S4.40 Roofing, Painting, Scraping and More
The roofers are on a roll and having the big lift on site is allowing us to get so much work done. Things have been going nonstop since the beginning of the year and there's no sign of it letting up anytime soon. Will the heat finally be the thing that stops our progress?
This once abandoned Victorian mansion is undergoing a massive restoration. Designed by noted architect Nicholas Clayton, this Galveston historical treasure is slowly back to life. Restoration of this historic house is not easy, and the extensive yard and gardens add to the complexity and expense. Preservation of the original features is high on the priority list. Follow the journey from start to finish. It’s a tough, hot, sweaty, and very expensive road but worth every minute of it.
The League-Kempner House is a 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to saving this magnificent house.
The house needs your help to survive. You can donate on our website: www.leaguekempnerhouse.org/

Hello! Always enjoy your posts and progress. I am a little off subject commenting, but you may find it helpful. My neighbor introduced me to GrassOut weed killer by Agrisel. It only kills grass and grass type weeds. You can spray it in a bed of other plants (for me, mostly wedelia or Mexican petunias) and it doesn't harm it at all, but kills the grass. It is pet friendly too. It isn't fast though. It works great but may take a week or two before the grass actually dies. Still easier than weeding!! I use it a lot now. I mention it for situations like at 4:45 I also purchased a small bottle of Surfacant (Liquid Harvest) to go with it. Helps it cling to the grass long enough to work. Put both in a garden sprayer. Easy. Anyway, I ended up writing a novel. Sorry. LOL

I noticed on the preliminary plan the ceder fish scale was all the way down to the base of the second floor. Was the house built with it and converted in the big remodel in the 20’s. If so, would you restore? Have a mix of original and the 1920’s remodel?

I really like Kelly and Jean, working with people is the best. I think calling them "helpers" is better because we all feel good after volunteering, especially on such a project. I remember driving down Broadway 60 years ago and feeling the awe of such homes, and a certain respect. I could be there the 7th, 14th, and 21st . . . I'd be honored to help. What is a synonym for stealthily? Some common synonyms of stealthy are clandestine, covert, furtive, secret, surreptitious, and underhanded. While all these words mean "done without attracting observation," stealthy suggests taking pains to avoid being seen or heard especially in some misdoing. the stealthy step of a burglar. I am far from stealthy!

I've enjoyed watching your videos. You could be a firefighter. In fact, I would feel safer on a firetruck lift; that small driver looks scary. I didn't even do anything close to that when I was in the Army. I use a Teatree and Mint scalp oil when I go out in my yard. It keeps spiders and stealthy bats a out of my hair !!! Isn't the first rule of drafting dividing the space equally? I can't understand why those wooden pieces were installed that way, it makes no sense but only you notice it, I think. The town is so cute, thanks for preserving the house, and all your phenomenal videos. Another great one.

Fresh paint reminds you what these houses use to resemble. Not “rustic-chic” - or Addams Family Values. They were like huge wedding cakes; delicious pastries that enticed you to the fun and frivolity awaiting you long before you crossed the elaborate threshold. The fascia alone does wonders for showcasing the beautiful symmetry of this place. The little you’ve done makes a huge difference. Yes. I believe this particular masterpiece of architecture will re-resemble a giant chocolate fudge cake when you’re done with the exterior (if only I can find a gluten-free, egg-free slice, I’ll be back in business). I commend you for facing the elaborate complications of this enormous house with varying to little degrees of help and no money. It really has inspired me to take on tasks I never saw myself able to do - like metalwork! Can. Not. Wait to see the freshly painted roof window. Eh. All with a due many complications, of course.

Heather just cleaned out her painting stash and we got some great stuff to use, too. It's a little more complicated than it seems. The entire front and side yards need to be graded so that water flows to the side street. The property is right at an acre. We have done the back East quarter where the water problem was the worst. The South East side will be next since that water pools by the foundation. The front will be last since it is not affecting the house. The front will most likely get done when a new driveway gets installed. It would be nice if we had the money to do it all at once but since we don't, all the work has to get prioritized.

*GASPPP*** Concrete? Instead of harringbone BRICK!? That’s it. Unsubscribe!! I hope that joke finds you loling and not frothing…. I’ll do with eye-rolling. *nervous SoCal bro smile** “Worried about it getting splattered on me. Like that’s a problem” inspires more t-shirt ideas. “Workplace Injury? More like historic story worthy” and “Lead Paint Is the Bright Spot to My Day” - because it was used for its bright vibrancy. Also. Concrete ASMR. It. Will. Elevate things. It’s amazing what such small victories do for the betterment of things. Just this one short concrete trail is going to maximize mobility. It’s too bad the porch is such a HUGE and multi-faceted job to elicit the same satisfying impact. In the meantime…I guess you can call it quirky. Yeah……there’s another t-shirt idea. “It’s not cracked, it’s a postmodern design choice” or something along those lines.

Herringbone brick is my dream sidewalk. Brick plays such an important part in the structure of this house and when we are done, you won't be able to see any of it. I think a brick sidewalk would be a nice nod to the construction. Small victories keep us motivated. And when taken together, they have transformed this house. Keep you t-shirt slogans coming. You never know when one might show up in our online store.

5ft is too small for that big house the proportion is off. You should have just done it right 1 time instead of doing something smaller and then going back later and paying someone to do brick work. You should have just put it back like it was and bent a form to fix the curve.

We know it is out of scale, but you can't spend money you don't have. We would have preferred to do the entire sidewalk in brick so we are happy to add the brick accent later when we can afford it. Having a long-term plan and doing the work in manageable stages has worked well for us. Right now, we needed a safe sidewalk.

You are so welcome! This exterior of this house has changed so much. We still have a few more things to get done.

Ok so you said this sidewalk video is more current than the one you are showing now about the roof etc. I think that it might be more enjoyable to see more August 2024 work progress now.

Thanks for taking the time to watch our videos and comment. It really helps us getting the word out about the house. We try to keep the videos of the work in chronological order as a way of documenting the restoration. We don't want to skip over any of the work and have gaps in that documentation. We usually only post once a week and there has just been too much work going on to fit everything in. We are trying to add some extra mid-week videos to get caught up. This was a stand-alone project, so it made sense to go ahead and get it out there. The hot weather did slow the work down a bit so maybe we can get caught up soon.

It will be even better when we get it cleaned up and the brick installed. Hopefully the weather will be a little cooler and we can get that done soon.

How BEAUTIFUL the property must have been..... Just looking at it unfinished and I can see all the elegance of the era. Even without today's conviences one must be in awe of beauty!

It is a really beautiful house, and the yard just adds to the grandeur. All the little improvements are starting to add up. The curb appeal has changed dramatically.
