The DOD reminds me more of Yngwie's Alcatrazz tone with that slight midrange bump and a bit more smoothness than the Fender pedal. The Fender pedal reminds me of his current tone, with has become really "bitey" and "percussive," almost offending my ears.
wow, thanks for that.. I was thinking the Fender one might be an improvement.. but I will take your word for it. I can not believe as great as he is, he is involved with crud gear.. he cant possibly use this garbage..I wonder if he actually tries this stuff, or is he just so busy he just calls someone on the phone and says "put out something with my name on it, sell the little bastard by the dozen, just do it". I mean the black YJM pedal was like $65 and made in China. Doesnt he know stuff made in China is about the worst advertisement?
Years of excessive volume have wrecked YJM's hearing. The new Fender is pedal EQ'd to compensate for the degradation in high frequencies that comes with hearing loss. I prefer YJM's older tone from the Rising Force era. It was warm and not biting.
Ye...i see what you mean...the Fender is kinda optimised for the "SD Fury" pickups signal, which sound alot like that, less open, but more articulated sounding and biting attack. Sound great for legato though, and some of his playing now sound even better for this... But yeah...for overall lead tone, all the picking/economy picking stuff, sounded much more pleasant and dynamic with his older combo Dimarzio HS4 neck/Dod grey/308... In the exception of his first solo album, i never really loved the tone in that HS3 period with in the neck position. But i agree, his best tone was early FS-1 pups with less gain, DOD grey spec + greensback celestion...the grail... HS3 overall is clearly better for light crunch rythm in bridge position with "DOD preamp like" and work better with Tubescreamer pedals in the neck position imho. But to me here, this old DOD 250 is ok for crunch riffs with bridge pickup, but sound nothing like the grey spec, it lack treble clarity for lead tone, and the outdated flabbyness/tracking is terrible comparing to the "Fender" for my ears at least.
Hugo Bueno Hrd tight, I owned the Dod a few months back, it was indeed bass heavy, flabby if you will. This Yjm overdrive by fender sounds Great in comparison. Great. review here!!!
Brother I believe the yellow one is better because there is a natural middle frequency it has to sound better and the other one it's almost the same like you said they probably change the capacitor so it is with more gain and not so much middle ... India the site the yellow one doesn't have that much distortion because Malmsteen was younger ,and was playing with more power from the left hand nowadays he is much older so he need more gain ;) by the way you're f****** amazing guitarist you going to be 100-percent subscribed from me respect to you man thank you for the video
This was fast and furious... :) what playing...excellent... I like the yellow one a bit more. It is pure vintage Yngwie. Thanks for defining starting point with few chords. Great job
07:20 says it all. The DOD is wayy more musical and easier on the ears, the Fender has too much bite it hurts. The DOD was only flabby when you played rhythm with the neck pickup but with the bridge pickup its much more musical. Why would you play rhythm on the neck pickup anyway?
I agree the Fender pedal is too trebly and bitey. As far as the bottom flappiness....I play the neck pickup exclusively and there are tricks to adjusting your sound to attenuate some of those low end frequencies to keep your low end tight even while playing the neck pickup! It's a great sound when you get things dialed in just right.
DOD sounds great, but it feels like you are working harder on it.With the fender, it sounds like the punch is more there, so playing might be easier...Also, for the difference in price, I am pretty sure you can get closer to the sound of the DOD with the Fender just by adjusting the EQ a bit...
fender one is crazy....it doesnt sound like a pedal ...it sounds like a monster roaring...its very articulate and when you play it...sounds like malmsteen's odyssey tone exactly
maaaan. youve got a nice tone and touch. very cool demo. would have liked to hear it with a better mic to be honest, because you can pick up the character better. ive got the fender since some years now and im very happy with it. it has tons of articulated gain to play through an old marshall crunch channel. i just love it. im also a fan of the BossSD1. But it doesnt kick your crunch channel as much as the yngwie pedal does.
I was able to mod the fender pedal to the lm 741 op amp chip witch gave it a much better tone . But the fender pedal dose not take the pm 741 op amp chip there for you need to use a lc 1457 ok amp chit with have the same tone as the lm 741op amp chip because the wiring issues. After the mod the fender won't any lose the hotness how ever the tone gets much better..
cool comparison - i had my yellow dod modded to grey speck from modest mouse, have another from analog man modded…. i have the original grey, one made by magy that is superior to the grey, and of course the new fender. i now use a hybrid set up … old 1987x with 65 watt celestions angled 1960 cab and metropoulos mkii with 75w vented speakers with 1987x use grey pedal and with metropoulos with fender for a more layered vibe and it sounds killer cool blend of yngwie eras and in some ways best of both still an yngwie fan boy many years after video was published
At least for me in this demo the DOD wins every sample- pretty easily actually. I'd buy the DOD over the Fender every day- much more musical... The Fender was much harsher/ brighter maybe- but not in a good way.
Thanks, this was a great comparison. I was considering the Xotic BB before running into this and while it is probably better the price difference is just huge! Did anyone ever compare the YJM against the BB? Cheers!
+Guitar In Your Home Oh, the Fender for sure. For such a cheap little pedal it was super impressive. It was undoubtably tighter, even though I think Yngwie doesn't mind his bottom-end being a little flubby to cover up his sloppiness that he sometimes rolls with. I have the Fender and the Black DOD, I'm between amps at the moment so I have no way to even compare them properly :/ Again, really nice to hear someone with a Strat and a Marshall with some actual Yngwie-esque chops demoing his gear. So often it's an old country guy with a Les Paul into some 20 watt combo, or a EMG equipped BC Rich in a Blackstar. Next time share those licks off too!! Haha.
+Jed Nadin thankyou for your reply, u know thats EXACTLY why i made this comparison vid, when i waslookin to buy this pedal, there was nothin i could find on utube with yngwie shred comparing pedals.
Tarotecana The Fender to me is just junk!A step up from the 308 which is one of the worst overdrives ever made so i would go with the 250 anyday. And the new 250 reissue is really good if you dont want to spend 400 bucks on the grey original one get one of those.
Great demo! I have a newer grey spec and it does the marching out thing but farts out on the lower strings to some degree. I see why he is looking for something "liquid" as he has said.
Great playing, and super demo! Maybe one is better at getting a certain album tone than the other, so for purists they can have maybe the best of three worlds? Red, yellow and grey! I agree the Fender has more bite though....but the DOD wasn't unpleasant....which speaks for your playing as well. Great examples.
kinda like them both... Dod is sweet in its own right...Fender probably works better cutting threw a mix...and yes,it's a bit more clearer so to speak. Do you have comparisons with the DoD yjm model? I would love to hear that! great video! it is nice to hear Yngwie products, played by someone with Yngwie-ish talent#
Of course man, I am a guitar teacher for my job 🤟🏻 I have been Zoom classes since April. Right now I teach 35-40 classes a week online 😎 if you'd like to try my private Zoom TRIAL class, 30mins, then get in touch 👍🏻🎸
You should try the YJM 308 DOD overdrive (black and gold box). It's got tons of high end gain to the point of losing some bass. I have 2 of these and one is modded to the gray spec (more bass). I have the same yellow reissue (741 op amp)and the fender version as well. The different op amps make a huge difference. All great pedals but the yellow is my least favorite. I use the stock 308 (gain at 0) to tighten up a darker amp like the Carvin legacy.
Thank you so much for this video. Maybe rest of this message will be helpful for somebody looking for a noise gate. So I learned a lot from this video, about Ingwie but also about the NS2! I finally got enough pedals to have a reason to buy a pedal board (mainly because it's easier to clean the floor when if I can lift all pedals of the floor together:). I got the Ingwie Fender pedal and the "ISP G String II" mega damn expensive noise gate out of the box (bought both 2 years ago). Long story short - the ISP did crazy shit when I included the amp in it's noise suppressing loop - the default noise of the overdrive pedals became an annoying hiss, and when the phase was on - the whole rig went insane! I though the ISP was damaged so went and got the NS2, but discovered it does the same thing. So I finally read the manual of the boss and saw it needs to suppress only the noisy pedals (no need to include the amp with fx send/return). So then I plugged both ISP and BOSS in turns - they both worked! BUT - the BOSS wasn't clamping the tail as good as the ISP and I was ready to return the BOSS to the store. But now I tried your simple connection and it works as good as the ISP! I didn't test them side by side but now I'm keeping the NS2! Wasn't expecting that from the notoriously known BOSS pedal. Thank you!
250 is darker because there is the first cap .01nf (on 308 and fender is .001nf). With yjm pickup I prefer 250,with hot rails I prefer 308 and fender OD
Yes if you play chords on the neck pickup with the level and the drive up all the way on the pedal then it can get flabby but how often those anyone do that?Never i would say its more for solos. And with the yellow DOD you can actually use the bridge pickup for solos which the Fender you get that nasty treble. So thats why Yngwie only uses the neck pickup(95%)for solos these days which is a shame. So get the the old grey one or the new reissue DOD 250(with a led light)its pretty close to the original grey one.
The DOD sounds way better! And never use the level on full on the 250 thats when it gets”flabby".Yngwie had the level set at 9 a clock and the drive on full.
DOD all the way.!Less trebely which is a good thing. The Fender is a pretty shitty pedal but its better then the DOD 308 which was horrible. And I hate it when people say"more crisp"or more"bite"like thats a good thing i dont think so.A warm fat sound is the way to go and the grey old one is the best by far just make sure the level is around 9-10 a clock and the overdrive at full then you get the old warm Yngwie sound that he used on the first solo albums.
sounds cool, do it.. these pedals just seem cheap, and kind of lousy, for a pro guitarist with a decent amount of money to use. I mean, they are not terrible, but they seem like something a poor guy like me would buy, until he can get something better, not like something a guy with a Ferrarri, and has toured the world, would have, or put his name on. I just dont get why he would have his name on a $65 pedal made in China..where was the original DOD 250 pedal made? Is it a distortion pedal? Was it ever considered high quality? I read in an interview with him, he said when he tried the DOD 250 at first, it was not a distortion pedal like other ones he tried, he said it was more of a boost, "just made a huge note" is how he described it. Any thoughts on that?
i'm not sure where they are made actually. They are definately priced cheap, but I'd imagine that those lovely old vintage 50w marshall heads and old 70s strats must have had much to do with the tone as well? I also have the Doug Aldrich rocketfuel pedal, it cost me something like £230.00 from the US? It's a really great pedal, it's good a boost section and an overdrive section, it does EXACTLY what it says on the tin, but I do prefer the £45.00 yngwie pedal for all my shreddy metal guitar needs! weird huh? :-)
who gives a fuck what you ''like'' or do not ....''classic 1969 ''... why won't you baby boomers die already. you're perceived knowledge of this topic is not of any value.
Strats sound so horrible and tinny. Get a Les Paul, then you wouldn't need a pedal ;). In this comparison, the pedals sound alike to me, the DOD perhaps a bit warmer (better), probably rolls off some of those most piercing highs (Fender players seem to lost some of the ability to hear high pitches unless played at full volume :D). The LED on the Fender is handy for the comparison.Defo. the DOD for me. The yellow DOD sounds more like the original grey spec. DOD, which is even warmer/fuller.
The DOD reminds me more of Yngwie's Alcatrazz tone with that slight midrange bump and a bit more smoothness than the Fender pedal. The Fender pedal reminds me of his current tone, with has become really "bitey" and "percussive," almost offending my ears.

Very unlike a boss SD 1 that doesn't have that high noise floor.
Awesome review! That's how it's done. Did you get a chance to compare the Fender pedal with the DOD YJM308? Thank you!
Man frick, I gotta learn the speedy lick in A Harmonic Minor!
Great comparison. And awesome playing 🤘🎸
The Dod is Yngwie s old tone, which I love. The other one sounds "better". I´d buy
the DOD! haha

hello sr . CUESTION .. i have a vox ac 15 and the yngwie strat, you think that i can sOud the same with that fender pedal.. Thank you
DOD 250 is the best pedal...low noise big tone...
Vary good tehnica of player! What kinds pickups you use on guitar?!
I think the Fender one sounds a bit better. It is a touch brighter, but I think it's also tighter and punchier.
I mean guys just remember the yjm pedal is probably going to sound closer to Yngwie because it’s literally his signature pedal
WHERE IS THE HS-4, NECK?
Hi my name Is Julián from mexico , i have a question i would like to know what Is the model of pedal distortion from malmsteen
Hi. How was the head eq? In the mkii. Pres, Bass, mid, treble, gain 1and 2.
Where is the DOD 250 made, and how much does it cost? How about the Fender one?
Awesome! Great playing!
Has anyone used the new fender pedal with humbuckers??
Hey Aaron, no I haven't... i've got an old '71/'72 Gibson ES-335, maybe i'll try it :-)

250 is darker because there is the first cap .01nf (on 308 and fender is .001nf). With yjm pickup I prefer 250,with hot rails I prefer 308 and fender OD
Hey man, can you make a comparison beteween the new DOD 250 (2013) vs DOD 250 (made in china) vs yngwie fender Overdrive
both of those pedals sound great ... i like the DOD sound a bit better but I cana't tell you why.
You know what your doing bro xD love the Fender OD : Malmsteen's balls xD
Nice demo man
great playing!
thank you :-)
Is the DOD the first reissue?
Amp eq settings please
Neck pickup ?
what do you mean by flappy?
"flabby", the bottom end on the yellow dod kind of sounds uncontrolled and loose to me?
Yes if you play chords on the neck pickup with the level and the drive up all the way on the pedal then it can get flabby but how often those anyone do that?Never i would say its more for solos. And with the yellow DOD you can actually use the bridge pickup for solos which the Fender you get that nasty treble. So thats why Yngwie only uses the neck pickup(95%)for solos these days which is a shame. So get the the old grey one or the new reissue DOD 250(with a led light)its pretty close to the original grey one.
Yngwei is doin his own pedal comparison.
I thought the DOD sounded better in the bridge position, and the fender sounded better in the next position.
Dee Oh Dee DOD.
I like DOD more.Fender is also very nice.
Question for DOD company : was it to expensive to put a damn led light on this DOD pedal ? Really ?
Very good!!!

Pedro Er Negro no lo sabes usar
Strats sound so horrible and tinny. Get a Les Paul, then you wouldn't need a pedal ;). In this comparison, the pedals sound alike to me, the DOD perhaps a bit warmer (better), probably rolls off some of those most piercing highs (Fender players seem to lost some of the ability to hear high pitches unless played at full volume :D). The LED on the Fender is handy for the comparison.Defo. the DOD for me. The yellow DOD sounds more like the original grey spec. DOD, which is even warmer/fuller.
this is for neoclasical players ...
