  • The Zelda series has been going in a direction that a LOT of people LOVE, and some people don't love quite so much, they'd like some more traditional elements to return that aren't currently in Tears of the Kingdom and Breath of the Wild. Today I'm gonna be looking at some interviews that Aonuma and Fujibayashi have attended to look for some clues as to what's in the future of the Legend of Zelda series, more open games, more of a mixture... Or no more "linear" elements in Zelda games from now on? We take a look at this and more in this video.

    Honestly, if TotK had beefier dungeons and a better story, it'd be like the perfect experience for me, and that seems completely attainable. Additionally, I really love the "pre-dungeon" segments in this game and I hope they continue as a trend----just imagine those segments coupled with fully blown dungeon experiences like in OoT-style games and a massive open overworld like in BotW/TotK.

    The only issue I had with TotK was the poor storytelling, if we can get Twilight Princess or Majora's Mask, then surely we can get more well made stories like that.

      @@craigbernhardt1698Absolutely not, the memories are paced irregularly, there's no context to really anything that happens in them (Zelda landing in Ancient Hyrule and talking to Rauru and Sonia in the 2nd memory and then the 3rd memory is an immediate skip to Mineru with Zelda as a sage, with a competent grasp on her powers with no clarification in between is LAME as fuck, and every other memory is like this), and the story outside the memories is fine but feels kinda barely there, with little real connection to BOTW. The only good sage stories were Sidon and Riju, only because they still felt like they did from BOTW. The story is a mess, it's lame, and the Zonai are also honestly kinda lame

    • @craigbernhardt1698
      @craigbernhardt1698 10 місяців тому +1

      @@Tycholarfero ok but the memories in botw were irregularly placed too. The only reason I think totk story is better is because there is more meat to it. There were not many connections to botw but there was just more there overall. So I'm not saying it was great but I do think it was better than botw because at least for me personally I felt botw was bland and really had nothing to it when it comes to a story. At least totk had significant lore drops to catch people's attention. Botw didn't even try.

    Pleasing the fanbase as a whole will be very difficult. Its become clear that the Zelda fanbase has mostly split along lines of love for the BotW style and the OoT style (with the occational overlap). I was introduced via BotW, so I dont fully understand the dislike from the other group, but I recognize that people growing up with those games are missing the kinds of games they grew up with, since Zelda has taken a new direction. There could very well be an introduction of more traditional elements to the series, but only time will tell.

    • @XanderVJ
      @XanderVJ 11 місяців тому +1

      I don't think they will even try to appeal to older fans, to be honest. Older fans don't really realize how bleak their situation really is.
      BotW and TotK have been such massive successes that older fans are a tiny minority now. Around 16% to be more precise (classic 3D Zelda fans games sold on average 5 million copies, while BotW and almost certainly TotK sold over 30 million).
      Nintendo won't risk alienating 84% of their audience just to try to appeal to the other 16%.

    • @Rauruatreides
      @Rauruatreides 11 місяців тому

      @XanderVJ I could see them adding certain elements for those people, but they almost definitely aren't going to make a game fully based on traditional style since the majority of new fans either weren't interested in those games, and many of those that did try them just found them unplayable due to such a large change in gameplay style.

    I think it depends on what the next generation of Nintendo hardware looks like in terms of gameplay of botw 3. The sales alone for TOTK is enough an argument that botw 3 will come to be. For the story, I would think they are going to explore the ancient hero’s story because how can they not with such a mysterious drop like that. Howwwwever, I think they also care about their old titles that are trapped on old hardware. A remake of alttp (in my perfect world) or any other old titles would be cash money, make returning fans happy, expose newcomers to the series etc etc. I’m putting my money that this will be the rumored non TOTK Zelda news before the end of the year, a one-to-one remake of something.

    My opinion is this! I will admit that I was never really into the hand held Zelda games. Mostly the console versions. The only 3d version I never really loved was Wind Waker. However it was a good game just didn't do it for me. Now ocarina of time was awesome and then came Twilight Princess which was even more awesome 👍! Then came skyward sword which was super sweet just not as good as the other two but close! Then came botw! I have played that game so many times and still find things that I never knew about! What makes that game so awesome is the fact I can build my own way of playing. Now we have totk! Which is botw x 2.5! Oh man it's going to take me months to get me a trail to follow up on this game! I am thinking the direction they are going is great!

    I just hope the Zelda team doesnt pull as loose a story as they have for the past 2 entries ever again. They can still stick to the open world formula while making a more linear, exciting story.
    50% of a story being looking for asynchronous story events that you're not involved in aren't fun. They can absolutely pull off a skyward sword level story in an open world, just tie more game progression to story progression. I find that to be sarisfying, I think most people do as well. Create a more restrictive controlled environment for the story, while still granting that insane level of freedom and exploration outside of it. Xenoblade does it, and even as a series that prioritizes narrative, I think Zelda can learn a little bit from the way the open world balamces with an INSANE story.
    One thing I want to see Aonuma answer is whether he still sees large, puzzle-ridden, labyrinth-like dungeons as a core part of Zelda's DNA.
    I think that TOTK absolutely paves the way forward for how exploration, skill based combat, interactivity with the world, sidequests, and etc ought to feel. I've never played a more alive feeling game in my entire life other than maybe RDR2. TOTK is absolutely phenomenal in those regards.

    I wouldn't mind an open world as long as there are traditional dungeons and dungeon items. Weapons and shields breaking sucks too even with the fuse mechanic. The world doesn't need to be as big either and more of a story and not just memories

    My idea for a new title….
    Legend of Zelda: The Beacon of Hope
    The game should have a dark western cowboy theme like twilight princess but have the vast open layout like breath of the wild and Tears of the Kingdom. The land will be scattered with different ranches, animals, characters, etc… Basically, instead of scattered shrines you will have huge ranches and farms scattered throughout the land that will be apart of the main story but also used for side quests and item fetching for certain goods that you will need throughout the game. Link is considered an average worker until the story and game progresses and by the end of the game he becomes a real cowboy that saves the land from outside intruders. I know this might sound kinda stupid but these were just some thoughts I had. Let me know what y’all think??? ⚔️ 🤠

  • @charleshanson9467

    These games can still be open world with a linear narrative. The tricky part is designing for all the possible orders of completion to make it feel like the Player was doing it in the "correct" order. Like with Tears' five sages and the stories each tells; the Devs would have to write the story divided into five parts but all the parts narrated and animated for every Sage and THEN presented to the player in the right order as the complete dungeons. That's a lot more production for content that may never be seen by the player, unless they chose to replay the game in a different order.
    Same goes for a lot of side Quests/Adventures. Some more built-in adjustment of who says what and when based on the completion of the game. The Newspaper Adventure in TotK is a decent attempt, with the changing news stories as you resolve the issues around Hyrule.
    One thing that bothered me in the game was how it was possible (almost encouraged) to get at all the Tears memories early game, and we were pretty certain of what/who the Zelda sightings were all over Hyrule. But Link never told anyone and you had to play out all the main quests like everyone was too dumb to get it until the Crisis at Hyrule Castle. That non-linear access to the Tears and also the main quests at the same time, and in any order, made for either an awkward story, diminished mystery, or making Link or everyone else seem stupid the whole game.
    In short: the world can be open, but keep more of the story behind triggered quests that let the player experience the mystery and narrative in a more linear way. I feel like few would complain that they have to complete quests in a particular order that then result in a great story. yet we'd still have all the tons of adventuring in caves, Depths, islands and the like to explore, find bit of obscure lore, and find cool treasure and rewards. There's a better middle ground between 100% linear and 100% open.

    • @handsoaphandsoap
      @handsoaphandsoap 10 місяців тому +1

      I think TotK mostly works, if there had just been a few adjustments. They should've made two versions of the cutscenes with the ancient sages, one as is in the game and another where we cut out the retreading of the backstory so instead of getting the same backstory four times, we just get it once and can yada yada it for the remaining three. I also think Mineru needs to be completely locked away from the player until you complete the Hyrule Castle part of the game, far too many players ended up stumbling upon her by accident (I was one such player) so when the main quest is able to catch up to the player, the game is kind of just wasting their time by making you do the whole ring ruin plotline, and you don't get the proper buildup the devs wanted for Mineru's story. It would've been easy to just block off the door to her mask until you make the thunderstorm dissipate. That way, you can still stumble upon the Thunderhead Isles and the Construct Factory but don't actually trigger the questline that gives you Mineru.
      I also agree that the way we access the memories isn't great, I'm all for non-linear storytelling but I bet most TotK players unlocked the memories very early in their playthrough so the main storyline of the game ends up being condensed to the first few hours of gameplay. BotW's system I felt was a little bit better as you're more likely to naturally stumble upon the memories' locations since they're not nearly as noticeable but it kind of has the opposite problem, where players are less likely to find them early on so most of that story will be condensed to the final hours of your playthrough instead. I remember when I played, I kind of just forgot about them until the end when I was finishing up my last few side quests and decided to put in the effort to find the memories. I didn't really stumble upon any of them during my playthrough and ended up basically just grinding through them in the endgame instead of naturally discovering them throughout my time with the game.

  • @handsoaphandsoap

    I think that when they say they're "not looking at the older games" they don't mean in terms of story or structure, but rather that they don't want to repeat the same design choices from previous titles and would rather come up with new ideas in terms of gameplay and storytelling, and this has kind of always been the main philosophy of the Zelda games. Each one has major differences between each other that make them starkly different experiences as opposed to other gaming franchises that are practically indistinguishable from one another. OoT is very different from Wind Waker which is very different from Skyward Sword which is very different from BotW. In comparison, could you really distinguish the difference between the various CoD titles out there aside from slightly different graphics? Even franchises that do shake things up inbetween games are nowhere near the level of Zelda. Kingdom Hearts f.e. usually shakes up the gameplay between the different titles but for the most part, playing them feels about the same with the exception of Chain of Memories that has a completely different battle system and KH3 which saw the move to Unreal (and even that is still pretty similar to past titles in terms of gameplay). I like that they're sticking to this philosophy, I would much rather see them try new ideas and shake up the formula instead of getting 10 BotW's in a row, it's what >keeps the franchise fresh and exciting.

    • @gavinferguson2938
      @gavinferguson2938 9 місяців тому +1

      @@TriforceTrendsI think totk was partly built from the combining ideas of skyward sword and botw. It shows that the zelda team arnt afraid of combining ideas from past titles with newer ones to form new original ones. After all, "99% of art is derivative. That last 1% is whats found in between" - Yoko Taro
      Botw gave us hints as to what the seque would be about through its physics engine. Totk gave us improved NPC dynamism, combat and interactivity.
      So my idea is, combine something like Majoras Mask moon time counter and a sparser, expanded or vastly altered map such as Past/Future Hyrule Termina, Lorule.etc or perhaps a new land entirely. Vatti as the main villain and with a gameplay focus on more dynamic NPC's of which a few you can pay to help you out in the open world combat temporarily or you can find a few limited NPCs / side characters tied to side quest who are free, significantly stronger than their paid counterparts and have items necessary for completing dungeons. The hook? You can hire ALOT of NPCs to help you out at the same time. Instead of being limited to 4 sages like in totk the limit could be say 20. Combine this new world and NPC dynamism with disabling climbing would make for a more linear controlled story/progression system while also allowing for more 'open' (literal use of the word) exploration. The benefit of all this would be that replayability value would be down to how each individual player chooses to construct their party before facing vatti or whoever as each combination could yield different results, effects, buffs .etc while the larger, sparser and more curated map with the disabled climbing would support the expanded party size. The time counter limits the side quest characters Link can have in his party so he must race to gather as many as he can while optimizing their abilities for his use against the final boss.

    huh. Surprised pikachu face moment, i got mentioned.
    I'm going to tell everyone something which could either bring hope or be a gut wrenching punch. The next zelda is probably going to be different from both tears and classic. Zelda has a tendency of changing a lot between games, each era of 3D zelda really don't have anything more than the core aspects the same about them. We might get something which satisfies you and we might not, but if you want to enjoy the future of zelda dungeons stop asking what old ground they can retread to make you happy, ask what new things Nintendo can do with dungeons to make you happy.

    I think you're right here. I think not being 'concerned with the past' is a double-edged statement, one that is directed both at Ocarina of Time and its subsequent games as well as Breath of the Wild and its sequel, while a lot of people seem to want to believe it's just a one-way comment.
    I think the idea of the future games restricting the climbing is onto something, but given what I think really separates fans of one type of gameplay or the other, I think the play might be to give people a choice between A: Allow climbing or B: Do not allow climbing, with a world designed to play into either choice. In the A path, your experience would be defined by the challenges set in front of you, while in the B path, you'd have a lot of extra choices at every turn. Just offering freedom, I think, is not an 'everything pill' for all types of gamers, but rather, a choice between freedom and limitations would be needed to keep Zelda's appeal broad.
    An example would be giving you a split item upgrade, one that opens up more open paths like climbing gauntlets, and one that instead opens up more linear paths, like golden gauntlets. Climb your way around a temple, or go in through the front door. The key would be having a player commit to a choice, rather than giving them all options all the time, which would just be the same thing as picking the 'B' choice every time.

But they could make smaller zelda games likes like they've done in the past for handheld but use that to explore vastly different ideas of linear style zelda titles to help fill in the big gap between the mainline releases because judging by how long tears was in development for its going to be while before we see the next big mainline title. I’d prefer if the series kept the massive world but brought back progressional weapons/items, classic dungeons, and an actual order to do things. Also, I’m a cliche but I hate the weapon degradation system. No weapon felt relevant if I had to purposely save the good ones or backtrack to find an octorok to fix it.

    I love botw totk but I don’t think it’s a bad idea to continue this style of Zelda as long as they improve on story and dungeons which are the only thing that were done better previously
    The puzzles themselves weren’t better but moreso the structure and atmosphere.
    That said it’s clear most people want botw/totk style of Zelda nowadays when you consider their level of success compared to SSHD which sold okay but botw fans mostly didn’t care.

      Tbf ocarina of Time and link to the past were identical except for the use of time travel and it being 3D, those traditional 2d games were still being made after 3D zelda came around for a while, just not for the home consoles

    BotW was about freedom, TotK perhaps moreso. The trouble with too much freedom is that solutions start to feel unearned ... like cheesing a " tough but fair" boss battle.
    I fear that I ruined BotW for myself by doing master mode on my first playthrough. I quickly learned that environmental damage was not enough to bring down the spongy enemies, which would heal before I could move in to finish them off. I also learned that few fights were worth the weapons I would break. I became very good at going around challenges: Zora's domain had a lightning guantlet which I skipped.
    TotK makes this worse by giving me a hoverbike.

    is good for people having freedom and find the same asset copy-pasted 60 times in the overworld. it's horrible that in a zelda, everything you have to see you basically see in the first few hours of the game and then it's just things repeated over and over again. with the old formula the game lasted less time but at least every time there was a new discovery. i like the freedom of the game, but if for that we have to sacrifice the story and every content has to be thought to be skipped well...then we are facing the death of the zelda franchise.

      I think it’s criminally unfair to call it the death of the franchise, those assets being copy and pasted 60 times still have puzzles, and a lot of those puzzles are (subjectively) some of my favourites in the whole series, with shrines in TotK themselves making up more puzzles than we’ve seen ever before in 1 Zelda game, each with their own different quirks. Not to mention the backpedaling the Zelda team have definitely done, especially with dungeons, are they perfect? No, but are they testing the waters? Yeh, and we know they are listening to the complaints… mostly, which means it’s onwards and upwards as I feel it always has been with the Zelda series

      @@TriforceTrends I really hope I'm wrong. I really hope they try to find a balance between the old formula and the new formula. the best thing would be to follow the grammar dictated by myamoto with a link to the past and ocarina of time (which for me are the best combination of storytelling, freedom and linearity) with an open-map and non-openworld approach. the thing is i'm a bit pessimistic, the game i described would clearly be a masterpiece but it wouldn't sell as much as an openworld sandbox. in a purely corporate and sales vision, the path that would make sense would be that of the sandbox and this is why I speak of the death of the franchise, because all those elements that we loved about Zelda for 30 years would no longer be there to make room for new games that yes, they are beautiful, but they don't have the feel of Zelda. after all, even the first zelda was linear.

    It makes sense though. Look at the sales number. If people wanted to send the message of traditional Zelda’s. Skyward Sword should’ve sold the same amount as Breath and Tears. It didn’t. The message was sent. People want the open world Zelda. Granted, Skyward Sword was a niche game that wouldn’t move the needle. It was the worst game from the library to select to see if a market for a linear Zelda was there. I would’ve done a remake of Ocarina of Time using Breath engine, and go from there as the testing waters. But don’t think Skyward Sword wasn’t released to gauge the market, it clearly was.

    • @TriforceTrends
      @TriforceTrends  11 місяців тому +3

      It definitely was released to gauge the market, and it ended up selling more than the original did on the Wii, and they made it more accessible for the switch players too, so that does make sense
      It definitely was out to gauge the market, and I don’t think it sold badly all things considered and considering the time spent porting the game probably, not to mention its polarising reputation even on release and… INTERESTING marketing technique for the re-release, it’s not like it was hyped up like breath or tears

      It sold 4 million, now compared to 31 million that Breath did. It’s not even close. I do think it’s a polarizing game to be released. Ocarina reputation alone would’ve helped sales. My guess with an Ocarina of Time ground up remake would’ve been 10 million due to the 3DS version selling 7 million. It wouldn’t be Breath numbers, but it would’ve open the door for more linear. I do think Skyward Sword was sent to send the message of “You don’t really want these Zelda games anymore”. They were just smart enough to attempt mask it. They knew it wouldn’t be a massive it, and they knew the reputation of the game would discredit it, and the praise of Breath would overshadow it.
      It was a smart choice to release it. I bought it, and I love the changes to the game, but I fully know if I were to show my 13 year old daughter it, she wouldn’t get past the first area without feeling like she’s trapped, and that’s something to consider for the younger generation. She’ll play the hell out of Link Between Worlds, Breath of The Wild, Majora’s Mask, and Tears because do the freeing nature of those games. She likes the freedom approach. So as someone who is 35. Seeing a franchise I love evolve to fit what she likes is quite amazing.
      It sucks on some ways though. I would love to show her the Sandship dungeon. But I know the lead up to it would ruin her enjoyment of it.

      I'd have to disagree, I don't think SS was released to see how much of a demand there is for classic Zelda. 3D zeldas, apart from the N64 titles, got their remakes released with a clear pattern on the 10th year anniversary basically, and you don't need a remake to determine that selling 30 million is leagues above anything the older games could ever sell. And as you said, Skyward sword is a terrible choice to guage interest. Besides, it's pretty clear that the team just doesn't want to make those older games anymore.

    • @Gokulosestoavirus
      @Gokulosestoavirus 11 місяців тому

      @@saber7534agree that the team didn’t want to make linear games. But they like numbers. On paper if a game from a franchise is selling 4 million with an established old formula, and you compare it to the newer formula selling triple of that. You as a business person is going to go with the newer formula.

    • @saber7534
      @saber7534 11 місяців тому +1

      @CarlinwouldhateAndrewTate There's a lot more to things than just numbers. The metroid 2 remake for example sold poorly, still got metroid dread a few years later. Skyward Sword, like the aforementioned remake, had a lot of factors which anyone could tell you would lead to a poorly selling game. Skyward Sword has a very bad reputation itself and everyone knew that, if they were remaking a game to guage interest that game wouldn't have been Skyward Sword. Especially since even among the older entries in the series, Skyward Sword has weak sales. Skyward Sword HD sales being a million ahead of Wind Waker HD sales, despite the latter having a market ten times as small, speaks volumes.
      Besides, I don't think the numbers really have that much to do with the direction Zelda is going. Sure, Nintendo will probably want to keep Zelda on this track, but these titles also have the caveat of being a lot more demanding to make. At the end of the day, Zelda is going in this direction because that's what the developers want, not because of the sales.
