Pete sturgess makes a lot of sense. This is one of your best podcasts from a coaching standpoint.
I quit coaching for that reason. I had lads coming off at half time crying because of what their parents were shouting at them during the game.
Bang on If your not the coach Keep your mouth shut
U9, U8,U10...U12 has nothing to do with real football....................so relax..............Contracts at 8-9-10 yrs can only harm the child......
Quality show👍
This is the new training focus of on-ball and dribbling, dueling I can agree that at a young age 2v2 is great. Really Really simplify the Game! Let em see that at next level its 3v3. Then 3v3 with goalies. And next is 5v5 by age 8… and now the development means these kids have seen far more of the ball in game scenarios.
Kinda creepy how there’s loads of old men out there grooming kids into an (amazing) career from toddlers ages , then the same old men be making money off them when they grow up , and then go on to talk about the kids on UA-cam in a podcast. Why am I the only one who finds this obsession with football strange Before you say anything I support Liverpool and do indeed watch football
So if you start footballer earlier , you might be better off? What a genius wow! Never would of guessed that 🔔 end
😂😂😂 For real. Can’t believe players with more practice tend to be better than those with less practice!
I also especially loved the part where the second guy just reworded what the first guy said
He didn't say starting earlier makes a better player. He said starting the correct practise earlier makes a better player. I've played with a lad who basically only kicked a ball from the moment he could walk. Yet looked at the ball more than a different mate that had been playing a total of 8 months at 15 year old. Spoiler alert. The kid that started younger wasn't better at football as he had trained a terrible habit into himself.
I was Thought by a FIFA coach to keep the ball in between ur legs touching side to side of the inside of ur boot then U look forward not up forward and try control the ball passing it foot to foot . I hope that clears it . I found that also allowed me to get passed players by passing it to one foot then back to the other but ur practice now so ur looking up by now at first ur going to look down practice that first passing side to side shoulders width apart .
I put my heart in this, why does everyone think they’re the hardest, why do you speak for the sake of speaking
How?
5 or 6 aside I think is best for kids that age. Gives them enough space to move be creative while still learning spacing and positioning
Troy is so down to earth. The other guy however, the Chelsea ‘pre academy scout’. Stuck in a bubble about pre academy and academy for kids. Kids get dropped left right and centre at academy football. Hearts get broken. Kids should enjoy the sport. When they get older that’s when it gets serious.
I am a big advocate of Futsal. It's a great stand-alone sport or a development tool.
@projectfootballer, is this for training or weekend games format. As are you not promoting 5v5 for this age with GK.
💙
11111if her dad is in her life you have no right to say what you said
Excellent interview ❤. My Christmas present 🙌🙌🙌
Next gen ballers, take notes 📝
Who on earth fit them gold sockets/switches behind lampard wants shooting. Can’t stop looking at them 😂😂
What is alarming is that Troy clearly outlined the difference why he made it to the top and why 99.999 don’t yet those same 99.999 are so blind that they won’t get even if they are threatened with a gun… he NEEDED to become a footballer (that only 0.1% achieve) while 99.99% WANT to become footballers - that’s the difference and in that respect it is nothing new as A Maslow presented this phenomena in 1940s in his ‘hierarchy of needs’.
In Australia you just see the same body type - stocky, skilled midfielders. End up with no Strikers.
Liam Neeson frank lampard and klose all look alike
Sometimes someone who wasn't plumber doing that job finding better solutions how to do it better and more effectively than person who being taught how to do it from beginning. If you know what I mean 😅😅
Reload this conversation 2024/2025 edition. Look at the players coming through now Palmer, Curtis Jones, Angel Gomes, Bellingham, Foden, Gibbs white, Saka, Maddison, Grealish, Eze, Rogers, Nwaneri, Mikey moore, Tyler dibling, max dowman, list goes on and on. England are doing something right
What they see at that time ? They should be able to see Technical excellence, any football person who's lived, played and watched football can see it. Young coaches can't
The sad thing watching this is they should be looking at potential over performance but sadly same as 30 years ago there still seems to be an enthesis on performance which means the big kids, especially in the u8-u10 age ranges. In Europe it's different, Harvey Elliots technical brilliance would have been lauded, not some big kids smashing it in from 15 yards out because he's big and ain't gonna be big in 5 years. England still have a lot to learn and academy football STILL needs a culture change
Are we talking about a 8 year old here
@projectfootballer, Sean admit it mate you didn't agree with a lot Troy was saying. You are absolutely convinced the pre acedmey phases is the best thing a kid can get involved with. Giving kids a dream isn't the problem. Its the parents job to help manage emotions, expectations. Ensure they are excelling in other areas of there life's. Not putting kids into pre acedmey seems such a strange move if they are good enough.
Sean here 👋🏻, I think I did give my opinion in the moment and showed a different point of view to Troy. My lived experience is showing me that pre academy works in England. The data also backs it up. Troy’s personal experience is something different and he saw his journey and his brother’s journey and I can understand why he would be unconvinced on the academy route. I think he will probably come around when he experiences good training for his boy with Aston Villa and Birmingham. I think the conflict of the two difference view points made for a good episode. The viewer can be left to make their mind up. I will always challenge and I don’t mind people upset at me in the comments, because I am bringing a reality of what is happening. I can disagree with a guest but still listen to them and try to learn. I hope I always come across as open minded. I learned a lot from Troy in the episode and thought he was brilliant.
@projectfootballer your content is unreal mate. I wish there was more. I am working hard with 5 year old son in Scotland to try give him an opportunity as he seems to love football. You content really helps. Regarding Troy's opinion on pre acedmies. Based on your knowledge of all the best say 14 to 16 years old in England surely the vast majority if not all were at pre acedmies very early.
questions were better than the answers
When the conversation moved toward academy contracts I couldn’t help but cringe. Hearing the host blindly talking about signing a 5 year old up to academy training 3/4 times per week is borderline sickening, and this is from someone who did that for 10 years. The worst thing about modern football is the swathe of people trying to profit off the back of young and impressionable people. The reality is exactly how Troy phrases it, the ones who make it will be the ones who NEED it the most, not the ones who have parents with the biggest wallets.
Blonde fella definitely promotes kids having socials and most probably profits off the back of it. Just a hunch.
Sean here 👋🏻. How exactly would I profit off kids having social media? I would be interested how anyone could. I don’t think the episode would be very strong if the host didn’t provide an alternative perspective and represent different view points. There are some parents who do believe in social media for their children, why can’t their views be put forward. My job as a host is to challenge and try to ask questions that our audience would want me to ask. But I have no personal agenda for kids having social media accounts. Many podcasts will say what sounds nice on social media and not talk honestly, I think our podcast works because we speak with openness.
Get Jamie Lawrence on, to discuss the coaches ruining grass roots kids, by trying to make the teams play like Man City Keepers who can’t kick but playing the ball out of the back, Instead of kicking it under pressure. I watched my kids team concede 5 goals by this.
Personally I think the difference between a top Sunday league u16 and an academy player , might be growth spurts, this is why most sports operate on a much delayed development model , rugby doesn't even scout for national talent until 15/16 , sure kids show potential way before that ( Foden, Rooney etc.) but there's so many more stories of later developers/ average academy players all of a sudden breaking througj at 18+ , for me the resources should be top heavy at u18/u21/u23 level.. the amount of top grass roots u18 players must be quite substantial
Bang on.
Hope this blows up and gets more views. Troy is absolutely spot on. Would love to have him back on in the future
Thank troy for my subscription.... srsly if every School had a troy deeney helping unruley kids it would only take one generation to rule it out. please tell him as a parent i think hes a true legend. as a football supporter " chelsea " his THAT GOAL still makes me go cold when i hear it. Working class lad does good. A true council flats boy that climbed the ladder from park to prem. props Deeney.....
dont drunk before make statement..your are world class..😂rubbish pundit
BTW you're on a Podcast so don't swear, Nice on Troy 🤣🤣🤣🙈
Troy isn’t an academic but he’s wise, very smart. Raw at times but always honest.
Good interview, can’t say I agreed with everything but alot of good stuff in there. Always good to get different, experienced perspectives
The stat about kids stopping to play at 14 is accurate ... but I think the reasons behind it are a bit fuzzy. I coach at a high level club, a high school and run a rec program. At 14, most rec programs stop operating. I think that is a huge problem in this country as the shift to "select teams" has become more prevalent. Let's be honest - we all know those select clubs that are basically glorified rec programs. Add on to that the introduction of high school sports and many times kids having to finally choose between sports. I could go on, but I think removing Rec programs is a big problem. When kids get to the U15 level, most clubs have started to really push for results-driven development as they try to move up the ranks to ECNL, NPL, E64, etc or to keep their places there. It's a broken system for sure.
Top quality stuff! Troy Deeney! 🙏🏾
More then anything I love the way Troy talks about his kids obviously a great parent, who’s focused on making his children well rounded individuals 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Completely agree with Troy regarding academies. It’s not required to making it as a footballer! More than 1 path
Best one yet
Legendary podcast. When asked why he wouldn't put his child in an Academy. Out of the 15 who are in Academy team maybe 1 makes it. What i am interested in is what the other 14 are now doing. Spot on when he says that your child should be smashing it in grass roots before even considering an Academy. Troy says it like it is.
The amount of podcasts he’s in…that bank balance must be getting low
you think he got paid for this?
Used to think Troy was an absolute bellend when he was playing. But have listened/watch many podcasts he’s been on… he is brilliant and his journey was inspirational.
I admire Troy, he was true to himself. He wore his heart on his chest, he had a passion, hunger for the game and respect for his team.. Without doubt, he was a leader amongst men.. fantastic values and beliefs that will no doubt raise great children
Social media is toxic and not natural.
