Just to add a piont. When we refer to SPEED ”getting quicker”. Speed refers not just to PHYSICAL STRAIGHT LINE RUNNING, Speed is intregrated with every aspect of Physical and psychological development. Ie if you develop flexibility & agility, that will improve speed of movement, also, if you play the game more, your decision making will or should improve with experience. How many top players are physically slow!!! Remember, football is a sport that includes; running, jumping, twisting, changibg direction, deception, kicking, pulling, pushing, catching and these are just the very basic physical characteristics / movements, let alone the Mental processing of game/movement Decisions & Scanning etc

I still think early development of highly technical & high level of competition in local leagues is developibg players (even very small) that will be in demand given their skill & game knwowledge/experience. Here in Barcelona, Top grassroots clubs are recruiting Coaches (Uefa A and Pro Coaches) who are now developing teams that are competing with Barcelona, Espanyol professional academies who play in our Local top leagues; week in, week out. Top technical players here in grassroots are being recruited by Real Madrid, Athletic Madrid, Lavante, Girona, Espanyol and Barceloba at 9-14 years.. The technical standard is the best i have seen in 30 years Coaching..

Great information for parents on how to guide their children in youth football. I wish the United States had a structure like England with youth development in academics instead of pay to play

I agree, but, here in Barcelona Fcf Grassroots we pay to play about 1000 Euros a year including training kit, match kit and fantastic facilities. When you pay you also expect great coaches which you get, the higher you go up the pyramid. This means they get Paid snd valued for their work. Here, if you reach the top league as a player you get to play against Barcelona, Espanyol and Damm academies aged 7-18 years, but, competition and local league is crucial, (top = Pro academies) if players are to play and compete… Technification and tournaments we do pay extra..

As parents, our focus should be on developibg our children to be the best they can be; in School, in football and as a young person.
Family and club/Coach/team values are so important in creating the environment that will allow children to be confident, be motivated and thrive. Its a bumpy nonlinear journey of discovery, so enjoy the highs and lows 👍🏻

My question is when is the right time to get into an academy?

    • @neildean7515

I would say as soon as possible just because of the quality of Coaching and support. But, the jouney is not linear and recently i have seen 12, 14 and even 16 year olds (mavbe late developers) join pro academies, so do not rush, if the player is good enough, they will be found..

@@neildean7515 my issue is some Cat 1 academy’s just play games for training sessions, they don’t do different types of training to improve players at U7-U10.

5 or 6 is where it really starts. Low risk for clubs as there are no contracts. Kids can join and develop in preparation for the full academy

Ideal age is 6 to 8 years old.
From experience, the majority are in the system at 6, 7 and 8 years old.
If you aren’t in an academy by U9
in the UK your chances are remote of ever getting into one.
I have seen some U10 and above get in, but not all that many.

Few counter points. Plenty of kids have very later growth spurts, i think football misses out on these kids. I was a pro athlete and agree luck is a huge factor.

Scouting is like fund managers picking the potential stocks when market fell, the problem is too many of them chasing the same stocks…, many scouts often mentioned attributes like speed, acceleration they are looking for, …the job gets too easy for them, those fast kids are easily stood out from the games, even 80 years old could tell, and terrible news are most scouts have similar view on scouting, resulting one particular type of the players been produced, many of them look like coming out of from same factory production line, therefore the persons scouted Xavi and Jorginho need to be given applause 👏, the future of football looks bleak, it looks like a fast food football in my opinion, they look to USA too much, they want the game to become fast, they are changing the essence of football, football suppose to be more artistic, I would never compare Snooker to pool, I would rather watching snooker, what people in the football industry need to understand is to have right balances between strength/power and brains/vision/technique, now all you scouts are destroying the balance, destroying the culture, it looks more and more Americanized sport, it’s like fast food rubbish but addictive
