The Lesson to Learn From Tears of the Kingdom (Legend of Zelda)
I love Tears of the Kingdom, it's one of my favourite Zelda games... But, while Breath of the Wild had used freedom to it's absolute fullest potential, TotK really didn't, it kept butting heads with the idea that freedom is going to be the future of the series. So today I want to look beyond Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom and explain why more isn't always better.

What Will Tears of the Kingdom be Remembered for? (Legend of Zelda)

Tears of the Kingdom has been under fire since release for being too similar to Breath of the Wild in a lot of cases, and because it's a sequel, there's the notion that it could end up aging worse than its predecessor, I don't believe so, and this video is explaining exactly how I think Tears of the Kingdom will be remembered for (outside of weak lore, you commenters are funny har har) Patreon:...

The "Fake" Zonai Tribe Origins SOLVED (Tears of the Kingdom Theory/Lore)

The Triforce has been around in the series since the very beginning of the timeline, skyward sword features it heavily, it shows up in pretty much every single 3d zelda game, it's around. Tears of the Kingdom and Breath of the Wild don't put the triforce front and centre BUT I think there's much more to that than meets the eye, I think through TOTK and BOTW we've just been through the age of te...

Why Could Other Heroes' Tunics be in the Depths? (Tears of the Kingdom Theory/Speculation)

    It’s fascinating to see how everyone defines what it is and why it is that they enjoy these amazing games. Dungeons are also very important to me, an immersive world also matters greatly. These two categories always makes me so torn when choosing which I prefer between OOT and MM. We def share some of the same notions: LBW is my favorite 2D zelda and TP is my fav 3D zelda. I personally prefer playing 2D zelda, but that’s just a personal thing. With that being said, it’s probably clear that I’d say Lttp and LA would be higher on my list. A great watch overall regardless.

    Just a thought, what if the tunic of the wild was left behind by the former Champions when they moved on, hoping Link would find it again. The 3 leviathans could be a reference to the divine beasts or even the Triforce itself

    Hot Take: The Divine Beasts were better than the dungeons from Tears of the Kingdom especially from a story and lore perspective. They had better puzzles, better mechanics, unique structures, interesting concepts, and amazing atmospheres. The only decent dungeon from Tears of the Kingdom was the Lightning Temple. The Wind, Fire, Water, and Spirit Temple were all bad. The bosses were better but the dungeons themselves were a step down from the Divine Beasts.

    Midna is definitely my favorite companion and one of my favorite Zelda characters too honestly lmao She has personality, lots character development, isn’t annoying, and I feel like Nintendo did a great job at initially making you dislike her, but grow to love her over time. That’s what happened with me. She goes from using link and disliking the light world, to seeing him as a close friend and sacrificing herself for him and the light world. It’s kinda sad we will never see her again in a canon game, we see her a lot in non canon games, but I doubt they’ll ever bring her back. Unless they make a direct sequel to twilight princess where link is looking for his lost companion, mirroring majora’s mask, and eventually finding her, I don’t think we will ever see her again. But then again they did her character absolutely perfectly, which leaves me satisfied even with one appearance in the entire canon series.

    I'm going to be honest... it didn't feel rewarding to play TOTK from my perspective. I am one of the people who liked the divine beasts and I enjoyed the temples on their own merits. However... TOTK only does individual things better than BOTW. The sum of TOTK's parts is not equal to the whole of BOTW. Botw's sum of parts is greater than all of them individually. BOTW, to me, is the better video game while TOTK is just a better tech demo. I also think focusing on BOTW zelda for the story of TOTK was a downright writing mistake. Despite how good the story could be... not much really changes as a consequence. Zelda was *already* in a good place as a leader. Unsure of herself, sure, but still a good leader. It was Link who needed more expansion on his character. We can even see how Link slowly transitioned from being a loner from BOTW to having genuine friends in TOTK. That would have made a fantastic plot but you just don't get to be a part of the active plot. Let Link be the active force in the plot, let Zelda have the reactive part.

    You're point about Fire Temple will PREACH! I purposefully played it with no ascend or hoverbike etc. ONLY rail carts, and it was arguably my most enjoyable temple because of it (even if it still pales in comparison to classic dungeons). Lightning was good too. Frankly, overall, I give it to the divine beasts! What TOTK gained in theming, lead ups, and bosses (all GREAT additions) it lost in puzzle design by NOT LIMITING your abilities (something as simple as not being able to climb in the divine beasts lend them FAR GREATER puzzle power than almost anything in TOTK). Perhaps a hot take lol

I like the Wind Waker but *you make a Great point @ ~ **0:18**.* LOZ1 gave you near unparalleled freedom - and hey, it only built the foundations for arguably the most Successful franchise in the industry?? But in WW: yes the idea of ''free sailing'' was neat _at face value_ , till you found this was only an _illusion of freedom_ as say, Gale Isle 'early game'. Then , could _not_ enter the Wind Temple because oh look , ''prOgres$ioN'.

    correction: "for years, this is the only thing we assumed about the zonai" the theory crafters made wild assumptions the devs didnt share, and now half of the zeldatubers cant stop talking about how much they hate zelda because the zonai were "supposed" to be barbarians. Remember that the hylians were "barbarians" until the zonai came, people got the order of events backwards and it made them mad for some reason.

    We simply don't know. The barbarian armor set could have been from ancient Hylians pre Rauru's kingdom. From time even before or during the time Zonai had descended to the land. It makes sense. The ancient Hylians were warlike. Ganondorf him remarks how before the Zonai descended, the various races weren't peaceniks it was an era when the strongest warriors ruled and battled.

    They can keep the overworld the nice open feel they want, just for the love of god bring back more traditional dungeons and puzzles that Zelda is known for. We went from great stories to bare minimum as well. A big issue is that the players deal with the aftermath of the big conflict instead of being there during it.

    The freedom in TotK is optional. I played through the game in its entirety just using the linear breadcrumbs that the designers have placed in the world design and NPC dialog. I don't think that just because the game has freedom, that it means you are forced to do things your own way. You can follow a set path if you want to.

    I just wish they would take the best aspects of BOTH philosophies and combine them together (which despite popular belief, is very much possible, almost trivial in fact). Like, imagine if they had classic items like the hookshot, boomerang, bomb bag, etc. but you only unlocked each one after going to each dungeon (like the divine beasts for example). Basically each Divine Beast or whatever would act as a much larger version of the tutorial shrines you got each rune from, but you need to travel across the map to get each one in any order you want. Each item wouldn't be _necessary_ for travel, but they would improve your ability to explore and unlock secrets. Just _imagine_ the insane possibilities of having a hookshot in an open-world game...

    • @pitshoster401
      @pitshoster401 3 місяці тому

      And they make all of these traditional items garbage made out of styrofoam. Weapon durability has got to go if we're going to get a hookshot thats even remotely fun to use.

    I feel like Nintendo could do well with taking a page from Larion's book. In Divinity Original Sin 1 and 2, as well as the new Bauldurs Gate 3, they divide each open world into multiple chunks, you cant freely explore within a chunk, but you have to progress trough the story to move onto the next. BotW and TotK would benefit from forcing you to go to each major dungeon in a set order. A lot of problems in the story of TotK comes from the fact that you can do each dungeon in any order, so they do the same plot point four times, and the scaling in difficulty is so janky, where in TP each area gets progressively harder, both in exploration and combat, TotK has a difficulty curve more resembling a noodle then a curve, if you follow the suggested path, that is doing the great sky island, then going to Pura and get the lore, then head west to Kakariko then loop back to Pura then Impa and then going to the Zora place and do the water dungeon, if you do the game in this order without diverting from the path too much, the difficulty curve is good, but that all goes out the window once you finish the water temple. If you play the game as an open world and just explore at your own speed, the game goes from super easy to super hard back to super easy in an erratic pattern, then if you kill too many enemies, the stronger enemies start to spawn, giving you better gear that trivialize other parts, and if you go and improve your armor, wich isnt that hard, you become near unkillable. Larion have each act of their games be balanced around a chunk of difficulty, act 1 is the easiest, then act 2 is a little harder, and finally act 3 is the hardest, and within each of those acts, things get harder the further away they are from the starting point, so the difficulty never get out of hand, and you will always have an appropriate challenge, irrelevant of how you play the game. The little linearity Larion imposes on their players does a huge service to getting an appropriate level of challenge, both in their puzzles, fights and boss battles. Balancing a game in general is an herculean task for anyone, balancing an open world game where you can go anywhere at any time is near impossible, and so far i have yet to see an open world game with a good difficulty curve. An other thing BotW and TotK do not do because of their open world nature is evolving puzzle design, all the other Zelda games introduces a puzzle idea, then evolve upon it over time, a good example is the Boss Keys in the DS Zeldas, for those who dont know, in Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks, the boss keys are huge keys that you have to pick up and carry around, and while you carry them, you cant do anything but walk around or throw the key, the puzzles usually begin with you carrying the Key around some pits before you put it in the door, but towards the end you get into a wild minecart ride where you try to get the key to where it is by shooting arrows to try to change the minecart path. There are plenty of other things that the open world style has done to the dungeons, like the removal of the dungeon item, that once acquired completely recontexualizes the dungeon, among other things, but that would be an other essay for me to write, and the UA-cam comment section isnt that well suited for that. Also, remove all the Koroks and put all the shrine puzzles into their own larger dungeons. And for you who managed to get all the way down here, thank you for your time.

    I very much have enjoyed ToTK so far. I still have Ganon to do, and a fair amount of shrines. I am ok with freedom but I want the next Zelda to return to its roots in some ways. It can be open world but instead of shrines, I feel that caves and individual dungeons should be scattered about with armor and heart pieces being the rewards. I also want a return to form with dungeons. The new ones are very hit or miss and I didn't particularly enjoy the gimmick of going to the 4 or 5 locations and activating the beacons to open the door to the final boss.

    I’m going to correct what you said at 2:06. No, Zelda has _never_ been about freedom. Not until BotW. Games in general aren’t about freedom, because games inherently have to restrict the player to be considered “games.” BotW and TotK’s overt focus on “freedom” is what makes them such embarrassingly bad games.

    • @theplinko9840
      @theplinko9840 3 місяці тому

      @@TriforceTrends no, it couldn’t. You needed to do dungeon 3 before you could get to dungeon 4, you needed to do dungeon 4 before you could finish any of the dungeons after 4 (you could technically get the triforce out of 8 but you’d have to leave the 2 items), you needed to do dungeon 6 before 7, and you needed to do 1 before 6 or 8. The only dungeon in the entire game that doesn’t have some sort of qualifier in terms of order is 2. The way dungeon orders were handled in Zelda 1 is far more similar to LttP or OoT than BotW.

    8:07 No. No I did NOT, and through no intent of my own. When I completed the Ultrahand shrine, the game's camera focused me back to the Temple of Time, my objective marker ALSO pointing me there. So I went back, only to be told to seek out the other shrines, but not being told where on the island they were. Because of this immediate redirection from the game itself after the first shrine, I never saw the clear route beyond it, and instead started bashing my head against the wall that was the snowy mountain for half of my time in the tutorial, actually making it to the shrine at the top before seeing what my intended route was meant to be. All the while, the game only ever told me one thing. "Go back to the Temple of Time." This led to a rather bitter first impression, and an accumulated FIVE HOURS of playtime in the TUTORIAL. This was compounded further when I was finally allowed back to the surface. I was immediately attacked by a scavenging bokoblin, which reoriented my initial field of view. I set off in that newfound direction due to spotting some shrines in the distance, only learning that I had missed an entire TOWN and the ever important glider another two hours in, when I finally decided to follow my objective marker (which had been overwritten without me noticing). After taking to the skies in a hot air balloon with Impa... I was met with no way down without killing myself. I haven't had the desire to continue playing since.

    I think the Zelda team should find a balance between how the old games and the new games work. I love BotW's openness and exploration, but its dungeons leave a lot to be desired. The story in BotW made sense for what they were going for, but TotK's story is a big mess. Even if you do all of the tears in order, the game essentially spoils its own story. Like, why did Mineru have to talk about dragonification in the 4th tear out of 12? I knew she was going to turn into a dragon after that cutscene, and it ruined the story for me. Plus, Zelda turning into a dragon imo wasn't the best way to incorporate into the story. I thought it would have been more awesome if Zelda figured out how to travel to the future, join Link in the final boss fight, and defeat Ganondorf together.

    Freedom was the start of the series, you idiots. Stop acting like video games just appeared after oot descended from the heavens.

    I still want some smaller Zelda games with the classic progression. It would be nice if nintendo made some smaller/cheaper Zelda games in that style as they worked on the next BIG BotW/TotK style game.

    These games are not even in my top 10 Zelda games. One more open world game and I will be forced to drop the series entirely

    Why didn't they just have a set order to play the memories regardless of the geoglyph you've found? Then the player isn't spoiled/confused, and Link can have an appropriate reaction to each one. The final memory, where Zelda transforms, should be locked until certain story checkpoints have been reached. Finding them all is annoying because Link knows the truth, yet still chases rumors around Hyrule, and doesn't share that info when it'd have been useful. Without the final one, it could be argued that while Link deep down understands what happened, he is DESPERATE for there to be another answer. So any sign of her, no matter how implausible would be chased.
