Well...Best Buy, Toys R Us and Wal-Mart seem to have done away with physical media, at least the ones in my area. I just store everything in hard drives.
I think another reason corporations are trying to replace physical with digital is because they don't make any money off the used market or trade-ins. It's all about greed and power. Once they sell a new copy of a dvd, they no longer make a profit if it's resold. With a digital system, they have total power over which shows you watch, when you can watch them, and how much you pay to do so. I'm starting to think digital is more of a corporate scam than the "new normal" they're pushing it as.

I'm so glad you mentioned quality! A few years ago I bought a really nice TV and pretty decent surround sound setup and I want to get my money's worth out of it. With my new setup I've found that streaming doesn't look or sound as good as a regular Blu-ray, and nowhere NEAR as good as a 4K disc. Especially older movies shot on film, 4k gets rid of that pixelated Netflix/UA-cam look. It looks like film!

I couldn’t find “the warriors” movie on streaming websites let alone the salty sea of pirates. Was walking around Barnes and noble and instantly caught my eye with a 50% off sticker and got it for 4 bucks
I kept all my CDs and DVDs ,but just the discs to save space been buying older movies too I fear streaming is unreliable things go off one and you can’t find it or studios take something away or censor something and change it from what it originally was
I completely agree. I was so excited for streaming, because I thought it would act as a great supplement to physical media and going to cinemas, like a triangle or resources all complimenting one another. It has turned out though, that streaming has/is devouring the other two points of the trinity, and it really gets me down. We used to have five cinemas in our city, now we have none. I used to be able to visit a number of stores to find what I wanted at the best price or the 2 disc or the extended cut, now (here in Australia) there are one or maybe two stores to visit. The quality, the basic ability to find on your shelf what streaming isn't offering or removed, or charging extra for on top of you subscription fee ar a few of my issues. The biggest is special features. When discs came out, I was blown away that the first movie I bought was Star Ship Troopers and that I was actually going to be able to listen to Paul Verhoeven do commentary while I watched the movie! WTF!!! Special features and commentary have always been sparse from older films because they didn't see the demand for them then but I NEVER thought commentary and special features would be dying off (and no, the VERY occasional special features on streaming are not enough, but at least disney has made some effort with the newer Star Wars series). I am a very nostalgic man, and it deeply saddens me that my seven year old son has never walked the aisles of a video store, been excited by new releases that are present that day and the anticipation of wanting to see it has brought, and spending relaxed time browsing through the weeklies to re-hire classics and take chances on unseen movies based on the the awesome covers, even if the movie turned out to be less fun than the cover art. The worst is that not only is streaming destroying physical media and cinema experiences, it isn't even absorbing it and greedily offering all it absorbs to take the sole profit. It is simply eating the other two aspects, excreting them and then flushing movies and features away that are never coming back. I do love streaming, don't get me wrong. To use my trinity example above, I feel like I have tree good friends and they all enrich my life in varied ways, but then one of those friends, the newest one, decides to scheme to break up the group and gets rid of the other two friends so that now the only friend I have is him, even though he doesn't replace what the other two brought to the table. Okay, maybe I prattled a bit there, but you get my point. Supplement= I loved streaming. Incomplete Replacement= I like streaming. Excellent video mate. We need more like you.
I just don't buy the BS that digital media companies are selling us. I will personally never sell off my physical media collection and "convert" to the cult of digital. There are too many reasons why physical is better, and the "convenience" of digital formats just doesn't provide enough incentive for me. Why rely on digital services with subscription fees that drain your bank account every month, and can take your favorite shows offline at will? Why rely on a big conglomerate like Netflix to protect your personal data when there's been tons of security breaches in the past few years? Why rely on an internet connection just to be able to watch something? That's the problem with digital - the reliance it requires. You're reliant on other people, whereas with a physical library, you're in total control. Internet goes out? No problem. No money in your bank account? You can still watch dvd's and play cartridge or disc-based games.
Great video!! It’s hard to articulate these arguments in person and in text if you don’t do it succinctly. I’ve noticed a habit I’m happy with after 10+ years of collecting, is that streaming is great for the public accessibility. For the budget argument, there’s no better solution than streaming. Having a physical copy is a luxury, only get the ones that you couldn’t stand to not have. Pass over the ones that mildly appeal if you don’t have the expendable income. Don’t splurge for FOMO or because someone else told you it’s a rare copy. Buy things that are exciting and enticing to you AND your friends. Again, great video. You hit a lot of the points that matter to most people. Here’s hoping the companies see the opportunity to continue to make money off of people like us and to keep printing discs and cover arts.
Most *current mainstream movies* are..... Disposable. You watch some contemporary film once and... That's it. Past 15 years - *latest Hollywood movies* have pretty pictures & loud noises with *zero substance* Nolan movies - you watch it once And *throw em the dustbin* But *There are quality films* that have *yet to be released* . Yeah there a lot of movies I have seen, I wouldn't want on disc even if it was given to me for free. But the ones that are great I would prefer to have the option .
I don't blame you at all. I own a small 4k collection of franchise movies. It gets expensive real fast. In 2019 they were mad cheap... compared to what they're now. if I were ton buy the same movies I bought 5 years ago... I'd be paying a lot more. For video games on pc I usually buy them digitally on sale when they are like 50%+ off depending on the game. One of my favorite tv shows is out of print and I no longer own it on disc. It would cost me at least $200 to ever watch it again.
I mainly use physical media to digitize and create digital files. If I, for example, would like to watch The Last Of The Mohicans, I wouldn’t want to sit back and watch the Director’s definitive cut. I’m keeping my region two DVDs and VHS tape since I love the theatrical release a lot more. Another example is beauty and the beast. Since 2002, I always love watching the special edition version of the film and never went back to watching its theatrical version.
It is funny cuz most modern movies are not worth watching more than once. Also, it's easier than ever to find illicit streaming sites that do in fact have whatever you want to watch.
You need unity first in order to have a say in what the cooperate sector authority is doing for their customers. Without unity, this cooperate trend with get much worse than it already is...and it's worse now!

Agreed with everything except your tidbit about SSD’s being a similar price to discs. It costs these manufacturers literal cents for each disc. Even 250GB SSD’s are nowhere near that price
dont know why this dude would prefer to have 200 SSDs that cost far more than discs, when storage devices have a lifespan, and you could just use Steam. Steam doesn't remove games from libraries, and you can play them offline.
As far as the Star Wars original not being George Lucas true vision, although hes the director I don't see it solely as his creation its a collaboration of all the artist actors etc, that brought it to life.
He should've just released a "George Lucas edition" or "Director's Cut" with the changes he wanted to make, alongside the original release. Replacing the originals or destroying them is just stupid, petty, selfish.
The importance of physical media continues to be undervalued, fortunately there are still holdouts like us. The only physical media I refuse to buy are the original Star Wars trilogy, not until I get my original theatrical cut! Love the 4k77/80/83 projects though and highly recommend them if you can find them. On a separate note, bro... get yourself an antistatic brush for your records, they'll sound so much better without all that list/dust all over them.
I feel like the star wars trilogy isn’t really a good example of how good physical media is, since it had a variety of releases in various states of alteration. The despecialised edition is reconstituted from all sorts of sources and only possible digitally.
I have reel to reels, 8-tracks, cassettes, 8mm, beta, vhs, 78s, 33s, 45s, CDs, laserdiscs, dvds, Blu-rays mini players, Walkmans a few still sealed, and they will NEVER be sold by me…
I agree 100% about the 4k discs and bluray etc. I have about 200 discs! But the you said the issue with games. Even buying the physical media doesn't solve the issue, now you need the disc AND the internet to play the damn thing. So buying the disc just ends up pissing us off and not solving anything. I am old school and when I bought my 1st ps5 disc and realized the full game wasn't even on the damn thing I decide I wouldn't buy anything anymore :( I own 3 PS5 discs and they are pretty much useless. I only play the free stuff from playstation plus or indie games. I assume if everyone did that it would help, but most people don't seem to care :(
I enjoyed this video - subscribed! As an avid collector of films and TV series on physical media, I agree with all of your main points, especially for releases with extra features (only the Criterion streaming service has decent support for extra features, and they're not available here in Australia). My only minor disagreement is your SSD suggestion at 6:44 - I think you underestimate the cost of SSDs compared to optical media. Optical media, when produced at scale, costs a handful of cents per copy, but even smaller SSDs show no sign of ever being that cheap. You and I might be willing to pay a premium for an SSD copy of a game or film, but I think we're part of a *tiny* minority. My suggestion would be U3 SD cards. They can be mass produced at scale for a price much closer to that of optical media (compared to SSDs), they last roughly as long as most mass produced optical media (it depends), and while not as fast as SSDs, are more than fast enough for high-bit-rate 4K video playback. As for distributing games, only the latest games that stream textures and geometry during game play need something faster than a U3 SD card. In those cases, SD cards are fast enough for quickly installing/copying the game to a PC's or console's SSD. What we REALLY need are gaming companies that not only distribute on SD card, but who are willing to update the SD card's data when it's mounted in the PC/console so that it has the latest version of the game ready to install and play on an *offline* PC or console in the future. Only consumer demand will create that reality, and I just don't think there is enough of it. A service like gog.com essentially offers this service for older games on PCs, in a way, as it allows you to copy the latest DRM-free installer to your own media for posterity. At least, this is possible for many games on their service. Anyway, like I said, I agree with everything else you said, you gained a subscriber! 👍
Thanks for the comment! My reasoning for the SSDs is because most if not all modern games require the speed of an ssd. When you buy a game physically these days all it does is transfer the info from the disc to the internal ssd. My goal there is to have something playable without having to move stuff around.
I appreciate people who preserve old movies and video games digitally and physically, but for me I just want there to be a *way* to access these titles in the future, in case i missed out on them like 10 years ago or whatever. I sold all my physical media like 8 years ago because i didn't really have the space or resources to put them anywhere and i didn't want to clutter my home with all that stuff. And that really begs the question if I should buy these dvds, blu-rays, physical copies again.
SSDs? I mean I guess it would work lol but I think disc art and cover art factors in to why people like physical also. I’m sure they’d use that as an excuse to upcharge if they had to customize the way and ssd looked
We care and always care, but what about the publisher and platform holder? Do they care about it more than their annual profit report to the stakeholder?
I'd rather have my games on Steam, ready to play at any time. Don't have to go to a store nor order them online. For physical games, I'd have to get a PC version of the disc and use it with an external optical drive. I'd have to get up and put a new disc in every time I want to play a different game. Only advantage to physical copies is reselling. Also, some games don't have physical copies and some are only for multiplayer. (Fortnite, Overwatch, many indie games) Also, modding requires replacing files. In order to do that for physical games, you'd have to create a new disc every time you change a file. Some consoles don't even have optical drives. Steam doesn't remove games from libraries. Physical orders have shipping costs and discs can be scratched. Take up too much space. On Steam, you can let a friend play your games when you are offline.
A physical game you should not add to your collection is disney dreamlight valley. It was in early access for a while and had plans of being released as a free-to-play game, which means it has a gamepass mechanic and a premium shop. The moonstone prices has always been extreme, but I think the worst part was that they made us believe it would be a free-to-play game to then decided "last minute" that they would keep it as a paid game and that there is now a DLC, even through the base game is not done. They also said they would not paywall characters, to then paywall Eva (from wall-e) in the DLC while Wall-e is in the base game, with a quest about getting ready for Evas arrival! It pissed me off. I really hope that we will be able to turn the industry around and have them finish their game before they release them and that we will be able to continue buying it physically. I really want to own Arcane, but so far it does not seem to be a possibility.
I've pretty much given up on physical games of the modern era especially when they release dlc's later on making your previous copy feel incomplete. I feel like anything after the wii/360/ps3 era just feels pointless because games became more focused on on online multi-player options & on top of companies shutting down their servers and what not. I'll still buy 4k movies, but the prices are steep. Some movies be like $60 for a single movie.
@@b4rs629 It is a pricy time we live in. I don't like to see games going for 70$. I agree with you. I don't mind DLC as much if it comes out a lot later. I mainly have an issue with "first day" DLC, because if you are going to release the content on the same day as the release it should be on the disk.

This is the goodness of video capturing for when they pull this mess the joke still falls back on them or when the internet goes down you still have that content digitally to enjoy offline. With that said, I absolutely agree with you on all fronts but 2 things I want to bring to you and they are the event a broken disc or it takes up space and the idea of digital content is to be able to enjoy it without worrying about a broken disc or space saving challenges. I still say that content should be made available and enjoyable offline too and we should not have to subscribe to anything just to enjoy digital content period. They need to take an example from Movies Everywhere or online stores that still sell movies or tv shows or games to buy outright where you do not have to subscribe to anything and that content is available online and offline.
Star Wars is an unfortunate choice as the only versions you can find on modern physical media is the special editions. You have to turn to digital means of getting your hands on 4K77 and 4K80 or the Harmy's despecialized editions. Or you'll have to go and find the 2006 or VHS copies of the mostly unaltered versions of the Original Trilogy.
Capitalism does not value Art, it values Property and Profit of said Property. And they will make sure they're the only ones who profit of said Property until it becomes Dust. That is why these companies do not care. Also on a side note, 8K Optical Disc has already been invented. They can store up to 1 Terabyte of Data which is wonderful! So there might not be a need for games to be distributed on SSDs yet. That being said, part of the reason AAA video games have such Big Files now, is because of the Sharp Production Deadlines that the Corporate Publishers have Force onto their Studios, which in turn made them leave so much Uncompressed Data Bloat on their Installments. The Call Of Duty Franchise has become a big example of this growing problem, cuz they're Annual Release Scale for their Annual Profits has become such a Cancer to it's overall quality, need I say more.
Depends on your setup. I bought a series x to play 4k movies since I game as well. The cost of 4k players alone you're looking $4-500 for something good that allows discs. The cheaper 4k players are mainly streaming only. If you're not into gaming a dedicated 4k player would most likely be better though.
Only way I see saving physical media is to start up our own media companies and physical media enthusiasts, and ensuring that we keep it alive, even if by brute force. Good Lord knows the current studios won't because subscriptions and microtransactions are the current market meta...
Owning media is great, but in reality nothings changed since the 80s and 90s. Ever since video stores became a thing there was no need to own the movie because most will watch something once. Instead of renting a video foe 3 days from blockbuster for $3 now people pay $15 and essentially get the samething with a vastly broader selection thats more convenient to access and a wider wi dow of time to access it.
I think the whole "digital only" thing is mostly an issue due to lack of knowledge and understanding on how things work these days. When "digital only" was new and all that, people (most likely) just assumed that "buying" digital only means owning it, just like a physical release , except that most places selling digital only content don't actually "sell" it. It's more along the lines of "renting it for a unlimited amount of time until the company decides to revoke your right to access it (or closes their servers)" Putting things on SSDs also wouldn't really be a good solution, since you ideally want them to be powered on every now and then in order to maintain the files on them. Otherwise (according to what internet says) the files can get corrupted, if you leave a disk / SSD without power for months or years. Most people might buy a game, play it once, then put it in a box for several years.. so digging up old copies of games (or well, HDDs / SSDs in this case) might just result in a drive that powers on but doesn't have a functioning copy of the game / product you bought anymore. Most physical releases have some kind of issues with them as well, just like digital. Digital, in a way is good, because as long as you have access to the data / files, you can just make as many copies of it as you want.. or well, backups, in this case. But it's still on you to remember to maintain these backups and not neglect them for years or decades 😅

I buy books and movies/series i think are worth a re-watch or read but theres not many movies after 2010 worth buying and most tv series worth buying now you cant buy its exclusive to streaming, and when it comes to games i primarily just use gamepass to play games i only buy games when they go on sale super cheap if i like them or ill buy a game if i know i will play it alot which theres not many of these and most of the ones i would buy i dont need to because Microsoft owns then very few of my favorites aren't now
Another major example is Cyberpunk 2077, launch disc is literally unplayable crashing mess of bugs... even on next gen which I started off with. *I refuse to even buy for posterity the latest re-release "2.0" which completely fixed but also rewrote the entire gameplay mechanics, similarly to how George Lucas destroyed the original Star Wars trilogy films after remastering effects, the game is unrecognizable in terms of gameplay and numerous 'rebalancing' my strategy guide is useless (though there were already changes at launch to make some walkthroughs incorrect)...though the story is unchanged. I did however downloaded the final 120GB version "1.63h3" before this overhaul released preserving it on an external HDD, thankfully GOG has DRM free offline installers, realizing *some* players prefer the old game dynamics they labeled it 'legacy version' despite the numerous updates since, it remains. *Secondly, this new physical release launched the exact same day as an additional "2.1" major quality of life update, which should have been on this disc, yet the purpose of another physical release was mostly to increase sales of the new expansion, which conveniently was *not* on the PS5 single disc but a 'downloadable' DLC, but only for PS5... Xbox had TWO additional discs including the expansion, also missing the "2.1" update. PC? Forget it, literally a useless box other than a GOG download code. The base launch edition had MUCH more in box despite being buggy as hell. I *MAY* purchase a 'complete edition' if that ever becomes a thing, even if they erase my preferred male V off any documentation, I could print a new cover. *As you said, the games aren't even playable unless they get constant updates, now we're on 2.12 fixing bugs and rebalancing presented in 2.0... It never ends. When games were on finalized physical media, there were cheats and glitches which added to the character and playability of games, now they try to remove any of these elements counter to 'entertainment' deciding what we should be doing with the game. Example: At launch (or on disc) there was still a debug console to insert commands, that was removed by a required zero day launch update. Sorry for the paragraph, I love this game, as it was and how it is...but they are different like "The Lion King" animated vs the CGI remake, good but different.
I think it's because money wise $20 to watch as much content as possible vs $10-$60 for a 4k movie just feels like poorer financial choice. I prefer physical media. I have curated collection of 4k titles & the prices are insane. Blu-rays a definitely cheaper, but trying to find them second hand for more niche titles is definitely harder.
Looks like a lot of people are finally seeing the consequences of bad choices and realizing that they don't like it. Unfortunately, the choices can't be undone and the companies have all the money and power now. It would take a mass exodus of every consumer from the market to reset things, and that'll never happen because no fewer than 50% are mindless zombies, and at least another 25% feel like it's too hard to fight so just give up and act as a mindless zombie. Stop buying all games from major studios. Only buy from indie studios and only after you find out what their politics are, and more importantly, stop buying every game you see and instead only buy one game a year if even that often. If you want good stories and good gameplay, you need to vote with your wallet towards the center. It's likely that no one will see this because UA-cam will likely censor it, and even should they not I likely won't see replies because it won't notify me anyway, but I'm putting it out there just in case and hoping that others follow my example.
I still buy from Nintendo because they keep their games on the cart, and update the carts to the latest patch. Its not perfect but better than what these other studios are doing on PS and Xbox. Digital is for indies or free games on my PC, but most of my free games are indies or older titles that I have the discs on other platforms, so that works for me, lol.
Yeah, nice point of view, but typically from console perspective, not pc user. I dont have console, i even dont like xbox or playstation. My physical copy of games have years of realese ends in 2012, and even from this year was very hard to get physical game, not launcher installer for steam. But, at least i have mods, and if something go out i can pirate my library.
tbh preservation of games on PC is very diffrent from console perspective. Because best way of this is to copy data of game, zip this and transfer to some kind of local server or data storage. And ofcourse- it must be HDD, because it is more resistant to the passage of time, has a chance of restoring data, the recording is more durable due to the physics of the disk.
i dont understand why people act like this is some conspiracy instead of a natural order of events that would occur under a broken economic system. even if the majority of consumers decided they want physical media, companies will always choose the cheaper option.
I like physical media, but please don't repeat that lie. Physical media is NOT profitable. That's literally the reason the DVD market hit rock bottom. It's just not. And much to most people's complaining, Streaming didn't stop physical media ownership. People were quite happy with blockbuster etc without owning it.
Then why are Spotify, Netflix and Apple Music so popular? Today's physical games are nothing more than unlock codes for the digital download any so you've all been scammed. Steam has been popular for many years now that PCs don't even need a disc drive to play games or install windows anymore. With the Steam Deck you can literally take your games on the road and NO NEED TO BUY TWICE. Digital is the future.

I go the binder route with DVD's it takes up as much space as 4 DVD cases :)

Special features and commentary have always been sparse from older films because they didn't see the demand for them then but I NEVER thought commentary and special features would be dying off (and no, the VERY occasional special features on streaming are not enough, but at least disney has made some effort with the newer Star Wars series).
I am a very nostalgic man, and it deeply saddens me that my seven year old son has never walked the aisles of a video store, been excited by new releases that are present that day and the anticipation of wanting to see it has brought, and spending relaxed time browsing through the weeklies to re-hire classics and take chances on unseen movies based on the the awesome covers, even if the movie turned out to be less fun than the cover art.
The worst is that not only is streaming destroying physical media and cinema experiences, it isn't even absorbing it and greedily offering all it absorbs to take the sole profit. It is simply eating the other two aspects, excreting them and then flushing movies and features away that are never coming back.
I do love streaming, don't get me wrong. To use my trinity example above, I feel like I have tree good friends and they all enrich my life in varied ways, but then one of those friends, the newest one, decides to scheme to break up the group and gets rid of the other two friends so that now the only friend I have is him, even though he doesn't replace what the other two brought to the table. Okay, maybe I prattled a bit there, but you get my point.

I just don't buy the BS that digital media companies are selling us. I will personally never sell off my physical media collection and "convert" to the cult of digital. There are too many reasons why physical is better, and the "convenience" of digital formats just doesn't provide enough incentive for me. Why rely on digital services with subscription fees that drain your bank account every month, and can take your favorite shows offline at will? Why rely on a big conglomerate like Netflix to protect your personal data when there's been tons of security breaches in the past few years? Why rely on an internet connection just to be able to watch something? That's the problem with digital - the reliance it requires. You're reliant on other people, whereas with a physical library, you're in total control. Internet goes out? No problem. No money in your bank account? You can still watch dvd's and play cartridge or disc-based games.
Great video!! It’s hard to articulate these arguments in person and in text if you don’t do it succinctly. I’ve noticed a habit I’m happy with after 10+ years of collecting, is that streaming is great for the public accessibility. For the budget argument, there’s no better solution than streaming. Having a physical copy is a luxury, only get the ones that you couldn’t stand to not have. Pass over the ones that mildly appeal if you don’t have the expendable income. Don’t splurge for FOMO or because someone else told you it’s a rare copy. Buy things that are exciting and enticing to you AND your friends.
Again, great video. You hit a lot of the points that matter to most people. Here’s hoping the companies see the opportunity to continue to make money off of people like us and to keep printing discs and cover arts.

Yeah there a lot of movies I have seen, I wouldn't want on disc even if it was given to me for free. But the ones that are great I would prefer to have the option .
I am not going to spend between $20-70 on a game or movie and not own it. I'd only rent. A lot of new content nowadays ain't even worth owning, tbh.
I don't blame you at all. I own a small 4k collection of franchise movies. It gets expensive real fast. In 2019 they were mad cheap... compared to what they're now. if I were ton buy the same movies I bought 5 years ago... I'd be paying a lot more. For video games on pc I usually buy them digitally on sale when they are like 50%+ off depending on the game.
One of my favorite tv shows is out of print and I no longer own it on disc. It would cost me at least $200 to ever watch it again.
I mainly use physical media to digitize and create digital files. If I, for example, would like to watch The Last Of The Mohicans, I wouldn’t want to sit back and watch the Director’s definitive cut. I’m keeping my region two DVDs and VHS tape since I love the theatrical release a lot more. Another example is beauty and the beast. Since 2002, I always love watching the special edition version of the film and never went back to watching its theatrical version.
It is funny cuz most modern movies are not worth watching more than once. Also, it's easier than ever to find illicit streaming sites that do in fact have whatever you want to watch.

Agreed with everything except your tidbit about SSD’s being a similar price to discs. It costs these manufacturers literal cents for each disc. Even 250GB SSD’s are nowhere near that price

As far as the Star Wars original not being George Lucas true vision, although hes the director I don't see it solely as his creation its a collaboration of all the artist actors etc, that brought it to life.
He should've just released a "George Lucas edition" or "Director's Cut" with the changes he wanted to make, alongside the original release. Replacing the originals or destroying them is just stupid, petty, selfish.

The importance of physical media continues to be undervalued, fortunately there are still holdouts like us. The only physical media I refuse to buy are the original Star Wars trilogy, not until I get my original theatrical cut! Love the 4k77/80/83 projects though and highly recommend them if you can find them.
On a separate note, bro... get yourself an antistatic brush for your records, they'll sound so much better without all that list/dust all over them.
I feel like the star wars trilogy isn’t really a good example of how good physical media is, since it had a variety of releases in various states of alteration. The despecialised edition is reconstituted from all sorts of sources and only possible digitally.

I agree 100% about the 4k discs and bluray etc. I have about 200 discs! But the you said the issue with games. Even buying the physical media doesn't solve the issue, now you need the disc AND the internet to play the damn thing. So buying the disc just ends up pissing us off and not solving anything. I am old school and when I bought my 1st ps5 disc and realized the full game wasn't even on the damn thing I decide I wouldn't buy anything anymore :( I own 3 PS5 discs and they are pretty much useless. I only play the free stuff from playstation plus or indie games. I assume if everyone did that it would help, but most people don't seem to care :(

As an avid collector of films and TV series on physical media, I agree with all of your main points, especially for releases with extra features (only the Criterion streaming service has decent support for extra features, and they're not available here in Australia).
My only minor disagreement is your SSD suggestion at 6:44 - I think you underestimate the cost of SSDs compared to optical media. Optical media, when produced at scale, costs a handful of cents per copy, but even smaller SSDs show no sign of ever being that cheap. You and I might be willing to pay a premium for an SSD copy of a game or film, but I think we're part of a *tiny* minority.
My suggestion would be U3 SD cards. They can be mass produced at scale for a price much closer to that of optical media (compared to SSDs), they last roughly as long as most mass produced optical media (it depends), and while not as fast as SSDs, are more than fast enough for high-bit-rate 4K video playback. As for distributing games, only the latest games that stream textures and geometry during game play need something faster than a U3 SD card. In those cases, SD cards are fast enough for quickly installing/copying the game to a PC's or console's SSD.
What we REALLY need are gaming companies that not only distribute on SD card, but who are willing to update the SD card's data when it's mounted in the PC/console so that it has the latest version of the game ready to install and play on an *offline* PC or console in the future. Only consumer demand will create that reality, and I just don't think there is enough of it.
A service like gog.com essentially offers this service for older games on PCs, in a way, as it allows you to copy the latest DRM-free installer to your own media for posterity. At least, this is possible for many games on their service.
Anyway, like I said, I agree with everything else you said, you gained a subscriber! 👍
Thanks for the comment! My reasoning for the SSDs is because most if not all modern games require the speed of an ssd. When you buy a game physically these days all it does is transfer the info from the disc to the internal ssd. My goal there is to have something playable without having to move stuff around.
I appreciate people who preserve old movies and video games digitally and physically, but for me I just want there to be a *way* to access these titles in the future, in case i missed out on them like 10 years ago or whatever.
I sold all my physical media like 8 years ago because i didn't really have the space or resources to put them anywhere and i didn't want to clutter my home with all that stuff. And that really begs the question if I should buy these dvds, blu-rays, physical copies again.
Start a plex server. You can maintain owning the content with the benefits of streaming and quality of the discs

I'd rather have my games on Steam, ready to play at any time. Don't have to go to a store nor order them online. For physical games, I'd have to get a PC version of the disc and use it with an external optical drive. I'd have to get up and put a new disc in every time I want to play a different game.
Only advantage to physical copies is reselling. Also, some games don't have physical copies and some are only for multiplayer. (Fortnite, Overwatch, many indie games)
Also, modding requires replacing files. In order to do that for physical games, you'd have to create a new disc every time you change a file. Some consoles don't even have optical drives.
Steam doesn't remove games from libraries.
Physical orders have shipping costs and discs can be scratched. Take up too much space. On Steam, you can let a friend play your games when you are offline.
A physical game you should not add to your collection is disney dreamlight valley. It was in early access for a while and had plans of being released as a free-to-play game, which means it has a gamepass mechanic and a premium shop. The moonstone prices has always been extreme, but I think the worst part was that they made us believe it would be a free-to-play game to then decided "last minute" that they would keep it as a paid game and that there is now a DLC, even through the base game is not done. They also said they would not paywall characters, to then paywall Eva (from wall-e) in the DLC while Wall-e is in the base game, with a quest about getting ready for Evas arrival! It pissed me off.
I really hope that we will be able to turn the industry around and have them finish their game before they release them and that we will be able to continue buying it physically. I really want to own Arcane, but so far it does not seem to be a possibility.
I've pretty much given up on physical games of the modern era especially when they release dlc's later on making your previous copy feel incomplete. I feel like anything after the wii/360/ps3 era just feels pointless because games became more focused on on online multi-player options & on top of companies shutting down their servers and what not.
I'll still buy 4k movies, but the prices are steep. Some movies be like $60 for a single movie.

I agree with you. I don't mind DLC as much if it comes out a lot later. I mainly have an issue with "first day" DLC, because if you are going to release the content on the same day as the release it should be on the disk.

I have maybe bought 3 digital games for the last couple of years. I only buy physical even if i have to pay more.
This is the goodness of video capturing for when they pull this mess the joke still falls back on them or when the internet goes down you still have that content digitally to enjoy offline.
With that said, I absolutely agree with you on all fronts but 2 things I want to bring to you and they are the event a broken disc or it takes up space and the idea of digital content is to be able to enjoy it without worrying about a broken disc or space saving challenges.
I still say that content should be made available and enjoyable offline too and we should not have to subscribe to anything just to enjoy digital content period. They need to take an example from Movies Everywhere or online stores that still sell movies or tv shows or games to buy outright where you do not have to subscribe to anything and that content is available online and offline.

Star Wars is an unfortunate choice as the only versions you can find on modern physical media is the special editions. You have to turn to digital means of getting your hands on 4K77 and 4K80 or the Harmy's despecialized editions. Or you'll have to go and find the 2006 or VHS copies of the mostly unaltered versions of the Original Trilogy.
As much as I wanna play alan wake 2 I won't even bother to spend full price on digital game...
Capitalism does not value Art, it values Property and Profit of said Property. And they will make sure they're the only ones who profit of said Property until it becomes Dust. That is why these companies do not care.
Also on a side note, 8K Optical Disc has already been invented. They can store up to 1 Terabyte of Data which is wonderful! So there might not be a need for games to be distributed on SSDs yet. That being said, part of the reason AAA video games have such Big Files now, is because of the Sharp Production Deadlines that the Corporate Publishers have Force onto their Studios, which in turn made them leave so much Uncompressed Data Bloat on their Installments. The Call Of Duty Franchise has become a big example of this growing problem, cuz they're Annual Release Scale for their Annual Profits has become such a Cancer to it's overall quality, need I say more.

Depends on your setup. I bought a series x to play 4k movies since I game as well. The cost of 4k players alone you're looking $4-500 for something good that allows discs. The cheaper 4k players are mainly streaming only. If you're not into gaming a dedicated 4k player would most likely be better though.

Owning media is great, but in reality nothings changed since the 80s and 90s. Ever since video stores became a thing there was no need to own the movie because most will watch something once. Instead of renting a video foe 3 days from blockbuster for $3 now people pay $15 and essentially get the samething with a vastly broader selection thats more convenient to access and a wider wi dow of time to access it.
I think the whole "digital only" thing is mostly an issue due to lack of knowledge and understanding on how things work these days. When "digital only" was new and all that, people (most likely) just assumed that "buying" digital only means owning it, just like a physical release , except that most places selling digital only content don't actually "sell" it. It's more along the lines of "renting it for a unlimited amount of time until the company decides to revoke your right to access it (or closes their servers)"
Putting things on SSDs also wouldn't really be a good solution, since you ideally want them to be powered on every now and then in order to maintain the files on them. Otherwise (according to what internet says) the files can get corrupted, if you leave a disk / SSD without power for months or years. Most people might buy a game, play it once, then put it in a box for several years.. so digging up old copies of games (or well, HDDs / SSDs in this case) might just result in a drive that powers on but doesn't have a functioning copy of the game / product you bought anymore.
Most physical releases have some kind of issues with them as well, just like digital. Digital, in a way is good, because as long as you have access to the data / files, you can just make as many copies of it as you want.. or well, backups, in this case. But it's still on you to remember to maintain these backups and not neglect them for years or decades 😅
This is a very good video and I'm a believer in physical media (I have a huge collection of DVD and Blu Rays), but why did you use a cover of some guy who is clearly a model or trying to be one instead of yourself holding a piece of physical media? Seemed kinda click bait-ish.

I buy books and movies/series i think are worth a re-watch or read but theres not many movies after 2010 worth buying and most tv series worth buying now you cant buy its exclusive to streaming, and when it comes to games i primarily just use gamepass to play games i only buy games when they go on sale super cheap if i like them or ill buy a game if i know i will play it alot which theres not many of these and most of the ones i would buy i dont need to because Microsoft owns then very few of my favorites aren't now
Another major example is Cyberpunk 2077, launch disc is literally unplayable crashing mess of bugs... even on next gen which I started off with.
*I refuse to even buy for posterity the latest re-release "2.0" which completely fixed but also rewrote the entire gameplay mechanics,
similarly to how George Lucas destroyed the original Star Wars trilogy films after remastering effects,
the game is unrecognizable in terms of gameplay and numerous 'rebalancing' my strategy guide is useless (though there were already changes at launch to make some walkthroughs incorrect)...though the story is unchanged.
I did however downloaded the final 120GB version "1.63h3" before this overhaul released preserving it on an external HDD, thankfully GOG has DRM free offline installers, realizing *some* players prefer the old game dynamics they labeled it 'legacy version' despite the numerous updates since, it remains.
*Secondly, this new physical release launched the exact same day as an additional "2.1" major quality of life update, which should have been on this disc,
yet the purpose of another physical release was mostly to increase sales of the new expansion, which conveniently was *not* on the PS5 single disc but a 'downloadable' DLC, but only for PS5... Xbox had TWO additional discs including the expansion, also missing the "2.1" update.
PC? Forget it, literally a useless box other than a GOG download code. The base launch edition had MUCH more in box despite being buggy as hell.
I *MAY* purchase a 'complete edition' if that ever becomes a thing, even if they erase my preferred male V off any documentation, I could print a new cover.
*As you said, the games aren't even playable unless they get constant updates, now we're on 2.12 fixing bugs and rebalancing presented in 2.0...
It never ends. When games were on finalized physical media, there were cheats and glitches which added to the character and playability of games, now they try to remove any of these elements counter to 'entertainment' deciding what we should be doing with the game.
Example: At launch (or on disc) there was still a debug console to insert commands, that was removed by a required zero day launch update.
Sorry for the paragraph, I love this game, as it was and how it is...but they are different like "The Lion King" animated vs the CGI remake, good but different.

I think it's because money wise $20 to watch as much content as possible vs $10-$60 for a 4k movie just feels like poorer financial choice. I prefer physical media. I have curated collection of 4k titles & the prices are insane. Blu-rays a definitely cheaper, but trying to find them second hand for more niche titles is definitely harder.
Looks like a lot of people are finally seeing the consequences of bad choices and realizing that they don't like it. Unfortunately, the choices can't be undone and the companies have all the money and power now. It would take a mass exodus of every consumer from the market to reset things, and that'll never happen because no fewer than 50% are mindless zombies, and at least another 25% feel like it's too hard to fight so just give up and act as a mindless zombie. Stop buying all games from major studios. Only buy from indie studios and only after you find out what their politics are, and more importantly, stop buying every game you see and instead only buy one game a year if even that often. If you want good stories and good gameplay, you need to vote with your wallet towards the center. It's likely that no one will see this because UA-cam will likely censor it, and even should they not I likely won't see replies because it won't notify me anyway, but I'm putting it out there just in case and hoping that others follow my example.
I still buy from Nintendo because they keep their games on the cart, and update the carts to the latest patch. Its not perfect but better than what these other studios are doing on PS and Xbox. Digital is for indies or free games on my PC, but most of my free games are indies or older titles that I have the discs on other platforms, so that works for me, lol.

Yeah, nice point of view, but typically from console perspective, not pc user. I dont have console, i even dont like xbox or playstation. My physical copy of games have years of realese ends in 2012, and even from this year was very hard to get physical game, not launcher installer for steam.
But, at least i have mods, and if something go out i can pirate my library.
tbh preservation of games on PC is very diffrent from console perspective. Because best way of this is to copy data of game, zip this and transfer to some kind of local server or data storage. And ofcourse- it must be HDD, because it is more resistant to the passage of time, has a chance of restoring data, the recording is more durable due to the physics of the disk.

I like physical media, but please don't repeat that lie. Physical media is NOT profitable. That's literally the reason the DVD market hit rock bottom. It's just not. And much to most people's complaining, Streaming didn't stop physical media ownership. People were quite happy with blockbuster etc without owning it.
Then why are Spotify, Netflix and Apple Music so popular? Today's physical games are nothing more than unlock codes for the digital download any so you've all been scammed. Steam has been popular for many years now that PCs don't even need a disc drive to play games or install windows anymore. With the Steam Deck you can literally take your games on the road and NO NEED TO BUY TWICE. Digital is the future.
