A lovely cycle and adventure Susanna 🤗 Plenty of laughs, good and bold food and lovely scenery along the way! Nice to have company to share in it all too!! Roll on Wales 🤗😎 x
Hi Miriam… if you need somewhere to stay on your Cathedrals tour (one I’d like to do!), and/or a bit of company I have spare bedrooms. I’m in Nottinghamshire and can access the Southwell, Derby, Leicester sections. Happy to pick you up and re-drop you to stop/start point, so please just PM me! That applies to you too Susanna, of course!!! Have fun x
Aw thanks Miriam! Yeh bold food haha that is a great way of putting it 😁 we sent a pic of our chips and burger lunch to my husband and he said hmm the only green thing he could see was the serviette haha xx
It was only a couple of days ago that I realised I hadn't seen any new videos from you for a while, and I hoped that everything was OK with you. And now, your lovely new video has popped up, and there is the promise of more to come. I am SO pleased that you are out and about. Thank you for your video. And haven't youth hostels moved on a bit!!!!
Hello Susanna, I was very happy to see you on a bike trip again. Heading north from London this time. I find the riverside bike trails I saw in your video very romantic. Thank you for sharing the video. Best regards, Kurt
Hello Susanna, Good to see you looking so well and spending time on your bike... I am sure it's nice to do the occasional adventure with a friend. That Youth Hostel look really nice, I think it was the 70's the last time I stayed in one. See you on the next one. Take care. Paul,,
Hi Paul! yeh, was kind of the 80s for us, the last time we were in a YHA. Remember those little membership cards? collecting stamps from each hostel and things like that. Ah the old days! Interesting to see what it is like now. We enjoyed it. Nice kitchen, nice to meet people and natter, and the staff were chilled about us putting our bikes in the room etc. Anyway, hope you're doing OK!
At my desk at work when “ping!” a Susanna video landed AND only 12 or so minutes so I could enjoy it during my lunch break! Good to see both you and Lynne looking so well. Thoroughly enjoyed the film of course and looking forward to seeing Wales, thank you for sharing 🤗
So happy to see your post today. Been wondering how you were doing. Hope all is going well health wise and otherwise! Loved the scenery and music. Thankyou
Nice! Your vids make me really regret that I didn't venture across the channel to taste that beautiful English countryside when I cycled from France to the Netherlands. Glad your 'back in the saddle'!
I used to live in Enfield and Waltham Abbey area. I left about eight years ago, it's a great place for safe cycling and countryside too. I used to ride on my bike into Epping forrest before nightfall and go off the main paths to try and get lost. I would have a couple of beers and when it was dark would take a compass bearing and try and find my way out through the forrest in the dark with just a head torch. There are small brooks weaving through the forrest and the idea is you don't cycle into them in the dark. Hahahaha the stuff people do when bored.
Wonderful adventure, I’m also very much looking forward to the next which looks like an extreme adventure! Nothing like getting into a nice warm sleeping bag in a well secured tent with the wind and snow blowing!
Another great wee adventure from the big city! That youth hostel looked very comfy, especially for a February night. Last Time I cycled alongside a canal my front wheel hit a tree root and knocked me off, thankfully into the bushes rather than the canal. Thanks for sharing Susanna.
Hi Susanna, what a lovely wee trip (by your standards) I do love the way you film and edit, I'm guessing you are a professional or you certainly know how to make a lovely film. I hope the treatment is going well, you are certainly doing all the right things and I trust the prognosis is good. I'm already looking forward to the next, thanks for sharing. ATB Big Dave Scotland
Hi Susanna, lovely to see your video, your drive and enthusiasm still amazes me,Hertfordshire is not a county I’m familiar with but it looks lovely, great YHA,we did a recent Brompton ride here in Notts & it’s amazing what local interest you see not far from home, atb & looking forward to more adventures,Colin P. xx.
Thought “ this is the sort of place people like Suzanna camp” the other day whilst lifting my bike over a gate to try and find a rideable bit of track.
🤣 haha oh dear, funny to be known for going over gates and stiles and things. actually do you remember the Rough Stuff Fellowship? I was into that when I was a girl in the 70s, roaming round the Peak Distrcit lifting my bike over massive deer stiles and whatnot. Started young haha
Hi Susanna Thank you for your videos. You are so inspiring. I follow you from Rouen in France and watching your adventures is always a kind of boost. I look forward to your next video. See you soon 😘
So brilliant to see another video Susanna… I’ve been looking out for one and thinking of you… you are SUCH an inspiration!!! I feel like a right wimp now as I’ve not been out in the cold 🤣x
So intrigued by the “Tern” and the luggage setup on the Tern. Looks like you could pack tons of stuff in those panniers and I’m not one for packing light 😒. So glad you are on the Bromp in February having a wonderful time with a friend and I’m looking forward to what you get up to in Wales. Cheers from Canada 😘
Great to see you out and about again. I nearly fell over when I realised it was you on R4 a bit back, was doing some bike repairs half listening and all of a sudden the penny dropped! I stayed in 2 youth hostels last year after a similar hiatus and really enjoyed it, lots of interesting characters to chat to in the evening. Oh that sounds good your hostel experience. We enjoyed meeting people too, then it was also nice we had a cosy room to ourselves. Aw god yeh Radio 4 that was a thing, amazing that they approached me. Hope you didnt drop an allen key and chip your top tube or anything! thanks for writing!
Hey Susanna - looks like a lot of fun. Great weather too for that time of year, you were lucky considering how wet it’s been generally. Some interesting buildings featured like that tower. Unusual! Hope you are okay and having fun. Cheers Vin
Glad to see you're out and about again. Spring is on the way so your planned rides will, hopefully, be in warmer weather. Never ever feel bad about having a calorie rich meal or cakes when out on a ride, I don't.😄 Thanks for sharing , I'm really looking forward to your next video, it looks like it was cold!
Aw thanks David! yep the hostel was great wasn't it. Perfect for what we wanted, wheeling in the bikes and clobber like that, brilliant. By the way I thought my Trangia must be the oldest Trangia still in active use, but yours beats it by a decade! I just watched your trangia film, great haha
Another great view of the lovely countryside, and salute to the two of you for riding out and about in chilly February. I'm calling for butter reform, though ...
Great seeing your video this morning as I start my workday! Interesting about the 2000 mile Cathedral Route around England! I'll have to check on that as a possible retirement ride! :)
Yeh it is a nice idea isn't it the cathedrals ride. We went to evensong at St Pauls the day before, which made it even more nice. At St Albans we were there at the wrong time for any music or anything so just looked around then chilled out in the cathedral cafe, super nice. The staff let us lean our bikes inside too. Would be alovely retirement project. Or do chunks. Lynne is doing it in chunks, fitted around work and family and everything. Thanks for writing!
So lovely to share your adventure in this little film. As always a totally feel-good positive experience. The YHA looked great - and the breakfast - wow! I think they have changed a good deal over recent years. So good to hear your latest news on the cancer front. I am crossing everything and praying that the hormone treatment works in the long-term. You have so much more living to do yet!! Looking forward to Wales :-) Thank you for sharing with us despite the health challenges that you have had along the way x
So nice to see a Brompton owner & a Tern rider together.Nice to see you on the road again.Hope you get back to 100% again.I have a Bickerton/Tern and love it.All Tern luggage fits straight on.Stay safe.Jim
She's back! I have been hoping to see an update from you and hearing that you are doing ok. Your last video was incredible and but very emotional. I haven't stopped in a youth hostel since I walked the Pennine Way a long time ago 😂 I've also been getting out more, made it down the Mersey the other day to Didsbury which is beautiful this time of year. Still dithering between recording on my phone or investing in a gopro. Looking forward to seeing more of your exploits as we head into summer. Take care for now
Thank you so much Susanna, I really enjoyed sharing your adventure and the jaunty music was perfect. Very happy to see you looking and sounding like your old chirpy self 🌅🌅 All the best from Australia❣️
Aw thanks Julie! glad you liked the film, incl jaunty music! the second track reminded me of the theme tune of HERE COME THE DOUBLE DECKERS actually, a 70s kids TV series, did you have that? had a really jaunty theme tune, I loved it haha. Anyway, thank you for watching! Best wishes to you in Australia!
Greetings from Alberta Canada Suzanna. Wonderful to see you on another adventure touring around this beautiful country. Love and best wishes and safe travels 🙏🇨🇦
I'm really enjoying your videos. I was more than a bit shocked to see the YHA Hostel. I used to hostel and cycle a lot in my youth back in the late 1960s/70s. Hostel then were extremely "rustic"! Thanks for your videos. Trying to get to them all. Planning a cycle trip in Europe next spring.
I was thinking of you the other day Susanna & wondering how it was going for you. So lovely to see you looking well and enjoying another adventure. Thanks for sharing it! Your sometimes neighbour.

Yeh I really like the music bits too haha, I waste loads of time hunting for music that I like. But its nice, a nice thing to do. Glad you like them too
So lovely to see your latest adventure. I am glad to see the gravel/off road tracks don’t stop you. I find my Brompton (on original factory tyres) is very uncomfortable on stony terrain.
Hi Jopemel, Yeh many medium tracks that are not too muddy etc are doable on a Brompton I find, but on stony bumpy terrain I have to slow right down, and same on cobbles etc etc. I don't think different tyres make much difference (sadly!). It is just that small wheels go into the divots and bang on the bumps more than a big wheel bike. I think that's prob the main downside of any small wheeler.
@@susannathornton thank you. I was thinking of fitting shwalbe ones next to try but i fear you are correct as you travel so many miles on varied terrain.
Hope your feeling better I have finally ordered a Brompton it's only the A line 3 gears will be my 3rd bike I just like the idea of being able to take it anywhere. love your video as always.
What a fun trip. Lots of food, including your trademark homemade scones! How did you find the youth hostel experience? I’ve been wondering about using them for longer rides as I don’t have a lightweight tent. Looking forward to the Wales film.
Hi Lynne! Yeh we were curious too, about hostels. It was a good experience, basic, but that's OK, everything was clean, and it was warm and cosy, value for money, you can cook own food, we enjoyed meeting other people in the kitchen and nattering away all evening, and the warden (is that what they call them these days haha dont know) didn't mind about bikes in the room - no raised eyebrows about clomping in with loads of clobber. Oh and the breakfast was brilliant. There are fewer hostels these days it seeems, compared to when I was young but could be a good option I think - hostels on their own, as you say, so you dont need a tent, or a good option in between camp nights...
@@susannathornton Thanks Susanna, that’s very helpful. There are still plenty of hostels in the Peak District which is right on my doorstep so I think I’ll give it a try. Those hills though !
Hi Martyn! Thanks for watching my channel! about my Brompton, it's a three speed, and I took off the ginormous original chainring and put on a 38T one, which gives me one gear for uphill, one for downhill and one for flat haha. Simple is good!
@@susannathornton Wow! That is amazing! Even with a 38T, with that load on those welsh hills. Must have thigh muscle like He-Man💪😁 If you do get chance try a 6 speed just to see the difference on hills. Stay well!
Ah yeh I have ridden 6-speed Bromptons, quite like it - sometimes the 6-speed gives you exactly the gear you want, whereas a 3-speed obviulsy you make compromises - riding with cadence a bit higher than you want sometimes, and other times a bit slower than you ideally want. When I raced time trial and road, I obviously wanted close ratios, ie a larger number of gears with smaller differences between, for performance purposes. But for tootling around on these easygoing tours, the simplicity of 3 gears (with a small chainring) wins out for me - I just want a trouble-free ride, less to go wrong, easier to fix if it does!

@@susannathornton Thanks Susanna, that’s very helpful. There are still plenty of hostels in the Peak District which is right on my doorstep so I think I’ll give it a try. Those hills though !
Youth hostels are great these days and very cheap to share a single sex dorm, more expensive if you want your own room though.
I missed the Tern, next comes the fun bit, what sort of Tern.
Oh I don't know... I'll ask Lynne
Salisbury next ?
Great channel. I wondered if that is a 6 speed brompton with original chain ring(50)?
