HAL Heavy Duty Machining Australia
Australia
Приєднався 16 вер 2023
Welcome to our heavy duty machine shop. We specialise in the drilling industry and are located in Central Qld, Australia.
My name is Matt, and in a nutshell we make super heavy duty gear that drillers typically love breaking.
Hydraulic cylinders, drilling crossover subs, drill bits, recovery gear... the list goes on. If it's drilling related, we do it.
WHY HAL?
We chose to name the channel after my late grandad Hal.
After working on a drill rig since the age of 14, Grandad then "retired" from drilling at age 60 to "the machine shop" ... and then proceeded to work until his 87th birthday.
THE CHANNEL
This little channel is just about sharing some of the weird and wonderful gear we get to make in the machine shop... and how drillers manage to break it.
I upload one video a week and really appreciate all the comments from around the world. You guys are awesome. Thank you.

The LARGEST Thing We've Machined in 60 years (It's Too Big For The MEGABORE!)
In today's video, we're machining the biggest part we've ever attempted in 60 years! This MONSTER component is the 5 ton drive head for our MEGADRILL, and the flange warped during welding. We'll be using a Marcem Flange Facer to do the job, and experimenting using both carbide and tool steel for cutting.
It's a wild setup, but let's see if we can get the job done.
Enjoy!
About HAL Heavy Duty:
We're a real life machine shop for a 60 year old drilling company located in Central Queensland, Australia. Our job is to keep rigs running in the field - fixing all the stuff drillers break and creating all the custom gear they need to get the job done!
We run two CNC's, manual repair lathes, a few mills and a big green Megabore Lathe we call "THE HULK"... and are constantly having to make weird and wonderful tools for odd (usually oversize) jobs.
We're a little shop that takes on big projects, and the latest is our MEGADRILL project where we're manufacturing a 3.0m (10 foot!) drill bit that'll weigh upward of 20 tonnes and we're getting ready to send it 250m (800+ feet) deep.
If you want to catch up on the progress... here's the latest on the project.

78mm UDRILL Spitting Snail Sized Chips 🐌 (and HEAVY CUTS with the boring bar too!)
Переглядів 22 тис.День тому
In today's video we are machining up an inner tube end for the Big Rig. We'll be using the Colchester Alpha 1760 (HAL) and using a 78mm Kennametal Indexable Drill (Udrill) and two different boring bars, specifically testing a new Iscar special CXMG 40mm bar for the shallower end, and our trusty 63mm CNMG bar "Kong" for the deeper end. It's a simple part, but in my opinion this video captures so...
Crazy Shop Made Drill (That's a NIGHTMARE to Run!)
Переглядів 37 тис.14 днів тому
In today's video we're using our craziest tool in the shop! It's a 110mm shop made drill that looks like a Kennametal HTS or Korea Technics Drill that lied about everything it's whole life (it has an INSANELY long pilot nose!) I've got a real LOVE / HATE relationship with the Kraken. I love that it's a shop made tool that's unique, and USUALLY gets the job done... I hate that its nose falls off...
Why We Bought a MEGABORE Lathe (… and 5 Things We Use It For!)
Переглядів 88 тис.21 день тому
In today's video we're spotlighting our big green Gurutzpe MEGABORE Lathe affectionately referred to as "THE HULK". We purchased this 30 year old monster about 8 months ago to help us machine all the drill rods, drill stem and various components for our MEGADRILL project. The Hulk is a Weapon. It came without any manuals or books - and has no real ID plates - so we have no idea how much power i...
HTS Drilling At 750 RPM (The Chips Literally EXPLODE off!)
Переглядів 94 тис.Місяць тому
In this week's video we're machining up non-return valves for the exploration and water well rigs. An essential part of the drill stem, these valves make sure that drilling fluid can't come back up the hole. We'll be using a brand new 63mm Kennametal HTS Drill, as the holes needed are deeper than our Udrills can reach. There's three of them to machine, so I'll be using this as an opportunity to...

In this week's video we're taking a look at the MEGADRILL. It's a 20 ton drill bit that's being constructed for drilling underground mining ventilation and rescue shafts. Powered by RC Air technology to remove cuttings, it's a unique setup that will drill three hole sizes to a final depth of 250m (over 800ft). 2.4m (7'10") 2.7m (8'10") 3.0m (Just under 10 ft!) We're almost finished with the 2.7...
Record Breaking Drill Sub (Machined With MASSIVE Shop Made Tools!)
Переглядів 69 тис.Місяць тому
In this week's video we'll be machining the largest drilling crossover sub we've machined in 60 years! A "saver sub" for the Big Rig, the part starts as a 900lb (400kg) billet of solid 4140, and ends up a giant thread protector. This saver subs sits directly below the drive head and will he screwed into the giant drill rods that drive our 3.0m (10ft) Megadrill an insane 250m (800ft) into the ea...

In this week's video we're showing the full build of our most recent XL boring bar "TINY". We needed to create this big guy to build the largest crossover drill sub we've ever machined. Measuring a total length of around 3 feet long (900 mm) and a workable length of 2 feet (625mm)... this is by far the biggest tool in the shop. Heavy Duty Lifting Tool | But Will It Hold?
Great episode,100% quality H.S.S. is the way to go ,and is very underestimated by younger tradesmen. Many tradesmen haven't the skills to grind H.H.S tools today. Personally, where I did my Fitting & Turning apprenticeship in Australia, we machined different steels, especially stainless steel, the first 2 years the apprentices had to use H.H.S. hand ground carbide years 3 & 4. We used Assab 17 H.H.S, and after hand grinding, the tools were oil stoned. Always using sulphur based cutting oil. I still always use H.H.S when screw cutting . Keep up the great work.
This is another Aussie machinist I will watch from UK👍
Happy days. I thought I had watched all you videos. Yay I just found another one. Happy days from kiwi land. Bring on the chips and coolaid, bluebird chips and sprit lemonade. From kiwi land😂🎉
The beard? Is that risky in your line of work?

Is this like a knockoff channel on CEE?
Yeah, god forbid there are two shops in Australia with lathes, dogs & rusted out Franna cranes 🤣 💯 a knockoff
First Time viewer from Oregon in the US, really enjoyed the video
Cheers mate 🇺🇸👊
Watching in North Carolina. 😊

Just a note of thanks for reference to SAE sizes. Sometimes it’s the small things that brings viewers like me back to a channel. Appreciated.
Cheers mate. Good to know 👊
Gday Matt, merry Christmas for yesterday. Ahhh the old flange facer to the rescue. Yeah the dodgy technique wouldn’t have cut it 🥁 sorry mate couldn’t help it. It was bloody painful watching every new cut full well knowing how long one of them can take. In reply to what ideas to improve the cutting situation…. I’ve been know to mount HSS end mills in boring heads and using them as single point cutters (great geometry and hard coatings) Just gives an edge over the traditional hand ground HSS tool bits. Keep the videos coming, what you’re doing is great. Enjoy your well earned time off! Cheers, Andrew
Interesting! Yeah, I tend to agree. If we’d gone the dodgy way I’d still be working on it 🤣👊
Man those are some nice chips
👊💯🙏
4:47 - the mud wasps love to make that same patch of mud “structure” (with their next generation within) on the mortar joints of the stone face on my house in Pennsylvania USA. So they are in other countries, maybe not exactly the same species but close enough.
Little rascals get EVERYWHERE over here!
We call them mud dinners here in the US
They’re crafty little beggars
Washington State, USA. Just discovered your channel, and subscribed!
Cheers mate! Thanks for jumping on board 🇺🇸👊
Watching from Minnesota, USA. Have enjoyed CEE for years, just found you. Awsome .
Cheers mate! 👊🇺🇸
Elon Musk might get his The Boring Company to produce something like that. The underground tunnels will need ventilation as well as emergency access openings.
If anyone can make it happen, it’s that guy 💯
Watching and subscribing from the UK.
🇬🇧👊🙏
well I'm a big fan of CEE, and I'm glad youtube recommended me your channel as it won't be the last vid I'm gonna watch here. Greetings from Poland!
🇵🇱🙏👊
Just discovered your channel and love it. That Gurutzpe is a proper beast. My ambition is to get a 105mm bore lathe but only short bed. Do you have a horizontal boring mill? I have a small Kearns S type which would be lost in your shop but it gets me out of trouble on a weekly basis.
We don’t have a horizontal borer yet, but def need one soon.
Gday mate, just found your channel. Really enjoy watching engineering stuff. CEE has me hooked! From Mulwala NSW..🍺🍺
Cheers brother 👊
Happy holidays from San Francisco California all the best in the New Year 👍💥💥
Happy Holidays mate! 🇺🇸👊
The fact that a 70mm thick flange warped from welding is absolutely insane. Can you imagine how much force that it takes to do that. Anyway good job my friend
That was my thought exactly 💯👊
I'm not a machinist, but I wondered if you could rig up a grinding head in a similar fashion? Great content. You're on my favorites list now.
We definitely considered it, but figured the flange Facer would be quieter 🤣👊
Dave from rand machine fresno california, did you buy the flange facer new for that project?also what was the cutting time for the entire flange? what will you be using to drive that monster drill? looks like it would take a full tilt locomotive v16 diesel engine! merry christmas and happy new year! strange to think its probably 90+ degrees f there on xmas day!
Cheers brother! Yeah, it was 41 degrees C yesterday. Bloody boiling. Nah, we just rented it. Fingers crossed with some improvements in welding setup we shouldn’t have to do it again any time soon!
Whenever I come across something a bit out of the ordinary I usually default to UA-cam. I haven't yet had something like this show up, but now I will know how to tackle it if ever does. I love your use of HSS. There many times when it can rescue a job that just doesn't suit carbide. Well done and thank you.
It’s always my go-to once the shit starts to hit the fan. Not always as quick… but always gets the job done 👊
As always, great machining video and informational approaches to reach the goal. Intro music makes me click quicker than ever once I noticed that there's new video :D
Love it! 👊

Thanks mate! 🙏🇿🇦
That’s a awesome tool I’m glad I didn’t have to buy one or learn how to use it 😂great job
Checking in from central Alabama, USA. The OCD in me wants perfection but the realist in me understands that "perfection is the enemy of good enough".
Couldn’t have said it between myself 👊 🇺🇸🙏
Damn 2 weeks off? Not in fReEdOm LaNd ….. unless you’re a politician
The while country shuts down 🤣👊
LOTO good on ya. thanks for sharing such a unique machine. Charles
Cheers Charles 👊
Thanks for a look into a world that most of us will never see. Your enthusiasm is contagious.
Appreciate the kind words mate!
Merry xmass from Dahlonega Ga. USA . Love your videos.
Merry Christmas mate! 🇺🇸🙏
Is there a tool that could hone a flat surface like that? Would that have been a better approach? At least it wouldn’t have been breaking bits and seems like it would handle the interrupted surface better, maybe?
Im honestly not sure. It was a really odd part to machine
i am from the netherlands and love machining big stuf, Thanks for the video Matt!
Most welcome. Thanks for watching!
Hi guys I’m tuning in from Leicester England uk. Love you’re channel 🏴
🇬🇧👊🙏
Very wonderful tutorial 🙏💐
Thanks mate
Could be wrong but I’d put money on the cause being the interpass temp got to high look like the most warp was in the most accessible area where the welding would have gone slightly faster and not left to cool down
Also give the welds a good needling while welding helps relieve some of the stresses adds time to the job but worth it in the end
Could be. To me it seemed to have pulled where it wasn’t supported by the gussets. Definitely a learning experience
@@halheavyduty that would definitely be the case the gussets held it That being said will be a massive amount stress built up good luck looks. Like a fun project for sure
From Tasmania.
🇦🇺👊👊
Great vids, respect to calling out CEE. Just a tip work on the volume levels when machining stuff.
Def need to work on improving the levels etc.
Hi from South Africa, just find your cancel will be looking out for more great stuff. That is a huge beast if you go bigger call the next one Indlovu said inglovo meaning elephant 😅
Cheers mate! Glad you’re enjoying the channel. 🇿🇦🙏 The Elephant! I like it 👊
Excellent content. Next, do you have a happy Pit Bull?
Haha nope. Just two German Shepards… We used to have a Kangaroo and a shed pig named Elvis in the 80s 🤣
Perhaps a stupid question: why can't you heat treat the whole flange so that there aren't the hardened areas?
I think it’s just the sheer amount of directed heat that results from welding. Some SERIOUS heat got pumped into a very specific section to seems.
"Lucked out" How American is that ???
Grandma was a Texan… I think a LOT of my sayings came from her.
What a great video. That looked like a line borer but for facing. Logically one of those should exist. What do you know it does. I’m jealous your channel has done so well in only half a year. Well done. I’m an old machinist trained in the 1980’s so I was thinking to use a great big hunk of high speed steel and slow it right down. Worked most of my life in IT since then and now retired but I love my home shop. I’m watching from north east NSW. I’m guessing you’re in North Queensland.
Thanks mate, appreciate the kind words! 🙏 I’m genuinely surprised the channel has done so well. Really grateful for all the support.
@ You deserve it. Half decent, well edited videos well with coherent dialog are harder to make than most people think.
Great content - looks like I'm one of the few Aussies here ! Amazing how many commenters referenced CEE or even just Kurtis and that was enough. Of course CEE's not so secret weapon is Karen who pulls the whole thing together but you have your own unique presentation and happily have a very personable demeanor. I think the key to this type of content is to predict what questions arise in the viewers minds as they watch and ensure they are answered by the end of the video which I think you did well. Big mistake to take to heart comments whether they be positive or negative. Be yourself and be true to yourself. If people like it they will if they dont they wont.
Couldn’t agree more mate. I like CEE, but they’re quite different to what we do. In just keen to give everyone an honest window into our little world.
Are you guys in Rocky?
💯😉
