  • Welcome to Critically Misused, where we discuss potentially misused aspects of Dungeons and Dragons fifth edition. This episode, we will be covering the maddeningly powerful kuo-toa, as recommended by @alkemyst337.

I love these kind of races in fantasy. The orcs from Warhammer probably the most familiar for people but the guild wars franchise has a similar race known as the grawl. Lots of people would abuse them into channeling their energy into false gods, the most prominent were the twin elder dragons of ice and fire

Warhammer and D&D took the same principle in two entirely different directions: comedy and horror. Speaks to how versatile these races can be

Kuo-Toa are the best. I've always wanted to run a Kuo-Toa tribe that worship a cannon and a lighthouse as their gods

Currently running a dungeon/temple that has been deserted and taken over by Kuo-toa. I have a room of broken statues that the players can interact with, the room has a jar of Sovereign Glue with enough to construct 3 statues from a list of various broken parts. My players stopped right outside the room last session as we had run a bit long. Very excited to see what strange gods they may accidentally create for the Kuo-toa that survive in their wake.

Update: They made a God out of the statue parts that was a Kenku's face, with a skeletal right arm, an ettercaps left arm. They used the body of a robed hooded figure for the torso that is nude from the waist down but is gold(also from the waist down. It has a fig leaf covering it's crotch (for modesty), and a long Froghemoth-like toung protruding from its beak. They named it Jahova, and a nearby Kuo-toa Archpriest began praying to it.
Tldr: They made a faction of the Kuo-toa Jahova's Witnesses. Also he is the Kuo-toa God of all things sticky and slimey
      I love my players.

Really The Kuo-Toa and other marginalized species / races deserve a greater appreciation of narrative background, intriguing their potential for fans who literally create their own deities, reminds me a lot of those surreal movements of the 20th century only more grotesque. Personally, it bothers me that they validate them in the stereotype of simplified vagueness or an extremism of semi-neutralized violence and which is worth trying to explore it better. To see beyond just the mere archetype and to understand that feeling that link of creative personalization

Excellent video man! This is perfect timing, I actually plan on using these guys soon. They'll be worshiping the long deceased remains of a jester, who in life gave them something they've never experienced, entertainment, comedy and all around relief. From this a mad festival god is born, creating an eternal carnival to entertain his new followers that the party will have to perform/survive in, all the acts a bit twisted and skewed since the Kuo-Toa only really knew of such performances from stories alone, their madness filling in the blanks. Always loved the potential they have and can't wait to use them!

Ah yes, my favorite mind flayer victims: the fish DMs.
