In this video I show how I split a huge Red Oak Log into two halves for my sawmill. The Timber was an old growth tree when harvested and was close to 46in diam on the largest end of the log This log was too big for my sawmill's capacity. I used an axe,wedges and a hydraulic jack to split the log so I can fit it on the sawmill. I hope to have the logs on the sawmill this coming week for processing into quarter sawn boards.

Had the occasion to hand split virgin Western Red Ceder when I lived in Washington State, in the 70's and early 80's . For fence posts. We used metal wedges like you are, but we also used wooden gluts made from the limbs from the trees. You could make them much wider then the metal wedges. We would start with a metal wedge, then use the gluts to widen the split. Along with reaching into the split with a chainsaw to cut the occasional knot. Love your videos, keep it up.

Howdy Nathan, couldn't help but think that if time travel was possible how cool it would be to go back and actually see how the shipwrights of old processed trees to lumber for building.....then again if time travel was possible and they came forward in time and saw the modern chainsaws and other machinery of our times....but I digress. Hard work for sure but very satisfying when the log is split. Have A Day! ;~)

I used to love splitting up huge rounds of oak with wedges and a sledge hammer. Very satisfying labor.

We currently have a Norwood HD 36 which can’t do a log wider than 29 inches. We have been stacking up logs that are much larger than that in the 50 and 60 inch category and we’re investing in a new saw. We are purchasing a D & L sling blade that has a 70 inch slabing bar on it. It’s going to be a game changer. Have fun everyone and be safe and have a blessed day
Fascinating video. I was watching a YT Video about Viking Ship Building. After they cut and seasoned the log….???oak… they used large wood wedges that were aprox. 6” on the driven head end and ??? 21/2-3.00 feet long.
I feel you brother! We had an 16inch Norway Maple log too big for us to lift into our chipper. When other co-workers have the Bobcat and you want to finish the job to close it out. Fire up the Stihl 361 and cut it in half.

I know I'm getting old, I take a 3ft level draw a plumb line through the pith at each end, snap a chalk line and rip it with the 660 with a 3' bar. Roll and repeat. You can squeeze a little larger log by taking the first slab off sliding it over not raising the stops. Roll,, repeat , then raise the stops and plumb it. Works on the Lt40 not sure what hight you can raise on the lt35
Do a follow-up video of your qtr sawn lumber. As st8 a grain as that is they'd have to be beautiful! Loved working with red oak!

You don't see so many men these days that will spend the time to get things done old school which when you think of it was wedges and sweat but the others never know that feeling you have when you stand back and look at what you achieved. There was a reason why old school worked so well, they did not have the money or the machinery we have today but they were so incredibly ingenious in their application of force to get work done. You should look into the atom splitter. It would work great on a large log like that, especially after you score it with the chainsaw. Nice job, though lots of work!

Maybe you should get an Alaskan saw mill, so you can take a couple slabs off, enough for it to fit on the Woodmizer. A lot less work and you get a couple usable slabs, less waste.
I have an Alaskan mill with a 60in bar, Oak is not valuable in slabs, quartering the log is the only way to get the best wood and most $ out of oak. no waste here other than the kerf of the chain/bar. All the wood split was quarter sawn. The following video shows that process. I don't mind the work, doesn't feel like it to me when it comes to trees great exercise also. Thanks for watching,

without a doubt, it really helped out on getting the final split done,
I was shopping at Ace Hardware in Blue Ridge, Ga. and they sell a bunch of Amish furniture. Some of those big wooden dining tables were fetching $2,000. Even at 100% markup, someone built that table with hardly any cost in material. Of course equipment ain't cheap. I heard a lady say 'live edge' and I looked but there was no bark but it wasn't a cut edge either. I don't know what you call that.

Can I make a suggestion? Why don't you build a helical screw type wood splitter for the pro of your tractor? It would save you a lot of work.
I do a good few logs like this for a friend that has a Loglogic AutoTrek mill it can take 40" dia, did a lot with 090 and 60" bar freehand then made what I can only describe as a mini mill on steriods to get a more precise cut and have now settled on a twin power head bar on my home made "alaskan" mill. That log of yours looks like it has very nice grain and real tight too ?

That auto trek sounds like a beast.
Working the big logs is a disadvantage of a bandsaw mill. That was a good amount of effort you put into splitting the log into sections to make quarter sawn lumber. If someone in your area had a swingblade sawmill (Peterson, Lucas, Turbosawmill, etc) they could have quarter sawn your log in place and then the challenge of removing the boards is a whole lot easier than trying to move the whole log at one shot.
true but it took me an hour to bust up this log and didn't cost me anything $. I would have hated to pay someone for something I can do with some effort,

Interesting. However a Haddon or Alaska Mill would remove the offcuts. The resulting cant would easily fit in the mill and be ready to slab.

How'd you get that on the mill? I've got a manual mill with ramps and no tractor. I'm guessing you have a tractor
If the log was six inches too large for the saw mill, perhaps it would be more expedient to slab off two, three to four inch slabs off opposite sides with an Alaskan chainsaw mill, as you have the large Stihl with a 4 foot bar, rather than waiting for 2 years. Just wondering your thoughts. Splitting big log even with a hydraulic wedge tool still looks like heavy duty job.
And to think of how much split rail fence was made just like this....
The automotive tool will certainly pay for itself..

Just curious why not chainsaw mill it into quarters and then put it on the woodmizer you be got the 880 with a 4 ft bar? wouldn't that be easier. like I said just curious I'm sure a man with your experience has his reasons
good question, it would have been easier, I have a 6ft bar also for that saw. I have always wanted to split a log like this mostly by hand, and after doing so it was very rewarding. For me hard work makes for good experience. Thanks for watching,,

Hello Nathan. Have you ever considered using black powder to split those big logs? I have seen other sawyers do it and it seems to work quite well with minimal wood loss.

that is a great idea and would be a great tool for these big logs!

Man that 880 and the 48in bar look puny up against that log. I think you have an excuse to get a bigger saw and bar I know I would use the excuse to get a new toy to play with.
I agree, I do have a 60in bar for that saw but it is very hard to control.
Why not just pick the log up and get it off the ground then use the four foot bar and saw to cut it in half? Block the lo.g up off the ground is what I meant. Jus asking
Had no way to pick it up, my bobcat will only lift 1500lb, this log weighed twice that at least,
