Well, I have a 2012, 4 cylinder (THIS CAR), and CR states they tend to suck oil. It depends on the engine a lot. That said, MY car is running well, but one car cannot set the example for all others. This is an "old" car now.
I bought my wife a 2000 legacy 10. Years ago. She has 260,000. Only normal maintenance. She loves it
I own a 2003 Subaru forester with 200,000 miles and still runs great.

They're still great cars like Toyotas you just have to replace the head gaskets if theyre from the 2000s which you can learn to do urself
265 000 miles on my 98 Legacy STW. 2.5 AT. No problems, just maintance. Great car.
Have a 2019 Forester. Bought it new. Nearly 100,000 miles. Zero issues. I change engine oil and filter every 5,000 miles. Burns no oil. Averages 30 mpg. I'm really happy with it, although I wanted an RAV4, but my wife preferred the Forester.

Hey Scotty, people often neglect to change the pcv valve on these Subarus causing most of the oil leaks. Change that thing every 60k miles they’re cheap and easy to do.
Easy enough to find the PCV and clean it,.... DIY.

I've owned both a Subaru and Mazda, and both were solid and made it well past 100k. I've owned even more Toyotas, but now that Toyota (and Honda) are pricing themselves as premium brands, those days are probably over. Also very happy with my V6 Frontier that I now have (because Tacoma prices went into geo-stationary orbit). Thanks Scotty.
My 2018 2.7 Tacoma access was $ 28,500. plus tax. In American bucks it was about $ 22,500. EXPENSIVE !!
I only have 40 Kilometres or 25,000 miles and it's worth 45,000 now because of inflation and because it's not a crappy GM or Hyundai fire truck. lol
If you marry a cheap easy girl it will cost you half a house when she bangs the neighbours. lol
We drove our 2011 outback 11 years and 255,000…engine was great! Our current 2018 crosstrek has 148,000km…been flawless. Our 2022 forester I expect to be just as reliable.
On our third Subaru Forester. Had an ignition coil go, and it took out both catalytic converters. Subaru replaced both free of charge. Had an air conditioning hose leak cost a few hundred to replace. No other problems. Loyal to Subaru!
Subaru doesn't use silicone to seal the engine components instead of gaskets, they use RTV. RTV's life expectancy is about 40 years. It's fine. The important thing is to do your regular maintenance and change the oil and filter regularly (like 5,000 miles). Also, change the CVT and diff fluids every 5 years or 60,000 miles. That will also help prevent issues with the CVT (if equipped).

@@Mach141 it's not "regular" silicone though, in the way people talk about it. It's use as a gasket is actually common.
I’m a Subaru technician, the newer boxers are completely junk. I’ve had to pull the engine on a wilderness forester with 12k miles to reseal the cam carriers
I got an 06 sti with 183k miles and still runs like a champ, been seeing the talk on subarus being bad for years now but no issues owning mine since 2016. Wonder if it is something about the newer ones

Now heard rod knocks at 45mph- within couple minutes, stopped accelerating. All lights turned back off that were on dash after car was pushed in neutral- then only red oil lamp symbol stayed
I do have 2015 Subaru Forester with 194k miles. Running good still.

Some Toyota four cylinder motors had a problem with oil burning years ago
2010 forester 208000 miles all original parts. Works smooth. Also heated seats means heated windshield wiper melt pads
My 2016 Forester is serving me well so far. Gets pretty good gas mileage as well.

Here in England the 6 cyl boxers are reckoned to be the best of the lot, certainly my experience, chain drive on the 6 pot too.
Our 2.5 turbo Forester runs great, still looks new at 15 years.
Subarus need decent maintenance or they will give trouble, its neglected cars that go wrong, spark plugs are horrible to change but normal maintenance is easy, how many other cars still have 3 dipsticks under the bonnet, engine gearbox and front diff.
Our Forester even has its own spin on oil filter for the auto gearbox, no need to take the sump off, just refit a new oil filter same as you would doing an engine oil change.
The downside to them is they arn't good on fuel, but nothing grips or drives like a Subaru, try keeping up with one on wet twisty roads, can't have everything.
Thats not true about the H6. I have a 07 legacy H6 and NEVER had a problem with that engine. I'm at 204thousand and no issues.
I think a big factor is the person who owns the car and how they treat it. Even a Honda or Toyota engine will blow up before 100k miles if it's abused/not maintained.
@@beastakip1777 very true. And because of neglect by subaru owners they get a bad rep.
The engines themselves are alright, it's the poor cooling due to the small engine bay that causes issues. People that drive carefully tend to do much better with them, but you really never know how well a car has been maintained when you buy used.

Most people I know have had very good luck with Subaru.
my stability control actually worked quite well in a snow storm when trying to get off an exit full of snow.
I would think Subaru is still better than Mitsubishi or Nissan... awhile back Scotty said highly of the CrossTrek and Outback...

Hey Scooty, I have a 2004 sti with 189,000miles still original engine, no oil leaks and no oil burning at all.

Other channels clearly tell, it's STRICTLY only the EJ25 = 2.5l engines having the gasket problems, but none of the myriads of EJ20/2.0l (or even smaller ones).
I've owned a 2012 Impreza with well over 100,000 miles and have never had one problem. A great little car and it has the best all wheel drive system made.
My Subaru and all the Subaru I had ran great . If you have any car over 100.000 miles you it should be payed off. And you are crazy to keep them .
I am on my second Sub Forester. First one was a 2012 I put 165,000 miles on it it used a quart of oil every 1,500 miles. I now have a 2022 with 15,000 mile not problems at the moment. I like the all wheel drive in it because off the area were I live. I believe my next vehicle will be a Corolla hatch back, better fuel economy.
I have a 15 Forester I've had since new and have 135,000 miles on it with few problems. The 2.5 engine uses about 1/3 qt/5,000 miles between changes. So, no reason to be afraid of Subaru engines.

The latest advice from Scotty that I followed, was to replace my brakes with Akenono ceramic pads and high carbon rotors. Braking in my Camry never feltr felt better! Thank you Scotty..
Scotty, this is the FB Engine with the same RVT gaskets on the cam carriers. You can tell because of the top mounted filter
I bought a 2017 Impreza brand new.... my first and LAST Subaru! All-Wheel drive was the best ever.... but I had 7 recalls, the rear brakes got messed up and wore the rotor down so they gave me new pads and resurfaced the rotor under warranty. The infotainment system never worked that good. Rust bubbles in the black paint after only 2 years, heat shield rotted away and rattled... coolant was below the low line and the dealer gave me trouble when I asked them to fill it up. The cvt transmission never felt right... you could feel it skip and jerk even when I had cruise control on. And the final straw was when I was driving on the freeway and went to pass someone and when I slowed down the engine made a loud knock/ticking sound and that never went away. I only had 52,000 miles on it so the engine was still under warranty.... but at that point I was done and traded it in for a different brand. Never again Subaru!!!
Bought a 2.5 non-turbo Impreza brand new back in 2006. Multiple head gasket replacements--along with other issues--some years later have turned me off to Subaru forever.
It's a shame you had to go through all that, but you have real world experience to back up your decision. I'm the same way with Jeep products. Never a-fucking-gain.
I have a friend who owns a repair shop and no kidding, every time I visit him there is always a subaru with some kind of major mechanical failure.

I owned a 2006 manual transmission Subaru Forester before I got my Toyota solara 5mt. I had to replace wheel bearings at 150k miles. My 2002 Sequoia 4wd is perfect at 253k miles. So, there's that.

Earlier this year I spent $8,600 at a dealer to get various things repaired or replace for my 2009 Outback. I know my car isn't worth that much in good condition but I wanted to give it one last chance. Unfortunately, even though I asked them to fix whatever was wrong with the engine, it was running just as badly as when I brought it in and it is getting a lot worse so that really screws me.

Talk with the manager. They definitely didn't do all the work you guy's agreed upon.
And, this is Subaru's fault? You were HAD, dude, and ANY DEALERSHIP can potentially do that to you if you let them. And, if your Outback was in decent condition, your car was worth more than what you think.
SUV's are station wagons, the name change is for marketing purposes.
That K series in that CRV is bulletproof. Not like the Honda 1.5l turbo series these days.
I have a 2019 Nissan Rogue SV 2.5L 4cyl AWD.
After doing 80-85 on the GSP, I get roughly 29mpg when rated for 32.
I prefer AWD simply because I drive in certain conditions better than FWD. My opinion.

My mum had a 1995 Subaru Forester for 35 years until it started having multiple issues, even though it spent a few expensive visits to the repair shop. Car died when my mum died in the 35th year.

My stepdad's head gasket in his outback blew, I can't remember the milage, but they are known for doing that, those boxer engines.
Just the 2.5 non turbo for certain years. The 2.0, 3.0 and 3.6 along with the turbo 2.5 were all fine

@@mplslawnguy3389 well you could realistically argue that head gaskets blow on any vehicle. Besides the n/a 2.5s because of using graphite head gaskets instead of the MLS head gaskets used on the turbo version, none of the other variants of the Subaru boxer blew head gaskets any more frequently than other engines.
@@andrewdalvet6871 I know someone that just bought a newer one that blew a head gasket in the first week, then when they dug deeper, the whole engine was bricked. That's a real world experience, so I'm taking stock in that.

I got 179k miles out of my 2007 Subaru Legacy but I did have to replace the head gaskets before 100k and they were leaking pretty badly again. Anyway, I just traded it in on a '23 Mazda 3 Premium AWD sedan. It's a nice upgrade!

i was talking to guy who was looking at my neighbors house for sale and he was driving an old subara with in excess of 274,000 miles on it. everybody was telling him to get rid of it, but he had no intention of getting rid of that car as it still runs and drives great.of
Smart fellow. There's two very old Outbacks in our neighborhood, both way over 200k, and the owners are happy with them.
The only people that buy a Subaru are the ones who can’t afford a Toyota.

Pfft, I replaced my camry and sw20 with a Forester and have never regretted it. So much more vehicle than both of them combined.
Iv known many of those engines do 200K plus without issues, but they are not forgiving with abuse. Toyota on the other hand are bullet proof and you really need to drive them hard without oil and coolant for them to go south. Honda just lost being up there for burning out engines due to bad manufacture with the new recall of 250K vehicles.
2014 Forester was crap. Subaru did not stand behind that one. CVT was crap. Head gasket crap. Burned oil like crazy.
I have a 2018 I bought because I heard “avoid the earlier years of the SJ because CVT failures and Oil Consumption.” I figured, well I’ll just go to the last year. Only have 50k miles but the only issue I’ve had was a loose rattling heat shield over the exhaust manifold which is almost an inevitability of 2.5i Subarus. Oil consumption is fine, same as when it was new, and the CVT has been no issue.

I bought a brand new 2013 Forester that burned a quart of oil every 1500 miles. Dropped it like a hot potato after a year of owning it. Never again.

120,000 miles on my 16 wrx, I drive it like I stoled it, never even changed the oil, runs great😂
Grandsons subaru leaked so much oil it was well oil sprayed the body was perfect when he sold it to a mechanic who put another motor in it

Subaru still makes a compelling value play here in the Northeast. Need a safe all weather roomy vehicle to haul 2 kids and a dog around town and up to the mountain's cant beat Forester for 28k with heated seats and AWD.

I'm not a mechanic. I just think stuff that is simple is harder to break and last longer, easier to fix. So I just want a 2wd.
Subaru AWD is flawless. Never had any issue in my 30 years of experience. Extremely reliable system, even if under heavy winter load in my case.
the last thing youll need to worry about is AWD for Subaru they perfected it over 60 years
yeah the driveline is really really solid in Subaru. Driveline and transmission (6 speed STI) both top notch. It's the engine (and usually specific years) that are less reliable, or susceptible to bad treatment. But even the EJ20 / 2 litre is very reliable. End of the day Subaru are still usually in top 10 for reliability rankings.
Always buy Honda or Toyota then.
Had a 2003 outback 380 000km and completely dry engine
My 2006 had ghostwalking unsafe handling. Subaru could not fix it so dumped it at a CARMAX.
No - the dealership you took it to couldn't fix it, so instead of taking it to another dealership, Subaru mechanic, or calling Subaru Corporate (yes, they would have helped you!), you dumped it. Got it.
I blew one up last week. Rod knock at 68000 on a 15. I maintained it meticulously. Rod knocked Anyway. Dealer wants 10k. I say no way.
The thing with Subaru - on the plus side, you can pull an engine fairly quickly with basic tools - think the last time I did took a hour or so
On the bad side, you have to pull the engine (or at least get everything loosened up) for several things you wouldn't ordinarily need to
I have very bad experience with a Subaru outback transmission solinoid and torque converter. The rock umpiniun went off. 2011 110.000 miles it was a lemon. I will never buy a used Subaru outback ever

Just had my 2010 Subaru Impreza EJ25 blow a head gasket at 138,000 miles. Never buying a Subaru Again. Had 3 in past but seeing how they don't take responsability for inferior parts tells me it's time to part ways. I've maintained it meticulously but knew this was coming based on youtube.
Scotty, I love your videos but I have to tell you there’s Subaru out there with 200 up to 349,000 miles is the highest marked Subu vehicle it’s all about maintenance oil change into and preventive maintenance. Honda had many recalls many problems, so has Toyota.
Timing belts need to be replaced.
The problem is that manufacturers aren't following SAE standards. No one does anymore because manufacturers are global now and cannot follow SAE standards. SAE does not dictate standards anymore, they have no authority. Engineers have no interest in meeting now that the internet is around.
Guessing it was a 2.5L engine. The ej25, particularly the turbos, are grenades. I had one do a big end at 70k miles, and its acommon issue.
The ej20 was pretty good, but they screwed up the oil system in the ej25 series
ej20= 2.0L engine :)
this one has the fb25 with low friction piston rings, the ej25 of ej20 are very strong
@@growingup4487 the ej25t was a huge problem, Subaru USA had a class action law suit against them over this engine.
Oh, and the dead ej255 engine sitting on my garage floor.

My folks just bought a new one because BOTH there 15-20 year old ones now have BLOWN head "gaskets"..
Just like our 2003 Toyota Camry.
Wheel bearings are no fun on those.
In 25 the Forester will be offered with a hybrid system from the Rav, so in 26-27, we’ll sell my wife’s Outback and buy her a new Forester Touring Hybrid.
Then we’ll wait until 29-30, sell my 19 Forester Touring and buy a new Soltera. My wife will drive the Soltera and I’ll start driving her Forester Hybrid.
My wife is a nurse and the hospital where she works allows staff to recharge their EVs for free.
This way it won’t cost us anything for her commute.
Yes we know that when our Subie’s start leaking oil, we’ll sell them and replace them with another Subaru.
After switching from Toyota’s to Subaru’s we save $1,200 per year on our insurance premiums. The Outback and Forester are the safest vehicles on the road, have the best traction and around our area they hold up on resale.
So at our age safety is very high on our list, even though we know that we’ll have to replace them more often than we had to replace our Toyota’s.
Why Subaru refuse to improve there engines? It’s cut sales potential in half 🤷🏽

The 2009-2014 Honda Fit doesn't have a temperature gauge either. Instead there is a light in the bottom left that is lit when the engine is cold. When the engine warms it goes off.

I have a 2012 Forester with 83,000 miles. one bad strut-had to of course buy two was the biggest expense. Why can't they make a screen to prevent leaves from getting inside the engine compartment? It's the only thing i know how to fix however.
well, something to look forward to in my 2012 legacy which will fail first the engine or the CVT transmission.

my 2021 crosstrek base's CVT is failing at just under 20k miles. The dealership said its still within specs and doesnt need a fix (they don't want it to get to lemon law territory). I really regret getting this car :/

I am telling you he is sponsered and paid by toyota and honda because he never says bad things about them subarus are japaneese too they are also good and reliable and only cars that come standard in all wheel drive all the other companies charge extra for it so they end up slightly cheaper and plus if it snows then i wont trust a FWD or RWD i only trust all wheel drive and i wont pay extra for all wheel drive on a camry or corolla because a camry with all wheel drive would cost more than a subaru legacy. Even the impreza that is now just a hatchback comes standard with all wheel drive
Toyota own 20% of Subaru shares. If we are to believe what you are saying, Scotty is walking a fine line... 20 years ago most people where driving 2 wheels drive. To get by in the snow you need a good set of winter tires more than an all wheel drive in my view.Of course ,all wheel drive should do better with the right set of tires. Especially a Subaru. Cheers!
