Gerrit shares some of his most rewarding recordings, including yellow-billed loons and barred owls. In this part of the conversation, They discuss the challenges of recording audio in the Arctic, including dealing with bugs and wind. They also talk about the techniques Gerrit has developed for documenting birds and wildlife, including the use of blinds. They discuss the importance of ethical filming and the need to balance conservation with capturing valuable footage. They also touch on Gerrit's work in the National Petroleum Reserve and Isenberg Lagoon, and the efforts to protect these areas. Finally, they discuss Gerrit's company, Tragopan, which produces photography blinds and other equipment for wildlife photographers. In this final part of the conversation, Gerrit and the hosts discuss the different types of blinds used for bird photography, including laydown blinds, one-person blinds, and chair blinds. They also share their experiences with encountering bears while in the blinds. Gerrit mentions his plans to explore the Colville River special area and film raptors and landscapes there. Great vid , do you ever use earphones ? to monitor your audio when filming wildlife ,cheers
Maybe it's albino Raven! 🤔
Good thought but albinism is a complete lack of pigment and the slight black coloring and blue eyes would eliminate this possibility. This is a result of leucism (a partial loss of pigment).
@@TruthLegend True, something caused that mutations or it can be (Al generated images). Not real footage.
@11:00 Good grief. I live in Anchorage and 🤬 🫎.
Year 3 is yhe worst. That's the year that all the males turn into Frank Zappa and the mothers of invention cover bands and , well its just a pain. Its all day all night, we're not a jazz band we're rock music. And we coined the phrase "Freak-out". Or just get on the bus, uts a way of life. Great googleymoogley. Mother Mary and Joseph. Really its just day's and days of crap music that 90% of the fans are gonna hate, real improvisational, orchestrated flatulence amd queeeffz. If your lucky they play a little barely tolerable Captain Beef heart stuff. Pretty bsire they donit just to mess with ya, but mixed in with those days of the terriblist stuff you've ever known will be a catchy, good song with regular time and what would be an incredible guitar solo but it all falls apart. Because you know, cuz there still just a bunch of big birds. Usually blowd over in 2 or 3 weeks or so. Could be worse. The females go all granola, living for coffee and spoken word. And talking about how Dylans a sell out hack poet. whatever you do dont open or hold a door for them or tell them they're pretty. Fuuuff, sheeesh.
I started getting stuff from Smallrig to build my setup. 😊 Thanks, as always, for helping me spend my lunch money on stuff I didn’t know I needed. 😂
Canon C400 + Sigma EF 60-600 or Canon RF 200-800 is the best for wilflife. Maybe the Canon R1 will be even better because of faster read-out speed and the best AF for animals.
Very beautiful ❤
It’s definitely a struggle filming myself in a kayak. Especially when the water isn’t so calm.
I have the red V raptor. Two questions. What rails system are you using and what focus gear are you using on that lens specifically?
Michael uses the 19mm Bright Tangerine “Drumstix” titanium rails. The focus wheel is a discontinued Edelkrone Focus ONE but we’ve actually taken that piece off to save weight and find the Sigma lens is pretty easy to focus without.
Super Video, very interesting. Keep well and stay safe 👍🇬🇧
Thanks 👍
Белый ангел!) Влюблена))
Great podcast, loads of great insights. Talk about living the dream. Love his UA-cam channel. We are almost neighbors, I’m across the Columbia river in Vancouver.
Yeah, Gerrit is a wealth of knowledge!
This is just a fun hobby for me that keeps me outdoors as I age learning about wildlife. When I got my first camera the store recommended I seek out Doug's videos on UA-cam. I've watched them so many times and always learn something new. I can't thank him enough for the resource those video's provide. I'm in NC not too far from you Doug and saw a pronothotary warbler this weekend. Only the 2nd time I have. Couldn't agree more that they are one of the prettiest birds and so friendly!
It's a great hobby to have and Doug is a great teacher. He's back adding video on his channel so make sure you check them out.
This was a great episode and guest. I have long seen Gerrit's work, initially through the Cornell Lab productions and really appreciate his approach and dedication. The sound piece is a whole other level. You have put together a great podcast, thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
what is Panzerfaust? when an animal comes in front of the camera, it instinctively raises its hands up in a gesture of surrender
and here I thought a Panzerfaust was an anti-tank explosive
I tried to film some whitetail. I couldn't do it. They were moving too fast and I don't know what I am doing. I got film of deer legs.Lol😂😂😂
At least you are getting out there. Every failure teaches you something new!
The film is hilarious
Pro 👌🏼
Thanks for watching!
Love it
My auntie and uncle! Love them and this interview!!
Bird guru right there! Good stuff guys!
Great job
Thanks!
I'm curious why you went with S35 instead of VV? Limited telephoto selection that covers the VV sensor size?
It’s pretty simple, Canon’s CN20 is a S35 and I primarily use that lens.
@@TruthLegend that makes sense. There’s not many options with that kind of reach. I’m currently running an a7s3 with 200-600mm and while it’s great for the price point I’d love to have a little more reach and a little more resolution at 120fps. A7s3 to a V Raptor is quite a leap though. 😆
Another great podcast. Really enjoyed hearing about Gerrit’s vast knowledge and experience. I vote to bring him back in the fall!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I do like Gerrits videos he does is nice job with them
Thanks for watching!
Wow he was a great guest. Plenty to share on a wide variety of topics.
35:30 The resemblance to Billy Bob Thornton in U Turn is uncanny. Awesome video, awesome adventure!
I just need a tank top and I think I'd fit the bill 100% 🤣 Thanks for tuning in! - Brandon
This is so damn cool
Thanks for watching!
Awesome
The snow and fog just add to a great atmosphere
It that to the bone cold
Michigan moose is on my hit list this year
The Velvet Queen (or La Panthère des Neiges (The Snow Leopard) in the original French) is probably the best wildlife film/documentary that I have ever seen. It contains footage of, not just snow leopards, but a wide variety of Tibetian/Mongolian wildlife including wolves, their weird endemic Fox, wild Yaks, Antelope and Pallas's Cat plus more. It's not just about wildlife though, but about the process of finding the animals and recording them in a very non standard fashion. That is what puts this film into it's own unique category. There is none of that krappi "this is really dangerous" D grade doco stuff that the general public seem to absorb, or the fake story where stock footage is pasted together to make a "heartwarming account of survival". Importantly for we photo/video people, it addresses the philosophy of finding and recording wild animals. Embracing the "not finding" and learning the art of patience. I have the audiobook by Sylvain Tesson and it's very good as well, with a few exceptions where it kinda wanders off and gets lost. But well worth a read or listen. If you haven't already done so, also watch the UA-cam vid on Vincent Munier photographing arctic wolves on Ellesmere Island. He is what Morten Hilmer aspires to be.
Great podcast. Rick and Libby are great people so glad I had the opportunity to meet them on the bear trip. Their UA-cam channel is fantastic, I have learned so much about moose from them. And yes I’m living photographing moose vicariously through Mooseman, because I don’t know if I will be able too travel up there to photography moose.
Hey Craig, Rick here. Thanks so much, and we are excited that you are part of our crowd on our YT channel. Ton of fun going on there. Be well Craig!
Great session! Love these guys!! Very down to earth and super knowledgeable. the RED VR does record audio . . . But they sure didn’t make it easy to get something usable.
Yes they are as genuine as it gets! Thanks for tuning in 😁
I just can't get enough of "real" nature and wildlife videos and educational conversations by actual adventurers with firsthand experience of the realm of nature in the wild. I followed a link on Moose Man to see what they were up to here, and am thankful for finding Truth and Legends! I look forward to continue following Rick and Libby and getting to know you guys on this channel in the coming seasons.
Thank you for the kind words and happy to have you be apart of our channel. Rick and Libby are the real deal 😉 -Eric
Great interview! So inspiring and humble and from New Hampy! Like me.
Love the podcast and great to see Team Moose Man on here! Great to hear your backstory more and some great tips that are helpful as I fumble my way into video myself. Always love Rick and Libby's enthusiasm and respect for nature!
We couldn't agree more and thanks for watching! If there's specific topics you'd like us to cover and the podcast let us know and we see if we can make it happen!
(thanks so much, John! these guys are the best!)
A total pleasure with come on, share info, and help you build your channel and bring fun to viewers.
Team Mooseman is the best! Thanks for your sharing your time and knowledge!
Wow! Does this species of pika only live in AK? Very nice captures! Thank you!😊
Collared Pika range extends into Canada (Yukon, BC, and Northwest Territories) but is different than the American Pika found in the western lower 48 states.
Very nice work and nice video of Ptarmigan😊 //Karl-David
Nice job, thanks for sharing with us!
You bet!
Great job Eric! This video rocks (minus the dogs scaring the birds)
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it 😁
Nice Video, I to (being a wildlife filmmaker) totally understand the frustration of not seeing a thing sometimes. Ugh. Your exposure of the Ptarmigan and snow is exceptional. I'm curious what was your white balance? When I'm in snow I have at 6200 Kalvin.
Thanks for the kind words, I still feel like I have a lot to learn on the color side, but I’ve made enough mistake now to get by haha. These were shot at 6400k with a slight tweak in WB/tint. Nailing exposure in snow has been a learning curve for sure but (un)luckily we are just a few inches away from an all time seasonal record so it’s been all I’ve been shooting since October! Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed it! -Eric
Nicely done, Eric. Bummer about the dogs scaring off your birds but . . . it happens. Lovely footage of them at the end.
Yeah, the reality of filming in popular public places. It makes you appreciate those special moments that much more! Thanks for watching!
❤️
Beautiful video Eric, thanks for sharing.
My pleasure! Thanks for watching
How disappointing, I like dog but sometimes argh 😠. Lovely scenery. How nice is it to live so close to wildlife.
Yes, the close access is what I love about living here but it also means dealing with everyone else. I almost didn’t post a “fail” but figured it’s about as true to most outings as I go on. Thanks for watching! -Eric
Wow, I’m tired after watching this, the energy Lee exudes is something. He brings up a lot of good points on how to approach your photography journey. What a small world photography is some times, I have all of John Shaws books. Great podcast,
I agree 100%
You should see how tired I am each evening! It is exhausting, I have no place to escape! Thanks for watching!
I enjoyed this interview so much, I listened to it twice. Thanks guys for the podcasts!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for the positive comment! I have been in Cuba, then Patagonia, then Ohio, back to Texas for the Spring Expo at Precision Camera and finally time to respond!
I like this guy😊
We did too!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
I see myself in this guy. Be you is just wow.
Thanks for watching!
Glad you enjoyed it!
