- Welcome to Critically Misused, where we discuss potentially misused aspects of Dungeons and Dragons fifth edition. This episode, we will be covering brain-eating mind flayers as requested by many people after my World Enders video.
Running a Mind Flayer Raid: • How to Run a Mind Flay...
Clockwork Horrors: • Critically Misused: Wo...
One of my favourite bits of mindflayer lore is the neothelid. Just as an axolotl might escape its neotenous form and become a land-dwelling salamander, an illithid tadpole can become a neothelid, a cunning large psychic worm that reminds me delightfully of the mind worms from Alpha Centauri. I personally always ran the mindflayer hatred and taboo of neothelids as a deep sense of embarassment and wounded pride, that the neothelids were living proof of just how uncomfortably close the intellectually powerful race was to being a mere hungry hungry worm.
I really like this! Seems to fit thematically!
I’ve always found the lore of Mind Flayers hard to keep track of, which makes sense considering how much there is to know about them, but you really put it in a simple and concise way. Great job once again!
Thank you!
In my setting I had an elder brain push its luck during the dragon gaint war causing the dragons to be willing to tolerate each other to destroy their kind. There are very few mindflayers around now but there’s one in this secret organization who has the job of basically erasing memories and planting agents via intellect devourer
It's just interesting the reintegration of Lovecraft's cosmic terror into the generic but epically mystical universe of Dungeons and Dragons! Personally, apart from being an allusion to Cthulhu, they also remind me of the great race of Yith but with more gastronomic approaches! Intriguing clarification of the subtle secret invasion and temporary legislation!
Ok... this is a channel I’ve needed👍👍👍
I love the new channel icon!
Wow, your really starting to take off. Good job dude!
One minor quality nitpick is this video seemed a bit quiet, if you booted the volume it would be a little easier to hear you. Other than that this was a grwat video. Im looking forward to the next one!
Liking the new channel art.
Me too
Do you think a good alligned mind flayer/elder brain could exist? If yes, how would it behave?
That would be a major anomaly. Mind flayers have to consume brains, its part of their diet. As a result, they hold humans and other races as lesser life, the way we see cattle. A good aligned Mind Flayer would have to have one hell of a morale shift, and find some vegan diet alternatives
@@thegayerest does eating brains make mind flayers evil though? I don't think veganism is a requirement for being a good aligned human, why would it be for mind flayers? If they need brains to survive, how is that different from a lion hunting an antilope?
@@thegayerest Beyond Brain?
Fair point, but I have a counter-argument: If they're justified in eating me, I'm justified in killing them.
@@thegayerest do they actually need to eat the brains of living beings or could they live off synthetic neural tissue grown in a lab?
Could you spell out the other dangerous creature besides mind flayers and clockwork horrors? I have never heard of them and have hard time actually finding them on the internet :D

@@thegayerest thx!
gith-YANG-kee
Dang, you're right
@@thegayerest All good, just trying to help, back when I played adnd they were +5 vorpal sword wielding astral plane dwelling badasses, one of my favorite races.
They are really great. I wanted to do a video about them exclusively, but realized I would have to cover this first
