I’m almost 72 and got to watch this stuff when I was young, including JW’s own show. What a quick wit Jonathan Winters was. I used to about break my face laughing. So “out there” for that time. I loved it.
If we (my brother, sister and myself) behaved and got ready for bed, my parents let us stay up late and watch those kinds of shows (assuming it wasn't a school night; not Carlin . Mom thought he was vulgar, but I watch him now). I vaguely remember JW wearing wild costumes on those acts, and it was great! Supposedly (I don't remember this ) people tell me that he was much wilder in his youth. Any suggestions to watch? I'd be interested to know. Thanks
Robin William's idolized him as his mentor. Everytime he spoke about Winters, it should how he respected him as a comedic genius ! Both missed but never forgotten for their impeccable adlib timing.
I meant Johnathan Winters in his and my hometown of Springfield, Ohio when he was in his eighths, I was a waitress at Perkins restaurant and he was hilarious and such a good time. I will never forget him and I have had his autograph ever since. Rip and hope to see you and all your stories you left here with me
I had the wonderful opportunity to meet Jonathan Winters at a Hollywood party back in the late sixties. He was so sweet to me and kissed the back of my hand. It continues to be a treasured memory from that era. What an amazingly talented comedian.
Love Jonathan Winters, and speaking of Marines we Got a great story from Dan Lauria on how sinatra couldnt remember names so he gave eveyone a nickname and his was Jar head
Growing up watching Johnny every night waiting watching all the greats come and go and passed, I always refer to how great they were and feel sorry for the younger generations that can't appreciate incredable talent long live añll the greats
Right, first there are no host that could do this. Second, the audience today that is available at that day-part lacks a frame of reference. Carson was king, Lettermen carried it on a bit, but didn't quite have the interviewing skills, still he was in the ballpark. Today, it's the woke and the dopes. No adult hosts.
I was a fellow Marine ('68-'70) & my favorite uncle was as well. In fact because of the impression my uncle made on me when he was home on leave, I enlisted when the opportunity came to emulate him. Regardless, my uncle Dan & I were bonded by our mutual fascination w/Johnathon Winters. Our dual appreciation of him would leave us in stitches when together, we enjoyed his antics on TV.
"I have a two-acre ranch." Delivered with a straight face and in a nonchalant tone, even this one line when spoken by Jonathan Winters is funnier than about 85% of what has passed as comedy in the last 20 years. I miss this man.
J.W. was--is--my favorite comedian. I don't believe anyone could touch him for his far-out imagination, impeccable timing and cast of crazy characters and voices. He was God's gift to us all.
Oh man this is 24 carat gold. No script, nothing planned, he’s just rolling with the moment....and able to keep a straight face. Jonathan Winters was a priceless, amazingly gifted comedian. So thankful for you tube that I can see this.

One of the half dozen or so true comic geniuses of all-time. His expanse and level of talent both in creativity and performing made him literally incomparable.
In his day he had the informal reputation as the funniest man in America. Don Rickles is the guy I most often re-watch on youtube, but seeing Winters again rather cements the reputation. Other greats have flat spots where they have to transition onto something else and make a graceful recovery, which they always do. JW didn't need that skill. Winters had the knack of making even a non-starter seem funny, and on the other hand if he talks of taping a cat to a tree as though it was the most natural thing in the world, he threatens to have even the SPCA rolling in the aisles.
Thank you for posting this. He is hysterical. To me his comedy is Rated G, but full-on Human Condition. Everything we grew up with in our own lives, but have never mentioned.
August/2021 and I'm laughing my heart out. What an outstanding performance 👏👌 old is gold ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Man they would have been disappointed if they lived in our miserable times!
The incredible Jonathan Winters. I entered upper division college at San Francisco State College (now a University ---yeehaw) in 1961, and bought a couple of 33 rpm records of him, not knowing who he was at the time. Was I surprised. The man was amazing at that time, and continued to be. God Bless him.

I actually remember watching this when it first aired. I was 13 and used to sneak back out of my room to the downstairs den and turn the tv on low. He was my absolute favorite guest, even though I do not own a chicken, errrr I mean even though I was so young I still loved his humor and could appreciate how good he was.
Jonathan Winters was so funny. I had the opportunity to attend one of his shows many moons ago. I cried…he was sooooo hysterical. He did Maude Frickert. He was a sight to behold 😂🤣
I was in an LA supermarket decades ago & there was a good size Senior woman in the back of me who looked identical to Winter's Maude Frickert character & I wanted to say something in 'Winter's 'Frickert voice but held My tongue
I have watched this and other videos many times over, and still laugh hard! JW was a comedic genius! I've read so many stories of him holding court anywhere he goes, and people lifted by his humor! Even Robin Williams looked up to this man! Irreplaceable!
When he was 'on', he was really 'on'. I'm still looking for an appearance on this show from the early 70s. He was especially hilarious. We had relatives over at the time and were all tearing up from laughing so hard.
Oh, how I disagree!! This man is head and heels above any living or dead comedian...period! No one can touch that lightning -speed comic genius of a mind...God I miss him...and Johnny.
Jonathan Winters had to be full of something to come up with all of that, seriously funny stuff, in any turn of a conversation. I wish I had half of that capacity. You could see his mind working, behind the facial expressions. He was truly one of a kind. He and Robin Williams, together, Indescribable.
Interesting how similar they are in age. In reality, Johnny Carson was only 19 days older than Jonathan Winters. They were both born in the fall of 1925. Winters outlived Carson by over eight years and died in April 2013 at the age of 87. Johnny lived to be 79.
My favorite was when Jonathon Winters and Robin Williams were on together. The old generation handing off the torch to the next. Two of the greatest improvisational geniuses ever!
This is possibly my favorite interview. The only complaint I have is that it ended too soon. I'm sort of a cult follower of Mr. Winters. Like a sponge absorbing anything, I can find concerning him and this has been going on for many years. My reason for bringing this up is to substantiate the first sentence of this comment. Not faint praise. RIP Cheers
I have watched about 5 of these and laughed through each one. He has an amazing sense of humor and so quick!
Jonathan Winters made Johnny Cason laugh harder then any other comedian he had on his show.
I’m almost 72 and got to watch this stuff when I was young, including JW’s own show. What a quick wit Jonathan Winters was. I used to about break my face laughing. So “out there” for that time. I loved it.
Didn't Jonathan Winters do a lot of variety shows in the 1960s and 1970s?

Yes Johnny lights up when Johnathan comes on stage
I think he loved Winters and Jack Benny.
Two icons that will not be replaced
The one, the only, Johnathan Winters! I miss him!

Robin Williams and Buddy hacket on that list too.

He was one of Robin William’s biggest influences...
Great comedians. So much better than what passes for comedy today.
Mel Blanc.. Buster Keaton. ..Ernie Kovacs.. ..possibly Mel Brooks..

I’m just discovering this guy now, how’s that possible his comedic timing is supernatural
You really missed it, but I wish I was your age
OMG, he had such a quick wit. He was my favorite comedian growing up. What a genius. God bless him.❤️
He was my favorite growing up and still is to this day. His speed and inventiveness remain unmatched.
Comedic genius beyond comparison! Nobody alive today can even come close
Jim Gafagan I think comes close. Very funny, original and with many voice inflections.
There is a lot of truth in his humor.
I’m glad you said that. You’re right.
