  • Are you in the camp that thinks that Tears of the Kingdom's Dungeons are BAD? Well I don't think they are at all, this video is my explanation as to why I don't think that dungeons in TOTK are bad at all, in fact I think a few of them are some of the best in the entire series... But there are a lot of reasons why you might like a dungeon, for it's theme, atmosphere, combat, puzzles, bosses, and all that other good stuff, so it's time to delve into my thoughts in each dungeon in Tears of the Kingdom... And why I believe they're WAY better than the divine beasts.

    SPOILER WARNING:
    I’ve seen so many people telling me that the spirit temple isn’t on this list and I “missed” it, I didn’t miss it, I just don’t wanna spoil anything for people, I know that if I hadn’t finished the game yet and I saw an additional chapter to the 4 dungeons that I already know of, I’d be pretty sad, I cater the videos to what I’d like to see without being spoilt at this stage
    Now that we’re here though, I wouldn’t add much with it LOL, I thought it was fine, like a 6 or 7/10 given I liked the boss a lot and the individual puzzles were nice

    Disclaimer: TO EACH THEIR OWN
    The dungeons (IMO) have a lot of good features but feel discombobulated. The re-used BotW mechanic of getting 4 or 5 unlocks, then getting the boss feels lame to me. I don't know why finding the boss key felt more epic, but it just did.
    I agree that the temple puzzles felt like 2 shrines slapped together. Uninspired puzzles. Uninspired themes.
    The only Temple that I felt came even close to living up to a legacy temple were the Wind Temple (mainly thanks to epic boss theme music that turned a fun boss fight into a very memorable event) and the Lightning Temple.
    Sadly, there weren't enough such moments throughout all the temples.
    Traditional tropes like map, compass, keys, boss key, unique toy, etc are deeply missed, but even all those things couldn't save these Temples. The complexity and imagination simply aren't there, sorry. 🤷‍♂️

      Honestly, part of me feels that the classic Zelda dungeon is simply incompatible with this type of game. I mean, ascend alone makes it so that any previous dungeon would be completely invalidated as you could just constantly skip puzzles

      I do not think we played the same classic zeldas. Old 3D dungeons were ripe with reuse of incredibly simple and generic puzzles, I can't even count how many times I have had to push a block onto a switch. Yeah they had some good puzzles but so does the breath era games, and the puzzle design in my opinion has overall gone up for dungeons. I'm not even going to get into eye Switch puzzles, only like ten percent of them were actually puzzles.
      All in all, you can complain about totks puzzles lacking imagination, but in reality modern dungeon puzzles actually have more thought put into them on average.

    my lovingly very negative take: In my opinion all of the dungeons feel way too small, at best slightly larger than the divine beasts, but in a lot of ways still feeling like a couple of shrine puzzles mashed together. I really do not like how its the same structure as finding the terminals, it struck as incredibly lazy and boring. I was hoping for dungeons at least twice as big as what we got. It's honestly amazing to me how small and recycled a lot of this feels given how long it took to develop.

      I mean, the dungeons in TOTK are actually about the same length as the average 3D dungeon. Took a look at how long it took me to beat the last 3D dungeon I played and it took me about 45 minutes with factors such as hero mode and dying being taken into account. As for the puzzles, most of the puzzles in each dungeon revolve around mechanics specifically tuned for said dungeon, like say the icicles and boats with stormwind arc. If anything it's pushing the puzzle creativity above the standard, I wonder how many times the puzzle of bomb cracked wall or shoot eye switch was copied in traditional dungeons? Twilight Princess for example legitimately made switches which are just "use spinner here to activate something" and slapped in onto the game calling it a puzzle.

    • @galaxsija4591
      @galaxsija4591 11 місяців тому +2

      @@saber7534 4 totk dungeons that each took me about 20-30 minutes to complete. TP had what, 7 dungeons depending on how you count em? Closer to an hour to complete each one. I don't think the spinner is the greatest example because it's really more of a traversal item, and while I agree that the items in TP had limited use cases, they created more memorable and narratively impactful experiences than the open-ended "solve this however you want" approach in which every puzzle ends up being a little too easy because there are so many possible solutions. You're not gonna convince me that TOTK dungeons are on par with Twilight Princess lol but to each their own I guess. It's interesting you raised TP as the example, that is literally my favorite Zelda so of course I prefer those dungeons haha

      @@saber7534 i respect your point of view though! and the individual puzzles aren't necessarily bad, to me the dungeons mostly just felt like divine beasts with unique paintjobs. The whole game really felt like a doubling down on some things that decidedly did not work in my opinion, rather than the return to form i was hoping for, or a true blending of the old and new Zelda formulas. The obsession with non-linearity is where TOTK loses me. I love all Zelda games and this is no exception, but it's definitely the most disappointing just because expectations were high and in my view, not met given the enormous development time.

    I played and beat the Forest Temple the night before TOTK released. I liked TOTK dungeons, but when I look back at some of the highlights of OOT or Twilight Princess, they just don’t hold a candle imo. I think that’s fair, there’s a good chance, a very good one even, that I’m overrating these dungeons because they simply have a theme at all, the wind temple in particular had me tearing up at times so maybe I’m overrating that one, and the reason why they evokes emotion for me was because of the wait for the game I think

    I think the main element what at least I miss in the TotK Dungeons is the puzzle box feeling the older games had. It is a little bit hard to describe, but the old dungeons felt like coherent structures you needed to unravel bit by bit. This came mostly because the were designed in a way that you found something in one part of the dungeon which you needed somewhere completly else. And thereby the game forced ou to make a mental map of what is where in the dungeon. In TotK everything is basically in arms reach of where you need it (even if you not "break" the puzzle), which generates the feeling that the dungeon is simply 4-5 puzzles distributed among a few rooms.
    But i have to say its obviously a big improvement in comparision to BotW. But for the next Zelda i hope they put more ressources to the dungeons again. The open world is cool and I certainly do not want to miss certain elements such as Overworld bosses ever again ..... but i would happely trade the 150 shrines and lets say 20% of the overall world size for 8 proper dungeons in the world.....
    Btw, the dungeon bosses are certainly back in a quality i like. Colgera and Queen Gibdo are one of my all time favourites especially with the music .....

    I mostly don't like how in many cases (looking at you, Water and half of Wind) you can just blindly follow a map to where you need to be. "Traditional" dungeon maps and compasses weren't nearly as generous, with dungeons designed to make you explore every nook and cranny with your own eyeballs, and often "big picture" challenges, not just isolated puzzles.
    The other shortcoming of ToTK's dungeons is the lack of action-oriented challenges. Where are the cage fights? Where are the agility courses?

    I'm generally in the same camp as you are when it comes to the dungeon rankings, though I personally felt that the Wind Temple was a more enjoyable overall experience than the Lightning Temple, if only for the atmosphere and grand scale of the build-up to it making the final descent into the dungeon proper feel like a huge moment. That said, they all fall short for me in a couple of very crucial ways that contribute to TotK being just shy of a 10/10 game in my personal ranking.
    The reuse of the terminals concept --- a result, I think, of absolute commitment to letting the player do almost anything in almost any order --- is a real miss for me: imo, a multi-stage puzzlebox is far more satisfying than a few short and more or less unrelated puzzles. It's sort of like being given spherified tomato-water caviar, Iberico ham, and spinach foam on a few tiny squares of brioche toast with aioli when you're really craving a good old-fashioned deli-style BLT sandwich: all the ingredients are there, sort of, and it might be delicious, but it doesn't really satisfy the craving. I really wish I could tell the dev team that sometimes a little forced linear progression in a dungeon is actually a good thing, since it can help contribute to a greater overall sense of achievement upon completion.
    The fact that the primary source of combat in the dungeons was constructs, rather than region-specific and dungeon-specific enemies, was also a real let-down, as was the lack of region-specific enemy types outside of the Gerudo Desert in general. In that same vein, the lack of mini-bosses in the dungeons themselves --- as opposed to overworld dungeon minibosses like the Sludge Like and Moragia --- hurts the overall dungeon experience for me.
    The Water Temple, especially, felt like a huge missed opportunity. With how much fun the low-gravity platforming is, I would have loved to have had a similar sort of build-up in the sky but longer and with more in the way of indoor areas to take advantage of things like jumping from wall to wall in order to ascend --- maybe with a huge tower ascending high into the heavens to make the experience feel majestic in the same way as the Wind Temple's lead-up does --- and having the Temple split between the sky area and an expansive, semi-underwater, puzzlebox style dungeon area underneath the Waterworks. I'd have loved ascending higher and higher, solving puzzles along the way, and defeating Mucktorok only to find out that it was just a mini-boss, that the true source of the sludge was elsewhere, and have the game essentially say "You thought that was the Water Temple? Nah, that was just the /entrance/ to the Water Temple."

    My big criticism of all the dungeons (and you left out Hyrule Castle as a dungeon) are the instantly available maps, that also tell you precisely where to go. As you mentioned, there aren't a lot of difficult enemies and zero mini-bosses to overcome along the way to each marked target. So environmental puzzles are the only actual challenges - which will be cheesed immediately, or later, and forever. Being given the locations where to go for zero effort, and with little as far as obstacles in the way, makes for lackluster gameplay. I had fun, and I completed almost all the puzzles as intended. (I won't say I cheesed some in the Lightning temple, I probably did them a far harder way cause I missed some critical rooms to open). I agree with your rankings too. But the free maps, and as you said no keys, made for just under the amount of work that makes it worthwhile.
    That said, yeah, Sidon's ability is garbage. The Water Temple should have been part of the Waterworks, and the boss should have been aquatic - IN the water. Sidon's ability should have granted super swimming...or maybe timed WALKING on water, or underwater swimming + attack, ya know, something very unexpected from BotW. Plus completing that Sage could have opened up a ton more areas to explore all over the map. Just like Tulin's ability lets you explore the Sky a bit more, and Yunobo lets you mine more, etc.

    The key for a zelda game to have good dungeons is variety in their structure. That's why I think the lightning temple sticks out for a lot of people, it starts linear and then opens out, where as the others are all very open from the start.
    There are much more types of dungeons in the older zelda games that aren't get the 4 things to get to the boss. There's very linear dungeons eg shadow temple oot. As well as dungeons where you think of the dungeon as a whole complete eg ancient cistern, Oot water temple.
    It would have been nice if for some of them if you got the ability halfway through the dungeon and if they had mini bosses. More random secrets to find would also help, most of the dungeons felt too short, except the fire temple, so they could have been a bit longer. Whilst the themes of the dungeons were decent, I still thought they lacked the personality and strength of the themes for the older dungeons the fire temple didn't feel like a city and the water temple didn't seem like anything. A good start tho.

    I’m a new fan. I played Wind Waker first but found it impenetrable (too hard). BotW was the first Zelda game I liked (played over 1500 hrs). I went back and finished Link’s Awakening (pure pain), then tried Wind Waker again (failed) and Minish Cap (failed). Now this game, and I adore it.
    I’m almost 50 and had no experience with puzzle games-minimal experience with games at all. I didn’t understand any of the tropes of gaming. For me the puzzles are very difficult, but made easier the closer they adhere to real physics. In the old games, the items and abilities feel arbitrary to me and I cannot guess. So I can get completely stymied by something like not realizing I can climb one particular type of wall when I’ve been unable to climb any others ever. And completing the old games with a guide is extremely unsatisfying. I also find the old bosses extremely difficult and demoralizing. Not seeing whether I am damaging them at all makes it so hard to know what is working. Sometimes I can’t even tell if the phase is changing, and at first, I didn’t know bosses had phases, so…
    BotW and TotK had very challenging navigation puzzles for someone not versed in the tropes but even more importantly, I thought they were fun even when I got help, because I absolutely could not figure out the Divine Beasts on my own. I managed TotK without help, but only because the physics were so good and I know how real life works. I absolutely missed many “intended” solutions.
    Anyway, the perspective of one new fan. And I have spent a lot of money on Zelda, now. I’ve bought 3 switches, 3 copies of BotW, and will probably buy one more switch and physical copy of TotK before the new Switch comes out (for modding). I think Nintendo is very happy to grow its fanbase and will stick to the formula that brings in new people until it no longer does. But I will say that I *have* learned enough that I’d be willing to try Twilight Princess or even Ocarina or Majora’s Mask if they’re remade. I’d probably fail again, but I’ve watched many vids about them and the stories and characters were fun. I just have a hard time seeing the old games’s graphics. I can’t even play the Switch in handheld mode, my eyes are so bad, so…I am hoping for those remakes!
    Fun vid, as ever. I generally agree, though I always disagree with UA-camrs’ complaints about what is easy. To me, it just sounds like flexing. But I’m used to it now.

    I definitely don’t think the dungeons were bad, but I was fairly disappointed by them. Mainly because I just don’t like the Divine Beast structure to these, but I actually also found the theming to be pretty boring (at least visually). Especially since they’re all still just have the most basic names, just “Element Temple” for all of them. (I was also pretty disappointed that there were again only four dungeons in the game)
    I did at least really like the Lightning Temple just because it felt more linear and better structured

    IMHO all the Dungeons in TOTK are a step up from BOTW's dungeons, but all of them still fall short of most dungeons from past titles. The Lighting Temple was the best because it had a good buildup to the dungeon and the dungeon itself had good aesthetics, unique mechanics, and a quality boss fight. The Wind Temple was next mostly because of the lead up to the dungeon and the boss than anything. Low gravity and the boss were good in the water temple, but otherwise completely unremarkable. The Fire temple i subverted nearly everything by just climbing everywhere, and the boss fight was merely decent. At least all of them had a unique design, and boss fight this time around. But none of them compare to past dungeons puzzles, Mini bosses, items, and bosses all rolled into one area, and Im not a fan of the formula for every dungeon in TOTK still being activate X amount of stations to unlock the final boss.

    are they better than the divine beasts though ? Most of the problems lie in them completely forgoing linear progression and making dungeons/whatever you want to call them with one third of the content of past titles. Then not only do we have one third less content in each dungeon but only 4 dungeons overall. Then disconnected random puzzles everywhere else? I guess thats what they're trying to say with the shrines.. we gave you the content just all over the place - and probably to suit more casual play styles and keep optional the more challenging puzzles. Probably could use a more "get good" mentality as the more casual players always have the option to just run around anyway.
    They've done much better with theming in the dungeons at least, which is extremely important to the charm and immersion of the experience. But I'm not in any of these places long enough.
    You dont want to totally scrap the divine beasts because the puzzles involving moving the entire temple are so cool. A development of the puzzle box idea you see in Snowhead, Stone Tower, and water temples. I like trying to figure out THE ENTIRE TEMPLE as a macro puzzle. And how you can effect the shape of the entire building should not be scrapped.

    • @TriforceTrends
      @TriforceTrends  11 місяців тому +1

      The problem with affecting the entirety of a building is how do you do that thematically? Gameplay wise it’s great, but thematically how does it work since the Zelda team are sticklers for that stuff
      As I said later on in the video, I believe they’re better than the divine beasts because personally I’m looking for atmosphere above all else in my Zelda dungeons, these dungeons delivered that tenfold, some… FAR better than others haha

    • @nevercanyoucant
      @nevercanyoucant 11 місяців тому

      @@TriforceTrends yeah I'm looking for atmosphere heavily too.. and world building. But I do think a lot of the thematic or world building explanation for total dungeon puzzles can be explained easily... as in water levels, or rotating a central column, or any other ways the might shape the dungeon so you can reshape or reposition it - its a world with magic after all. But I mean yeah, it would be very cool to see a development of better ways to explain why/how the dungeon is moveable.

  • @JackCashStuff
    @JackCashStuff 11 місяців тому

    My biggest problem with them is they're too short, and you get the "item" (sage power) from the beginning. I don't necessarily mind the terminal formula even. Many classic zelda dungeons have you visiting multiple matching points of interest to open the way forward. The thing is that after you find four ghosts/free all the gorons/find four monkeys etc etc, the path you open leads to a miniboss and an item that then recontextualizes the areas you already explored as well as opening up new ones. You can't really have that experience in a totk dungeon because you already have the dungeons "item" before you even enter, and at that sidon and rijus are only used to activate the terminals and are never required at any other point in the dungeon. Sidon's isn't even useful in the boss fight. Any given totk dungeon would be half a dungeon in older zelda games.
    Some of the dungeons make up for this a little by having a longer buildup section blurring the line between dungeon and overworld or having an interesting integration of the sages abilities. Fire and lightning temple have their size and complexity working in their favor. They all make steps in the right direction but not uniformly.

  • @raysay1818

    I think i would have liked more dungeons as well. There are a lot of locations that could easily have a themed dungeon located there like what if the chasm in the great deku tree lead to a forest temple or a darkness temple underneath the typhlo ruins or by the ancient cemetary in the depths or in kakariko villages well. So many potential dungeons and themes for them that like they didnt need to limit it to the amount that they did.

  • @Carawing
    @Carawing 11 місяців тому

    The main gripe I have with Botw+ dungeons is the length of them and (like you said), the mechanic of getting 4 or 5 things to open the way to the boss. The mechanic itself is actually really cool, but I don't like how every dungeon has the same shtick.
    (Let's say Minish cap (sorry, it's the first Zelda that comes to mind since my GF played it some time ago.), you have such variety of dungeons. Like okay, the introductary first, the more linear one at the end, a very open ended (the one where you get the mits), or even the one that's just totally different (Temple of dropplets; where you use the Boss key in the first 5 minutes.)
    So to sum up, the new kind of dungeons fall flat for me, since each lock of the dungeon is not connected to the dungeon, but is there by itself. You don't have the dungeons where you have to understand it as a whole (Eagle's nest (Link's awakening), any water dungeon (damn I love those) ). You don't get "gauntlets" as I call them, which are usually the last or second last dungeons (Like Turtle rock and similar ones). Personaly, even if TotK dungeons had really amazing atmosphere (accept the Zora one, that just sucks . . .), I don't believe you can have a got theme if they all work the same way. You know what you'll have to do and the dungeons are just "one of them" and not their own thing. (Example of what I mean, could be the Stone Tower Temple.)
    Sorry, I know I'm a bit all over the place, but the thoughts are still there. I love TotK and it's a huge step up from BotW, but the dungeons still lack IMO.

      I mean to be fair, tears did wrap up most of said beasts problems. You can aestheticially tell them apart, they have actual enemies which are capable of dealing damage, and they have a wide selection of mechanics. Sure stuff like the map being too informative and the objective system being too blatant and loud still exist but all in all tears fixed more of the beasts issues than it kept.

    Despite not being the hardest temple even though I got so stuck on one puzzle that I had to look up the solution, I'll admit I have a bit of a bias to the Lightning Temple since I grew up playing Tomb Raider games and watching The Mummy series starring Brendan Fraiser. This temple felt like it was tailor made for me. The boss was the hardest out of all of the bosses with enemies swarming you while you dealt with the Queen. It's easily my favorite.
    Fire Temple was the hardest and I had to look up solutions for more than one puzzle (mostly because I suck at reading maps). But, the challenge and reuse of carts really made it stand out. I just wish Yunobo would have shut the hell up about Zelda while his people of Goron City are suffering because of him (he was under mind control but he doesn't acknowledge their at all until you finish the temple. What a wasted opportunity for characterization.) And that boss fight was pathetically easy. Mind you, I had a fairly strong weapon so it practically deleted its health but getting the Marbled Gohma into a vulnerable state as well getting out of its explosive traps was way too easy using Yunobo.
    Wind Temple is among the easiest of the temples (though I probably did get lucky finding one entrance to a floor) but it makes up for that in sheer spectacle. The build up to it was amazing. The ascent from Hebra Mountains with the various platforms and ships' "trampolines" made for a fun experience, capped off by the breathtaking dive into the clouds of the Wind Temple itself. And that boss fight. Whoo boy. Like I said before, it's easy. But, the ✨spectacle✨. I don't remember the last time I experienced a boss battle centered around free falling which definitely made it unique. And Oh. My. GOSH. THAT BOSS THEME MUSIC! Whoever created this stuck their feet, calves, cankles, elbows, necks.....everything into this song. This temple is the reason I'm still salty why we can't create multiple save files that aren't Autosaves. I would *love* to revisit this temple and boss again (I know you can fight the boss again in the Depths but it's not the same). As my very first boss, I may be a bit biased but, whoo boy, did it leave a great impression on me even if I wish the boss was a bit more challenging.
    Water Temple......😒
    Coming from the Wind Temple (especially since this was my second temple), this was a *massive* let down. It rehashed ascending from the village to the Temple (making me think this was going to be the trend of the temples going forward) and the puzzles were even easier than the Wind Temple's. And it didn't have the benefit of spectacle to make up for it. The boss was uniquely goofy and the theme was fittingly so as well (and pretty catchy) but even then the praise isn't....that noteworthy. Easily the worst of the temples.

    The fire Temple I kind of feel is terrible despite a fantastic atmosphere, the tracks feel unintuitive and while I found everything by cheesing entirely new bridges to nowhere Yunobo's AI not understanding ramps made some locks really annoying despite not being truly "hard" I often cheesed things there only to figure out the proper solution and still having no idea how I was supposed to actually think that would work not to mention what would convince me to do anything that complicated, especially with the stakes presented the puzzles were just badly designed and not organic... And I say that as someone who drove up by car when I could have flown and skipped the hill.

      The Water temple itself could have used more variety like a broken pitcher or a hydraulic lift... And the muck paths should have done something after as aquaducts instead of holding just a trickle of water despite previously having sludge falls... And why is the boss so tanky? The Wind Temple boss is literally just threading the needle while water just won't die despite being based on the 1-hp creature everywhere else, it's like if they made an evermean a growth on an Octorok and added the tree's hp to the base monster then kept the "leaf" Respawn rate on the tree.... The thing tanks more than Molduga and has a more annoying speed and escape reflex.
      The ancient works and lead up to the water and wind temples are great though., they just need a little more to do.

  • @melimsah

    The Spirit Temple should've been mentioned. It had a great build up, and then spreading out to grab pieces of the construct was just such a cool way to do the "do the 4-5 things to unlock the boss door" mechanic. And from a story lore position you can't beat it. And the fact that (unless you're like me and you went "what's in those clouds there?" and did it early), it's a surprise dungeon if you thought you'd be going after Ganondorf after completing the 4 dungeons.
    Definitely agree about the water temple. It would have made more sense for that underwater bit beforehand to be the water temple, and maybe that was going to be the case at some point? And re: Sidon's powers, with ALL of the sages, I wish there was another way to trigger their powers than finding them on the battlefield and hitting A. If there was a way to hotkey into their powers, I think Sidon's could have been more helpful.

Also, once you finished a Divine Beast, it would go aim towards the castle, and you could see it from the whole map ! [Forward: I barely used the Zonai Arm techniques, only when necessary. I only started to play around with builds, AFTER I beat Ganondorf the first time, which I only did after beating all 5 temples]
    I was disappointed in the Wind Temple. Meeting Tulin (this character definitely saved that section from being an absolute loss) and all the buildup, before you made way to the dungeon was cool, but from the moment on you jumped up those ships to the boss fight...nah...everything about it was lame in my opinion. The boss fight was cool tho. Easy, but was definitely epic.
    On the other hand, I kind of disagree with the cheesability of the Fire Temple. I played around a bit and sure, there are portions that are cheesable, but also portions, that are not. The structure of the Fire Temple is how I wanted a dungeon to be.
    And Marbled Gohma is my favorite boss in the game. I had so much fun fighting it. My favorite dungeon of them all, definitely.
    The Lightning Temple was just screaming "I'm the perfect dungeon", perfect and very long build-up (the secret hide-out was so charming!), the entrance to the dungeon reminded of Skyward Sword and the feeling inside was also fine. It just felt short, as the puzzles were so closely connected that you could solve them all together in maybe less then 20 minutes (still better then playing doodlejump-3d and then just activating 3 turbines... yeah I really don't like the Wind Temple xD). Boss was ok the first time around. And I have to replay the game to find out, weither or not you can skip the whole dungeon by climbing up the temple outside and entering the hole....
    The Water Temple was also lame, but I love the build-up. And I agree, it's kinda just a spin on the Wind-Temple, but with a little bit more to do. This should have been the Wind Temple. I wouln't have anything to complain lol. The boss fight however was far too cheesable, especially considering it was my fourth boss to encounter. Sidons attack range goes farther than the boss-attack range, as long as you are high enough lol
    Spirit Temple...well...not actually a dungeon... but the "build-up", which was closer to being a dungeon, albeit in multiple buildings in the depths. was reminding me of the Kafei Quest line in MM and some moments in Skyward Sword. While not a good "dungeon", still a fun quest. The boss was unconventional and I'm not a fan of Mineru (I love her as a character, not as an ability). So extremely gimmicky and out of place. Felt like I was playing a Knack and Punch-Out crossover xD
    My Top-List is as follows:
    5. Wind Temple
    4. Water Temple
    3. Spirit Temple

    1. Fire Temple

    I really liked the part of the Wind Temple where you are jumping from platform to platform trying to make your way up to the Wind Temple and at times stopping to figure out where to go next. I generally liked the final bosses. I don't mind the idea of having to unlock terminals but I feel that the dungeons are not complex enough compared to pre-BOTW dungeons. It is difficult to get lost, finding the map is too easy, there aren't mini-bosses that you don't find in other places in the game, and there aren't really sections that are challenging in multiple different ways prior to facing the final boss (the only place you are likely to feel challenged in the puzzles). I would say I enjoyed the wind temple the most and the lightning temple is a close second. I did not enjoy the Fire temple or the water temple. I agree with a lot of people that the water temple should have been in the ancient waterworks. I found that the temples felt too much like a larger shrine with a final boss rather than an adventure of finding your way to the final boss That being said I love both BOTW and TOTK and they are my top 2 video games ever, I just think the temples/dungeons could be improved on.

      The path to the wind temple was pretty amazing. Also loved it. Too bad the temple itself was kinda meh. All temples were. If I had a top 15 of worst dungeons in Zelda games, every single temple from this game and BotW would be in that list.

    I got tired of seeing the same plot point and the same flashback 4 times. No effort was made to obfuscate Puppet Zelda; I knew from the dialogue in Kakariko village that this was an imposter being controlled by Ganondorf. I know Nintendo is keeping the open-world design, but I would advocate for a linear dungeon progression inside that formula. I’m not sure how that works though, in implementation

      @@TriforceTrendsYes, ALttP did it pretty well but modern open world gamers would be up in arms about how much of the Dark World map was story locked by items you had to acquire in a dungeon. There was some freedom in order but not total freedom. You would modernize that formula by story-locking the dungeon alone, not all the lands around it.
      Anyway predict that this will become a trilogy, continuing on Switch 2, and we will see another evolution.
      I say we’re headed to a Trilogy, because thematically there are still too many unanswered questions. There’s also a natural progression to expand the scope and answer those questions.
      It was revealed that Calamity Ganon was basically a phantom conjured by Ganondorf during his imprisonment, as his hatred slowly leaked out.
      If BotW showed a cycle within a cycle, then what about the war between Demon King Ganondorf and the sages? Why couldn’t that conflict be nested inside a larger cycle-a conflict for the Triforce itself.
      Since the Triforce hasn’t been at stake yet, I reason that we have not yet seen the full escalation and there’s another revelation in store. Rauru and Mineru obviously knew much about their history that they did not tell us.

    Without watching the video, my opinion on the dungeons is that they're better than Breath of the Wild's in that they have more personality to them and that makes a difference. They're structured the same way as the Divine Beasts: find five spots to activate, but it's at least different. What I DON'T like is that the ancestors basically tell the same story four times over.

  • @MacZephyrZ
    @MacZephyrZ 11 місяців тому

    This may be a kind of hot take but I actually really liked the Divine Beast, probably in part because I didn't really feel the need to compare them to classic Zelda dungeons amd was able to enjoy them by there own merits. But it's harder for me to seperate ToTK's temples from classic dungeons so I feel a lot more dissapointed by them.
    I really disagree that the Fire Temple especially is much of a step up from the divine beasts, as I felt like navigating that one was a huge headache and was actively kind of unfun.
    Edit: That said I still enjoyed the temples for the most part. It's mainly the fire temple I didn't like and I still think it had redeeming qualities.

    The temples are the biggest weakness of TOTK imho. They are basically the same as the divine beasts in BotW. Way to easy and way to quick to get through. It only took like 15 mins each. I hope they fix this in the next Zelda, I want real temples like in older Zelda games and not these glorified shrines.

  • @thenonexistinghero
    @thenonexistinghero 10 місяців тому

    I would say they are awful. A slight improvement of the first game's dungeons. Not a single one is memorable to me and they're all too formulaic and too easy. And it doesn't really help that cheesing them is much easier than using the intended method a lot of the time. It's all about hitting 5 switches (or bringing 5 things), then go to a center room for the finale. And for 4 of them the structure around them is exactly the same. And many of the cutscenes are pretty much the same with a few lines swapped out and different characters, so that most certainly doesn't help.
    They're pretty decent compared to other games, but they are awful as far as Zelda standards go I'd say. They're relatively short for most part, can be easily cheesed, are just very easy, combat in them with enemies is just dull and boring since the enemies are just dull and boring, have no memorable puzzles, etc. They did a good job with some of the shrines. They should've used that creativity for the dungeons instead. Heck, there isn't even anything worth getting in the dungeons. Just some weapons, shields and bows and you'll have no shortage of those.
    It honestly surrpises me just how bad they are. The dungeons were one of the largest complaints from the original BotW. That game took about 5 years to develop... including making the engine for it and many other things from scratch. You'd think that would have them more time to adress the complaints and actually put some effort into the dungeons this time around. With a humongous 6 years of development time with many of the animations and assets being re-used... they couldn't manage to do it. Honestly I feel like this game is more like an expansion of the first game like we saw back in the day with games like C&C: Red Alert 2 - Yuri's Revenge. Adds as much content as the original game if not a bit more, but is not quite different enough to be considered a full blown sequel in terms of gameplay.
    It's a good game, I'm enjoying it... but in no way does the 6 year development time show. Should've been no more than 3 or so years with what they did end up making.

  • @theoaremevano3227
    @theoaremevano3227 11 місяців тому

    I mainly had hoped they would play more with the conventions of dungeons. BotW changed the idea for the boss key, but then Tears of the Kingdom just stuck to that, and the formula they made, they stuck to so much that even the story script was the same.
    "Young (race-specific noun). That monster was created by Demon King to prevent you from finding my Secret Stone." "Demon King? Secret Stone???" "Many years ago, we faced the Demon King. But he was too powerful, and sexy, and I was unable to (race specific talent) against him." "Then the Sage of Time who you ironically know is Zelda came to me with a request." "Give Link the power of (element)." "From that moment, the future of the (race) was set in stone." etc. XD
    I wish more of the 'typical dungeon design elements' had been treated as a point of distinction, not just the same change to the boss key. The final sage, for example, is an interesting concept for a dungeon item, she just didn't feel as useful as she felt like she should, because you already had these tools available to you and she wasn't that powerful, but the idea of a new take on the dungeon item is neat. Or they could base another dungeon around a unique take on the small keys, or the miniboss, or main boss or the way the Sage communicates.
    I think it'd be cool if the Gerudo sage appeared as a mysterious hostile incarnation, constantly testing you in battle throughout the dungeon. Cases where they've taken 'a dungeon' but changed up one big thing people are used to, like how Snowpeak Ruins was actually lived-in have drawn a lot of praise, and I think there's a lot they could do with this to open up the dungeons and make them different. I also wished to see a dungeon where you have to exit and climb around the outer structure to proceed at certain points or something, given BotW's mechanics. I'd love to see a whole town be a dungeon in some way, with people still living there and a mystery to solve or something like that.

    Great video! Summed up a lot of what I feel when it comes to the dungeons in totk. Loved the wind temple, loved the lightning temple, fire temple was great except it was too easy to cheese a lot of it. The water temple has a huge miss for me. I feel they should have done like the labyrinths, and have part of it be in the sky and then part in the ancient water works. Have them connected and the water works part be more of lowering and raising water, or changing the flow of water to get to certain areas that lead to zonai switches that open up more of the sky portion. Just a huge missed opportunity for a great dungeon. Then the spirit temple… 😔 after putting the construct together and getting to the area and it saying spirit temple my jaw dropped that we were getting a dungeon in the depths… then it was just a boss fight… it should have been a full on dungeon, they created the depths and it was amazing, then not to put an actual dungeon down there was very disappointing. They could have done something like the shadow temple and have an armor set you get that acts as the lense of truth or something. For me that was the biggest disappointment in the game. Hopping DLC will add a real dungeon down there.

    When I did the wind temple and did the 5 puzzles opening it up, it was then I thought: "Im finally going into the wind temple now", I was sure that opened up the temple itself. that says something about it all, the second they called these places "temples" the rating for them went down. They didnt feel like temples and were made in the same spirit as BOTW. they are the same, but with different clothing. How can Nintendo, with this amazing physics engine create something so simple and easy? they have the tools to make the greatest zelda dungeons ever! but they give us this.. and the Spirit temple, dont even mention it. when I saw the letters: "Spirit Temple" my whole body tensed up, I was so happy. and then, just a boring boss fight. I was so incredibly disappointed.
    They have made one of the greatest games ever, but when they have this moments and designs in the game that actually draws out such big disappointments they kind of ruins it for the players. when we think of these games and to play them again, one of the things that will always pop up when we think of it is the disappointments we had when doing these dungeons. the only dungeon who didnt disappoint me where the Lightning Temple, but compared to zelda games in general, that too is only around 4-5/10, and that says something.
    This does not count the build ups to the temples, every zelda game has a build up AND a great temple aftewards. no matter how cool or fun the road to the temples were, its not okay to have such tools and that engine and create something so lackluster. its lazyness and just outright bad directing.
    tho, I give the game itself 9/10. I love the game and I have over 200 hours playing it, its just the dungeons that are an infinite amount of disappointment.
