    Nice work getting that area cleared out. There is so much more room. The youth group was so cute.🙂 Prayers to everyone to stay safe through the storm. I'll keep an eye out for a midweek update.🙏❤️🤍💙

      It makes a nice little work space. It's much brighter than the basement. The youth group was so much fun. It was good to have so much energy in the house.

      It's not going to be pretty but at least it's a small one this time. Having been flooded during Harvey, I know this will be devastating for many and my heart goes out to them.

    Here’s an idea to help with the inside of the bottom kitchen unit cabinet. Use cheap peel and stick tiles to cover the bottom. I’m doing that to all my utility room cabinets right now and it makes a nice easy to clean durable surface. The price is right too. 😀

    Sweet potato vines would be great for the date palm stump planter, because it loves to grow in mulch.

    I’m sorry the hurricane is complicating things. But what state the house would be in if you didn’t save it. It really does appear like it was just in time. Especially with the water damage it was already having before you arrived! That parlor is a prime example of the fruit of your labors. It’s so bright and cheery and two old friends can enjoy it, too when coming to tour the place. A beautiful illustration showcasing how far the home has come. All that woodwork YOU have to repair and restore (which is all so beautiful, by the way) really encourages the woodwork I have to repair and restore in the furniture pieces from all different time periods I’ve been privileged to curate over.
    For 40 minutes, this video went by really fast.

    Prayers for all to avoid any damage from Hurricane Beryl. I’d actually been planning a day trip to Galveston next Saturday and had hoped to visit League Kempner for a tour if all is well and if you’re open. I live in Katy and know how crazy the weather can be and how things can turn on a dime. I’m hoping Beryl decides to turn on a dime in a good way that doesn’t affect any of us negatively.
    It’s fun to see how far you’ve come on the house. I renovated a house in Bellville for 17 years and completely took apart, stripped to the bare wood, repaired, sanded, and painted with primer, and two coats of Ben Moore paint on 22 double hung wood sash windows. I found replacement sash ropes and rehung all the windows to where the top went down and the bottom went up on all of them to where they were all completely functional. I took each one out and did all the little trim pieces too in the same way. It was a true labor of love.
    Great idea to set up a work station. The cleaning and organizing of work areas and materials is really a huge part of the whole renovation process that makes things go so much easier. If I ever retire I’m going to put in my application to volunteer at League Kempner. I’m dying to get my hands on your wood sash windows and get busy!

      Beryl is really on us at the moment. I don't think Katy is getting spared, my cousin just lost her fence. I hope you are safe where you are. Your experience with your windows sound incredible. We have so many that could use some TLC. You don't have to wait for retirement to come spend a Saturday as a volunteer. I'd recommend waiting for cooler weather.😀🙃 I have that new, organized space just waiting for someone to work in.

      @@leaguekempnerhouse I hope your newly repaired curved windows are holding up. They are a thing of beauty. We definitely got some wind here. No power at the moment but I was prepared and it’s not hot yet. Big branches down in the yard and a bit of lean on my new fence but it could have been worse. Crossing my fingers everything is ok at League Kempner. You’ve done so much work and it’s such a special place.

    Prayers for you and your neighbors going through constant vigilance with worrying about water going into the downstairs. At least you all are in the same boat, and can make it into a friendship. I was in the same situation here, but water never got into our house. We are not elevated, and our streets didn't flood. But I got PTSD from constantly having to clean out Crepe Myrtle debris circling the drain in my Atrium. My back patio used to have a problem until I installed 80 ft of slotted pipe. I had to go out there in the rain and clean out the drain.

      The eye of the storm moved right over our neighborhood at 9:11 a.m., at 12 mph it took one hour until winds shifted to coming from the south. So at 10:10 a.m. I went back inside. Today I helped my neighbor repair a fence and got stung by a yellow jacket. It felt like a taser. It hurt so bad. I tried to get in to Village Medical but could not so I went to the ER. I was having chest pains, and a high heart rate. The ER was so full of people the nurse announced she didn't think it was fair patients had no place to be seated. There was a line out the door, and people were standing. Well nobody got up. I left, went home and took a benadryl.

    Stay safe! Hurricane eye headed straight toward where I used to live in Port Lavaca, Calhoun County, Lavaca Bay. Matagorda County - Palacious - across the causeway - may hit there but what's a few miles - hopefully stays cat 1 or 2 but still the flooding is what is bad.

    • @leaguekempnerhouse
      @leaguekempnerhouse  2 місяці тому

      I wish I could be in Galveston right now to know what's going on in real time. It's not that bad here in Houston except for the massive power outages. The rain has been steady and seems to be draining well but there is still a flash flood warning. Things are already starting to let up some.

    • @groovy1937
      @groovy1937 2 місяці тому

      @@leaguekempnerhouse I hope the curved windows are safe! Matagorda was the landfall. Port Lavaca getting high wind and rain. Hopefully the impact isn't too bad and damage is low. Power outages are the worst - back to the 1800's in a flash - so much for electric car as they sit in flooded water and lithium batteries sizzle, boom, bang! Godspeed and good luck!

    Do any (or did) any of the windows have screens? I assume the big walk-through windows didn’t.
    2) was the any significance to the shutters being painted green? It seems that many of the homes from the LK era have green shutters, regardless of the exterior color of the home.

    • @leaguekempnerhouse
      @leaguekempnerhouse  2 місяці тому

      Many of the windows had screens. They are actually on the inside of the windows. I don't know about the green color. It could have just been popular or maybe that color was easy to make. We have a historic paint expert coming to look at the house. I will have to ask him that question.

    at 17:00. i've come across furry sections in early century finish boards while stripping also and most of the times i've somewhat concluded minor moisture damage way in the past. i've spent a few minutes trying to find the bottom of the furr bit and figure it out also lol. I'm pretty sure all my furry wood experiences have been on pine. That would be old growth virgin pine from pre or early century being in Lake Charles. Cedar and Furr's can do a furry thing for sure but i'm sure a softwood wouldnt have been used for furniture piece like that.

      It was some strange stuff. The primer seems to have "stuck" it down. Fortunately, it's in a place that doesn't show. The cabinet was probably made in the 1940s so the wood shouldn't be any of the new stuff.
