Great information. I have a few questions, hope they are not to stupid, I’m just old and just getting started. I shoot nikon. What is the difference between H.265 8 bit and H.265 10 bit. On the H.265 10 bit you have a choice of SDL and HLG, what is the difference? 1080 vs 2160? So you just need to turn your camera vertical for tik toks?

Thanks for watching Craig. So the 8-bit vs 10-bit. An 8-bit color system is capable of producing over 16 million colors. In a 10-bit system, you can produce 1,073,741,824 colors which is 64 times of the colors of the 8-bit. The caveat is the 10-bit is going to take more space, so check each version and see if you notice a difference.
I believe SDL and HLG are the color profiles from Nikon. I'm not 100% familiar with this, so double check me. Are the color profiles carried over from the photo side or is that a color profile for stills? I thought the colors were standard and N-Log, N-Log being the log version of the video color profile. (Again, check me on that). Maybe mooseman will chime in on her because I know he's using the Nikon platform.
For shorts, IG reels, tik-toks, etc. Those are all posted at 1080. So you could make a 1080 setting and then just turn the camera sideways. I tend to still shoot horizontal video at 4K. This gives me the ability to retain the horizontal video for longer form video or computer screens, but crop in a vertical at 1080. With Michaels footage, he's shooting at 8k, so we can crop even more.
I hope that makes sense... Let me know the follow ups!

@@TruthLegend thanks Brandon, this is very helpful. The SDL is the standard color and there is the n-raw.

So there N-raw is likely the raw version that would give you the most versatility if you're editing, but it will create a larger file size. Like much of photography there is always a compromise.
