My nephew asked me why I am not wearing lipsticks anymore. Told him it was not worth it because no kne would see it and it would transfer to the mask. I think he was a bit miffed that I counted him as 'no one'... but the best bit was his surprised face when he realised that lipstick transfers - and a bitch to wash out. He is 11.
Visible lipliner was very much a trend in the early-mid 80s as well. I vividly remember my fourth grade teacher wearing dark lip liner and pale frosted lipstick, and that would have been about 1983-84. It was a thing for sure, much earlier than the late 90s.
true!!! i wouldnt touch gloss (still on the fence but now i have a couple i got from ipsy boxes...) i still like matte more because of practicality but i wonder if there will be a definable trend!
I just wanted to add that for the first half of the 1920s, lipstick was drawn very thinly with sharp corners. The round, beestung look only came into vogue in the second half of the decade. (LisaFremontStreet's video "The 1920's Tutorial" offers a very in-depth explanation)
We circle back every now and then, you may see trends in models but I don't know how they would advertise that, would be interesting if the doll-faced beauties of the 2000s came back, this look has been disregarded a little over the last decade in exchange for bone structure, that's because the doll-faced look is mostly due to collagen production and therefore those models don't age particularly well, longevity is more desirable for most people. For those doll-faced models, once they start to age and the amount of collagen production reduces, it's fillers or bust essentially.
I hope thinner lips become more popular in the Western countries. Over in Japan smaller lips ARE the more ideal beauty. I 100% prefer that we accept ALL lip sizes and shapes. BUT i do hope that small lips stop getting treated as if they are a BAD thing. Talk to almost any female under the age of 40(and many older as well) and they will say things like, "ew small lips suck", or "i wish i had big full lips", "or omg look at her lovely full lips", or "i would look prettier with bigger lips". And SOOO many people get lip injections. And ill be honest...i used to want them as well. I always felt i looked weird with lipstick cause of my tiny lips, and it would make me more pretty. I mean...i am not AGAINST plastic surgery...not ALL of it. But i AM AGAINST making it seem like theres only ONE type of beautiful, and if you dont look EXACTLY like that then your "not as beautiful", "could be cuter", or "have flaws". I dont BELIEVE in FLAWS, or UGLY PEOPLE. Every country has their own beauty standards. But everyone always says "love yourself", then they go and change half their face and body, or they create a very narrow minded beauty standard. And its all sad to me.
look up Dilraba Dilmurat... she is so gorgeous and her features look so elegant. To me, the natural fullness of each person's lips always matches their face best
I think the 2020s will be most like the 70s for makeup and hair(Since the 2010s focused on all parts of the face). The lips were very full and colored more of a darker nude. I think now we will focus on lighter colors and more of a thinner lip since the ones from the 2010s were so full. I think right now since everyone is doing every kind of look, everything will be more natural and basic.
You are probably considering what could have been considered the mainstream standard of beauty, but the 70s first saw a great variety of colours, it was a lot of browns and purples, Biba had plenty of those in its range along with blue, yellow, green and silver. Your videos are always 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻 also your lips/face looks beautiful in any era! It's magic ✨
I hated..... HATED being a teen in the 90’s with all the damn terracotta shades of lipsticks so matte and dry that it hurt to put it on. Ugh. I much prefer now where... well, you have everything! And so in the end: you can truly do you, whatever that may be, weird, vintage, subtle or glowing to the gods. All the stuff is available.
I got one brown and refused to wear it after a bit, lol. Always liked being different. I remember my then bestie madly searching for pure brown lipstick without any red or orange tint to it😬😄.
This Video was amazing! Please make a series out of it, i enjoyed ist so much 😊 historical facts mixed with your personality and talking, there is not much left can ask for :D
Even if the changes in the early-mid 1900s were technically subtle, it reflects a HUGE difference in the final silhouette and shape of the makeup! You can look at a made-up face and still feel pretty confident about guessing which decade the picture was taken just by the lips. Thank you for highlighting these subtle differences~ I remember how I used to wear a bold, neutral-toned red in that Audrey Hepburn style, with the smiling upper lip, back when I still looked feminine. Might revisit that look someday :)
this was so informational! I think my favorite decades have to be the 60s, 70s, and 90s for lip colors and products! I think it's because I just prefer nude/natural colors more than reds on myself.
Love this video!! And love that you mentioned how much of a trend big matte lips were in the 2010s, as opposed to just everything goes. Would love a version about eye makeup or even blusher!
This video is one of the most informational and fun one I have seen in a while. This topic was certainly a surprise but a pleasant one. Thank you so much for sharing. Love you and love your channel. PS : You look gorgeous in red lipstick.
Yeah, the more subtle looks are better looking, to me. But then again, I more into eye make-up than lips. I always thought women look older with darker shades, and more youthful and natural with lighter or pinkier colors.
I love the picture at 4:13 , historical identical twin of the actress that plays Peggy Olson on Mad Men, I've had on my 'to draw folder' for so long, striking expression (whispers to you to copy her style). I love how you applied the lipstick with the brush for the 20's , it looked so perfect. Oh 2000's I do not miss your days of hair flying with the wind and getting stuck to the lip thanks to the gloss, that awful feeling of pulling the hair away and it sticking together...shudder
I really liked this. I don't even wear much makeup, but your channel is always so interesting and you're such a good presenter. Bit of a weird compliment, but your videos go well with a nice cup of tea and a rainy day. I'm learning, but in a relaxing, very de-stressing way. Thank you for that! Seconding what someone else said about a video similar to this, but for eye makeup. Also, idk how doable this would be for you, especially since you wouldn't be able to model it, but would you ever consider doing a video on the history of men wearing makeup and how attitudes towards it have varied?
I'd love a series of these! When my mentor was dying, she told me she was so proud that I was coming out of my shell and becoming more confident. "Always be the girl in the red lipstick," she told me, beaming at me. I'm chronically ill, and I often have to get out on days where really... just standing up feels like a mistake. I always wera bright red lipstick on those days. It's like my battle armor, my flag and my shield. It's like saying, "I don't feel like doing this. But since I am, you better bring it, because I know *I AM."* It's why red was my favorite color for a while, why my first car was red. Fake it til you make it, right?
A Gloss and lipstick combo was popularized in the 50s. You can see such looks on Marilyn Monroe in “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes”. Orange and brilliant pinks were common in this decade. The frosted look, where white pigment is added to lipstick (making colors like baby pink) came in the 60s. Sheer lip glosses came in the 70s. As did Earthy tones like “nudes” and browns. Then in the 80s came the glitter explosion! The finishes ranged from satin to shimmer to gloss. Blue and purple entered the color spectrum, as did black!
This was a nice review! It would be interesting to see the same thing on brows! Since I was 13 in 1979, I have vivid memories of many of these styles. The dark liner of the late 90s was horrible... I never did that, always hated it from the beginning. Same with the recently seen overdrawn raft lips and dark blocky HUGE brows. Or that trend of drawing some upright hairs at the inner ends of the eyebrows, and brushing all the other hairs straight up... people look somehow so scared with that! 🤣 One thing is for sure: always will be something new out there, and I like that nowadays it does not really matter whether or not one is spot on with what is currently the hype. Browse the decades, and pick what you love most!
Love your videos and your historical take on beauti trends, fashion and so on 😄 you are the only "beauti-guru" I follow, and thats because i like the historical and vintage ankel and I love that you are down to earth ☺️ Thanks for great content 💛💛💛
I love this video idea!!! It’s great to see all the decades one right after the other. I’m sure I’m not the first to suggest this, but would you consider making this into a series? Complexion, eyeshadow & lashes, eyebrows... You would do awesome!
Its so interesting how trends ebb and flow. wonder if there will be a definable trend in the future since we are all more accepting of peoples individuality these days? love wearing lipsticks of all colors, havent been wearing any lately since I wear a mask to work and that would be a mess!
What a great video. So interesting. I've always loved lipstick and was Googling the history of lipstick and your video came up. Great video, thank you!
Another amazing beauty video! I personally love the 70s natural bronze looks but also love the 20s small lips 😂 cant decide! Thanks Lucy for making me want to do my face up in makeup xx
On the rise in popularity of lipgloss in the 70s, we were talking about school discos the other night and I was saying I have a very vivid memory of a cola flavoured lipgloss I used to wear to them, and it reminded my Mum of a story from her youth. As lipgloss got popular in the 70s, my Mum and Auntie started wearing it when they would go to discos/dances, and every time, without fail, my Granny would go "What have you got on your lips? You look like you've been eating a greasy chop!"
I love your channel so much, I cannot wait to see you hit 1 mil. I think your channel deserves so much. You do a fantastic job and have the best personality for the kinds of videos you create. I just love it! 💜✨
My favourite product is rouge/blush, it completely transforms my face. I am very pale (mac nw10 is a little dark for me) and blusher instantly makes me look alive. I don't care much for lipstick though.
My mother in law joined the Air Force in the early 60s, right out of high school. She had never worn much makeup at that time. She actually got reprimanded by a supervisor for not wearing lipstick which was considered part of her uniform.
I really liked this video!! You could do another one with different trends if you like, this one was very informative! There were many things I didn't know (even if they were pretty much self-explainatory). A part of me had always wondered why they used so much lipstick during WWII. Again, a great video!
What an enjoyable video! I got an amazing new red liquid lipstick for my vintage looks right before the pandemic, but I've not been able to show it off yet because every time I go out I've got a mask on!
I don't remember lip liner in the nineties, but I hung out with sort of the grunge/punk-hippie types. I would always just wear dark lipstick with no liner, I still do. Lol No blush, lots of eye liner or no eye liner. Gosh I miss those days. Love your channel. :)
My mum was a teen and early 20s in the 70s, and according to HER, lipstick was so colourful. Metallic golds and coppers, bright oranges and yellows, glitter lips, foil lips... She had me at 24, but she used to go out all the time before me. I was made in the 80s. It was the era of disco. As a person made in the 80s, my youth was spent in the 90s, so I remember the goth look and grunge of the early 90s being the dark black, purple, blue, and then fading to the late 90s "mud mouth" of a lot of nude taupe and beige.
Great interesting video and very good speech! Thanks for that 😘 I kept watching although I never wear lipstick as I haven't found shade that suits me. Too many choices to choose from these days! 💄
Very interesting video - now I feel even more like a 1900-1910-Lady. Since I usually don't wear make-up in daily life, when I put some on, it has to be very subtle and natural, everything else just looks wrong :D I feel like it's going to be a "do as you please" time but people go with their own shapes more. In my area you can see totally over done make-up on women or the kind who wear the littlest amount possible. At least in daytime I never saw any in between...
I have always been a 'natural bare look' kind of girl because I have allergies to some cosmetic ingredients. Today I use a new brand of vegan makeup items that won't harm my skin. But seriously this is a fantastic video, very well detailed. I hope you make more videos like this. Thank you Lucy. 🙂
Well, I don't use makeup anyway but I just wanted to see see this... Because.... uh.... I like history! (Wow, I watched this the day it was posted! I've never done that before)
I think I pressed record twice when filming the 70s demo, all I have is footage of me removing the lipstick 🤦🏻♀️ I did a really nice nude + gold combo but yeah, no video of it 😭
My favorite lipstick style is none. lol I have never liked the way lipstick feels. I will put on some tinted chapstick and call it a day. lol But I also just don't wear make up. It's a rare occasion when I do and I just feel annoyed with it on.
I'm not sure how much of it is fact and how much is just fancy storytelling, but I remember hearing somewhere that Hitler apparently hated red lipstick (or lipstick in general? not sure), so women in the 40s considered it part of their patriotic duty to wear it. I have 0 sources for this, so if it's inaccurate, I apologize. Edit: It was bugging me, so I tracked down the source. ua-cam.com/video/ANCYJCkGCBY/v-deo.html
2020s the decade where nobody wears lipstick because you can’t see if through the mask. 😂
My nephew asked me why I am not wearing lipsticks anymore. Told him it was not worth it because no kne would see it and it would transfer to the mask. Oh my god don’t say that. If corona lasts the whole decade...I can’t even think about it oof
@@sisuguillam5109 Well he is old enough to know about the hassle we women go through with our lipsticks 😋
@@annahill99 Don't worry, we'll likely have several vaccines to choose from within a year or so. Then we'll only have to worry about anti vaxxers

Yessss!!
Not just eyeshadows but all eye looks, in general - brows, liners, lashes, etc.

Overdrawing the lower lip to look "pouty" was popular in the 80s, too.
I was going to comment the same. In 86 & 87 I worked at Merle Norman Studios. Thick dark brown liner with a pale sparkly neutral lipstick was popular.
Hmm, didn't know that. I thought for sure it was a 90s thing. Interesting.
for the eighties, we always feel like pink was the most used colour, but you'd be surprised at the amount of red lipstick that was used
Lots of browns as well!
Alongside purple eyeshadow! Haha

I feel like it's going to be a "do as you please" time but people go with their own shapes more.
I have seen alot more metallic lip colors in stores and I kinda wanna try a metallic green 🤔😙💚
Very interesting! I really enjoyed this! ❤️
What a great video! Love getting nerdy with makeup
Oh I’m so so excited for this!!!! ❤️
Excellent lesson!
Congrats on 800k!
Excellent informative vidéo.
BEAUTIFUL lady!
Well, I don't use makeup anyway but I just wanted to see see this... Because.... uh.... I like history!
(Wow, I watched this the day it was posted! I've never done that before)
Interesting fact: Adolf Hitler hated red lipstick, so it was the patriotic duty of every American woman to wear red lips.
Loved the video! Kinda sad you didn't give us a 70s demo, bc I really like the makeup and fashion from that decade
Yes I used to wear a lot of lip gloss in high school 😂
I recommend the Breakfast at Tiffanys Audrey lipstick Pink in the Afternoon by revlon, its sooo pretty
I loved this - very interesting!
