Thanks for watching and we can't wait to share more pf our build and adventures with you.
Our van is a VW Crafter Long Wheel Base LWB 4 Motion (4x4/AWD) Van.
In this video, I walk you through the process of installing a 660Ah Victron power system in our 4x4 VW Crafter van build. The electrical system is one of the trickiest and most crucial parts of any van build, and I'm breaking it down step by step to make it less daunting. I start by unboxing all the components, including two 330Ah Victron batteries and a 3000W Multiplus 2 inverter-way bigger than I expected! I then explain how I’ve built the electrical cupboard and laid out all the components to ensure everything fits into the limited space.
I go into detail about how I mounted everything, from the inverter to the battery protectors, fuse boards, and other components, while using proper wiring techniques, wire gauges, and lugs. To make it easier to work in such a tight space, I used Riv nuts to secure everything safely without damaging the van walls.
Throughout the build, I tackled a lot of problem-solving, like how to fit the heavy batteries securely and how to build around the curved van walls. I even made some custom solutions, like iron-on laminate strips to finish off the shelving and suede lining to give it a professional, polished look.
In this first part, I focus on constructing the cupboard and mounting the components. In part two, I’ll be wiring everything up and finalizing the system to make sure it’s fully functional. Even though this is my first time doing something like this, with a good wiring diagram and some patience, I’m confident I’ll get everything working.
If you're interested in van builds or installing a complex electrical system, I hope this helps break it down for you. Make sure to subscribe to follow along as we continue with the wiring in the next video!

    Any thoughts on the e-Sprinter? With a 200mile range and useful application of the batteries for camping (not least a/c at night), is it something worth considering?

    • @abucklife
      @abucklife 20 годин тому

      I want to do a video on this. I love the idea of it But from my initial research. For our use and being off grid I don’t think the range is long enough and then you consider if your using the electricity you could eat through battery. But if you were to only wanted to use n sites and hooked up could be great if the range was slightly more. I think these vehicles really should have 500 miles of range at least. When we drive through France we can easily do 400 miles. I defiantly think there is potential in the future.

    You can use UK signs on number plate , except Spain , Cyprus and Malta they need a oval sticker , see government website Stickers for driving outside the UK You may need to display a white oval UK sticker on the rear of your vehicle when driving outside the UK. This depends on your number plate and where you are going. You do not need a UK sticker if your number plate has the UK identifier with the Union flag (also known as the Union Jack). You must display a UK sticker if your number plate has any of these: numbers and letters only, no flag or identifier a GB identifier with the Union flag a European Union flag a national flag of England, Scotland or Wales UK stickers have replaced the old white oval GB stickers. If you have a GB sticker, cover or remove it before driving outside the UK. Do not put the sticker on your numberplate. Driving in Spain, Cyprus and Malta You must display a UK sticker to drive in Spain, Cyprus and Malta, no matter what’s on your number plate. Driving in the Republic of Ireland You do not need a UK sticker to drive in Ireland no matter what’s on your number plate.

    Great to see someone having a go and doing a really good job of it!! Couple of points that may help though, laminate trimmers should be run in an anti clockwise direction so they cut/bite into the material. Would it not have been easier to drill pilot holes in the back of the cabinets then drill through them to mark for the rib nuts? Keep up the good work, will look the nuts when finished!

    • @abucklife
      @abucklife 7 днів тому

    Great video! & love the electric cupboard - I would recommend one small addition however for safety - you need to 'box in' the base of those batteries with some wood or metal "stops" - to prevent them sliding around (no amount of straps will stop something that heavy if you emergency brake). The base of my batteries has a 1 inch high wooden boarder around the bottom of the batteries so they cannot move - the straps then stop it bouncing up & down over bumps. Looking at the cupboard you could attach a metal 'lip' on the side edge of the shelf and wooden spacers between the batts - put some rubber between the metal lip and the battery itself. Just an idea to increase safety - otherwise looks perfect!

    • @abucklife
      @abucklife 7 днів тому

      Thanks Ben. I think you’re right. I’m defiantly going to put a strip round the base of the batteries. I think I might dab a breaker up to hold them down to. Something more strong.

    Awesome series. One question though. It seems with watertank and the electric system all the way back behind the axle, you could get some weight related problems. Did you take that in account? Thx Eric

    • @abucklife
      @abucklife 8 днів тому

      Hi Eric. Great question. I considered the weight. Front to back and side to side. Front to back we do have the rock and roll bed which is heavy at the front. I then considered the water on the left and the electrics on the right because the rock and roll bed is on the right and figured the water weighs more. Fingers crossed it’s ok. If not and you see a wonky van go past give us a wave 😅
