S4.31 Hurricane Beryl Update

- As hurricanes go, this was a minor one compared to what this old house has seen but was still very destructive and left millions of people without power. Janie and her husband rush to Galveston after an urgent call from one of our wonderful volunteers, Michael.
This once abandoned Victorian mansion is undergoing a massive restoration. Designed by noted architect Nicholas Clayton, this Galveston historical treasure is slowly back to life. Restoration of this historic house is not easy, and the extensive yard and gardens add to the complexity and expense. Preservation of the original features is high on the priority list. Follow the journey from start to finish. It’s a tough, hot, sweaty, and very expensive road but worth every minute of it.
The League-Kempner House is a 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to saving this magnificent house.

Thanks for the update and thanks to the volunteers! Your leadership & love got the house has inspired others.
We have the very best volunteers. Thanks for your kind words.
Thank you for giving us this update. I have been concerned about how this beautiful house fared after the hurricane. I thank the Lord no extensive damage was done by the hurricane. I do love this house, and I admire how you can come up with solutions to help save this marvelous home.
Thank you. We know just how lucky we were. This old girl's been through much worse and stood strong.
Thank you for getting an update out to us! Thought of you all and those curved windows all through the storm. Thrilled that all your hard work getting her dried in paid off. Tickled that the volunteers showed up to check on the house. Stay safe through the clean up!
I couldn't believe it when Michael called me. First, it was a miracle that the phone worked. It wasn't as big of a rain event but the winds were crazy and that blowing rain is usually what causes most of the leaks. It was great to see everything so dry inside.
Thanks for the video, glad those big curved windows were undamaged and the damages were mostly the temporary stuff that can be quickly put back.. No water in the basement! All the work has paid off! 😊👍
We were very lucky. It could have been much worse.
What a blessing that there wasn’t more damage. Happy that you are doing good too. Thanks for the update 😊
This old house has survived so much worse.
Im so relived the bay curved windows are OK. I hope everyone gets back to a normal life quickly, not having electricity is not good. thank you for the update 👍👍
We were relieved too. The heat is bad but we are used to it during the day. Sleeping in the heat without a fan is awful. We are lucky to have a place to stay. The line crews are working hard and over a million people have already had power restored. I think this is the largest outage event ever experienced in our area.
So glad y’all and the house is good for the most part! Thanks for sharing!
I'm glad you're all doing well. It's nice to see everyone checking on eachother and helping out. No water damage and the roofs looked good. Not to bad. Thanks for the update!!🤗❤️🤍💙
Saving this house has been a great experience and the best part is all the wonderful new friends made in the process.
Thank goodness you've got backup ..." the volunteers are converging " really made me emotional 😢... God bless them.. and glad you are all safe ... little Peppie always ready to help ❤ I think he needs his own little volunteers jacket !! Big hugs to you all.
How funny, when I was putting this together, I was thinking he needs his own LK House tee shirt. Our volunteers are the best. The friends I've made since starting this project are priceless.
So glad it wasn’t worse for you guys. Thanks for the update- been thinking of you!
We were very lucky. Thanks for thinking of us.
Up here in Indiana we just finished with the leftover rain and wind 😊 We needed the rain ❤
I wasn't too rainy as some hurricanes can be. I'm glad you got a little of it. Drought can be just as bad.
Thank the Lord the parlor windows came through without damage!!
Praying for those still without power and who suffered more damage.
The heat and humidity is really bad. I tried to pick up the yar today but gave up and went back just now so the sun wouldn't be an issue. I feel so bad for those who still don't have power.
Blessed that everyone is okay .
Thanks for the update! Glad you all are safe and sorry for the extra work.
In the grand scheme of things, the extra work is minimal. Getting power restored for those suffering in this heat is so important. We were without power for over two weeks after Ike and the temperatures were nowhere near this hot. My heart goes out to them.
@@leaguekempnerhouse so true. I pray all is restored quickly.
Glad that y’all OK 👍🏻
Naturally, though so many lives were at risk, and millions of folks' lives turned topsy-turvey, one of my big worries was how the League-Kempner House fared, especially the curved windows. Thank heavens most is intact Hope the electricity is soon fully restored in Texas.
We were worried too, but at the end of the day, it's just a material thing. The line crews are working hard and over a million homes have already had power restored. Unfortunately, it gets harder as they go because they work on the things that get the most people restored the quickest. At Jo's house there is a giant tree that fell across the line. It could take a while for it to get removed.
So glad you all are ok! 💗
We were very lucky.
So glad to know everyone's alright and only minor damage.
We were lucky in so many ways.
Glad y’all are OK.
Thanks. We have a place to stay and that's a blessing right now. Jo's family all have Covid so I've got them quarantined downstairs.
I didn’t realize until recently that large trees (some oaks) have such shallow root systems.
I think the oaks normally go fairly deep but those along Broadway are fairly new and haven't had time to establish well. We had a very long period of drought right after they were planted so I'm sure that didn't help. The palm trees roots hold up but they tend to snap off at the top.
I think the root watering system rotted their roots. It's so humid in Galveston you don't need to water. Watering them is what causes rust, fungus, and bugs need water. Also, it isn't necessary to use weed and feed on St. Augustine grass, it is detrimental to trees. Just mow less, and allow things to relax.
Thank goodness the League Kempner House survived, especially the curved windows!
No electricity here, and my huge Sequoia sized pine tree, not exaggerating, toppled onto my neighbors house destroying it, damaging mine.
Oh no. I hope no one was hurt. The wind gusts were crazy. North Houston and the Woodlands took it pretty hard with all the trees. I hope you get power soon. Do you have somewhere to go stay cool? How bad is the damage to your house?
@@leaguekempnerhouseThanks for the good wishes, yes, electric has returned, but the water well took a hit, as did the a/c system. House damaged by my trees but not as bad as the neighbors house, thankfully they weren't home, I don't want to think about the result if not!
If I can get the huge old pine tree culled for heart burled pine, it would be amazing wood.
I'll send email pics !
@@joejanczak3014 I hope your clean up is going okay. Things are almost back to normal here.
Oh. That water level on the coast was jarring to see. I’m from Southern California so I couldn’t help but think drastically when seeing that. It’s very encouraging to see you in such good spirits in the midst of the dangers and challenges and loss. I got so concerned about the alcove windows after seeing the other blown-out windows and front door. I wonder if their rounded shape protects them better since the wind rolls around them rather than straight at them like with square windows?
You know, the vast lawn looks incredible through it all, though. The fallen palm leaves are almost like an aesthetic vibe. Not so much when you have to clean and clear it all up. Ugh. But…you know, doesn’t..hurt the look! SO happy to see minimal water leakage. Wow. That’s a sign of coming a long way. And now, precautions can be taken care of to prevent problems in the next hurricane. Shows the quality of craftsmanship 100+ years go. The place isn’t up to par, and yet all that really devastated the place was a few blast-broken windows and door frame.
I'm almost always in good spirits. I guess it's my way of coping. My brain only looks forward. But, that vast lawn was not much fun to pick up. The bugs were terrible. Michael came back to do some more and got eaten alive, too. With covid I didn't get to finish and now the weeds are waist high in places. The rain made them happy
@@leaguekempnerhouse That is so grueling. And it looks like rain and even thunder is still on its way for a while in Texas. Going to be hot and humid, no doubt, when it clears up, but hopefully it will bring some peace in the restoration process and for life in general.
@@ManWhoLovesTheMary That rain and thunder really slows the restoration process.
Glad you guys are well. I just got my electricity restored on Monday the 15th .
Sorry you were near the end. Jo got hers on yesterday. I hope we don't have another one come this way soon.
Oh, wow!
It could have been worse. We were lucky this time.
I am SO thankful that everyone is okay and the damage was relatively minor. As far as securing the front doors goes- can you run a long bolt or screw through a 2x4, then a piece of plywood, then the holes where the door handles were, through another piece of plywood and into a final 2x4- basically sandwiching the doors from both sides in a self-securing manner? I’m sure if I sat here long enough, I’d think up an easy way to make that “easy open” but secure-able. For instance using eye-bolts to screw in and running a long-shanked padlock through the eyes so they can’t be easily unscrewed? Just mentally spitballing here.
Absolutely brilliant!!! I'm going to try that on Friday. That should be easy enough to undo and put back. I'm sure I have some carriage bolts laying around that will work.
Don't risk your life trimming trees. Getting on the roof to trim trees isn't wise. I like trees to grow naturally as much as anyone else. Trimming them too much can create a problem. I don't care for short grass even though it looks sweet. I lived this storm, it blew a ton of junk out of our trees, and the resultant natural environment was kind of cool. Due to the weather being so hot, and the heat, I mow on the highest level. We have crickets in the yard, now. I'm not into everything being so dang perfect. And, although there was debris in the street, it doesn't need to be so clean you can eat off of the street!!
This storm was really Mother Nature pruning everything for us. Longer grass in the summer helps keep the root systems cooler and does seem to help the grass survive better. Nature finds a way.
Thank goodness!! Jay kept asking me how you all did so we've been waiting. 🫶
We were very lucky. This was a little storm that really packed a punch. Lots of gust up closer to a Cat 2.
