I've never been as lost as this!! Bikepacking on my Brompton in Sweden, into Småland, wild camping
I cycled and camped wild through the far south of Sweden, four days of gravel tracks and lovely quiet lanes. This film is the second part of this two-part series, and covers the ride from Skåne through the borderlands and into Småland. It was a brilliant journey! But on this section, I made a big mistake and got very lost!
So, this is a sort of "how not to do it" video...
It did give me a feel for just how wild and isolated it must have been in the old no-man's-land between old Denmark and old Sweden.
Hope you enjoy the film!!

Summer in deep south Sweden, four days of cycling gravel tracks, narrow lanes, wild camping

I took my Brompton on another cycling and camping adventure, this time in southern Sweden, with my trusty Hilleberg tent and little old Trangia stove. Responsible wild camping is legal here, and is a beloved part of life that everyone is encouraged to enjoy. There is loads of space. It's a joy to pitch quietly by a Swedish lake or in a wood, and sit there and listen to the birds and the wind in...

A couple of years ago, I made a film about the gear I use on Brompton bikepacking / cycle camping adventures. Since then I have a few new things. So in this film, I go on a one-night wild camp, and talk about what camping gear I'm using now and why - what is in my bags, my tent, sleeping set up, my faithful ancient Trangia stove and other cooking gear and my little larder, my chair, mini bathtu...

After ten days and 700km of cycling, I crossed into Denmark on my Brompton. Yay! I was just loving this whole journey, on a long-distance cycle tour again, free, and happy. I rode across the Danish countryside, camping "semi-wild", discovering Denmark's brilliant network of simple camp spots. This was my first time cycling in Denmark, and I really enjoyed it. I rode up Jutland, and across a cou...

I cycled to Sweden on my Brompton last summer. It was *brilliant* to be able to do a longer camping & cycling adventure again. The idea was to ride and meet up with my husband in Sweden (he is Swedish). This was the second section of the journey, through Germany. For cycling and camping, Germany was very different from the Netherlands. There were far fewer proper campsites in Germany, and I had...

I was about to set off on my Brompton and ride to Sweden in spring 2022 when I discovered that my breast cancer was back. Everything was put on hold whilst I was treated for that. In August, Dad and I thought we'd do a cycling holiday, and test out using Bromptons combined with local buses. Dad took up cycling in his 60s, doing local trips by bicycle instead of by car, hopping on the bike pretty much every day to nip the shops, or see friends. Now he's 87, and he's still out every day doing local errands by bike - riding 20 mins or so - as well as heading out on longer l...
Brompton Bikepacking Wild Camp. Hills! But I love hills! and sky, and space, & freedom, wild freedom

In May, I took my Brompton and my little tent and cycled through the Peak District, to go and see my Dad. There were a lot of hills - and quite a lot of inquisitive cows - along the way. I camped wild, close to Axe Edge Moor, high up at the watershed of two great river systems. And it was fantastic. Hills aren't easy, but I love them. Especially these hills, close to where I grew up. On this trip, I rode my Brompton from London to Bedford, doing about 100 miles in total, over two and a bit days, camping wild. I had two gorgeous wild camp nights, one high up in the hills at the eastern end of the Chilterns, and one in the valley of the Great Ouse, in a Cambridgeshire wood. An old schoolfriend of mine lives in Bedford, and the idea was to go for lunch, doing the journey on my...

In early March, I decided it was time to see some proper hills again, so I took my Brompton and my tent, and cycled through North Wales. But the reward for battling the weather was being out there,...

I did this Brompton bikepacking wild camp adventure in late November, when the sunset was at 4pm, and it was cold. Not an obvious time to go on a cycle tour perhaps, but I wanted to see late autumn, when the last leaves are on the trees and the landscape is almost bare. Hi Susanna.... really love your videos. You're a truly inspirational person to such an extent I've dug out my old Brompton with a view to doing some (extremely easy comparatively) camping trips.... In one of your expeditions I recall you put together a small chair with what looked like tent poles. I wonder if you could tell me the brand please?

      Hi Mickey! thanks for writing! glad you enjoy the films. About the small chair, it's a Helinox Zero chair. I bought a couple of years ago. LOVE it. Not cheap! but omg to me it has been totally worth its weight and price, I use it all the time, so lovely to get somewhere and flip out a comfy chair and sit back and relax. I have also got a Decathlon chair, similar, much cheaper. It is bulky and heavy in comparison to the Helinox, but I have it to loan to friends when we go for a ride together esp day ride etc. OK esp for just a day ride whhen not carrying too much other clobber. Hope you enjoy some great camping trips! Took me a bit of fiddling to get a good set up sorted, cos you gotta go minimal with everything, as there's less luggage capacity on a Brompton than on a "normal" bike, but it works really well - and you can still make camping really comfy and enjoyable with chairs and whatnot haha

    Biking like this is not without risks. I tried this in a far more comfortable setting. But I felt so vulnerable, ran out of water and food, exhausted in the hot day. hello John! aw thanks for the lovely comment. I also love that film haha. I also rewatch it and it makes me happy. I love that Life in the Fast Lane track. Anyway, about my overshoes well actually they were cheap like literally £5, unknown brand, made in China, got them on amazon 7 years ago, not knowing what to expect really, but I wanted something simple, properly waterproof ie just bog standard plastic, and looser than some of the pukka cycling overshoes I had seen, cos I was gonna be putting them on over clompy shoes. They have been fantastic. I just stick them together again with duct tape whenever they rip. I have cut holes in the bottom to use them with SPDs. I looked on amazon just now and there are kind of similar things you could try, if really cheapo is your thing haha. Hope that helps! thanks for watching!

In two weeks time I am cycling down to Dover across to Dunkirk and then cycling unsupported up the French, Belgium coast across the Netherlands to Germany on my Thorn Bike. I have a small bag of fairy dust and on reaching Germany will empty it into the wind to see what magic the rest of my journey brings. During my planning was watching your Sweden films that always inspire me. I am raising funds for Sarcoma UK from friends and family for my journey on a Just Giving Page, just goes to show the benefits your films have for others. Hi Susanna, I’ve been watching your videos for a few years now and you are quite the inspiration, thank you. Is your Brompton a C-line with 6 gears? I think you used to have a C-line 3 gears.

    • @susannathornton
      @susannathornton 7 днів тому

      Hi Darren! it's a 3 speed C line. 6 speed are also good, also ridden 6 speed. But I chose 3 speed because this bike has gotta deal with all sorts of dust, dirt, sticks getting tangled in, banging on things etc I want things simple, less to go wrong and need sorting out on the road. I lowered all 3 gears by putting on a 38T chainring. Sometimes I spin out or cant get on top of a gear. But no big deal, I am not racing. I got one gear low enough to stay on the bike and climb pretty much anything, one for steady riding, and one for downhill with the wind on smooth tarmac. Aw dunno, maybe! But no use if no maps downloaded and no signal right! that was the mistake I made. I use Komoot sometimes, and Bikemaps too, and a few others eg OsmAnd. I havent done like a massive research comparing them or anything but just from general use of these and some other apps eg the OS app for the UK, I find the different systems each have some good features and some features I dont like... Re Komoot, I liked some aspects of it but I really didnt like that I couldnt access the base maps I like and I am familiar with eg OpenStreetMap or the Swedish national mapping agency maps. Maybe that was because I didnt subscribe or something? I just used the free Komoot version, so perhaps I didnt get some premium features... sounds like you like it and prob know miles more than me about it! The thing is in Sweden, the Swedish national mapping agency maps are free, so I am not keen to pay for things that I can get for nothing... All I needed to do really on this ride in sweden was to have downloaded the map onto their app! that was the mistake I made...

    Hi Susanna! I have recently found this channel (YT had recommended it to me , thank you YT!) and I found it fascinating to watch your adventures. I live in Hörby, in Skåne and it’s fun to watch your bike trip through the region. About your struggles with maps, do you use MinKarta app? I’d recommend it if you don’t. It’s from Lantmätteriet and it’s much better than google maps, it has all the little paths.

    Well done! Phew, a bit scary getting lost. Is the Brompton comfy for long distance travel?

    • @susannathornton
      @susannathornton 17 днів тому

      Hi Veronica! thanks for watching! yeah well small wheels are a bit bumpy on gravel, and hopeless if you come across thick newly laid gravel, but otherwise I find the Brompton v comfortable for short or long distance travel, eg 3 weeks. Nice riding position. Handles really well. On a normal road tarmac etc you dont really feel any difference between the Brompton and a big-wheel touring bike. The only thing is that on a really long distance journey, several months etc, I would probably want to carry more gear eg clothes for different season, spare shoes, maybe a laptop, a whole bag of pills and medication (for me!!), and on a Brompton (or prob most small wheelers) there is limited luggage space. On the Brompton, I just have two pannier bags, plus a fairly small saddle bag, so I need to pare my gear down to the bare bones. On a standard touring bike, I'd have loads more room, four panniers, stuff on top of a rear rack, plus a front bar bag. See my set up for riding Hong Kong to London, under the "longer journeys" section of my channel! I used a converted cyclo cross bike for that journey, was pretty much perfect. ANyway, long answer! thank you for watching! Best wishes!

Found a great spot then a longer search for my pack.. lol.. It turned out not to be that far away but I had gotton disorientated. so was all over the place looking for it.

      even without a compass, it's about mid day, so keeping the sun on your back helps you going aprox north, at the very least keeps you from going around in circles ;-)

    • @susannathornton
      @susannathornton 15 днів тому

      Hi Sally! thanks for watching! ah that yellow rain cape was made by my husband, copying a worn out one that I had loved. The old one was made by Raleigh, bought online and cheap as chips, but great. I think they dont make them anymore. I have another cape, from a brand called Didriksons, which is great, really light and dries v fast but I just looked and cant see it on their website now... so that is a pity. It seems quite hard to find a good cycling cape. glad you like watching the films. Sorry the cape side of things not much help!!

    • @susannathornton
      @susannathornton 10 днів тому

      Hi Amy! I think I might try it, I have a tiny keyring compass actually, just that would be good as a back up... I really learned my lesson here! I'll always download maps now. But then I could lose my phone... or I guess the phone battery and all power banks run out, or the phone could just break etc... so youre right it is still good to have back ups!

    Great video! I remember reading about a mother and ten year old daughter who got lost in the forest on the Black Isle north of Inverness. They spent a cold night in the woods until they found a way out. Can you wild camp responsibly anywhere in Sweden?

    • @susannathornton
      @susannathornton 13 днів тому

      oh that sounds terrifying, especially with a child and everything... About wild camping in Sweden, yes they have a thing called allemansrätten Right of Public Access according to which you can wild camp responsibly, kind of anywhere, in line with the rules eg not near a house and of course not around farmers' crops or animals and of course not damaging anything etc etc. At some public swimming spots, like the one I was at in this film, the local authorities allow camping, and at some they dont allow it. There is more about it all here in case you want it visitsweden.com/what-to-do/nature-outdoors/nature/sustainable-and-rural-tourism/the-right-of-public-access/

    "Oh Susanna!" as the song says!! It's not about never getting lost - it's about how you cope with the situation, and you coped brilliantly. I've been lost in the past, once on an evening walk in Wales, trying to get back to the caravan where my husband and children were, and it was getting dim and I did start to panic. And trying to find my way through busy towns - Wolverhampton and Swindon! But when you find your way after all that, you know you have achieved something - and you certainly did! I did my first wild camp by bike last week, and honestly, many times I thought - "What would Susanna do?" !! Thank you soooo much for sharing this with us!
