This channel is mainly about journeys by bike, mostly wild camping by Brompton. Some of my bikepacking journeys are short - 1-night cycle camps close to home, or 3-4 day journeys. Others are longer, eg 6-weeks through Sweden, which is my husband’s country, and 6-months from Hong Kong to London - cycling home was a nice thing to do after working in Asia for several years. Mostly I don't ride specific 'cycle routes', but I make a cycle camping trip out of journeys I want to do anyway, going to see friends & family, slowly. I love seeing "ordinary" places - taking maps & plotting a route through whatever lies between me and my destination. Everywhere is interesting. Sometimes I ride with other people. But mostly alone. I realise quite a lot of people think I'm mad or strange to be doing this - too old, a woman etc - and that it must be hard. So I thought I’d film the journeys, to show people why I like doing them, and to show that it’s mostly not hard at all. Thank you for watching!
Last leg of this 850km ride! Brompton cycling & 'primitive' camp south Denmark, Eurostar etc home
This is part three of my journey from Sweden back to England. This film covers my bikepacking adventures cycling & camping through southern Denmark, which was the last leg of the ride from my husband's cottage. I also cover my train journey back to England. The trains worked out really well - so brilliant with a Brompton, that you can hop on board without hassle or extra cost. I took German trains from Flensburg via Hamburg and Köln to Brussels, and then Eurostar from Brussels to London. Hope you enjoy the film!
About the old Danish poem I chose to include, I didn't like the English translations that I found online, so I translated it myself, kind of as I felt like I wanted it to be...! Bear in mind that I don't know Danish! I mainly guessed based on Swedish, which I do know, and looked words up. So yeh, it is kind of loosely done... It was very kind of the owner of the Rectory at Over Randlev to invite me in, and talk with me about her house and its past. What a nice person. I was surprised to find later that very few of Steen Steensen Blicher's poems seem to have been translated into English (or Swedish) at all. I hope someone brilliant will get onto it. 'Bird of Passage' looks like a lovely set of poems and this one just fitted my mood.
Thank you for watching! Hoping 2025 brings you lots of good moments, big and small!

Free & easy Brompton bikepacking through Denmark, using "primitive camp spots"

In autumn, I bikepacked with my Brompton folding bike from my husband's cottage 850km (it turned out to be!) across Sweden and Denmark, then hopped on a train at the German border, and zoomed back to London. I bought my rail ticket in advance, but otherwise planned the route loosely, giving myself 11 days plus 2 days contingency. Nice to feel free and easy. I love cycle camping tours like this,...
Had my Brompton with me, so why not ride it home - 700km Sweden & Denmark, train to London in 1 day

After spending summer together with my husband in Sweden, I was heading back to England. I had my Brompton and my tent with me, and saw that you can go by train in a single day from the Danish/German border to London. So I decided to ride a new 700km route through Sweden and Denmark, exploring two big, wild Scandinavian regions I had not seen before, and then fold up the bike, and hop on a trai...
Bromptons, trains & buses - Dad is back! a summer cycling holiday in Norfolk

This was a holiday using Brompton folding bikes, combined with trains & buses. We used trains and buses to get out of town, and cycled in the country lanes hunting out places we wanted to see. We both love history "treasure hunt" type holidays, and cycling is such an enjoyable way to get around. Planning a holiday like this is not hard really, but it does take a bit of research. The trains were...
I've never been as lost as this!! Bikepacking on my Brompton in Sweden, into Småland, wild camping

I cycled and camped wild through the far south of Sweden, four days of gravel tracks and lovely quiet lanes. This film is the second part of this two-part series, and covers the ride from Skåne through the borderlands and into Småland. It was a brilliant journey! But on this section, I made a big mistake and got very lost! So, this is a sort of "how not to do it" video... It did give me a feel ...

I took my Brompton on another cycling and camping adventure, this time in southern Sweden, with my trusty Hilleberg tent and little old Trangia stove. Responsible wild camping is legal here, and is a beloved part of life that everyone is encouraged to enjoy. There is loads of space. It's a joy to pitch quietly by a Swedish lake or in a wood, and sit there and listen to the birds and the wind in...

A couple of years ago, I made a film about the gear I use on Brompton bikepacking / cycle camping adventures. Since then I have a few new things. So in this film, I go on a one-night wild camp, and talk about what camping gear I'm using now and why - what is in my bags, my tent, sleeping set up, my faithful ancient Trangia stove and other cooking gear and my little larder, my chair, mini bathtu...
Long-distance cycling & camping on a Brompton. So happy!! Denmark!

After ten days and 700km of cycling, I crossed into Denmark on my Brompton. Yay! I was just loving this whole journey, on a long-distance cycle tour again, free, and happy. I rode across the Danish countryside, camping "semi-wild", discovering Denmark's brilliant network of simple camp spots. This was my first time cycling in Denmark, and I really enjoyed it. I rode up Jutland, and across a cou...
Cycling 1000km to Sweden on my Brompton. Camping in Germany was interesting!

I cycled to Sweden on my Brompton last summer. It was *brilliant* to be able to do a longer camping & cycling adventure again. The idea was to ride and meet up with my husband in Sweden (he is Swedish). This was the second section of the journey, through Germany. For cycling and camping, Germany was very different from the Netherlands. There were far fewer proper campsites in Germany, and I had...

I was about to set off on my Brompton and ride to Sweden in spring 2022 when I discovered that my breast cancer was back. Everything was put on hold whilst I was treated for that. Finally in June 2023, more than a year later than planned, I packed my tent and stove onto my Brompton bike, and super excited and happy, and sooo thankful and feeling so fortunate - more than I know how to say - I se...

In August, Dad and I thought we'd do a cycling holiday, and test out using Bromptons combined with local buses. Dad took up cycling in his 60s, doing local trips by bicycle instead of by car, hopping on the bike pretty much every day to nip the shops, or see friends. Now he's 87, and he's still out every day doing local errands by bike - riding 20 mins or so - as well as heading out on longer l...

In May, I took my Brompton and my little tent and cycled through the Peak District, to go and see my Dad. There were a lot of hills - and quite a lot of inquisitive cows - along the way. I camped wild, close to Axe Edge Moor, high up at the watershed of two great river systems. And it was fantastic. Hills aren't easy, but I love them. Especially these hills, close to where I grew up. On this trip, I rode my Brompton from London to Bedford, doing about 100 miles in total, over two and a bit days, camping wild. I had two gorgeous wild camp nights, one high up in the hills at the eastern end of the Chilterns, and one in the valley of the Great Ouse, in a Cambridgeshire wood. An old schoolfriend of mine lives in Bedford, and the idea was to go for lunch, doing the journey on my...

In early March, I decided it was time to see some proper hills again, so I took my Brompton and my tent, and cycled through North Wales. I aimed for a mix of wild camping, campsites and a YHA hostel over the 4 days. Not everything went to plan.... The weather was wild! I was very glad I had my rock-solid Hilleberg tent - and earplugs. But the reward for battling the weather was being out there,...

Big send!! Very impressive doing it so long ago. Making 37 year old me feel like a wimp hahaha! I'm keen to get some miles across the UK this summer
Sorry to hear about the copper. Glad to see you managed to carry on with positivity
Hi Susanna, I’m a co-founder of a new folding bicycle startup brand, and we would like to send you one of our products for testing and experience. If you’re interested, could you let me know how I can find your contact information so that I can send you a formal invitation email? Thank you!
Hello my beautiful Susanna! Thanks❤️ From Cucuta city Colombia 🇨🇴 South America
Susanna, I have a question. What breaks down most often on this bike and how many times have you had the wheels trued?🙂... All the best in the New Year
Hello! nothing has "broken down" on any Brompton I have had actually. I just deal with normal wear and tear - I replace tyres after they wear thin and get too many nicks and cuts, I mend punctures occasionally (doesnt happen often after I started using Schwalbe marathon plus tyres), I put on new brake blocks when they wear out, and I once changed a brake cable which had got "sticky" due to corrosion between the wire and the housing - it happens in the bend of the brake wire where water pools a bit. Apart from that I should replace the drive train soon ie put on new chainring, chain and rear sprocket, which is all part of managing normal wear and tear - they are all pretty worn now, but I am being lazy and not doing it for now. It all still works, keep going. I did have one second-hand Brompton a few years ago that had a knackered Sturmey Archer five-speed hub (sic, rare old things), slipped all the time whatever you did to try and tune it. It was from a batch of hubs SA made in the late 1990s when SA was in trouble and apparently their machine tools were worn out and the gear parts poorly machined. About the wheels, I have never trued the wheels, and they are fine, spoke tension fine, never had any probs. I have trued wheels on other of my bikes 700c road bikes and track wheels etc in my time. Anyway, that's all! Sods law now I will have some catastrophic failure! But basically my experience is that the Brompton is a really well made, low maintenance, reliable bike
@@susannathornton Thank you for your reply and I wish you many more years of trouble-free riding on this wonderful bike🙂
Thank you Susanna for a beautiful series of films. I find your attitude to life very inspiring. The obvious joy you experience from the things you see and do, makes each journey you share a perfect antidote to the trials of daily life. I hope 2025 gives you lots of pleasure and adventure.
Hi Susanna! Today, I discovered the channel and your trip feels inspiring! I love your pretty Orange Bike. I will see more videos to learn more about bickepacking! I send you good vibes to continue with the trip. Regards from Montevideo, Uruguay (South America) 🇺🇾 Nacho
With 87 years old still biking? God bless him!
I absolutely love the films of your journeys. You are such an inspiration to me in that you make it seem doable, even for someone like me. Thank you also for the introduction to Blicher.
I’d not seen this video, and for some reason, knowing your backstory a bit, it made me rather emotional. You’re hardcore Susannah - weathering some of the worst spring weather Wales could throw at you. I’ve noticed that Anglesey has a different microclimate to the mountains - it’s often a lot sunnier there and you can look back over Snowdonia and see all the dark clouds over the peaks. So glad you made it and enjoyed it xx
Aw thanks Lou, glad you like it! yeah after black terror and some hard times, I was jsut so happy to be back out, and able to attempt something like this... that "in this rush" music track "I thought my days were over" fitted just perfectly for me, makes me emotional to watch it too. It is prob my favourite film that I have made, I watch it sometimes myself to feel good. Thank you for writing
a bit late to the party but I've been very busy so just catching up with my videos now 😊 Another wonderful adventure we've had the privilege to come along with you on Susanna! Can't wait to see where you end up in 2025!
We absolutely love your videos. We always look forward to them. It’s always a special moment that we set aside time for. Kinda like a movie date ❤ it’s on our bucket list to get to Europe and do some bike trips of our own.
Hi Angela! aw thank you for the lovely comment! Glad you enjoy the videos! aw that is sweet, a movie date! hope you have had a good start to the year. Hope you'll be able to do some nice local rides there where you are too
Love your videos Susanna, you truly seem like a wonderful human.! What do you make of the G Line for your ventures, will you be investing or are they too heavy and unnecessary I wonder ?
Hi Susanna .. i just finished watching the three videos of your trip from Sweden back to London .. another fantastic, wonderfully paced set of videos. It's always a pleasure to come along on your trips. Thank you for posting. Every Best Wish for 2025. Nigel, Belfast, Ireland.
Hi Nigel! aw glad you enjoyed them! Best wishes for 2025 to you too!
Apart from the heavy rain on the way to the train, you’ve been blessed again with the weather on this tour. Thank you for the wonderful poetry. ❤
Hello! aw thank you. Yeah I was really lucky with the weather on that trip, doesnt really matter what happens on the last day does it! glad you enjoyed the film x
I’ve just watched your video - what a joy. Somehow, while immersed in the story, I forget that not only have you spent time looking for wild camp sites and the perfect bakery cafe, but you’ve also been spending time setting up shots and filming your journey and narrative along the way. It must take quite a bit of time, especially when you’re on a schedule to catch a train. Anyway, thank you. I’ve learnt a lot about how you use your Brompton for bike touring, and keep your set-up simple, but with a few luxuries that work for you - and would work well for me I suspect (Im thinking decent tent, trusty Trangia, seat and flask). Im guessing you spend the summer (or a chunk of it) with your husband in Scandinavia, and the winter in London. I could really relate to your “shock” of the transition from deep cycle touring to being propelled back into city life quickly. It’s quite an adjustment!
Hi Lou! thank you for the lovely comment! aw it's no big deal, cos I dont do any fancy shots that take a lot of time, eg no drone or anything. I just talk to the camera like it is a friend. Oh you put it brilliantly about a simple set-up plus a few luxuries - a fantastic tent, a Trangia with a decent set of pans so I can do proper cooking, a comfy seat, and a flask. And that is it, I am happy, more than happy. Thanks for writing!
😂 Susanna u are so strong, brave and capable. Good on you, so very happy for you. Love every moment of your adventures 💕 😊
Wow Susanna - you did my country such an honor to visit like this, appreciate it and speak so kindly about it. Happy that you liked our beloved heavy “Rugbrød” (rye bread), only done right in DK and it tastes goooood. When Danes go abroad this is always what they long for the most 😄 As always I thoroughly enjoyed this journey along with you and I really want to go biking now!! And may I just say that I love your choice of music always - somehow you find simple songs that spreads exactly the right mood for your enjoyable rides. Thank you and all the best from Copenhagen! 🙏😃🇩🇰
Hello! aw thank you for the lovely comment. Thank you for having me! As you see, I really enjoyed visiting Denmark. Mmh, I really want to eat some tasty bread now haha. Happy New Year!
Another great video Susanna, thank you for making it and sharing your journey.
Another wonderful adventure and I thank you for sharing it with us all!! Beautiful! Kerry in the way up North West of Wisconsin, US
Thanks Kerry! best wishes!
Battled across Dartmoor (snow) and Bodmin moor (torrential rain) yesterday in my van to arrive in Truro where I’m working at the museum over the next couple of months. I just enjoyed your video drinking my morning coffee before work in the lodgings. So nice to see your lovely optimistic tour in mainly nice weather and light days. What a tonic for this dull old time of year where the land is totally scoured. i once tried painting in a field of cows… Big mistake! first they crowded round, blocking the view and then proceeded to lick all my kit. Not art lovers but certainly curious! Looking forward to your next tour. This one was great. X
Haha oh no that sounds like a tricky painting with the cows. Makes me feel better, in a way, about thinking cows might lick me! the thing was that friends of mine have had a lot of trouble with cows licking their parked car, and as soon as I saw the cows in that field I was thinking about that. And they are probably very nimble things but I imagined them stumbling in the guy lines etc... Glad you made it safely across the west country, crikey that sounded scary and hard. But two months in Truro sounds brilliant, esp working at the museum. I just found you on Insta. OMG so lovely what you do, those waves... and I love the axe heads! and of all the old buildings and street scapes... Happy New Year! looking forward to see what you do next too!
@ Ah, it’s a busy time indeed. Just driven to Oxford and back today too! Honestly, Susanna, I’ve not known as busy a time as this for ages. Anyway, thanks for your kind comments about the art work too. Much appreciated. X
Firstly, Happy New Year to you. All three videos were lovely and after seeing the camping spots available it's something other countries should consider. The weather here hasn't encouraged much cycling but Spring is on its way 👍, even if it doesn't seem like it today. Have you started to think of camping trips for 2025 or is it a bit too soon? Thank you for all the hours of entertainment your channel gives.
Hi Colin! thanks for writing! Aw feel like I am always thinking of cycling and camping trips haha. Thank you for watching and for writing such great comments this past year! Lots more films coming and hopefully lots more adventures, keep going!... Happy New Year to you too!
Loving your content, Susanna! I really like how you look into there history of some of the places you visit and are able to not only entertain your audience, but educate us as well. One thing that I'm interested in is how you go about filming your trips. What cameras do you use? Do you have a separate microphone?
Hi Jim! aw thank you for the lovely comment. Glad you enjoy the films. About how I film, I sometimes film using my phone, which is a google pixel, but mainly use a Gopro Hero Black 9. When I started, I had a Gopro Hero 7. It had poor sound quality and poor stabilisation. The 9 is hugely better than the 7. I shoot in 1080p resolution. About sound, I use the sound from the Gopro. I use a windslayer spongy housing on the Gopro to keep the wind noise down. I dont have a separate microphone. It is quite tricky on the road keeping it all going and setting things up, and I dont want any more bits like extra microphone to faff with unless they seem to me really worth it. I am a kind of make do person. And at the limit managing the set up I have got! Hope that helps! thank you for watching! Best wishes!
@@susannathornton That's extremely helpful, Susanna! I think you're doing a brilliant job with that minimal setup. A couple of follow up questions if you don't mind - do you use a mount for the GoPro and lastly, what editing software do you use?
@@jimpannell2035 hi again! I use GoPro own brand ball joint swivel mount, on the handlebars. And Adobe premiere pro
Fantastic, to see Part3 of your epic journey, Susanna. Like so many have already said, the viewer becomes your companion through your trials, tribulations and joys. You must have a huge sense of personal accomplishment! What started for me as simply watching a fellow Bromptoneer, has now developed into sharing your own personal journey. Thank you, so much. Where to next?
Aw thank you for watching John, and for the lovely comment. Aw I don't know, it's nice of you to say so, but I don't think of these fun days out as an accomplishment, tbh! I feel more that it's a privilege - to have the time to do them, and the resources, and health, and freedom from caring responsibilities and all sorts of things like that. The older I get and the more I know, the more I realise it! if you want to do something and you can, then start now, do it now. And do it small, if small is what is feasible, dont wait for a big dream one day. Just start with what you have, and where you are... I think that's what I have the sense of... Oh, I'm getting all philosophical here! Happy New Year!
What kind of folding chair do you use, and bring? I only saw a part at a time? Your translation of Blicker is fine and he also wrote Novels. One about a falsely accused murderer, "Præsten i Vejlby". Finn. Denmark
Hi Finn! thank you for writing! About my camping chair, it is Helinox Zero. Brilliant piece of kit. Not cheap, but I find it is absolutely worth the price, and worth the weight to carry it. I also have a Decathlon one, much cheaper, which I take along for "guests", if I am cycling with a friend and we want to go and sit somewhere. About Blicher, I thought he was really interesting. I thought the Trækfuglene poems were lovely. I could just about manage to understand them, quite short! and relatively easy. I am not sure I can manage to read a novel which is a pity!🫤
I will never understand the European fear of…of all animals….COWS! 🤣 The most unthreatening, bucolic of animals, to be afraid of cows will never not crack me up. 🤣
You are such a inspiration. Thank you so much. I want to try it this year. But I am a little bit scared because of the brakes and going down steep hills with this brakes. Most areas have hills. And it does not feel comfortable for longer distances with these handlebares . On your green, old brompton you had butterfly handlebars. Now you don't. Is there any reason for it? Maybe these handlebars could be an option for me so my body comes a little bit higher and straighter? My handlebar is the M size. Lots of greetings from the south of Germany
Hi Katja! thanks for writing! Hope you can get out and enjoy riding your bike this year! If you are worried about your brakes, I suggest you take the bike to a bike shop, and ask them to give the bike a check. If the brakes are set up properly, there's no need to be scared. Ask the mechanics to tell you which is the front brake and which is the back brake. Use the back brake more when you're cycling. Practise going down a few hills. Take it at your own pace. You dont need to go fast if you dont want to. Then you'll feel more confident, and off you go... exploring the world!
Thankyou so much Susanna for this finale. All your videos have been amazing and my partner and I are looking forward to retracing your route thru Jutland this year.
Hi Tim! oh that sounds brilliant. There are hundreds of camp spots to try out, loads of really tempting ones... I wonder what the Jutland west coast would be like, someone on here said it is a whole different landscape... And there is the "old army road" that sounds great and very interesting... hope you have a brilliant time!
So nice to c another beautiful trip and ur happy face. Hv a wonderful year.
What a marvelous trip,Susanna😲 i live mostly in Århus,a bit in Ålborg and my only transport is bike and train. If there's another trip thru Jutland for you,you might take the old 'hær-vejen' directly translated to 'army-road'... it's for hikers and bikers, with tent/bivy/tarp only,it goes from northern Germany to northern Jutland. There are quite a few cafe's/restaurant's and shelter/camping spaces/places along the route and no(NO) cars, lots of nature and kind/friendly people aswell! And plenty of sightings (church-museum-nature). Happy cikling,'break a bone' 🤗🇩🇰🚴
Thanks for writing Lars! The old 'hær-vejen' sounds great. I remember I saw an old bridge a year ago right in the south of Denmark which was part of that old road. It is very interesting how it goes all the way into Germany. I like the sound of those cafes too!
Hey Susanah ! We so love your films . Trials and tribulations but the best parts are where you dig deep and thrive😊❤
Maravillosa Susana, he disfrutado cada km... gracias.
Thank you Susanna for a perfect start to the New Year. I always love how intrinsically honest, humble and inspirational your journeys are. I look forward to 2025!
I so enjoyed this episode. Thank you, Susanne, this is brillant!!
I for one, can totally relate to time lost searching for a bakery. Thank you for another really interesting, beautiful adventure. Best wishes for continued good health and happy travels in 2025. ❤
Hi Richella! aw thank you for your lovely comment, haha yeah I knew in my mind exactly what I was looking for, it just kind of took over. Maybe I have a bakery addiction. I realise that you volunteer with local wildlife organisations - me too, feel like we have loads in common, nice, not just the bakery thing haha!
@susannathornton Yes I think we'd get along grand. x

Many thanks Susanna. I realy enjoy your simple trips. Your cooking always looks inviting too. Have great 2025 and hope your health continues to improve. Best Wishes, Colin

I get to see again places I know and love, and how beautiful it all is. Sig nærmer tiden is one of my favourite poems/songs 😊thank you so much for sharing!💖💖
Very nice
Moesgaard is a Museum with an absurd amount of iron-age weapons, from the famous "Illerup Find" in a Sacred Moor. An invading Army lost and paid the price and at least a part of their weapons naturally became sacrificed to the Holy Powers in the moor, for their help! We have many more Roman swords found in Denmark than in the rest of the Roman Empire at all, and far from all have been excavated, but are left to later times!! It is also the place to see one of the most famous and well-preserved Danish, Moor Bodies: "The Grauballe Man"! Finn. Denmark
As you say “ BRILLIANT!”. Thanks for sharing the adventure.
thx for another road trip, here in the cold Danish winter. its funny how small the world is sometimes, you where close to my favorite tour gøteborg jønkøping kalmar. did it 3 times last summer. komoot is a very good free cykle app to get around in cities.i use it on a garmin that holds power for a very long time. thx again for a little summer.
nice with a bit of summer. i am from denmark and started many times from the same spot as you in malmø. only 3-4 month now for season start :)
Thank you again for sharing your journeys which I always enjoy. THankyou also for introducing me to the beautiful words of Steen Steensen Blicher. Happy New year to you! I hope 2025 turns out to be a wonderful year for you.
Shade that You miss Christiansfeld. You would have loved i.
Aw I wish I had gone there, sounds really interesting!
Susanna, I love your videos. You are so inspirational. We watch as an adult family. I hope one day to get my autistic son to enjoy cycling but he’s afraid of traffic
Hi Brenda! thanks for writing! Glad you guys enjoy the films, that is so nice. Working on the next one now! I hope your son can find a way of cycling or find some other outdoors activity that suits him and gives him pleasure
@@susannathornton we are looking forward to the next video. I can’t wait to get a short camp out in. Hopefully won’t be too long
Verry inspirational, I'm planning my first bikepacking trip this summer and watching these videos is great fun
Dear Susanna, the places you cross are beautiful, but the most beautiful thing about your videos is always your willingness to face difficulties, be they rain or cows... It's nice to see how in this way you can enjoy small and simple, but precious things. And the final poem is deep and touching. thank you for everything!
Aw Maurizio thank you for writing. Aw very mild and gentle difficulties, these on the road, just part of rolling along, so lucky, with time and freedom and health to do what I want. I am just grateful that I can do this at all. I saw a photo this morning actually, of me two years ago, and I was bald from chemo, and I was shocked to see myself like that with no hair! you forget dont you, in a way. Everyone has got things they are dealing with. And these little things, like riding in the rain, are not difficult at all really if you know what I mean. . Thank you for watching and for the lovely comment!
