Vanishing Act: The Challenge of spotting Ptarmigan in Alaska

Join wildlife cinematographer Eric Youngblood as he attempts to film ptarmigan before the snow melts and they transform into summer plumage. Their secretive behavior and stunning snow-white color means it will take a bit of luck to locate them. This mountainside is special since it hosts all three species, sometimes in remarkable proximity to each other, but finding them will be the challenge.

Nice Video, I to (being a wildlife filmmaker) totally understand the frustration of not seeing a thing sometimes. Ugh. Your exposure of the Ptarmigan and snow is exceptional. I'm curious what was your white balance? When I'm in snow I have at 6200 Kalvin.

Thanks for the kind words, I still feel like I have a lot to learn on the color side, but I’ve made enough mistake now to get by haha. These were shot at 6400k with a slight tweak in WB/tint. Nailing exposure in snow has been a learning curve for sure but (un)luckily we are just a few inches away from an all time seasonal record so it’s been all I’ve been shooting since October!
