where you live, but here where I live the shop owner even helps out with sorting all this things, all you need is pictures you need to print, and they will tell you possible sizes and get it printed accordingly

    • @owoowoowowo
      @owoowoowowo 5 днів тому

There more ways that makes it look clean like using canva app to know the size before even making collage, images from official sites or Goodreads etc

I love your goals!! As a professional translator (from English to French) and also a writer, I can tell you that before a book gets translated, it needs to achieve a rather high level of success in its original language. It might explain why it appeals to a certain readership…books that “fail” don’t usually get translated - in English, because the market is huge, even terrible books offen achieve commercial success 🫢

  • @jhasani79

So last week I finished reading "The Goldfinch". I thought it was pretty good. Like you said how the painting is always in the background, which I thought was brilliant because it is also always in the back of your mind while reading. The writing itself wasn't as great as "The Secret History" (My opinion. Although I absolutely loved it), but still masterful writing from Donna Tartt. She writes books that get you obsessed with until you finish it, and then you are still thinking about it afterward. Now as for the film adaptation of the book, which I decided to watch after, it was the worst film I have ever seen. It was so disjointed, the dialogues were cut, scenes that highlight important parts were left out, locations which are a big part of the novel were there but barely, and the casting for the most part was terrible (just two actors I thought were good for the part), as well as the acting was terrible(Nicole Kidman - wow, really bad acting. And I usually like her acting). DO NOT WATCH THAT FILM!!! Stick with the book. Enjoy it savor it and look forward to reading her other works.

Hi Kari! Greetings from Hungary! I love your idea about keeping your reading goal reasonable, and only increasing it by 5 book annually. I feel like I am in a big transition period regarding my reading life, and my goals for 2025 show that. My reading goal was 120 books for 2024, I am at book 135 right now, so I could go for 130, I guess for 2025, but I will keep it at 120. Here are the reasons why. For years I only read e-books (because of arthritis I could not hold hardbacks) but now that my hands are doing better, I rediscovered the joy of reading hardbacks. And I also started annotating. My first book annotated was Babel and I had a BLAST!! So now I can not wait to annotate more books. I am rambling sorry!! Okay.... my goals for 2025! Read 120 books, Read more hardbacks, Annotate More Books, Quality over Quantity, Start a reading journal, read 3 classics and read at least 1 book nominated for a prize (Booker or Womens Fiction.) Love xxx

Just read Exalted by Anna Dorn. Those women were super unlikableeeee.... 😬 a hard book to explain without giving away the twist..which i feel like i should have picked up on sooner btw lol. The author making the scorpio an obsessive person was on point though so sometimes she was relatable... im a scorpio with a scorpio stellium. When she started to bash astrology i agreed that its not good to use it for the reasons she was using it. I thought she didnt even understand astrology lol...like why didnt she look at her and his synastry chart? Not even once... smh...all that bein said, i read it in one day. It was riveting.

I agree on 'gentle goals'. Lots push for these unreasonable goals and then reading becomes a challenge and a chore and not fun. Reading is for fun! My goal for 2024 was 52 books. I've just read my 100th book. If I get to 104 I'll have doubled my goal so awesome, but if I don't reach it, it's allgood. Hello from New Zealand 👋 and I couldn't tell if we were coloured in (cause bad eyes 😕) but my daughter loves Ngaio Marsh (like Agatha Christie) and Catherine Chigdey is an author I want to read, as she's popular and writes weird-ish books 😁

The important question is, Kari, is a Blob of what?! 😂 Seriously, great list. I think you'll love Murakami. Some say he's a massive sexist, but it's all about artist vs art, which sadly, lots miss the point on. I was lucky enough to hear Murakami talk years ago at a Writers Festival here, and he was the sweetest, funniest man! Word of warning though, Norwegian Wood was his 1st book, and he now doesn't like it lol. I want to read some of these books in 2025 as well, including Lolita.

Good question, I’m nervous to find out 😅 I hope I like Murakami more than he likes himself then lol but your confidence in me liking him is promising!

I think you should definitely read your 'Sally-signed-this' edition! Had 2 great reading months, with 13 reads in both October and November, but now I'm in a bit of a slump. Once I finish my reread of LotR The Two Towers I'll have hit 100 books for the year, which is great by me! My goal was 52, so yay 😁

Look up tutorials for ‘Dutch door’ bullet journal spreads, most would cover enough to get you there-also, agreed, she was brilliant for adding this 😋

Thank you Kari for your lovely video! I have never read a Sally Rooney book before ( I know....😮😅) bit will definitely give intermezzo a try! Just finished a dance with dragons. I am planning on reading Beautiful Ugly by Alice Feeney, The most wonderful crime of the year, Terror by Dan Simmons, Vladimir and the Winter Street series by Elin Hilderbrand. I read the christmas guest last year and absolutely loved it, so I want to reread it this year ❤❤❤ Can not wait for your next video! Byeeee

You have Santons! My dad bought a set of them in Marseilles in 1944. He was stationed there during the war. I have the set now, which I simply adore. The figures are very similar. Bread baker. The sheep. The women carrying firewood. Very rustic. Plus the scene of the manger--including camels and the 3 Wise Men. The story idea was all the townspeople came to see the baby in the manger. Not just kings but the hard working common people. Thanks so much.

Honey I read the push . Utter trash no plot twist . It was made very very clear in the beginning that violet/the daughter was a psychotic kid . The whole Novel is just the mom telling everyone that the daughter is not normal , and the dad or the husband always ignoring his wife . He cheated on her too . Trash novel . Thanks for shity suggestion bro

My dream is to visit Paris someday, I must go to this bookstore, I'd love to sit there drink a good cup of coffee and talk to the people, just by seeing this place I feel in home.

Hey Kari! Great review thanks! I was wondering if you could make a video for us about your annotations? How you write them? What is your process? What do you write down as notes? Would really love to hear your toughts on that topic!

If you find that the Velcro dots add more bulk than you want in your book, you might consider using temporary scrapbook adhesive or clear photo corners to hold the book covers. Then when you have a final list at the end of the year, you could adhere them with permanent adhesive (if you want).
