My Volvo 740 T5 Build - Upgrading My Fuel Pump & Sending Unit
In this video, i upgrade the fuel-sending unit, pump, and connection (Hose to An fitting) to suit the 850 Turbo engine that is going in my 1990 Volvo 740 T5
The pump is a bit on the big side but will suit the needs I have for the time being and when pushing a little bit more out of the engine. It is also good for E85 which i will run with after inspection and registration of the build.

I Bought the Cheapest 3" Stainless Exhaust for My 940 Wagon Because I Totaled my Audi
Переглядів 1,9 тис.3 місяці тому
I had a car accident with my Audi and had to find a quick solution to get a replacement vehicle. I decided to use my Volvo 945 instead, even though it was not part of my initial plan. But this move allowed me to save money and prioritize the 740 project. To drive the 945, I had to pass an inspection, which included testing for emissions. Unfortunately, the car failed the emissions test due to i...

      There is really no need to swap all the fuel lines and rebuild the sending unit to An. The easy thing to do would be to just upgrade the then existing main fuel pump to handle the extra fuel and be done with it. The reason I'm doing it Is because of future flexibility.

    Actually, there are at least two different tensioners that were used on these engines based on their serial number and one tensions clockwise and the other is counterclockwise. Part number T43173 tensions clockwise and part number T43139 tensions counterclockwise. T43173 is Engine No. 3188689 & After and it tensions clockwise and part number T43139 is for Engine No. 3188688 & Before. People also need to know that the procedure is quite a bit different for the engines that use the VVT on the intake and exhaust.

      Hade jag gjort detta idag så hade jag torrisblästrat motorn på någon firma. Men ja det blev en del vatten, pluggade/tejpade allt som gick och var nog med att torka och avfukta efteråt. Men helt optimalt blir det ju inte förstås. Men hårt packat verkstadspapper i insugskanaler och silvertejp liknade på utstickande rör osv funkar en stund iaf :)

    Did you manage to fix it any if so what was causing the problem? Our 945 2.3ti polar has served us very well since 1996. it was our only car for the family of 5 until 2018. it will be replaced this month as it became expensive with the repairs and parts become invcreasingly difficult to source. Also the seats falling apart and the steering wheel is crumbling. Was a very reliable and practical car (all stock) and it hurts a bit to let him go. Cars these days don’t last as long anymore as the 945 did. They aren’t built the same anymore. This Volvo 945 polar was our daily driver and drove every year from Switzerland to Finnland and back.

    • @BackmansGarage
      @BackmansGarage 3 місяці тому

      No, I have not taken the engine apart yet. I will do so in the fall if I have a replacement vehicle for the time it will take. I suspect that there is a problem with either piston-to-wall clearance or a piston pin issue. But it still runs and sounds the same as when I first put it together and doesn't seem to get any worse. No metal in the oil or filter yet, but it sounds terrible. I've had thoughts of swapping out the 945 for a newer car, but every time I use one for an extended period I always feel at home when I get back in the old shitbox 😄

    • @Superbus753
      @Superbus753 3 місяці тому

      @@BackmansGarage another big plus for the 945 is the good turning circle. Even smaller cars of modern build don’t get such good turning circles. Also the view from it is better than most new cars. Especially the thick a pillars in modern cars are obstructing the drivers overview. Yes i understand thats necessary for all the new additional airbags that increase passager safety but still the driver of a 945 can get a better view of its surroundings.

    Btw not ALL of them have the 2 pumps. Mine has only the one in the tank. First i thought it had the 2 pumps, but when i checked the fuel filter/main fuel pump assembly under the drivers seat there was only the filter. I was confused at first but when i read into it it turns out that the regina/rex system has only the one in the tank. Also, for anyone finding their fuel system rotten in their project car: My tank sat there with rotting gas for over 10 years, the sending unit seemed like junk cuz of all the rust. I managed to save it by soaking it in a vinegar-water mix. Cuz why not when its junk anyway...Carefully take it apart when it sat long enough and clean it. New pump and solder in the new cables, saves a ton of money :)

    • @BackmansGarage
      @BackmansGarage 3 місяці тому

      True, volvo went back and fourth with different pump setups. Some had the in tank hp pump and some don't. Guess i depends on engine and year of the car. I think its from 1996 onwards they all had pump in tank for the 940. For the 740 i think the 1990-92 turbo models had pump in tank as well but not sure, and now the regina as well 😄 I tried to research it but it was just too random and with differences from country to country.

      @@BackmansGarage You might remember a forum post I did back in 2020 about Porsche backing the introduction of new carbon-neutral fuels for use in internal combustion engines (ICE), which appeared to be a lifeline in ensuring the survival of the classic car movement. According to a recent TorqueCafe report, the consortium behind this initiative - which includes not only Porsche and parent company VW but also the German government and major energy firms like ExxonMobil and Siemens Energy - has announced that a new facility will be built in Australia to produce these so-called eFuels. A location for the new plant is yet to be confirmed, but it most likely will be on the east coast with construction due to commence in 2024. It will be in addition to the recently completed Haru Oni plant in Chile which is scheduled to start production this year. Porsche plans to initially use the fuel produced at the Chile plant to power its Supercup competition and other motor sport activities before it gets the green light for sale to the general public. Porsche is also backing this venture to ensure that its iconic sports cars - the 911 and 718 - can continue to be powered by ICEs. F1’s proposed switch to this fuel could also be the catalyst for Porsche's return to Grand Prix racing. As mentioned in my first post, these 'eFuels' are created through a new process that combines hydrogen and carbon dioxide (CO2) captured from the atmosphere, resulting in a synthetic liquid fuel which is claimed to be carbon-neutral, as it only emits the same amount of CO2 that was used to make it. And that applies to both petrol and diesel engines. Porsche says a major advantage is the eFuel’s ease of introduction, as it could be used in all ICEs and make use of existing petrol station networks. Clearly, this eFuel could eventually replace petroleum and presents a practical alternative to battery electric power, not only in cars but also heavy road transport, shipping and commercial aviation. It could also mean that the doomsayers, predicting the inevitable death of the world’s vast classic car industry due to petroleum being banned, will be proven wrong. This is a promising development for classic car owners, particularly in Australia.

    • @BackmansGarage

      It's an interesting topic and subject for discussion. It would be nice to make a video about my take on the future of ICE but that would take me months of prep and editing. But I for one don't believe that 100% electrification is feasible at this time or in the coming 50 years unless something drastic happens surrounding the way we make and, most of all, distribute the electricity. But there is no doubt that the best way to power a car is by the electric motor, it always has been. Legislation and price are the two biggest concerns I have with it all. I find it hard to see a car like the Volvo 740/940 being financially feasible within 5-15 years on pump-gas, synthetic or not. But the ICE will live on, no doubt about that, we just won't be able to daily them as we are today. Just take the Horse for example, it used to be the "car" but now it's pretty much limited to its own events and tracks and not feasible for everyday use. I think the ICE will go the same way. Probably with restrictions on things like fuel. But hey, if we can make carbon-neutral fuel on an enormous scale to feed the entire fleet of cars, trucks, boats etc and have them run in engines that produce zero emissions and pollutants then sure, I don't see why that can't be a possible future. But I'm not educated enough to make a qualified guess on all this, there is a lot to dig into. @@ricksampson6780
