Critically Misused: Oozes
Welcome to Critically Misused, a show where we discuss misused or underused aspects of Dungeons and Dragons. This episode, we will be covering oozes, as recommended by @BlahBlah_Sunrest. I thought this would be impossible, but its a worthwhile discussion about creativity and creature design.

See I figure the neothelid is an uncontrolled feral version of its kind suffering from the Mind Flayer version of Mad Cow Disease. It could be properly channeled, and used to create Exalted Neothelids, which are even bigger more dangerous creatures than normal Neothelids that also have Mental Powers that surpass an elder brain, to the point they can send psychic messages to themselves at points earlier in their own timeline.

God I have so many plants in my setting. Like 12% of them are monsters the rest are just Botanical features of the setting. It's exceptionally common to find single flowers that grow to 60ft. tall, and support whole ecosystems. My only 2 monsters are Mandrakes, which are basically shriekers who have decided that they can't wait for reinforcements, and Wormwood, a species of venomous plant that serves as a very common, very agressive weed.

I find the emotionless aspect really dumb too. Fundamentally if they have no emotions, why would they do anything at all? Wouldn't that mean no ambition, no desire, no fulfillment? It just seems silly, even a robot needs a drive similar to an emotion or it will just stick to mundane tasks without ever thinking for itself, even if it is super-intelligent. I thought it was just a result of ophidophobia and misinformation about basic biology: of course the *snake* people are the ultimate evil; reptile brains have the same complexity as mammalian brains, they just tend to be smaller relative to body size. I did not make that connection in how it's related to stereotypes for autism, but now that I think about it autism stereotypes are fundamentally connected to stereotypes about reptiles: they're different in the way they interact with the world and express themselves, so they're assumed to be dumb and/or inferior and/or nefarious in some way. I view it as shallow thinking, as at least for snakes I'm convinced they are way smarter than they get credit for. I have my pet corn snake potty trained, I take her outside and she goes, and never inside. Didn't even require training, try getting a rat to be that cooperative XD

As for other Kobold tricks and traps.... I think slides could be fun too.... Have a slide lead down into a pit, with a rope that the Kobold can use to safely swing across to the other side, while the players chasing him tumble into the pit.... Or have the Kobolds put a spiked door at the bottom of the slide, that they can close and lock so anything else going down the slide hits the spikes on the door.... Or maybe the slide is their garbage chute and it leads to a pit with a Gelatinous cube at the bottom....

I had heard of Genius Locis multiple times before, but I had completely forgotten that they were oozes. Now I want to run a campaign where cultists of Juiblex attempts to turn entire planes into Genius Locis to give their lord complete control of the multiverse. Your videos really get my creativity going, and you bring really good ideas to the table (like the incredible cool ooze cloud)! Now that I think about it, the existence of Dragonblood Oozes imply that there could be other ooze hybrids. Genius Loci could be elemental-like oozes when seen from this angle, and Gibbering Mouthers could be aberrant oozes! Now I wonder what a celestial ooze could be like.

Plasmoids would be your best bet. Creatures native to Wildspace can be labeled as celestials even if they aren't good or from the upper planes (see Kindori and Starlight Apparition) since they are from the stars above; they are literally celestial. In their original setting (Krynnspace, the crystal sphere of Dragonlance) plasmoids lived on one of Krynn's three moons depending on their alignment; if I remember correctly, the red moon has the good aligned plasmoids while the black moon has the evil aligned ones. Imo, plasmoids could totally stand in for Celestial and Fiend oozes, if the Alkilith and yochol aren't enough.

Ever considered doing critters from the POV of other game systems? Vampires from Vampire the Masquerade are a whole different kettle of Vampire from 5e Vampires, whilst still retaining all the stuff that makes them recognisably vampires. Low Fantasy Gaming Vampires can be ported wholesale into 5e, as they both use the same core d20 system (and LFG has in turn just imported vampires from the 5e OGL). With the exception that they made Vampires dangerous as hell by incorporating all of their folkloric strengths: -Every natural attack roll of 19 they summon a thrall to their aid (infinite horde of thralls, fitting tyranny theme). -Generally high stats all around. -Can attempt to charm anyone staring at their eyes, with a 30% chance to recharge this ability every turn -Outright *immune to damage* from weapons that aren't cold-iron or magical in some way -Regenerates 1d12 HP every turn -Fire temporarily stops the regeneration for 1d6 rounds, tactically significant but if it escapes it's back to full HP rapidly -"Killing" the Vampire causes it to disperse into its mist form to reform in its coffin. Meaning the git can keep attacking the players again and again until it either gets caught in sunlight or the players fight their way to its coffin, likely hidden and guarded in its most well-defended castle. -Players bitten by the vampire temporarily lose a level until the end of the adventure. -Anyone reduced to 0 lvls by the vampire's bite can be brought back as a thrall, and any thrall can become a vampire if the original vampire chooses to not destroy the thrall. This can get very silly with the entire player party becoming vampires lmao Another easy way to use them is give them player levels on top of making them the head of a political dynasty. Personally I'm really fond of the Vampire Counts in Warhammer Fantasy, since they existed within a pseudo-Holy Roman Empire framework and attempted to retain their status even after becoming vampires. Although they weren't that successful in maintaining peaceful relations with their neighbours (who tried wiping them out in vampire wars), I can imagine a hilarious alternative world where all the great estates gather around to elect the new Emperor. A room full of nobles, knights, priests... And the token vampires.

Oozes are truly oozing with potential. My favourite take on oozes that is ripe for inspiration (or tabletop looting) was this little flash game from the 2000s called Amorphous+, which tasked you with the hapless job of dealing with amorphous blobs. Each were hostile blobs that could merge together to form more dangerous blobs, or reproduce through sporulation or splitting. As any darkest dungeon player will know, there is nothing worse than getting drowned in blobs replicating faster than you can kill them. Some of the cool blobs they came up with: -The clutter. A purple coward that fired its babies at you, gradually slowing you down. Each of these babies would rapidly grow into an adult clutter once you threw it off your body. Inherently harmless, the clutter could grind you to a halt in time for other blobs to kill you. -The boulder. A blob that surrounded itself in rock. Nigh unkillable unless you managed to crack its shell somehow (usually by getting it to collide with another boulder or get it within range of an explosion). -The inkie. Just a giant fast moving sac of ink hurtling at you like a demonic water balloon. Caused blindness if it hit you, or left a puddle of flammable/slippery oil if you killed it... Or violently exploded if ignited whilst whole. It'd be fairly easy to convert this to 5e by giving a flask of oil from the adventurer's equipment list a movement stat and a hatred for adventurers :P -The torch and the frostie. One is a fireball, the other is a frostball. Same deal, rolls towards you like a baneling and then explodes. This may not be in the spirit of "attacking with pseudopods" but life is really one big pseudopod if you're enthusiastic enough. -The biter. A little blue ball that manifested teeth and lunged at you when it got close. Absolutely horrifying. Functionally you might actually be better off facing an ooze that has teeth and tries to take a bite out of you vs one that engulfs you completely, but putting teeth on oozes is just... Nope. -The horror. When two biters merged together, they produced the horror. An ooze covered in so much teeth it acted as an omni-directional chainsaw that was immune to damage - except in the brief moment it fired off all of its spines in four tracking chainsaw discs, leaving its core vulnerable. The worst thing about it was the speed and sound of this living chainsaw relentlessly pursuing you. -The amalgam. An ooze that ate other oozes to get bigger. When it got big enough it split off more amalgams. This goes to show how giving standard oozes the ability to rapidly reproduce is like giving basic 5e zombies and skeletons the ability to raise more zombies and skeletons. Player panic results, even if they vastly overmatch their opponent's CR -The Gray. A metal, high-evolution blob that didn't so much as attack you with a pseudopod as it did punch a massive hole through your organs using a metallic lance-tipped pseudopod. -The Void. The Gray's big brother, which fired a disintegration ray and became a singularity, drawing everything into its mass and certain assimilation. The only way to kill it was to charge into the singularity's gravitational effect before the beam or the singularity core got you, in a very tense showdown. Not sure how you could translate that into 5e mechanics but with other game systems you could have fun with an ultimate glass cannon boss for your players

Myself I love to use the idea of monster hunting for both the idea of using them to creating alot of interesting items, and weapons, but also as side quest options on nights a group wants to slow the story progression. I would than link the idea of hunting monsters to adventuring/hunting guilds that the players can join or just inquire at to get missions from these places. Like going to a guild that lets them know they have missions for hunting the areas around the city that could be orders the guild has from maybe other business for things they need (materials, or such), or a bounty for highly dangerous monsters or people that the city or officials needs dealt with. If you add in that only larger towns an cities have actual guild halls for the players to inquire at, or bring the completed bounty to, while smaller towns an villages have either a smaller training hall or building that the guild keeps less experienced members at it could work well. It even make sense in a setting stand point as if you are in a world like the fantasy ones people able to deal with the monsters, and issues would rally together an the officials of the government would want to keep these people tracked.

Apparently, Barghests have changed in 5e. In older editions, Barghests did not attack goblins but worked with them, becoming tribal leaders because they are far more powerful than normal goblins, and one of their abilities is (was?) to shape change to just about resemble a goblin. The idea was that Barghests started off weak, but for every level of creature they devoured, they became more powerful. When they hit their maximum power, they returned to Gehenna to establish territory. From what you related, I assume that this is no longer the case.
