as much as I agree with some of your points I don't think botw is worse by a bit, I think they focus in completly different gameplay aspects. botw focus is much more in discovery and desolation, the challenge is how to get to things with so little power, totk gives you all the traversal things you need so that is not a problem anymore, now you need to solve puzzles and overcame chalenges with that, the enemies are harder in totk for this reason. I enjoyed more botw than totk because I like walking into unknown places, in botw i did that because it was the only option, in totk I just fly over things because theres no reason to walk anymore. Anyway, my point is just that those two shares the same places but with the core gameplay different, so theres reason to play botw because is a masterpiece and if you like exploring that game is much more focused on that than totk.

There are a lot of reasons to still play BotW. If you’re new to these open world Zelda games for instance and want a simpler introduction. Or if you’re like me at only played it for the first time a couple years ago, so there are still a few quests you haven’t completed yet. Maybe you miss fighting a Guardian or using the runes. There’s still value in that game. I think TotK is an improvement for sure and I’m glad people are gushing about it but I don’t understand why so much of this positive evaluation is being coupled with dragging the game that paved the way for it through the mud. These videos are endlessly irritating.

How did you end up here?" and usually whatever they had to say would answer that question. Or seeing something in the world and being like "That's not how I remember it" which would then incentivise me to go there. But TotK is above BotW in basically every category. Which is a miracle

Also I felt the video game industrial complex ruins games. It values profits over humans. Especially Bethesda. The Morrowind Remake coming out (by independent molders) represents what a good game by them for the people should be. Japan is less touched by the complex, it seems. The monks in the shrines had a sense of mystery. And I won't even explain the music in those shrines. It communicated the aforementioned mythology. You knew the monks were wise and powerful and the power was proven during the surprise fight... unfortunately the statues waiting at the end of the zonai shrines are not mysterious. But an interesting parallel is the use of stone like our own lost civilization. Also the older works of stone are more advanced like on real life. Look how imperfect the newer zonai ruins built presumably by hyrulians looks (in the jungle and in botw v sky islands). Older Egyptian stone works are more advanced. Also gobekli tepi has the most advanced type of stone carving. The images are sticking out. Not carved it. Proven to be built 12000 years ago when we were supposed to be primitive hunter gatherers.
When you say "you get it" you mean you enjoy having recreational fun playing a video game. It can go way deeper than that.
The whole narrative of Gannon reincarnation is terrifying. Art imitates life.
The last thing is the perrenial philosophy. The existence of conscious experiences isn't needed in a material universe. Much like Gannon link and zelda, we do this FOREVER. But deeper still is there is only one person in the room. Thr past and future are superimposed over the present, as are all possible times, places, lives and other forms of consciousness. DMT experiences are like entering a well of souls. 5meo dmt consistently overwhelming shows people what the basement or source level of reality is. Everything's Alive. "God". Near death experiences and dissociative suggest another set of experiences. As do classic psychedelics, and hard-core mediation retreats, stairing at a candle flame for 200 hours and having full 3d hallucinations.
Since our game developers are for profits it hinders channeling this kind of stuff. Zelda makers nailed the terrifying fact of having to do this FOREVER. Idk how it works in reality. I doubt it's like how it is in Zelda. But the trope of good v evil must come up time and time again.

@@eddiedead2702 As someone who disliked and still is not a big fan of Breath of the Wild I couldn't disagree more. The only thing I think Breath of the Wild does better is the story, and even that wasn't amazing. Tears's abilities and the freedom they allow (combined with the map verticality) makes it way more interesting for me to play, anytime I revisit Breath of the Wild I can only play for a bit before getting bored again. Lack of enemy variety, similar dungeon aesthetics, exploration rewards, etc. all killed my enjoyment of that game. To this day I genuinely don't get all the fanfare BotW gets, its still just a decent game imo that happened to give players more freedom than your average open world game, but wasn't anything revolutionary by any means. Tears isn't either but it at least improves on the formula.

    • @eddiedead2702

@@tlozmeowcatz7991 every con you listed still applies to TotK though. TotK makes some improvements on BotW's formula, but it's still very much BotW's formula. I get preferring TotK because of the qol improvements (I myself do) but I don't at all understand liking this game without liking the first one. You're still wondering around expansive landscapes for mono-themed shrines, fragile weapons, and Korok poop. There's just now mono-themed islands floating over those landscapes, you can glue things onto those weapons before they break, and sometimes the poop comes in pairs.

@@eddiedead2702 I mean, I don't dislike the overall formula is the thing, I just think Breath of the Wild does a poor job of keeping things interesting. Tears has a wider variety of exploration rewards (schematics/clothes for the depths, treasure maps for them in the sky, also defeating strong enemies gives you monster parts you can store to use later for weapons), better shrines, better dungeons (albeit still pretty short, but much better than Divine Beasts) more enemy variety, fusing makes combat more interesting, and the abilities give you a lot more creative freedom in puzzle solving and gameplay. The game even has some more interesting side quests I'd argue like the Gazzette stuff, although theyre still not the best. It's not just quality of life, the game does change a lot to that improves on the formula in a lot of ways (koroks still suck though never defending those). Tears has its flaws mind you, I'd still score it as like an 8.5 if I had to, but I prefer playing it so much more than BotW.

On top of that, the four regions had such dire atmospheres, that moment when you realize nobody's going to stop you from entering the shell of Gerudo town but the Gibdos, was so cool. In terms of abilities and how the game uses them, not all of TOTK's shrines are perfect, and there is the issue with cheesing using your newfound power, but I overall preferred the design, in particular the combat ones. Also, all the TOTK abilities feel so immensely useful, fun and important. Tbh, they made BOTW's runes feel limited and frankly a little boring, (except stasis that is.)

Some things about BotW that aren't in Tears: Guardians. Just having that laser pointed at you and the music changing is incredible. And there are helicopter versions of them. You can't deny that's awesome. Divine Beasts. The suck as dungeons but something about being inside one and looking out is incredible atmospheric. Being in the freezing atmosphere on a full moon in Revali's airship or watching Urbosa's camel slowly march in the desert sun while you are inside is something else. Gloom is a bit scary at first but Malice is just way more intimidating. Malice actually has presence in the form of physical blobs and gloom is just paint on the ground/walls, and gloom doesn't even hurt you right away, and gloom damage is actually easier to fix then Malice does. (I think gloom damage is way overhyped once you know it doesn't deal damage to your current hit points, just your maximum). Also the random Yiga attacks after you defeat Kohga and the instant-kill attacks from the Blademasters that pierce Mipha's Grace/Fairies. I mean Tears has many more things, and it's better 10 times over, but there are a few times I want to return the original one.

"the instant-kill attacks from the Blademasters that pierce Mipha's Grace/Fairies" what? Have never seen this and I put in over 300 hours in BoTW. Gloom on the surface is ... negligible. Gloom in the depths is punishing, especially if you don't come prepared. Because it's not just the puddles that sap your maximum hearts, but every enemy that hits you... and in particular one new enemy (that is also on the surface), I won't spoil it if you haven't encountered it yet, but suffice to say... it's way more panic/dread inducing than malice and the occasional flying skull emitter could ever hope to achieve.

@@8BitCerberus during the BotW desert section where you have to get the Lightning Helm back from the Yiga, if you get caught by a Blademaster a fight starts and if you get hit by the Blademaster's attack it's instant Game Over, even if you have Revive items. The gloom hearts debuff your maximum hearts, but only one or two hearts at a time, and it doesn't matter if the heart container is empty or not, and the debuff is easily fixed by going to a lightroot or going outside and i have 50+ sundelions in my pocket at any one time. (Also if you lose all your hearts to gloom a fairy gets you 5 back).

    • @8BitCerberus

@@shirrenthewanderer414 Ahhh right, I do remember that. Was that game over/RIP though, or was it just, like falling off a ledge in a shrine and reset you back at the start? It's been a minute.
The gloom itself is slow to strip your hearts if you're just standing in it, but the gloomified enemies are the real threat. Especially the bigger boss types, like the Hinox, Talus and Lynels. They can strip off quite a few hearts, very quickly if you get hit. And the new monster I mentioned. It's fast, and can hold you for a while, stripping hearts away.
Having so many sundelions is great if you have a way to cook them, or come prepared beforehand and have already cooked them. However, it was the same for the malice, being able to eat pretty much at any time to replenish health or stamina, it trivializes the threat.
Sundelions, on their own, however don't restore the gloomed hearts, so without being cooked their benefit for healing in the depths is lessened. At least with malice it was just normal damage, and even if you didn't have any meals available, you could just chug apples or mushrooms or just about any random edible ingredient and restore 1/4 to 1+ hearts at a time. With gloomed hearts, it's a two part process for healing, first a gloom repairing dish, then another dish or random ingredients to replenish the hearts.

Imo, I think TOTK benefits as a sort of New Game + experience to BOTW (not calling it a DLC), and they both benefit from the open world in different ways.
BOTW feels like it is slowly introducing the world to you, you feel like link learning about the world as if it was the first time. Traversal is much more crucial in this game as you can't just find high points to glide from except if you climb a mountain or tower. The world feels less “lived in”, in the sense that you feel the consequences of the Calamity and spend most of your time pondering what happened in the past. The story is much more about introducing you to this world and it is the main focus.
TOTK, in the other way, benefits from your past knowledge. You are in the same position as link, in a world you already know, but that has been significantly changed. Your decision is much less focused on “oh, what's that place?” and more on “I can't wait to see how x place has changed!”. For that, traversal is way easier thanks to the skyview towers, sky islands, ascend and rewind (not even counting the ultrahand contraptions) , and exploration is fully dependent on the player's curiosity, not just for traversal. In that way, it allows players who already know the world to simply skip to the places they want to explore instead of traversing the same ground as before, while still allowing others to fully explore this renovated Hyrule. It also makes you feel much less alone, and the ease of traversal just hammers in the feeling of a more interconnected world post-BOTW.
Also, it is purely based on personal opinion, but both games have a unique aesthetic (Sheikah/Zonai) that might make you favor a game over another)
Also, both games focus on completely different things, with BOTW Shrines being more about the basic mechanics of the world and TOTK being fully focused on the new set of overlayed mechanics (for obvious reasons)
In conclusion, BOTW is more based on traversal, the feeling of isolation, and venturing through a vast, unfamiliar world, where the challenge comes mostly through traversal.
TOTK on the other hand is more focused on the new gimmicks, experimentation, the feeling of renewal and connection, and exploring parts of a newly-changed, but familiar Hyrule.

"I agree with your analysis, but..."
What you are describing is the "intent" behind the overall design of both games. And in that regard, yes, BotW does achieve what it set to make.
      But only that.
The main issue is that BotW cannot sustain interest for long when dealing with the side content that is intended to fill the world and make you sidetrack and "oh!" and "ah!" properly. Be it due to time constrains or other usual game dev issues, Nintendo ultimately settled with the type of content either a western RPG or a procedurally generated game would dump on you (grind).
That's a problem for a Zelda game because, after all the great adventures full of varied content we were used to, to just have us grind... defeats the purpose.
Hence why, so that BotW becomes what it should be, I think Nintendo should retroactively revamp the side content to be up to TotK's standards:
      Give all that grind meaning.
Because, at the end of the day, TotK is still a grindfest. The only thing that changed is that the grind has a clear, defined purpose that makes it desirable. The key is in how the presentation changes.
An example: Some things only need a few lines of dialogue to make it logical.
Why does X guy needs 50 mushrooms? Because there's a plague going on because side effect of the Divine Beast doing rampage and people need medicine. You can lock up that quest behind the resolution of the Divine Beast quest, and make it so that this quest unlocks a guy that can trade ingredients for better quality elixirs you can't otherwise make yourself.
Or another one: Have those annoying "Strength" Shrines give a reward that is part of a grand quest that makes something happen across the game that needs that strength, like unleashing another secret boss, or whatever.
Most of that does not need to be too complicated or have the devs rebuild the side content from the ground up. Just following its natural progression, with the ultimate goal being leaving each area in a state that hints at the state you find them in TotK. Like some of those bosses or items or secrets being Zonai stuff to tie things over, or hints about the depths or the sky islands to tease TotK.
That's the old "Zelda" way we grew up with and grew to love and crave. What devs call the "Lock and Key Mechanic". The grind being merely the means to procure the keys.
It's the same thing that happened with Elden Ring last year, only in reverse. And FromSoftware did promise DLC in that regard.
What this proves is that an already good game can be improved, its flaws fixed, its roughness polished until it is as close to the perfect state as humanly possible.
Of course, BotW won't reach the same level of craziness TotK achieve with the sheer freedom Zonai Tech gives you, but at least it would not feel like a tedious slog for chum change.
If they do that, then this new batch of Zelda games will be truly unforgettable. What say you, Slightly? Think an influencer like yourself could push that rock up the hill towards the ears of our dear devs from Nintendo?

Just by the title. I don't like you...
I watched the video, I have so many complaints:
    1. It shows that you just rushed through botw, no wonder you like totk more if you actually did the stuff you wanted to.
    2. I lt also shows that you haven't finished totk, BEFORE REVIEWING IT...
    3. The shrines are subjective. I for one liked the puzzles in botw, I liked not always having to do one, and I especially liked actually getting worth while items in shrines. Botw shrines often gave you equipment. What do I get in totk? Oh great... Another Ruby.
    4. The durability and fightings.
    4.1 durability doesn't really matter I haven't noticed a big difference.
4.2 sometimes I pick up weapons and use them mid fight, but it's usually more effective to prepare them.
4.3 the fusions, omg the fuaions.
4.3.1 i think at this point I've spend a solid 30 minutes just going left and right on that stupid item bar trying to find the right thing to fuse to my arrows, instead of just selecting an arrow type.
4.3.2 killing most monsters is still absolutly useless. Most of the drops have horrendous fusion damage. The second you get some good items to fuse, you have no reason to go for any other enemies.
4.4 the fights are less creative in totk. Because of all of the 50.000 fusion options most of the fights get super boring, because the effective strategies aren't the fun ones and the fun ones are so bad that it's usually not viable
4.5 the world in botw is new it's interesting and you slowly discover it bit by bit, it felt like an adventure to get to around. In totk the world is different and interesting sure, but it's way to easy to traverse. And it feels repetitive and overwhelming at the same time. The typical way to explore is: build a hoverbike, fly to lookout tower, fly up, look at an island which is 80% the same as the last one, repeat.
4.6 it's a squeal as you correctly stated, but it's not an upgrade as your implying. It's just a different game. There isn't much of a competition between the two. They are both good, but in different ways.
Please note I like both games. My critic is only onsided to address the points made in this video. Also no hate to the creator, we're both allowed to have an opinion, but shitting on one of my all time favourite games doesn't get you any browny points.

I think playing BoTW first isn’t a “must”, but it definitely enhances the player experience when they get around to playing ToTK, same way knowing the lore of BoTW helps understand the events of Age of Calamity. Since it’s a map I was already familiar with, I spent a considerable amount of time running to my favourite locations of BoTW to see how they’re faring now instead of progressing the main quests; recognising all the changes and nods to BoTW is a treat. One of my friends is currently playing ToTK and they’ve never played BoTW. We both adore the game and everything it has to offer, despite us having different histories with this version of Hyrule.

I hate to be “Mr. Negative” by countering your words (especially since I have finished the plot but haven’t touched it after), but I did not enjoy TotK as much as BotW. Possibly the biggest reason is how I see this as just a “rewritten reality”. The Sheikah tech is all gone, this Ganondorf should remember Link and Zelda when he was the Calamity and how the story told in the tear memories is just OoT again. Like, Zelda should be more confident in herself than what she was in the memories. And the “Sages” don’t stack up to the personality of Champions, instead looking like reused models (which kinda made reuniting with your old friends sadder knowing their new titles will be “Sage”)
The fusing makes weapons not as appealing (fusing to arrows makes using the bow a drag at times) and I feel like the game mocks me whenever I lost to a Mokoblin with a BRANCH. The obviously good fusion items are always gonna be on the boss class monsters and I have a bunch of Shrines I didn’t like while most were just obvious answers with fusing. I didn’t even get Autobuild until BEFORE the final boss. The Depths was, by far, the WORST part of the game for me. It was too dark to really find anything unless you had plenty of glow seeds and the heart reduction made trekking harder and scarier. Sorry, but I’d rather go back to BotW where I had endless bombs, specially built arrows and had Guardian grade weapons

    • @stefanklietsch5500
      @stefanklietsch5500 Рік тому

I agree with some of your stated reasons for preferring BotW, though I am not sure that Tears' story is really a retelling of OoT. There are parts of it that echo OoT (i.e. Ganondorf's false pledge), but Ganondorf does not really have the same victory in TotK as he does in OoT. In OoT, Ganondorf basically wins and gets his way for 7 years until Link stops him, in TotK he is semi-defeated and barely suppressed until Link encounters him. The story also has a dramatic opening in a way that BotW and even OoT do not, even if it is not a story as good as that of several Zelda games. And even if it is lacking in ful originality, you are against a villain full of personality, which Calamity Ganon is not.
I do miss the Guardians from BotW, enemies in TotK are not quite the same persistent threat.

Wow vastly different experience here... It's funny because for 6 years I've fiercely defended BOTW's "emptiness" in explicit rewards and vast stretches of nature, with the cheesy yet IMO valuable mantra that "it's about the journey more than the end" and how artistically relevant it felt. This simplicity and focus were a strength that also applied to the story which was objectively lacking for an epic story telling perspective, but for anyone wanting to take in the lore from a distance and fill in the blanks, it had an amazing blend of nostalgia/mystery through existing lore and symbolism, melancholy/cheerfulness seeing ruins and ghosts while preparing to reclaim Hyrule.
In TOTK, past the relatively short phase of discovery most of the things often described as improvements added up to busy work in my view. Not that I didn't enjoy or that there weren't improvements, or at least neat additions. The arm abilities are the one gameplay aspect I think 100% improve over BOTW. Temples are overall cool with pretty high highs but very mediocre lows, so nothing incredible. Sages companions are a good idea for their own temple, then they're annoying. In world structure the sky is extremely underwhelming, with not many interesting islands and not doing that much with skydiving and verticality. The depths in obscurity are an amazing concept but hit repetition quickly, which may seem to repeat a flaw from BOTW but at least back then everything was new with varied landscapes. Yes they've touched up the surface with neat finds, but I'm among many players who know BOTW like the back of their hand so 80-90% felt like revisiting a place we've visited for 6 years up to recently. Same with repurposed DLC armor which unfortunately rewards a good chunk of the depths treasure hunt.
The story is more epic but suffers in that they haven't managed to tie open progression with linear story telling yet. We're happy to see Ganondorf and a couple twists, it's a nice motivation but like the rest by mid-game I had realized I shouldn't expect the game to tell anything too interesting. Main characters are in cutscenes, plot elements are presented very briefly and factually, Rauru/Ganondorf/Zelda get to do one cool thing and we move on quickly, dialogues are awkward especially if done "out of order".
Still an excellent 150 hours up to the credits, an extra fun 50 hours for some completion, I criticize because I care so much but it's absolutely "GOTY material" for those who care. But at this moment it doesn't feel like it has the same legs as BOTW. I maybe needed a break and we'll see in months/years and possibly with DLC. It still feels like BOTW was a unique game at a unique time and that TOTK, while doing more than enough to stand on its own and complete this impressive arc, is very redundant in major aspects and doesn't necessarily improve or deepen the experience by adding items and layers.

I enjoyed Breath of the Wild. It's a great game as long as you're ok with the environment itself being a reward for exploration sometimes. Because yeah the actual content can get stale after a while. I managed to put 160 hrs into it including DLC and I definitely enjoyed it. But I understand its flaws. TOTK is great because it filled the world with way more content and provided better and faster methods of traversal. Being able to build a cool Zonai machine to travel over the more empty parts of the world makes a huge difference.
That being said, I still think BOTW is worth playing. The Divine Beasts are unique. They are better than people give them credit for. And there's some very memorable shrines and shrine quests. I think I will revisit both games someday.

Depths are just filler which is more a survival challenge that doesn't really do anything except for existing for the same of existing. Quantity doesn't mean quality, that's the huge issue. My enthusiasm is killed by basically making everything an expendable resource, it's a nice looking weapon too bad it's just gonna break within 10minutes, That's a cool fuse weapon I've created, it's just gonna break in a few minutes. Even armour is just repeats with the exception of some, even then they're bland af and don't seem to do what their description entails.

I think exploring a open world environment would be fun if somebody hasn't done it before, but I've played too many before this point. BOTW doesn't feel so novel or fresh after I had already played Shadows of the Collosus all the way back on PS2 (it was also an action-adventure game involving combat-based gameplay sequences, as well as platforming, puzzle game elements, and exploring a landscape that is both equally and intentionally barren and empty at times).
To a degree all Grand Theft Auto games from 3 onwards delivered a world that itched my scratch for exploring too. So I think Zelda BOTW needed to offer at lot more to keep my interest.

"more interesting story". I would like to hear you elaborate on this opinion. What makes the story more interesting? I found the memories to be handled poorly, the post dungeon scenes to be repetruve, and the themes to be nonexistent. BOTW had a clear theme of isolation, change, and survival. Who are you? Where is everyone save this old man? What happened while a century passed? Does the world remember you? Who are the descendants of your old friends? How do I find the answer to these questions without perishing to the hands of these robots? Tears of the Kingdom's narrative doesn't speak to me. Seeing that there's sludge damaging Zora's domain isn't as impactful as finding out Mipha loved link and was going to propose marriage before she died, for example. Survival is less interesting when one can fly over everything. I can't take the world seriously when half the NPCs are addicted to some randsom woman's flamboyant fashion.

My *one* complaint is the double whammy of clothes and clothing upgrades being more expensive while there are fewer ways to get rupees without actively searching for them. In BOTW you could get rupees passively just by finding chests or doing side quests, but now most of those are replaced with other rewards. There are *some* quests and storylines that you know you'll get rupees out of, but those are limited and often don't pay enough to go out of your way for. You *could* just sell stuff from your inventory, but now that the inventory has expanded uses it actively disincentivizes you to sell what you have. Blupees are more common now, but there needs to be an easier way to passively make money.

The best glitchless rupee farming method remains unchanged from BotW. Just chuck all your monster parts with decently high sell prices into elixirs and become a potion seller. Might be a bit more tedious but at least that's 1.8x the sell value on junk you'd probably sell anyway.

    • @lizzytheowl577
      @lizzytheowl577 Рік тому +4

No offense, but I feel like some of the people in this thread are missing my point.
The problem isn't that there aren't ways to farm rupees, it's that rupee farming is almost necessary because you don't *passively* get rupees as often as in BOTW. If you have to constantly sell stuff or every so often sell a handful of valuable items to get enough rupees to buy things, that isn't passive. Passive is you run up to a chest, open it, and there's rupees inside, or a quest gives you rupees, or something drops rupees (Like Blupees). You should be able to build up savings throughout the game without needing to farm at all, and the only things you should have to farm for are quests that specifically want you to farm rupees or when you're buying a lot of expensive stuff at once.
The other half of the problem is basically everything you want to buy is more expensive, especially the clothes. If you want armor that can only be bought *and* you want to fully upgrade it, that's 500+ rupees you need to add to the price tag of that clothing item.

Botw in my opinion, will forever be the best Zelda game. And also totk sucks because they have really confusing aspects of the game all around you. I just want to know what to do. And I know that Botw also has that problem, but totk does it in a less fun way of figuring out. Botw actually makes it fun to figure out what to do next. I also love Botw shrines and hate Totk shrines. Like I said, the puzzles are just so boring.

  • @hoodiesticks
    @hoodiesticks Рік тому +2

Hi, I'm a Zelda fan that has never seen your content but was pulled in by your provocative title. You bring up a lot of valid points about the two games, but ... no. The title is just blatantly wrong. Breath of the Wild is still a great game, and in some ways I actually prefer it to Tears.
Regarding Shrines: I do like the variety of TotK's shrines, but the main problem I have with it is that Ultrahand and Fuse both take time to use properly. In BotW, the puzzles are set up so that there is very little time between thinking of a solution in your head and executing it in the game, so the "Aha!" moment feels that much more satisfying. In TotK, there might be a full 5 minutes of building between idea and execution, which just makes the puzzle feel more annoying than satisfying. I still like the shrines in both games, and I still get disappointed by the Tests of Strength, but BotW's puzzles just feel better to solve for me.
Regarding weapons: Yeah, you're right. Fuse completely changes how I approach combat, and it makes me excited to fight monsters (especially since I can literally see their horns on their heads). The one thing I'll point out though is that BotW is a lot more generous with strong weapons than you might think. The game tracks how strong you are using a hidden xp system, and puts stronger and stronger weapons in monster camps as time goes on. You might be worried about spending a Royal Claymore on a monster camp, but after the fight you'll find a Dragonbone Moblin Club that does just as much damage. This is true of TotK to some extent as well, though, so it's not really a point in favour of BotW, just a detail that makes the drawbacks of weapon durability easier to swallow.
Regarding side quests: Yeah, you're right, the side quests in BotW kinda suck. But exploration in TotK feels a lot more guided and predictable as a result of this resource economy. In BotW, I didn't need a side quest to tell me to go somewhere, because I would find something interesting just by wandering. TotK has fewer korok puzzles and most quests are started from towns or stables, so if you wander without a goal in mind you're not as likely to find something cool. TotK wants you to seek out specific resources in the depths, or caves, or sky islands, etc. whereas BotW wants you to just climb that hill in front of you and then improvise from there. Neither system is necessarily better, but I preferred the freeform exploration of BotW to the focused questing of TotK.
Sorry for the walls of text, but I wanted to express why BotW still feels so special even now that TotK is out. It sucks that you didn't really vibe with BotW on release, but I'm glad the sequel captured your interest. Hope you enjoy the regional phenomena just as much! I've only done two of them so far, but they were a blast!

You’ve made some great points here especially the guided vs open exploration that the two games offer with their side quests. The only thing I’d kinda disagree on is the shrines. While Ultrahand and Fuse do take time to use I think that is a huge benefit they have over BoTW shrines. Sometimes in the original you could walk into a shrine, immediately know what to do and you’d have a spirit orb in your hand 2 minutes later. Those shrines weren’t fun puzzles to me because they were too easy. Now that’s not to say that doesn’t happen in ToTK but I will say it’s a lot less frequent. The times where I’m scratching my head trying to figure things out makes that “Aha” moment much more satisfying

I dissagree. If you didn't like BOTWs exploration, that's just you. I loved it. TOTK had no exploration, because you enter almost every new area from the air. I liked the new powers in TOTK, but the shrines were way too easy. I had my friend start with TOTK, because I thought like you, that it was better in all ways, but now (having finished the game) I regret not having him play BOTW first instead.
BOTW is the brilliant game. TOTK is just the remake. Not a sequel, but a remake. The Depths, get boring after 30 minutes, and when you've seen 3 sky Islands, you have basically seen them all. The rest of the map is almost Identical to BOTW other than those new Areas. All the loot is copied from BOTW and so are most of the monsters. And I dont think I have to explain why the Guardian Machines from BOTW are more exciting than the New Robots, that are just reskinned Bokoblins.

One thing about tears of the kingdom that no one seems to mention is eventually you hit the wall… you’re 100-200 hours in, have a nice selection of upgraded armor, dozens of high level weapons, basically 999 brightbloom seeds and the magic fades dry. Every shrine boils down to do this or just use recall. The depths are nice but when you have 1000s of zonaite, 100s of charges (V.1.1.2 btw, no duplication glitches), and the occasional underground yiga bases just give you schematics you could’ve made yourself but 10x better. Don’t get me started on fuse and durability, sure there are tons of interesting combinations but when you have 50+ silver horns there is no need to experiment, you’re just hurting yourself at that point. Heck, once you’ve done the gerudo portion of the story, you don’t have to think about what to fuse to arrows, the gibdo bones are too strong. The surface caves don’t even matter anymore once you’ve gotten all the rewards so now they’re the exact same as the koroks. But there is something fun about that; being so overpowered that you can just fly over a hinox, talus or frox raining down arrows without them being the wiser. The materials don’t mean much anymore, but there is still stuff to do. It feels like a perfect sequel.

I've lost count how many Blue Lizalfos I've killed, I need their tails for upgrading the Zora armor, and I've had exactly 1 drop. As of this comment I have about 30 Blue Lizalfos Horns, and no clue how many have shattered along the way being fused to weapons before I got more powerful ones to use instead. 1 tail. So, yeah, I duped the rest of the tails I needed. With a drop rate that abysmal, it's no wonder people are constantly looking for dupe glitches.

I liked botw so much better then tears of the kingdom. I enjoyed some time playing it but in all honesty… if you asked if I liked the game, I do not
Something was very magical about botw when it was played for the first time and totk was disappointing. The first five or so hours of gameplay was accelerating cause I was getting similar emotions to when I first played breathe of the wild until I realized… I spent 200 hours on the first game without boredom. I was five hours in and felt compelled to do the storyline to have more intrigue with the game, and it resulted in frustration with the lore. I was so excited for new lore but I was hoping it may be able to connect with the older games or at least botw. AT LEAST the game it was a sequel to 😭 anyways everyone’s free to enjoy the game or like it better then botw but I don’t think I’ve had that big of a let down in a while
I wish Nintendo would realize constraints aren’t a bad thing. Boundaries or being tied down to something is good. When you try to do everything you’re essentially talking about nothing. The best thing they could’ve done for the game was either leave old aspects of the games out of it completely and make something entirely new, or have something directly impact the timeline.

I think botw is the probably the 6th or 7th greatest game that I have ever played, but it's still amazingly good in my opinion. Totk is definitely a huge improvement over botw though. Botw was alot of fun, but sometimes it felt like a chore. Somehow Totk never feels like a chore. It's just always fun and always interesting thanks to the new abilities.

Botw was better, you spend way too much time in the menus in totk, like when linking an item to the arrows or building stuff
The story is a bit of a mess and the underground isnt particularly interesting like in elden ring, its the same biome everywhere
Honestly i like it but botw was better to me

    • @4dojo
      @4dojo 9 місяців тому +1

@@waiz0231 I respect that. There's no right or wrong when it comes to liking one thing better than another. You'd be surprised how many times I say that I like one movie more than another or one super hero more than another and people get so worked up that you don't like the same things in the same order that they do. 😅

    • @4dojo
      @4dojo 8 місяців тому

@@Fiucha8893 Fair enough. Everyone is different. The reason why BotW felt like a chore to me at times is because the shrines were more repetitive and there were fewer ways to solve them, so I got bored with BotW shrines at times. TotK shrines however vary a lot more and there's usually many different ways to solve each one. Sometimes I would replay the same shrine in TotK multiple times just to try other ways to solve it.

    • @Fiucha8893
      @Fiucha8893 8 місяців тому

@@4dojo It's interesting because I had the opposite experience with the shrines. I feel like the shrines were more varied in Breath of the Wild because they made you combine all your abilities: You had to use Magnesis here, use Stasis here, use bomb there... Whereas, the shrines in Tears of the Kingdom are mostly just Ultrahand everywhere, sometimes they add Recall to the equation, but nothing more.
I still think that the shrines in Tears of the Kingdom were fun and had cleverly done puzzles, but they're not at the level of the Breath of the Wild shrines for me.

There are still blessing shrines in totk but i feel people often miss the point of blessing shrines, the puzzle is getting to the shrine. There were just a handful this time that made me feel i just got given the shrine as oppose to the several that made me feel that way in botw

I actually disagree: I enjoyed looking for the shrines in BOTW, but I'm probably biased due to my love for puzzle solving. ...And I found some pretty awesome shrines back in that game. Some of them were as long as the average Zelda dungeon!

i beat botw for the first time today. and it was breathtaking, the exploration was amazing and helping everyone in hyrule while completing the memories in order was great and i did every shrine and DLC and all side quests. I cried at the end after i beat ganon it was an amazing experience. I watched the 3rd trailer after and started crying bad. im so excited to play it. I'm giving myself a break first then I'll jump in. I've heard it is amazing and I can't wait. I don't know anything about the game other than that trailer.

Man, I get your points, like, the weapon durability thing is a lot better on TOTK as you said, but out of then that, I think everything, it's pretty much worse.
The Shrines for example, I like BOTW Shines a lot more (except the test of strength, that's pretty stupid) because they were actually a puzzle you had to solve, on TOTK a lot of them is basically build something to get to the end, also on BOTW they felt new, everytime I found a Shrine in breath of the wild I got excited, now, I just do them for pure obligation, I think also because in Breath of the Wild, the world was desing for the shrines, so just finding one was already fun, like the Dragon mission you mentioned, it is so cool, however on TOTK, I see some stuff on the map that was specifically made for shrines, like the Two Rings region or the place you had to roll a snow ball to open a dorr, that was small challenge to get a shrine, now, on TOTK the same places are there for liteally no reason, so the map and the shrines don't feel like one anymore, there still some fun shrines, but I don't know, I honestly don't have any fun doing them.
the exploration on Breath of the Wild was so much more cool as well, in the beggining of the game I saw a Devine Beast flying in the distace, and I remember wanting to go there, the mission with the dragon on lynairy moutain was so freaking cool, or seeing a flash of light on the moutain and find a freaking blue horse, on BOTW I was always looking at the distance and seeing something interesting, on TOTK you don't have nothing like that outside the main missions, it's just a big open world with just a bunch of NPC missions, there is no big discoveries.
Koroks was fun to do in BOTW, now it's jus a pain in the ass having to stop your progress to became a uber for stupid koroks, also you have more of an order to do things in TOTK, there was two moments I was in the "wrong place", like, if you find the dungeons you can't do anything if you don't have the stupid sage, on Breath of the wild that kinda thing almost never happens.
The mechanics in BOTW was so much more polish as well, like the powers from the champions, they were very simple to use, and also much more powerfull, on TOTK they are so complicated and jenky, and they don't do anything cool, Riju and the Goron just explode things, like, what's the point? I have bombs that can do just that. On Breath of the Wild I could destroy everything arround me with the urbosas fury, or something like the Revoli's gale totally changed the way you traversal the world. on TOTK the sage powers are pretty silly.
I don't know, I had fun with TOTK, but outside of the main mission there is nothing meaningful to do, just a bunch of NPC missions, and the mechanics are very jenky and slow, I think BOTW is a much better game.
