Depth of field exercises with Fuji XF 35 mm F/1.4 R
I call this video "depth of field exrecises" on a Christmas tree. Please sit back, listen to some Christmas music and relax. I used equipment listed below to take the photos and film the Christmas tree decorations. My film simulation was Classic Chrome (with about 5000K white balance). The video is 25fps and shutter speed 50 to avoid flicker of the LED lights.

Checkerboard technique - looking, watching, seeing and visualizing in photography

In order to be a good photographer one needs to be able to see and observe, not only watch. In this video I talk about the essence of being able to notice things for photography. I talk about a technique I call "checkerboard vision". According to this you mentally divide your field of view into small sections or rectangles so that each rectangle contains something of interest - object, color, m...

I started to sell my Nikon AF 50mm F/1.8 D only to realize what a mistake it would’ve been. The lens actually has superpowers and its superpowers are hidden in its simplicity. Yes, you are right. It is wobbly because it comes from Valdai factory. In one week's time my Krasnogorsk-made 44m-4 will arrive and I will check how solid it is.
Hi! Thank you. I'll be very interested to hear how good your copy is. Kind regards!
@@tom_photo I sure will get back to you.
@@tubebreguet Thanks!
I recently got the XT20 for Christmas today! I love using it with the 18-55mm lens, but I'd love to know what lens you're using? It looks very compact.
Hi! Thank you for asking. The lens you're seeing in the video is Fuji XF 35mm F/1.4 R (ua-cam.com/video/TsyVkPuo5mM/v-deo.html). It happens to be my favorite Fuji lens so I prefer to us it whenever I can. The kit lens you are you're also very nice. Kind regards!
AT 1:33, you mention that VR iwas turned off with both lenes. I did not fine a way to turn off the VR on the AF-P & d3400
Hi Gert! Thank you for asking. With this lens you need to turn off VR via camera menu. Kind regards!
I'm thinking of getting the 50mm F/1.8 D as its one of the cheaper lenses I could get for my D5300. It has the hard stops & distance scale for focus and the manual aperture ring which I would like to have as the AF-P 18-55mm F/3.5-5.6 the D5300 came with lacks both. The infinitely spinning electronic focus ring of the AF-P lens in particular bothers me and wastes my time when trying to photograph things in darker areas around sunset or astrophotography. I won't know if stuff is in focus until I do a test shot and the electronic ring is so touchy making it easy to go past my intended focus point with just a little movement of the ring. Another plus with the 50mm F/1.8 D would be that I'll be able to use the passive lens extensions that were given to me with the D5300 with no issues when it comes to focus or aperture control. The wider aperture would be a nice benefit too since F/3.5 tends to be a bit dark for my liking necessitating a higher ISO and/or longer shutter speed to compensate.
Hi! Thank you for making these very valid points. They serve as good guideline for someone considering buying this lens. Kind regards!
The depth of field changing is amazing! Thank you for the video. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!🎄🎆

Hi! Thank you so much. Great decision to buy one. Kind regards!
Thank you! Check out the interview that Barbaralee Diamondstein did with photographer Gary Winnogrand. He had strong views about photo meaning and his motivation for taking pictures. It’s called: Visions and Images Gary Winnogrand 1981.
Hi! Great suggestion, I'll check it out. Cheers!
All true - painting and drawing are very direct art forms. For example you could put paint on canvas with your fingers. I think the directness of painting is the reason “fine art”paintings sell for much higher prices than photographs. Photography involves the use of equipment. The equipment stands between the artist and the image. With painting, not much stands between the artists and his or her output. I’m a photographer but have no illusions about photography being seen as high art (expensive) like painting, drawing and sculpture.
Hi! Photography is certainly an art form, equal to painting. However, some people think that it's the camera, not the photographer, that does most of the magic. Photos tend to sell for less than paintings because you are not limited to how many copies you can make. Ansel Adams was an exception because he put original art into each of his print and that could not be reproduced. But in digital era things are different. Thank you very much for taking the time to share your thoughts!
Great tips! A small, lightweight, simple to operate camera with a pop-flash is my personal favorite for travel or most all casual situations. Most any contemporary cameras will take good pictures. Go to a physical store and find something that is comfortable in hand and fits your personality and interests. Think about how the camera feels around your neck. A camera that isn’t physically comfortable to carry and operate is a no-go. Find something inexpensive. If you drop it in the sea or on the floor you won’t be so bummed out. A cheap camera will take great pictures and leave you with money for other things.
Hi! Yes, exactly. The camera is overemphasized in photography. It's the person behind it who decides what to do and how. The best camera in the world is always the one you have in your hand (and not the one that was left at home because it was too big). I've been enjoying reading your comments. Thank you!
Right on! I’ve taken some great pictures with 90 year old Kodak Brownie cameras. Unless a lens is damaged or full of debris or fungus they all can have a look that might be interesting. I really don’t want clinical sharpness - I want an interesting picture.
Hi! Great to hear that you think the same way as me. Cheers!
This reminds me of variations in sound signatures when comparing copies of the same turntable phono cartridges. Two of the same brand and model can sound different for whatever reason. There are a lot of variables when manufacturing any physical device.
Hi! Indeed. I was quite surprised to see how different the three copies turned out to be. Thanks a lot for watching!
It’s my favorite Nikon lens for most situations. I’ve used these lenses for years and years. Lightweight, not so expensive that I worry about damaging it, great color rendering and beautiful images with a Nikon film camera.
Hi! Yes, and what's most surprising is that you really don't expect this high photo quality based on the looks. This lens is better than many people suspect. Best of luck to you with your photography!
I use Nikon D850 and Fujifilm XH2. I like them both. The Fujifilm is fun with film simulations built into the camera. The Nikon is a beast when used in manual modes. I love them both.
Hi! I agree with you. I also like both Fuji and Nikon, and for different reasons. Thank you very much for your feedback!
Nice shots - thank you for posting this. A beautiful place!
Hi! Thank you so much, indeed. Kind regards!
Hey i have this on my D5200. But there is no motor for autofocus for this lens on my camera body. Is there any adapter that i can get to use this lens with autofocus capability on the d5200?

@ Sorry about my bad english. I meant to say I have the same lens on a d5200. 😃
Thank you for clarifying this. Indeed, unfortunately an adapter cannot help with the autofocus here.

@@georgelsla7421 You're very welcome!

The Nikon 50mm f/1.8 D lens is quite satisfying optically. But ... But it has very SLOW old fashioned auto-focusing, using that old focus clutch mechanism technology.
Hi! Yes, it's true. If you want a very fast acting lens then other options can be faster (including the AF-S 50mm F1.8 G). Thank you for your feedback!
One standout feature of this lens, often overlooked, is its ability to produce stunning sunstars, thanks to its less rounded aperture blades. While this compromises the bokeh, you can always use software to achieve that effect. As you mentioned, it’s a great lens to keep, as selling it wouldn’t be worth the return. Thank you!
Hi! Thank you for making this excellent point. I have already produced a video (scheduled to come out in January) where I talk about this very point and also show examples of sunstars (compared to those of Helios 44-2). Kind regards!
Wow, I learned another new photography principle. I'll have to apply this method to use soon because I started to get bored and mind blocked often now. Thank you.
Hi! I'm glad you found it useful. Thanks so much for watching!
Great tip. That's a natural development of a vision skill for those who does not have much to photo around, like boring town, muddy winter, messy\busy woodland. Sometimes I take on a walk with me just a 75mm lens and a macro setup as I know I'll use only tight angles. What stands in the way becomes the way 🙂
Hi! Thank you so much for your feedback. This is very true. Macro is often the best way when nothing much seems to be going on. Kind regards!
Wow! What a terrific travelogue! And not one single spoken word! You let each 1000-word image speak for itself, and did they ever speak!
Hi! Thank you so much, indeed. Kind regards!
I got a 44m-4 and it's very solid. Maybe someone has been tinkering with yours?
Hi! Thanks for your response. Indeed, the looseness of the rings depends on usage, whether or not it has been cleaned; and there is also a fair amount of variability between the units. Kind regards!
Yours could have been manufactured by a different company. Check the logo if it is different than the one on the front-facing ring in the video.
@@tubebreguet Hi! Yes, indeed. Thank you very much!
hi, i know this an old review but i have the d version with my d750. do you think i will gain anything in terms of sharpness, colour rendation, contrast etc if i switch it to 50mm 1.8g version or 35mm 1.8 g version. thanks in advance
Hi! Thank you for asking. The 50mm F/1-8 G is a tiny bit sharper but having used it in parallel with the 50 mm F/1.8 D, I'd say that the differences are very theoretical. I do not notice sharpness differences in real life. I'd say that you will not gain much of anything by switching. Kind regards!
@@tom_photo thanks a lot! i wanted to keep my 50mm 1.8 D as it was a gift from my father...now I'll keep it forever! you are a rock!

Hi! Thank you very much, indeed. Kind regards!
Hi Tom. I am planning on buying either a nikon d3200 or d3300 which do you think I shoud buy?
Hi! Thank you for asking. For me there was a jump in capabilities going from Nikon D3200 to Nikon D3300 (ua-cam.com/video/BYSCfy18tJI/v-deo.html). Most notably the D3300 does not have a low pass filter anymore. This means that the D3300 photos are sharper. After the D3300 the cameras in this series (D3400, D3500) actually started losing capabilities (ua-cam.com/video/51MuV6YqanA/v-deo.html). So, I'd recommend D3300 to you with full confidence. Kind regards!
This was my favourite lens when I shot Nikon DSLR's, but, I did sell it with all my gear when I moved to Fuji :( They are super cheap though so could easily buy it again. Though the manual focusing experience is not ideal, so I'd probably pick up the AIS variant instead to use on Fuji.
Hi! I agree that manual focusing is not always the easiest. I use this lens primarily with Fuji these days. Kind regards!
The first real camera I bought with my own money was a Praktica MTL5. Had a CLA done and then ruined multiple films before I figured it out. It's a wonderful camera
Hi! Nice camera. Thank you for your feedback. Just like you, I also went through quite a few films before I got it to work. Kind regards!
Can the script be made into a Windows executable so I don't have to do as much typing? I would be willing to copy the exe into the directory with the photos if needed.
Hi! Thanks for asking. Yes, you can certainly do that. I don't use Windows myself but I can give you simple directions how to make that exe file. 1) Install Pyinstaller via the terminal like this: pip install pyinstaller 2) navigate to where your Python script is, 3) generate exe file: pyinstaller --onefile your_script.py. I hope this helped; let me know. If you cannot get it to work I could try to tweak my Linux a bit to compile for Windows. Cheers!

Hi! Thank you very much for your feedback. Kind regards!
It makes for great photos, it just feels like a cheap piece of plastic. Keep it on on autofocus camera and lock the aperture ring, then you wont have to feel how crappy it is. 😅
Hi! Thanks for this humorous advice. Cheers!
i have a fujifilm xt100 i need a 400m-500mm lens for planespotting but i cant find any budget lens like the xc50 and 230mm is not enough zoom for me do you have any reccomendation?
Hi! If you need longer than 230 mm then it gets tricky. It certainly is not going to be a budget lens. The longest native lens for Fuji X-mount is 150-600mm. That is very expensive. You may want to look into using tele converters. This is a way to extend your lens for cheap. You can also consider non-native lenses that can be attached via an adapter. One affordable example is Tamron SP 500mm f/8. Kind regards!
Great video... got one too that I still ude with my D50, D300 & D810!
Hi! Thanks for your feedback. Great to hear from you!
I bought this lens after getting the D300 in 2007. I still have both. What I don’t like about this lens is the bokeh. It has, for the lack of a better term, some sort of an astigmatism. Specular highlights from backgrounds are ok, but highlights with strong linear gradients, not so much. If you’re careful with the backgrounds, you’ll get good bokeh, and the lens is sharp enough. It’s a real thrifty fifty. With the Nikon Zf, it’s all manual with this lens. But even though with an aperture ring, can’t use it. You still have to lock it on f/22, and manually set aperture through the dial.
Hi! Thank you very much for this analysis. Kind regards!
Hello Tomphoto, great video. How do i use the manual focus on this lens? I’m using the Nikon D90 but got the lens from a D80.
Hi! Thanks for asking. You will want to use A-priority or manual (M) mode. M mode is the best. Then select "Non-CPU Lens Data" and select focal length and max aperture. The under "Custom settings" go to aperture settings and set it to aperture ring. (I may not be absolutely correct with every menu item here because I don't own a D90 but I hope you can figure it out by analogy.) Set the focus mode to manual and use the aperture ring to change the F-stop. Let me know if you need more help. Kind regards!
Nice video. I like using manual lenses for infrared photography and astrophotography - hard stops at infinity for the latter. Cheers!
