Rare Sprinter Van Bought For Less Than A Month's Rent. Will It Start?
Does this explain why despite a fresh oil change, my oil is black? I've got a 2015 and debating if a wooshing tick noise I'm hearing is a bad injector, clogged exhaust, or something else.
usually a bad injector makes itself known with some white smoke coming out your tailpipe and or some low fuel pressure issues. unfortunately the combination of merely having an egr valve and the presence of backpressure from these modern exhausts (whether clogged or not) will generally cause your oil to run black more or less all the time. The way you can tell if your oil is really bad is the brown lining where the oil on the dipstick ends. if that area where the oil becomes transparent has a brown tint to it, it usually means that oil still has some life left in it. I generally encourage oil changes closer to 5k mile intervals instead of 10k
I do have a launch x431 pro dyno diagnostic tool to perform some tests if you can suggest any please?
DO you have low boost issues?
Admire your enthusiasm 👏
I have had the dreaded P029900 boost pressure too low code for over 2 years on my 2015 906 manual diesel sprinter. I have changed the inlet manifold , all sensors ,and valves , brake servo , vacuum pump , egr , both wastegate actuators . No leaks visible from smoke test . There are no signs of leaks . The 2 wastegate actuator arms do not move like they should after starting the engine . Are there any other tests I could perform? I’m going insane 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤬🤬🤬🤦🏼♂️🤣
I would measure the requested boost vs actual boost pressures in order to understand the real difference in values that is triggering the code. The only two things I can think of are turbo actuator, (visual check with someone reving the engine) and perhaps a clogged up exhaust. Unfortunately I am not super familiar with your engine configuration since here in the US we only have the 3.0 engine and some rare 2.1 an d 2.0 versions. But there has been a known issue of cracked plastic manifold on the 2.1 liter engine that causes a boost leak. Also consider ensuring you have an original MAF sensor (watch my maf video to see why this is important) best of luck
id drive on E right past this repair shop thats for sure ! sounds like they just make problems up ! and the main problem is the dpf systems. its funny how we have ti have dpf but the goverment orders all there vehicles factory deleted. ???????
yep yep. As soon as they start putting emissions systems on private jets and large diesel ships putting out 10x more emissions then vehicles, then I will agree with their "we all need to do our part" messaging.
EVERY modern diesel needs a minimum fuel level present, in order that the DPF regen function can start, when requested. Read your manual if unsure. I service/repair BMW diesels....
BMW just might be the one vehicle that is a little more complex then mercedes haha. Yep, thats pretty much it, active regen won't occur on low fuel and you can drive around on low fuel for weeks. I gotta admire those inline engines bmw diesel is still making. I almost bought a diesel x5 a year ago.
What a load of male cow facies, I have found the most of these problems are caused by 'cheapskates' using poor quality fuel
Another great video with awesome information! Thanks!
Thanks Harry, looks like you have been a subscriber for quite a while, glad you are enjoying the videos.
Thank you for all the great videos, PLEASE DO MORE! Our 4x4 sprinter club, Revel club, Revel forum (online) and overland clubs around the country ALWAYS have questions and 100’s of them! My first of a dozen questions is 1)We own a 2022 Winnebago Revel 4x4 144 and many times we need to let the van idle for charging our house batteries or running the Rv A/C for a short time and knowing that’s terrible to let it idle because of the EGR and the suffocating exhaust system: 1)Are there any options at all or additives or more frequent oil changes or removing the deaf fluid system altogether so we could let the van idle without constantly worrying about breaking something? 2)My van only has 4k or 5k miles and I noticed oil all over the driver side, front axle, suspension area and underneath the very bottom center of the van directly under the motor and it looks to be a yellowish oil and I can’t find where it’s coming from. I have no lights on the dash runs perfect oil is perfect and it’s been like this since I’ve owned it. It’s not too bad however I have an appointment next month to have it looked at since it’s under warranty, but do you have any ideas? I’ll attach a couple photos and I’ll save the other questions for after another video. Thank you so much. Well I guess I can’t attach images on UA-cam so?
Wow, you have the last 4x4 sprinter they will every make. I am sure that will hold value very well as there will always be those who prefer that over AWD. I am sure it drives like a dream with only 5k miles on it. Now let me see if I can answer your questions. First off I would recommend doing an oil change every 5,000 miles or so instead of the recommended 10,000. Does manufacturer still say 10k in the manual? I haven't checked in a while. When Idling I wouldn't be too concerned about the egr as much as I would about the dpf. If your van doesn't have a high idle option ( I am not sure what that looks like in the new body style) but I do talk about options anyone can do to idle their van just a little bit higher in my "five sprinter van hacks" video. getting that van idling just a bit higher should ensure your exhaust filter stays a little hotter and doesn't get clogged as easily. As far as doing exhaust modifications there are plenty of options out there but of course the concern is always around the legality if you live in the US. Hope this helps, the great news is that there are a few new products out there that will help charge off the alternator with up to 600+ watts of power and theyre getting more and more affordable so hopefully idling your van for long periods becomes something you will no longer have to do. On a more encouraging note, the emissions systems have improved over the years and they have gotten more reliable. But of course I understand when you are far from home and worried about your van throwing some error code
Random question, when you do oil change, I have two options: 1. Drain Old School from the bottom 2. Vacuum sanction over top Which one is better or gets the most oil out?
well I still drain from the bottom but I have been interested in getting something to suck it from the top, I suppose that would make for a good video. Given I have my little device that allows me not to have to remove any bolt to drain the oil I will continue to do it from the bottom. would be interesting to use a suction device as much as possible, and then remove the drain plug from the bottom and see if any more comes out.
I bought a non runner for 3k in 23. Had a leak in tank for that whole time. T1N. Today fuel pump was humming so loud you could hear it ten feet away. Always fueled up 4-5 gallons at a time. New fuel pump it’s like a whole new van. Now I can fill up my 27 gallon tank. 90$. 😢. I’ll keep it at half now.
well thats a damn good deal, t1ns are getting rarer and rarer in the USA, they arent my favorite but I do like how torquey they are
The sport van, I'd roller brush paint it, do a neat job and call it good 👍 Great video, thanks 😊
haha, take it down to mexico to get painted, I hear thats the place for inexpensive paint jobs, stay away from the roller brush haha
You are sean penn's kid, or could be. Check to make sure though.
thats very flattering. i am a foreigner though. immigrant to be exact haha.
thanks for this VIDEO! very helpful
Very very welcome!
Very interesting and useful. Definitely do that continental trip in a Sprinter with over three-quarters of a million miles... But why doesn't the US use the L1-4 / H1-3 designations as in a high-top 170" LWB being an L3H2? SImples... Then again you are still stuck with Imperial units too so! 🤣
haha good question, that would make things nice and simple. We don't even have the super short wheel base one over here in the new style. like the 128 wheelbase. ohh if only we got all the cool euro vans here.
thanks man
very very welcome, I didn't think this video would be useful but now it seems like everyone who searches for this topic is finding it.
I got 2011 retired FedEx for $10K 2 years ago with def delete done I've had no issues. Very reliable with 355K miles already. Came with aluminum shelving works great for my family flooring and remodeling business. We can easily load pallets of flooring or carpet, etc. Hoping to find a shorter model 4x4 for retirement someday
I hear certain Fedex vans are maintained very well. Perhaps the independent contractor fedex delivery vans could be a hit or miss. I believe they are labeled fedex "ground"... The good part is it likely has great maintenance history. The bad part is it is a bare bones vehicle with zero upgrades which likely doesn't matter for most of us. Sounds like you got a great van. Haha sounds like you have found a permanent solution to your emissions issues ;}
@sprinterfix good answer. yeah the dealer is from Romania. I was skeptical at first but my son and business partner talked me into it because we could stand up in it and overload it with tools and supplies for home improvement customers and to be so reliable for cheap. I guess FedEx gets all the bugs out of them for us. Hahaha
@ Yea, I have heard fedex does treat their vans quite well, the 2900 dollar van I bought was an old fedex van, unfortunately it was a fedex ground so I didn't luck out on good maintenance. ohh well.
@sprinterfix right ✅️ I actually liked the short wheelbase 4x4 for maneuvering on ice and snow and mud short wheelbase much better can't imagine it with a good turbo boost like this with 18mpg average
@@beyondappalachian8218 honestly if you don't need the space short wheelbase drive way better, they feel like a different vehicle, stiffer, tighter, I daily drove my short wheel base when I was in texas and didn't mind it one bit over there. some cities its a little too big for though. some years the rear differential was geared a little differently so they had more torque right off the bat but on the freeway they would average like 2700 rpms instead of the 2100 rpms others did. speaking of mileage, my 24 foot van averages like 23mpg even though its fully rigged out and weighed down.
While i agree that an extended 170" makes sense, there are cases where a short overhang makes sense. First is off-roading. The 170 might not be the best off-roader, but I find it can be surprisingly capable if there are no switchbacks. An extended tail really can get hung up pretty easily though. Trailer towing is another limitation. Only 3500 170 Sprinters with the short tail can be rated to tow 7500lbs. Even at 5,000 lbs on an extended Sprinter, there are cases of stress-cracks in bodies that town.
I couldn't agree more, off roading departure angles are better without the extended, so is towing, but honestly if you are towing anything the shorter one is likely a whole lot easier, better for off roading as well. I do suggest most people get a shorter one if they dont need all that room, they drive way better. Also, is this Bert Wilson from Clovis CA?
Stopped watching early on when hearing "2007, that was a good year...".
well, 2008 and 2009 might be the best years for new owners, upgraded wiring harness from 07 etcetera, I talk a bit about how some people misguidedly thing the 2004 to 2006 are the best years ever but thats later on.
The owners of the Chiefs have already stated they will never change the name of the Kansas City Chiefs.
Whelp, I guess I messed up that detail.
Thank you so much!!!
Very welcome! , your name suggests you own a Westfalia sprinter, is that the case?
I had a 1984 VW Westy. I restored it. But parts quality because terrible
@@kayakwesty I hear those are the vans to turn electric given they have simple manual transmission? ever thought about an electric conversion?
I made my 2008.look.better by going to a Mercedes blacked out grill. Thank you for the video : )
Yep, I have a blackout grill on my 2007, it really does make a difference.
I got 110k 2013 170” CT for 14$,lmk
That’s a pretty great deal. Did it get all the recall stuff done?
Love your vid, you are extremely informed, expecially for a young dude! Keep on U-tubing!
Thanks Jim. Glad you are finding the videos informative
but with the turbo leaks fix discovered my serpentine belt about to shred and was able to do it in like 30 minutes after watching many hours of videos with the engine out of the vehicle not roadside emergency shred
Super tough to show getting the belt on with the everything in place. Tried filming it half a dozen times. Let me know if u would watch that video
@sprinterfix of course you helped me discover O'Reilly sold me the wrong belt for 2011 3.0 .thanks again
haha. Ohh boi. Well I’m glad that video helped at least one person
@sprinterfix I bet you'd get lots of views if you did an emergency roadside serpentine belt replacement. I watched numerous videos and all of them showed with motor out of the sprinter.
Good idea with smoke test. I did test with 1.5 inch rubber plumbing cap attached with clamp to turbo air intake and valve stem works good also and use spray bottle with water and soap to find air bubbles in the system but doesn't test the pcv valve for leaks
that sounds like it could work if you already have a good approximation of where tour leak is, might be tough to spray down everything though, were you able to hold pressure?
@sprinterfix so far so good it was leaking mostly at cold hose but you're right with the smoke test would be better
Hi man I just subscribed, can you tell me your background? Thx
My family owned these vans growing up in eastern europe. Technically they were the older diesel mercedes and not yet called sprinters. I worked in a transmission/mechanic shop for a couple years. worked at a machine shop rebuilding engines for a stint. been fixing these vans myself for a little over 10 years. Have a bit of programming knowledge. how can I help?
@sprinterfix I own 2 sprinters, 05 and 03 . I'm just glad to have found you and your channel, would like to ask you at a later date about my 03, no start problem, thank you and welcome, best wishes on your chanel
@@mikejohnson7768 Thank You Mike
Great video!
thanks bud, glad you found it useful
Thanks for the video. Make more videos for scan tools for sprinter
I certainly could, It's kinda one of the few things I know a whole lot more about but getting into the technicals doesnt to be too interesting for people. what do you think could be most helpful around scan tools?
Dude! Awesome video! Thanks for the great visuals. I’ve noticed a strange burning odor and couldn’t figure out what flavor of engine fluid it was. I’m betting it’s the plastic from the cooler.
Hmm. I hope it is. Could also be some steering fluid. Transmission fluid stinks as well. Best of luck
This is a great video!!!! Thank you. Got a question, I put the key in, it made a weird racket, then stopped, key wouldn't turn. So now if I put the key in, it doesn't make the normal noise, but just a faint clicking sound. I tried both keys, and they both react the same way. Thank you so much for all the helpful information!!!!
That clicking sound is usually associated with a very dead battery. Hope it is something simple. Curious about what the real cause is so please keep me updated
@ I haven’t checked the battery voltage, it’s less than 6 months old. The headlights are bright. It wasn’t a clicking noise like the starter. Hopefully the weather holds out and I can tear into this weekend. Thanks again for all the helpful info!
@@95ffd very welcome. keep me updated
My 2008 threw some codes pointing at the EGR so I replaced it and it worked for about 100 miles then went back into limp mode. I did notice the oil everywhere so perhaps this is the actual problem. The previous owner did report problems “with the turbo” and had it replaced and then added a gauge to monitor turbo output (he was a pilot, the dashboard looks like I’m driving the space shuttle) but I’m still seeing these problems. Thanks for the video.
Check dpf. Also 100 percent need to ensure u are using original egr. Fake ones break after a week of use. Dpf will prevent turbo from spooling as well
@ copy that. Thanks. So….the cheap part I got on Amazon is worthless? The fact I bought car parts on Amazon tells you how mechanically inclined I really am.
@ welll. Some parts on Amazon are no good. Some are great. I try and pick the good ones to link but if one is suggest is terrible please let me know
@@sprinterfix will do. Thanks again
Lol no link and the product number isnt valid either place wth
Haha. Let me update that for ya. Older video. Didn’t realize it was still being watched
new subscriber thanks. Wish someone would do a video emergency serpentine belt replacement with the motor still in the van
Haha. I have about a dozen recordings of doing that which I’ve never posted. Hard to show it with the angles. I do have a belt video about sizing which is quite important. Let me see about uploading an install
@sprinterfix thanks the belt sizing video was priceless. Exactly like you said happened and they sent the wrong 1 for my 2011 3.0 so I found the right one at another store and didn't check the number on the belt and someone put the wrong belt in the right package sleeve. What a nightmare
Haha. Wonderful. Honestly I use the video to remind myself which belts to get when I go to the store cause I forget too haha
@@sprinterfix exactly 💯 got it on in about 30 minutes. Thank you so much
Does the boost leak always set a code? Because I’ve had limp mode twice without a code or check engine light. Dealer checked computer without anything showing.
yea, probably check my video out on my discussion of different limp modes. lots of things cause these vans to run bad. sometimes limp mode is a term that is used incorectly
Very helpful information. Thank you
Very welcome
First, thanks for all the super clear amazing videos! I have a question / Idea I'd love your thoughts on, or even if video. Problem(s); 1, air recirculation goes off after a few mins. 2, defrost is SO weak. 3, the fresh air vents are mostly not useful. What I'm thinking of doing is adding a manual control cap to the fresh air box and routing an air intake from the cabin (also with a manual control. This might solve the recirculation issue. I would also love to send conditioned air through those fresh air vents. Thoughts? Ideas?
When you say fresh air vents are u referring to the ones that point directly to the driver's face? I have noticed that the AC recirulation turns off after around 15 minutes on my 2007 and 2008, I assumed that was a featrure rather then a bug. Unfortunately I have not delved too deeply into this issue, But it is certainly a video I would watch if you made it :)
Bingo on your #1 problem area! Ironically I had just replaced everything on the front of the motor on my 110K mile major service.... belts, pulleys etc. I replaced the perfectly performing stock hose (#6 in your diagram) with an aftermarket hose. It lasted 4500 miles and split. Currently running the old original hose now!
do you by chance remember the brand of that aftermarket hose? I have had decent luck with aftermarket hoses but I'd love to know what to avoid.
My turbo resonator (part #10) separated at part #12 somewhere while going about 60 mph on the freeway. All the spooled up air escaped fast and loud like I had a flat tire. Basically you lose about 2/3rds of your power and I kinda coasted off the freeway. Oil was sprayed in the driver side of the cabin...not a crazy amount. Was able to drive home about 2 miles and had it fixed within 2 days after a flat bed tow. This is at around 20k miles.
I see, did it just pop off? was the rubber gasket torn? scary thing to hear if you aren't sure what it is I imagine
Thank you I just ran into this issue. You nailed it. I left the back bolt out on the turbo resonator when replacing the glow plugs. I decided to replace the resonator and seals going to the turbo. I am using the Torque app to monitor my boost levels and other sensors with a tablet mounted to the windshield while I drive. Can you make your smoke test video next? Thank you for making your videos.
Sure, I recorded a smoke test video months ago, just need to find that footage haha
yeah interested in the smoke test 👍🏼
Same here: smoke test!
ditto!
thats why i got a t1n(2006)
ohh boi, stay tuned, t1n video dropping soon, the good the bad and the ugly. haha, I feel like they are a little bit over rated.
@@sprinterfix Looking forward to that I have owned a T1N in Europe (France) for 22 years now.
@@SlimTortoise ahh wonderful. likely not the 5 cylinder engine no? Here in USA we only have 5 cylinder t1n and they have gotten so scarce they can cost upwards of 20k for ones with decent maintenance. That combined with an ever deminishing supply of used parts makes them a bad purchase for most. the minor convenience of better reliability is heavily countered by their over hypedness. I am sure the european market is better for these vans
@@sprinterfix Hi. It is the 5 cylinder one 2.7 which I have. At the time you had a choice here in Europe 2.7 or 2.1. (You paid extra for the 5 cylinder model, I paid €3000 more) The EGR and maybe a few other things were not fitted at that time, I think the US market had them fitted a few years before they were in Europe. Parts are not a problem here, Although they are shipped from Germany which for me is only 500 Kms away but they are available through all French outlets and good prices too. You don't see as many now on the roads but that is always the case with models that are not made anymore I guess. There seems to be more in the East of Europe. I have done all my servicing and repairs myself not that a lot has gone wrong to be fair, oil has been changed every 5000 Kms with new filters. which I think helps in my view.
@@SlimTortoise Interesting, everyone here prefers the 2.1 litre engine that they put in after 2014 as an option. sounds like you got it newish, I wouldn't suspect that would be such a costly upgrade. I imagine parts in europe are quite abundant. I heard a rumor that theyre still making the t1n vans somewhere in Poland. I do love the design, seems like the newest 2019+ chassis is trying to copy the look of the t1n haha
I have a 2011 passenger van that had a roof AC but I removed it. I still have the second AC compressor running with one of the drive belts and was wondering, is it possible to remove it or bypass it with the serpentine belt? I was kinda hoping to stash that second compressor as a backup in case my main one gets damaged. What are your thoughts?
Absolutely, your secondary compressor is running on the shorter belt. Just use a regular belt that is made for a sprinter without a compressor. They should all be the same size 2007 to 2018
I was a ca smog inspecter and checking the pcv valve from the crankcase is mandatory on every smog check.that being said people would pull up switch it take the test then switch it back lol😂so yea parole been doing this for along time
Interesting! the only time I smogged a sprinter in CA was back in 2018, I remember all he did was plug a scanner connected to a big machine and read off the sensor data and ensured there were no codes. unlike my gas vehicle there werent any dyno tests of any sort. May I ask the last year you did a smog test in CA?
Can you do the same thing with the TCM from a sprinter as well?
Not much need unless u replace the solenoids with blue tops. Check out legit street cars channel. The tcms are plug and play and not serialized to the vehicle the same way the ecu is. So u can order a tuned one if u are running upgrades on your valve body.
They do! always will be opositions And unknows theorical you are doing what your heart tell you The best of you 🎉
Is A good hack the one with the oíl filter but What if! Or may hpn ! Could be a Adventure in the mechanical World and $$$$$$
Yea. Not sure about that one. Feels pretty well glued on for my but I suppose it could come loose if they right stuff is t used.
I am interested in doing a tune on my t1n. Are you able to delete speed governor? Do you do anything to protect trans for power increase?
Don’t see part on link.
Have you tried the iCarSoft MB V3.0? How does it compare to the Delphi?
Yea. I had one of those. Not terrible. Delphi is better but not worth upgrading if u already have icarsoft.
