Give Up Control??? Embrace Uncertainty to Overcome Your Chronic Pain & Symptoms
Unlock the secrets to navigating uncertainty in your healing journey with insights from the MindBodyCouple podcast. Ever wondered how your nervous system's subconscious signals might be impacting your emotional regulation and perception of safety? Join us as we explore the concept of neuroception from polyvagal theory, revealing how childhood adversity, trauma, and chronic pain can skew these signals, leaving you feeling more vulnerable. You'll learn practical strategies to enhance emotional regulation and reduce the fear of uncertainty, empowering you to transform your response to life's unknowns.
Embrace a new way of living by letting go of the excessive control that binds you. Our episode guides you through recognizing whether your actions are fear-driven or genuinely rooted in self-care. Tanner and Anne introduce a mindful practice that shifts your focus from pain and symptoms to engaging in valued activities, helping you identify how uncertainty manifests in your body. With a compassionate approach, they explain the importance of staying within a "healing window" to avoid overwhelming sensations. By practicing presence and observation, you'll cultivate a greater tolerance for uncertainty, enabling you to live more fully and freely.

I really like this podcast... Keep doing it;) As far as control goes I would say that I am on the other side of the spectrum.. People, places, and things control me but I would say that sitting with the uncertainty works for that as well.. My Alanon Sponsor and my Alanon Sponsor before were working on my to take more control (responsibility) for my life..

I love the stream/river of emotions, and stepping back and observing thoughts, fears, and a whole whack of emotions from a curious perspective. I've started putting things into different shaped boats. Round boats for people related emotions. Square boats for just general negative thoughts, fears and such. And triangular boats for things that I need to get done - projects/to do's and stressers like that. That has been helpful for me to compartmentalize where issues are. I'm listening to this every night now. Thanks again Tanner. Great practise to adopt.

When being triggered/feeling anxious because of sensations/stored emotions, in order to feel and process them, is it better to first down regulate the nervous system before diving into it? I've tried to process an emotion when I was triggered and the intensity became worse.😮 Another time after doing a little bit of yoga (after I was just lightly triggered), I was able to process difficult sensations. So is it first better to do a regulation technique/safety signal, before processing the things that occur? I just want to make sure that I got it right, I don't want to experiment around and make things worse lol🤔

This is very interesting how you emphasize feelings of safety. Lack of safety is what activates pain messages in the neural pathways during episodes of chronic pain. So lack of safety can create activate messages in the neural pathways that create feelings of fatigue too?

Hello, first of all I did a lot of emotional somatic tracking to teach my brain that my emotions are not dangerous. Take guilt, for instance. Once I feel guilt, I teach my brain through somatic tracking that it isn’t dangerous. That’s the first step. That can take you a long way. Then, I ask myself: Why do I feel guilty everytime I have to say: No to someone. That part takes longer. I find that working with a therapist helps.

At :25:00 you referenced cutting people out of your life to improve your sense of safety. This should not be under-estimated. Much of my fight-or-flight experiences, had their roots in being an empath/people pleaser and... that made me a natural magnet for narcissists - being exploited, manipulated, discarded etc. until there was nothing left but an unrecognizable shell of myself. Sometimes, narcissists exist among your friends, co-workers/bosses and immediate family. We live in a culture that sadly seems to encourage -if not reward - narcissistic behaviour. Tough choices have to be made if you want to heal.
