  • The larger master cylinder helped to decrease pedal travel and improve feel and response.
Here is a good aftermarket alternative to the OEM master

Hi there great video have a 2013 subaru forester xt 2.0 turbo in Australia RHD poor brakes no leaks new rotors new pads poor brake pedal possible booster or brake cylinder issue im not confident doing a change over the upgrades probably expensive new too

A new sti master cylinder isn't an expensive part but you need to be sure you find one that fits and works with your year. Replacing certain parts on newer (roughly 2007 and newer) Subaru's could affect the VDC systems.

Thanks, I haven't had any issue with the brake booster so I haven't had to replace it.

Can you do the same kind of upgrade for an 05 Forester 2.5 xs? If so what STI master cylinder should I be looking for?

    • @DIYEVERYTHING
      @DIYEVERYTHING  4 місяці тому

You can, using any 03 to 08 STI master cylinder.

So you push the brake pedal down until it becomes hard solid? And can’t press any more? So no bleeding the brakes? Then you remove the master cylinder? While there’s still brake fluid in the master cylinder? Did you leave the brake fluid in the STI master cylinder while bench bleeding it, or did you tip it out and pour in new brake fluid? And do you bleed the brakes after installation?

With old/ worn pads you are pushing most of the fluid into the caliper. Bench bleed the new master and leave the fluid in. Once installed you can push all the caliper pistons in and that will push any trapped air out of the system. If you're still concerned about air, bleed the whole system.

I believe my master cylinder is bad. Oreillys has 05 sti master cylinder for 104 and some change and a forester for 130 and change.
    I haven't upgraded my brakes.
Would i have to modify anything to use the STI?

You won't have to modify anything, the only difference is that the STI has a larger piston that moves more fluid giving you a firmer, more responsive pedal. Be sure it's a true STI master cylinder, check that it's marked 1 1/16 and not just 1.

I assume your Forester is a 5 speed? I'm looking for a video to show how to adapt this master cylinder for an auto.

Mine is an auto, very easy upgrade.

@@DIYEVERYTHING What year is yours? My Mom has an 07 with VDC and I've read that the brake lines have to be modified on an automatic for 07-08.

Mine is an 06 so I'm not sure about the 07,08.

Hello I have two questions for you I too would like to upgrade my '07 Forester XT sport but the problem that I have would be my master cylinder is different then yours how would I resolve this my master has both lines on one side and a share that protrudes out the back about an inch and a half okay that's question one question two is I have a master cylinder problem the cylinder is discontinued at the dealer. This cold Started From Me replacing a rear caliper have to go all over to find one and then that time I believe it ran low on brake fluid. I bled the system from the farthest Calibre to the closest caliper that works until I started the car so I thought it was paid internal leak on the master. I found 1 2 hours away and installed still no breaks when the engine running the pedal goes to the floor turn the car and pump the pedal its good until i start the car again.. Help help

Sounds like you got air in the abs unit. If you're lucky you can bleed it out but you may need to take it to the dealership or a garage that can hook up a diagnostic tool that force bleeds the abs units. Basically making it actuate and push the air out.

I have an 01 forester and I’m about to do the ctsv brembo kit for the front and 06/07 wrx 2 pots for the rear. Do you know if an STI or wrx master cylinder is a direct fit?

I am not that familiar with the SF forester so I can't say for certain. In a situation like this, or any time I want to explore options, I go to a junkyard. If you can find an SG (03-08) Forester and an SF (your body style) Forester, then try swapping master cylinders there. If it doesn't work, at least you didn't do any damage.

Why not give the single booster and master combo from the svx ;-)

Because this was easier to find and a lot less money.
