Yeah, people used to game together (couch co-op), then consoles all went online and now the same thing is occurring again. Family members are becoming way too isolated from each other.

It’s really sad to see physical media becoming less mainstream over the years. While streaming can be convenient in certain instances, I will always prefer owning my favorite movies in physical formats because they’ll be mine forever.

@@Alien_isolationistthere are already some ps5 games where the physical copy is nothing more than a key to play the game, and you still have to download it, ruining the entire point of physical.
the excuse is the games are too big to fit on one disc, and games get bigger every generation, so when the ps6 arrives expect to see a lot more of this.

      @Jack_80 9 місяців тому

@@Alien_isolationist look it up, i'm sure you can find out. it's only like a couple of games so far. the disc is not ownership any more than a digital copy when it's just a key to let you download and play the game. it's the exact same thing as a digital copy, only you have to have the disc in the drive to play it.
i may not have proof this will become more common, but since they claim it's because the games are getting too big to fit on a disc, i'd be willing to bet anything that once the ps6 comes along we'll be seeing a lot more of this.

Companies that make physical media don't seem to realise that their action of reducing the amount of available physical media is contributing to the problem, because many people are simply giving up from looking and going straight to streaming services.
Your comments about the quality of streaming media reminded me of a science podcast I heard about younger generations who have grown up listening to MP3 files of music. Apparently one of the reasons why electronic noise makers (it really isn't music by proper definition) add so much bass to their sounds is to make up for the lack of audio range with compressed audio formats. Most people under twenty probably don't even know what high fidelity sound is, let alone actually having experienced it. (It also requires a hi-fi stereo, not one of the cheap audio players most people have these days.) -For those who aren't familiar with it, high fidelity music has an extremely broad audio range, including surround sound, so it sounds like you're in the middle of a live concert.
It's the same with movies at cinemas. I have high quality surround sound from my Blu-Ray player. It's so immersive that sci-fi movies sound real!

I've hated the move to digital for years & years now for the simple fact that you could at the drop of a hat not have access to a multitude of things you've legally purchased. It is also dependent upon you consistently shelling out more money that you have access to your library. No internet access, no library of content. Therefore 2 subscriptions are needed to access your movies/music etc., one to the content and one to your ISP. If you lose either the content is gone, or at least currently unavailable. Of course physical media can be damaged or lost, but I don't have to continually pay money to experience it. Both have their pros and cons, but I don't like having to be tied to a router to get my money's worth. Just my 2 cents.

One thing I may have missed if you mentioned is when you buy a physical copy of a movie the edit never changes. We’ve already seen it happening that streaming services are editing movies Splash on Disney+ for example adding CGI to cover Daryl Hannah’s bum. I’ve gone with the best of both worlds route and have set up a private media server and ripped my over one thousand movies on DVD and BR to it as well as my nearly 200 TV shows, almost 600 music albums, and 200 audiobooks. My I’m now getting ready to upgrade my RAID storage from 10TB to 20 since my collection is continuing to grow. If I’m at home I use the physical copy, and if I’m traveling or simply away from home I use my server. What these streaming companies are doing is pushing more people towards the less than legal means of watching.

I've been telling everyone this but I'll post it here as well: If the PS6 has no physical media, that'll be the end of my buying support for PlayStation products for the PS6 and beyond. I'm 34 years old now and if I'll be considered "old school" many years from now for holding onto my physical media for older consoles, so be it. At least I'll have the ability to admit that I'm not tied to any subscription gaming services that offer ZERO ownership for games and possibly only have playable games for that modern era and not classic games like the ones I'll still own on disc.

I, for one, still buy CD's and you've got the wrong end of the stick on CD's vs vinyl. Vinyl outsells CD's in terms of revenue but in the UK (and I suspect everywhere else) in units sold, CD's win two to one. I've even heard that younger people have started switching to CD's in some cases because they just can't afford the vinyl version. So far as CD's decline as a medium, there seems to be some indication that their slide has stabilised. The industry is fully behind this situation, mind you, because the margins are better and they make more money selling vinyl.

I don't like the idea that some company is controlling what movies are available to watch at any given time. I buy dvd movies that I enjoy watching more than once - often noticing little details I may have missed the first time. I like watching my own match up of double features (for example, Gene Hackman in The Conversation and Enemy of the State). I like the extras that come on many dvds such as the director narrating facts about the film, insight from cinematographers, actors, inclusion of deleted scenes, and sometimes alternate endings to the movies. I've been trying out Freevee but if I see something I really like but it is not available on region 1 dvd I get very, very frustrated (example - Bosch and Bosch: Legacy).

and now some newer games aren't even on the disc, the disc is merely a key and you have to download the game anyhow. since the excuse is the game is too big to fit on a disc, this will become far more common as games continue to take more space.

No joke, that's currently a problem that recently happened, they deleted movies off people's consoles, movies they bought, again sony's wording. I'm not saying fuck digital, but i sure as hell ain't keeping my important shit on there, if mcc gets removed off steam tomorrow, i own halo reaches physical edition, i can 100% tell them to eat my dust, I'll play halo reach regardless of it. • @Jack_80

they've already largely ruined physical game collecting, by intentionally designing it so every single game requires a large patch on release and a number of updates after that.
i find it difficult to believe that up until the ps3 era hardly any games required updates, but suddenly the ps4 comes out and it's impossible for any dev to put out a physical game that doesn't require an update. it's intentional to drastically lessen the appeal of collecting physical games.
now they're even starting to put out some games where the disc is nothing but a key, and you still have to download the game. that completely ruins the point of physical games and makes it nothing but an inconvenience.
and since the excuse is games are too big to fit on one disc, and games get larger every new generation, we're going to see a lot more of this when the ps6 and other next gen consoles come.

  • @Major73Problem
    @Major73Problem 9 місяців тому +1

Nothing ever gets cheaper. The cost increases might get slower by removing the cost of physical production. Why don't physical copies cost more at the store than the digital release? The download cards are the same as the disks. I would happily pay an additional 10-15% more for a physical game. I also believe it is a generational thing. Gen X has always had physical, gen Z is too busy fighting everyone to pay attention. The quality of media hasn't warranted a fight for physical copies. Games are never complete upon release anymore and movies are more about sending messages than entertainment. I have bought CD's but they have all been used and rares. Nothing of recent production is appealing anymore. I may have hit that age like my parents did when the culture became repulsive or lacking. I have also watched myself be priced out of collecting. Like you mentioned, the market practices have changed. Waiting six months for sales is more of a gamble now.

I'm with you all the way. Physical media is king. Although I do have Spotify for music but that's because of a few things: I cannot find reasonably priced copies of many of the CDs that I want, a lot of the stuff I want to listen to is only on streaming and isn't on CD, and the biggest problem is that my car doesn't even have a CD player although I have a few portable CD players that I could plug in, I've got too many CDs to reasonably bring with me. The biggest problem I have with streaming is with one of my family's favorite movies, Pretty Woman. On streaming they cut out the credits but during the credits plays the best song from the movie: No Explanation by Peter Cetera. Funny enough that song isn't on streaming. It sucks having everything spread out over all kinds of media. I'd love to have every album I like on CD, which is the best because CDs are a lossless format, but as for the previous reasons, that's sadly not possible.

The other day I saw that Persona 5 Royal was on sale at Best Buy but it was only in a certain location.
Couldn’t do pickup, couldn’t get delivery, and even asked a person why.
With Shipping, taxes later thinking of the time.
I said no, I am not going through heck again because last time I got burned on Black Friday because they gave me a PlayStation version instead of the game making me later return and couldn’t get back money on shipping.
I instead took the better deal of Persona 5, 4, 3. The version are digital. It was 60 but I got more.
When I was looking for Bayonetta one or 2 game for switch, I can get them for digital but physical… Non existent.
But it’s staying at 60 dollars and waiting for a sale.
So yeah… My thoughts on digital vs getting physical media.

It kind of makes sense for some games to be digital only. Modern Warfare required half of my 1tb hard drive for storage. They can't really put that on a disc, even though I think games don't need to be that large in the first place. Online multiplayer assets and cutting edge graphics take up all the storage. If they just made games with good single player stories and GAME graphics rather than photorealism the games would get better reviews and fit on discs. The discs we get now are pretty much installation files which still require additional downloaded files. Unfortunately you'll need multiple 4tb hard drives to download all the newer games.

I rip all my discs to HDDs and play the files on my Oppo player. That way I have near instantaneous access to everything I want to see/hear. This is how physical media works for me.

You only need to look at the increasing number of games , movies and shows that don’t get physical releases and it doesn’t look promising I blame subscription services for dwindling sales it’s like every new physical media production is limited run these days if it gets a physical release at all .

Neat vid, many good points. I have phys media, but pay for Netflix etc. to watch exclusive series and movies that may never get a phys release. Media you own and streaming can be complementary, right? Laserdisc was a FUN format, for sure!

disney made a very not so good move with elemental because they locked the regular 4k behind their disney movie club which kinda sucks me personally i am not a member of so i had no choice but to buy either of the exclusives from best buy/walmart but i guess for me in my case that part didnt matter to me because i preordered a copy from walmart before it actually came out just from experience i have not had any issues preordering in general

I am a collector of Physical Media and like you said it's mine and no one can take it. CD's, Blu-Rays, and PS Games are in my library. I love going into GameStop but even they have cut back so much. 25 Years ago the stores were all games now each of the big 3 has a corner of the store and the rest is figures and other stuff. So I'm 61 and like my wife said it's a sign of the times we live in, unfortunately . Good video.

The media moguls don't want you to own anything. They want to charge you to watch the movies, and eventually, it will not be monthly fee to stream, it will be a price per watch of each program and not just for first run movies. Listen to a song, pay a couple bucks. Play a game. Pay 5 bucks. Watch a movie, Pay 10 bucks. This is about mega profits instead of just obscene profits. Buy any movies you might want to watch a year or two from its release date, NOW.

The way I see it, both have downsides. Physical media has a sense of ownership to it, but at the same time, disc rot will always hit when you least expect it, and is becoming a lot more common now from what I can see. Digital media has almost no ownership, even when you buy a full license for a movie online, and digital media CAN be more trustworthy when it comes to degradation since they are digital files on a hard drive and not on a cheap plastic disc, but that is overshadowed by these big comglomerates revoking licenses whenever they please. Personally, I rip all of my movies to a jellyfin server, that way I not only have the control of physical media, but also the longevity of digital. And yes, I know that discs are supposed to last hundreds of years, but I've only ever stored my discs in proper conditions and the pile of rotted ones is only growing, especially when it comes to my blu rays, oddly enough.

Mostly good analysis. I will say that the music industry isn't as siloed as people think. I think in 2022, CDs outsold vinyl for the first time in years.

I'm not as deep in the music collecting business, so I'll fully admit my comments on that are probably not very accurate. I could only find 2022 data on CDs vs Vinyl for UK-specific sales, where CDs DID outsell vinyl, but I know here in the States that's not the case but I can't find any hard data on it.

So them going on this path doesn't affect me at all as I still have no interest in Game Pass and Microsoft hasn't given me any reason to invest in their console/ecosystem now or in the future.
