Excessive Slip Angle

- I probably should have added this description sooner, but here goes:
This is Watkins Glen and this is real life, not a video game. Video and data recorded using an AiM MXL dash and AiM SCHD camera. Unfortunately, I had issues getting the brake indicator to work properly so it never looks like a brake.
Car is a 2007 Cayman S built to Porsche Club of America (PCA) Spec Cayman class. Beyond all safety gear required (roll cage, fire system, race seat, harnesses, etc.) there is not a lot that can be done to the car - a specific suspension package all cars in the class use and some extra cooling for the motor and trans is about all that is allowed. No performance modifications to the motor are allowed - it is stock with the exception of ARP rod bolts and the cylinders are sleeved as this motor had bore scoring originally.
great job making sure the car and the barrier didnt become intimate partners
Avoiding the blue bushes is highly recommended.
🤣🤣
but it was his mistake in the first place. righting it was obligatory
@@raoulduke8720 Really? And you just HAD to write this into multiple comments too? You're lame
@@raoulduke8720 It's quite strange, I can't seem to find any videos of how Raoul would handle seen vehicle dynamic issues, or anything related to motorsports whatsoever on your channel.
Incredible save man, it takes some real skill to save a mid engined car with no traction in a banking curve.
That’s a mid-engine Cayman, but you are still quite correct!
smh, he's the one who made the mistake in the first place, if he was really skilled he wouldn't have slipped up in the first place
@@raoulduke8720 have u ever driven a mid engined car in a track? Do you even know how tyre slip works? Dude every driver makes mistakes, literally everyone, even lewis hamilton, even max verstappen, even fernando alonso, even schumacher. Its so stupid to say that his awesome save isnt relevant just bc hes the one to make a mistake in the first place. Get a road license, kid.
@@raoulduke8720 Nobody is 100% perfect. Besides, there are track conditions, tire conditions, pushing the car to its limits and beyond - all this in the heat of a race. Far better to have the knowledge and skills to save the car from spinning out. I have an old in-car video of Derek Bell driving a Porsche 956 at up to 220mph on the old Nürbergring Nordschliefe - it’s impressive to watch him catch the car numerous times as it starts to swing out.
@No Nope if he can even afford it
The only man in history to save a spin in a Porsche
Ah yes the good ole decelerate right on the apex , that guy knew you were gonna have a run on him . Technically he did nothing wrong under the marshals eyes but people like that need to be talked to off track for a reality check
Agreed, he did nothing wrong just caught me out. I tend to give people a little benefit of the doubt and hope he did not do that on purpose and, instead, that is just how he takes that corner in his comfort zone.
@@johncollier2628 that’s a very mature way to go about , I’m not saying I’m gonna go threaten someone that didn’t drive the way I wanted them to but I’ll be sure I get an explanation 😅
@@4zap7 Take a look at my Road Atlanta Enduro video - skip to the end. A guy looses it, spins and I t-bone him. He came over after the race, apologized, took ownership/accountability and we talked for awhile. He was a class act - that was mature and he had his son along to show how you handle things when you screw up. I was seriously impressed.
@@johncollier2628 I’ll be sure to check it out , I think a lot of people underestimate how many good , humble people there are out there. Myself included from time to time
@@johncollier2628 holy shit what a scary part of the track to be crashed out at that was at road Atlanta !
As soon as you lifted the throttle completely the rear said "LOL no". Amazing save mate.
At 1:23 all i could hear was "DEJA VU"
🤣
That’s the balance of the mid/rear engine, smooth throttle control is key. They suffer from lift off over steer like a front wheel drive, which takes higher than average skill to control. Very unique handling cars are Porsche, very good but very strange compared to other “sports” cars.
That doesn't look like a normal braking point for the car ahead...
Indeed, it definitely caught me off-guard.
@@johncollier2628 You are clearly faster, if its not a race then you are responsible to keep some distance etc because the other driver clearly had less experience or maybe track knowledge but the point is he was not as good and you caught him in almost every corner.
Good job not panicking and hitting hitting the brakes with that rear engine shenanigans.
it's a common occurrence and almost unavoidable in some cases but this could have been avoided with a bit of distance as the other driver definitely lost focus through that turn.
Goodluck with future track days and really happy nothing happened and love that you just got straight back on it like it's just another day 😁 the sign a true driver!
@@pieterjordaan3989, “Fernando is faster than you.”.
That was very suspect…
@@pieterjordaan3989 not necessarily. If it's not a race I would completely defer to the faster car.
Pushing limits against a more powerfull car, excellent save.
Against a dumby who brakes randomly in the wide sweeping turn at W. Glen..
Buenas Fercho!
@@colbyjwise He always brakes before taking a bite of his sandwich. Not random at all.
Took me a bit to realize whether or not this was a video game on my dim screen
if this happened on iRacing there is a 0% chance you are saving this
fucking iRacing man shits even harder than real life. they gotta chill, it aint impossible to recover from oversteer.
Because it's premium realism. It took them up to 2020 to make the tyres actually grip better after being heated up.
Lol not a chance. The track is damn accurate though. I immediately knew where this was just from playing iRacing.
That's because iRacing tire model is hot trash and shouldn't be held as close to realistic. Fanboys will fanboy but the fact that this isn't saveable in iRacing speaks volumes about it.
I blame that stupid "grip = arcade" mindset of most sim racing elitists.
An abrupt lift into a high speed corner, that’ll do it alright
Classic lift off oversteer
CORRECTION: Car ahead hitting brakes into a high speed corner, causing the abrupt lift, and aftermath. Great save nonetheless. I'd go and find that guy after the session.
@@jimmijojo abrupt lift is abrupt lift lol, the car in front didn't hit the brakes until camera car was sideways anyway
@@dannyDC2 he was already coming in too fast towards him tho before he hit the brakes. He had to do that
@@dannyDC2 yeah but he did decelerate too much and stayed on the racing line causing the lift... it seemed almost tactical so that defender could create space and focus on attack. I dont know the track but didnt seem like defended needed to cut speed to corner or prep for next turn in.
Lol that 997 is so loud ❤... this car was just mad at him 🤣 that happened outta nowhere
Guy in the 996 must've been the most relaxed person on Earth after seeing you dropped away from his tail AND recovered safely.
I would call this, "Nice save dude".
Great save ! It’s very hard to apply the right amount of counter steer, you are a worthy driver !
Looks like great fun in the Porsche. This has been on my recommended videos all day, finally got to watch it now. We all know what caused that to happen but at least no barriers were contacted!
🗿
The sound those slicks make during oversteer is brutal - nothing like road tyres.
lift-off oversteer is the worst man, especially when the guy in front of you does it to you deliberately (Looks to be at least).
Just noticed it. You must be a racer or some to notcie that detail
@@anandhapadmanabanm2980 looks pretty blatant to me
@@anandhapadmanabanm2980 No it’s pretty clear that the guy in grey Porsche is a rookie and should have pulled in to let the faster car by. If he looked in his mirror he would have seen that he’s holding him up every corner
@@chrisarmstrong9434 Why would he let the other driver go? As I understand, it's a competition, not a track day
@@IgorBagayev Even in a competition he should let him by as to not cause an accident, the guy who nearly spun out had to lift off 3 times in this clip so that he doesn’t go into the back of him. Most experienced drivers would swallow their pride if they see someone on their bumper going through corners. All he has to do is lift off the throttle for one second and then everyone goes home without any drama.
I honestly thought you were gonna loose it when she came back. That tank slapper was quick.
Well done mate
Is that Watkins Glen? 🤔
That was a sweet save, holy shiznit! Pushing 1.3g in corner isn't a walk in the park. Stay safe out there!
Yes, Watkins Glen. One of the great tracks, but not a lot of room for error...
Wow he didn't step on the brakes, just lift his foot off the throttle
The algorithm strikes again! That was a proper impressive save and an all round good drive.
in video games all I need to do is press a little button to counter steer. In real life I would never be able to react that fast in that situation going at that kind of speed with a helmet squzing my face and my glasses together while im sweating like a pig and nervous like a teenager doing public speech.
Afterwards: “nah man, I totally meant to do that”
More like, who has a clean pair of shorts I can borrow?
@@johncollier2628 yeah, that too lol
That's a black flag. Mid-corner brake checking should be severely punished.
What are you talking about. Everybody mid-corner brakes.
Also very clearly he's already lost it before the car in front brakes.
@@jakubgrygiel9795 He lost it because the car ahead was going way too slow and was forced to suddenly lift and brake. Look at the car in front, he didn't brake through that corner at all
I don't agree with Jakub's reply as braking mid-corner in any corner will unsettle the car. The faster way through T5 (the carousel) is to throttle steer - modulate throttle - to point the nose of the car. This was the first time I caught him in this corner so maybe he does that every time. Not a very good way to take that corner but maybe that is his comfort level. If I were instructing him I would definitely get him out of that habit, though, because as he gains speed and starts to near the limit of grip, that braking could have very disastrous consequences.
@@johncollier2628 UA-cam algorithm has decided its your time to shine!
The driver > car theory really goes well here when that Cayman overtakes the 911 and proceeds to extend the gap
The cayman is a very capable car. Do not underestimate a lighter, Better balanced car just because of public stigma 😜
"You lost traction"
"No, it was just excessive slip angle"
Is this real racing or some video game?
@@anmol9886 I think it's Mario Kart 🤔
@@luisperedah No, man, it's Hello Kitty Kruisers
Excessive slip angle makes you understeer, not oversteer. Cornering force reaches a peak with a certain slip angle and falls off past that.
1:23
Thanks. I don't understand why the video is so long
@@UltimateKyurem welcome
@@UltimateKyurem the old Wasworth Constant

Excessive slip angle... I'm not seeing it... Does he mean one of the cars in front of him?... No, they look fine....
What does he mean by excessive slip angle?... Good speed coming off the turn though... That just made a window for a pass...
Oh, and the window shut... Still not seeing the slip angle... Oh, and he has the speed coming off the turn again ... Gaining... going for the pass, and WOAH Woah woah ok yeah that was some serious slip angle there.
...And a very impressive save.
@d c the only thing better to do would have been to ignore it
@d c exactly what i thought, what a good way of describing yourself
From the looks of the gauges, we've got ourselves an all gas no brake racer. 👊
That 911 in front of you sounded prettay nice.
Watkins Glen is one of my favorite tracks, very tricky
Now that left skidmarks, and I don't mean on the asphalt.
I COULDNT tell if this was real life or not because video games are becoming crazy good
Even I clenched on that one. That brake check was unnecessary. Nice catch. I can only imagine which adjectives were being practiced inside the helmet.
Here before it gets on everyones recommended
yeah dude
The time has come
Fair play and keeping it together! I can imagine a Porsche isn't easy to break out of a slide!
that porsche superior engineering showing their true colors.....
Excessive slip angle is one way to put it. Lol. Great save.
Would pay for that saving skills. Nice to see.
Excessive slip angle, otherwise known as drifting
Wtf is dude braking mid corner?
Hats off to driver for not “collecting “ the dip $#@ braking at the apex. That sir was one helluva save 👍
weeee, my butt tore off and swallowed a part of my seat cushion. Nice save!
wow that looked scary... it was almost like you got brake checked. amazing save and not even that much time loss
and as showed, his esfincter never opened again...
came for the slip angle, stayed for the racing.
1:23 my heart skipped a beat
Damn good save you really handled that perfectly you must have considered the possibility at least to react so calmly
Nice catch! Although in surprised it didn't snap in the other direction.
Man that Porsche screams
Amazing reaction vs control 🎛️
Incredible how you managed to drive without any brakes!
Yeah, yeah, I need to fix that. I always forget until I am watching a video and then it hits me again and again and again...
Lift off oversteer, lifiting cars off of the track since at least the invention of the MR2. Good job catching that otherwise the guard rail would have.
wow!! excelent save, dude.
Not gonna lie, that recovery was sick af! I would’ve lost it lol
Hate when people make that in front of me. Looked like he made you lift-off oversteer
Looked like a deliberate act to me.
@@FairladyS130 yeah, I thought that too. But with me people usually make right before a braking point and argue that they break earlier due to some wearing or different car etc etc. This guy doesn't even have a poor argument, breaking in the middle of the turn... What the hell
@@0Freguenedy0 looks like he was just trying to find the apex, maybe came in a little too hot... or didn't setup the turn correctly and the front wasn't biting.
@@FairladyS130 Was thinking that maybe but the black Cayman in front braked as well, you can see the brake lights for a split second.
You can pin-point the exact moment he leaves skiddies in his jocks
That looked like a real but clincher! Nice save.
Can confirm, car was slipping excessively at an angle.
I need to find that Martini/Grateful Dead livery driver. That is the most amazing trackday vehicle ive ever seen
Great car control around the Glen 👍
so hear me out guys i'm gonna sound crazy but he understeered or more technically the front tyres gained negative slip angle
He was feeding you
looks like the car is super loose, I love watkins. From the video you can see a cresting and the rear end being unsettles with a mute amount of input put the car into the spin. Good job saving it, i'd love to see you in some current footage of watkins.
Funny thing is this was a 100 times better than earlier in the weekend as I added a bunch of rear camber the day before. That said, with the suspension package we are required to run the rear is loose. Just an inherent trait with this chassis.
Totally thought this was a game at first 😅
Great save right there, absolute skill.
Love your driving style man.
Skid marks on the track and in the shorts.
my God, it looks so close to the track in FM7, even the cloudy day and all!
me who never raced a day in my life: OOOOOO HE SLIPPIN
Lift-off oversteer gotta love it.
That was indeed, excessive slip angle.
Good title
almost a racing incident whew
Damn Next Gen graphics do be looking good
I was waiting for Deja Vu to start playing
Nice...! All I can say. Good wheel skill, good recovery!
assetto corsa physics be like: nah, that doesn't look real, I'll do different.
this guy is so talented holy moly
bro went from sliping to sliding real quick
great save!
Watkins Glenn, fantastic track!! It’s where I took my profile pic
Watkins may be my favorite track with Road Atlanta and Mid Ohio right up there as well.
Sbinotto canceled his call.
Best thing I've seen on UA-cam all day ESPN top 10 shit great save man!
Nice save 👍🏻accidental lift off oversteer can be very scary
That's always been a trouble spot at Watkins Glen.
Roasted those tires.
I'm totally speculating but I wonder if there was some lift-off oversteer
Bingo!
"wouldn't that make you...
drift?" *eurobeat plays"
i was waiting for something to happen and then my heart nearly sank to my ankles
It's awesome how accurate the iRacing version of this track is. I already knew all of the braking zones before clicking on this video. Though if it was iRacing he would have been in the wall.
iRacing does an incredible job of mapping every track.
I recognise this track, Watkins Glen International
To me it looks like you let go of the throttle to coast into the right turn at the same time you wanted to change line to the inside and the weight distribution went forward, which threw the back side of the car to the left, amazing catch btw!
This reminds me of mountainbiking.
The first thing I learned was how to fall correctly, because it will happen at some point and you might aswell learn how to minimize injury if you do.
Code brown.
Lift off oversteer picnic
Looks like a blast, would love to drive Watkins
Watkins is probably my favorite track, but there are several close seconds. Will be there in a month, can't wait.
@@johncollier2628 Seeing as you are (roughly) in the area, have you ever gone around Lime Rock? It is easily my favorite track to drive on, especially when the chicanes are taken out.
@@zacharyosvald251 I have never been to Lime Rock. I live in the Chicago area and tow my car to these events. I have been to Mid-Ohio, VIR, Pitt Race, Road Atlanta, Brainerd, Leguna Seca, Mosport, Road America and (of course) Watkins Glen.
